The original Adamant series featuring Lorraine, Val et co ended in book four in a definite manner though of course leaving the matter of FBIT and the wormhole for future installments and the author chose to start the second part with Nikola and Bonnie as main characters - while introduced before, Nikola has been mostly seen through the eyes of Lorraine especially in their powerful throne room confrontation, when he backed down from his intention of claiming the throne by right of conquest (though ultimately it was Lorraine and the three Valkyries who beat the Black Regent) and submit to the traditional election which he knew he would lose to his sister...

Now haunted by the losses in the civil war, Nikola is given the most important mission by his sister, namely coordinate the search for the unknown wormhole whose presumed presence in or near Adamant space led to all the bloodshed - at least if what the late regent, Benjamin Adamant, claimed in his posthumous "defeat" message to his vanquishers was indeed the truth and not a justification for his murderous actions. But Nikola is also an infantry officer who led the resistance against his uncle for a year, so the survivors of the elite corps he led clamor for him to command them - to combine the secret mission with his new role, Nikola - with Bonnie of the three Valkyries as flagship - has to go on a tour of the outer systems, ostensibly to show the flag, but in reality to chase any FBIT remnants and coordinate the search.

Tolkien, the closest to the powerful Richelieu Directorate - and whose invasion decades ago led to Benjamin's lifelong secret resentment against his sister and eventually to the coup in which he murdered her and a couple of her children but failed to get Lorraine and Nikola - has recently been suffering a surfeit of pirate attacks nearby, and in thwarting one such, the just arrived Nikola meets an old acquaintance of Bonnie and discovers disturbing news; despite its defeat, the Directorate seems to be behind the surge in piracy and is massively building up a force in the closest system to Adamant space. And so it goes, with lots of cool stuff - despite being a general, Nikola trades on his status as prince - first pentarch - to be in the thick of the action as he is the only one who can fully commit the Adamant kingdom's word for this and that.

While starting slow - getting acquainted with Nikola and his inner demons, learning more about Bonnie etc the novel moves well and when the action starts, it never stops until the perfect tbc point

Lots of cool touches - the D'Artagnan class of Richelieu warships, the battle cruiser Porthos, the West African based cultures and traditions etc

Overall, the author moves smoothly to a new pair of main characters - and lots of interesting secondary ones, some old but mostly new - and the 6th series book is another huge asap as we suspect that much more is at stake than a border squabble

Peace has been restored but there is much to do. Lorraine sits on the Throne with all the responsibilities that go with it as realities set in, but she is strong and has good people to support her.

Nikola has his hands full also, with all the disruptions and loss of life, compliments of his Uncle’s failed attempt to seize control of the Throne. It’s a mess, so much has changed and the military needs a full overhaul.

What Nikola didn’t need, was intelligence suggesting the Directorate was moving a large force of ships, but to where? Was it directed towards his immediate part of the world? The information was sketchy but something needed to be done.
A force is assembled to investigate at first hand and what he discovers is far from good but he is out numbered.

The pace picks up as the plot unfolds, our Author takes us on a ride into a mess that looks impossible. I enjoyed this Fifth episode of House Adamant very much.

a theme in Stewart’s books

To be honest this chapter of the House Adamant tale was my least favorite. Mr Stewart often imagines a very militant future. Some might enjoy the immense military detail the author brings to his books, but it can in my opinion the story drags by spending to much time in throwing out numbers of ; soldiers, ships, battalions, of missiles launched, and persons killed. And while I understand this is fiction, I have trouble just figuring how the economics of how these worlds work. Lorraine‘s brother has by misfortune, been elevated in rank faster than many of the characters believe. Nicolka, is deeply emotionally traumatized yet leads thousands into battle kind of scary, huh?

As thrilling and engrossing as the space battles are in this novel, the internal battle of a certain prince are the heart of this book. The author did an excellent job of unveiling the inner thoughts, doubts and pain of a survivor of a particularly vicious civil war. Nikola has so much to overcome in order to be the prince he wants and needs to be, but he proves that even as troubled as he is, he is still capable of standing for his House and his Nation. Adamant, indeed!

I received an ARC from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

Nikola Adamant is front and centre in this book. The civil war has taken a huge toll on him mentally and it is something he has to deal with when his sister (the king) sends him to a far flung system at the edge of Adamant space and close to the Richelieu systems, to deal with what could be an invasion. As usual, the author gives us great detail with the locations, people and battles.

This is another very good book in the House Adamant series. I received an ARC from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review

More than you need to know

I've read a good number of Glynn Stewart books by now, and this has the usual quite plausible ways that battles will be fought in space some day (unlike, say Star Wars), and interesting likeable characters. But this one seems a bit too self-indulgent, spending way too much time on things that don't advance the plot. After all the sci-fi realism, it seems jarring that at least three sets of people were killed in car crashes. One might think that car safety would dramatically improve after 400 years.

Advances the Adamant story quite well.
We're now following Nikola rather than Lorraine so, naturally, the tone is different.
Nikola is undergoing professional /political changes that effect him.

Reading the previous 4 books isn't completely necessary, but would help new readers to
understand why/how the impact

Looking forward to more!!

A Very Well Written Story

A tad verbose for my tastes. That said it can still romp along and keep your interest. A great story. Well written. I would recommend reading the first books in the Adamant story to get background and context, which would help understanding immensely. I definitely look forward to reading next instalment

excellent

A great addition to the Adamant series. This story was excellent. It added in new characters and new ideas but kept the core of the first 4 books. Loved it, can’t wait for the next one.

New Chapter in House Adamant

Good addition to the space opera that is House Adamant. The civil war is over but threats remain and there may be a new worm hole that could open up a new sector of space.

Good book

Glynn stewart is one of my favorite authors, with weber and Ringo. That's how much I enjoy his books. While weber books have more nuanced characters, glynns are generally more black and white. But good storytelling!

Somewhat iffy on tactics, but best volume yet

Worth the wait, and I admit to being mildly impatient.
This was a good enough backdrop to have a spinoff series.
Probably not on accident....
Enjoy
