Think of this guide as eavesdropping on the town gossip of ElderGloom before you officially visit. Though between you and me, I suspect some readers will enjoy Penumbra's sarcastic take on ElderGloom as much as the actual mysteries.
Here you will find: local customs that will save you from minor hexing, dining recommendations with mysterious ingredients, character introductions that come with fair warnings, and yes—Penumbra insisted on including a word search. She claims it's "perfectly harmless," which should probably worry us all.
Daisy Graves writes paranormal cozy mysteries filled with psychic sleuths, magical cats, spooky B&Bs, and fog-drenched small towns. Her stories blend midlife heroines, community secrets, and atmospheric gothic charm—perfect for fans of Beth Dolgner, Annabel Chase, Lily Harper Hart, Kirsten Weiss, and Tricia O'Malley.
Based in Ireland, Daisy creates cozy mysteries with a supernatural twist, where amateur detectives discover magical abilities and solve murder most mystical. Her debut novel, Grave Beginnings, introduces psychic investigator Lenora Blackwell and her familiar, Shadow the guardian cat, in the witchy coastal town of Eldergloom.
Readers who enjoy witchy sleuths, found family, slow-burn paranormal romance, and animal companions will feel right at home.
The author released this book as an ARC before deciding to delay its publication so she can make the book a bit less confusing and so this review is based on that earliest copy.
ElderGloom: An Enchanted Coast Field Guide is meant to be a bit of both a prequel read as well as a supplemental read for readers of the series. As a result those who know the setting and some of the characters will be able to discover trivia from other reads.
Given I am new to ElderGloom and also a stranger I didn't find it too confusing of a read but instead embraced the format as being reflective of real life when you travel somewhere new. Some important names of characters were also mentioned later in the book while matching their abbreviations also unraveled some of the authors of the added notes.
Basically the brief summary of this book is that the official town is trying to make a guide to trap in unwary travelers but a copy of the manuscript got leaked. Various townspeople, mostly Penumbra "Clem" decided to add to the manuscript some travel tips and other suggestions to keep those same visitors safe.
And scattered throughout are added documents from such groups as the Enigma Society and GRIMM to either correct added notes or make note of items that either need to be hidden from normal people and/or studied further for future impact.
Even though I may not have all the full stories, this book definitely has me interested and eager to get to know ElderGloom more.
