Falling for Demons #2

How Not to Charm Your Human Colleague: Falling for Demons, Book 2

Rate this book
They are looking for sunshine. . . in a world without a sun.

When six human women are rescued from the Dreadmoor, Kizros’s only job is to check on their health and provide the rune cuffs that keep them safe. He didn’t imagine that by the afternoon, he’d be escorting one of those humans to his apothecary as his new assistant. But Aofe is the opposite of what he thought humans would be like. She’s a bloom in the dark, a colorful and curious creature, and from the moment he saw her brilliance, Kizros was determined not to scare away his new colleague. Aofe has spent her life being told what she can’t do because of her crutches, but working for Kizros is everything she’s ever wanted. A quiet shop, a job she’s qualified for that doesn’t require being on her feet, and a handsome green demon with glasses to keep her company. Kizros is sweet, charming, and awkward, and though he doesn’t quite understand her disability, he makes the effort to learn. Their pull is undeniable, but their past holds them back. He’s always been too much. She’s always been an inconvenience. Can they learn to trust the sunshine in each other and heal from their pasts together?

For fans of fantasy monster romance, cozier fantasy, and queer stories, join Laura Winter and AK Caggiano in the Falling for Demons series of interconnected standalones, set in the same fantasy world. Follow six humans and their budding romances with the demons they once feared in a cozy, spicy setting.

This book was fine. Aofe (I loved the "here's how you pronounce this name" scene right away) and Riv were just... fine. They were very insta-love, which I did not insta-love. Their story was a little too flat, as in, it was kind of just them doing the same thing for long stretches -- plants, brief pining, too much in their own heads (omg too much in their own heads). It was cozy but a little *too* cozy. Usually cozy books have character development or world building to make up for it, but this pretty much just had smut (which is fine, but it wasn't the right combo here, see below).

I found the sex scenes to be really incongruent with the characters and the rest of the book. I guess that was supposed to be the "sexy nerd" thing for both of them, but it didn't work for me. I felt like I was reading a completely different book during those scenes.

Did Aofe actually need *sunshine*? I thought briefly that she needed heat for her pain, but then they kept talking about sunshine instead of heat. The other humans didn't seem to need sunshine (so it wasn't some fantasy vitamin D deficiency). It distracted me throughout. (The thing with the greenhouse and the necklace was super cute and sweet though.)

There were too many "modern" and non-fantasy things here. Blue hair, piercings, "support animal," accessibility, etc. Not necessarily the concepts, but the words and all of them existing together. This is clearly a fantasy setting -- demons, magic, warriors, indentured servants, etc. -- and it drew me out of the world. I think all those things could have been incorporated successfully, but it needed to be more subtle.

I liked Riv's plant magic. The books suggest that a demon's color is related to their magic type. Riv's whole family are green too, so what is their magic that they use it in politics?

The fruit thing. It could have been cute, but it was trying way too hard. Like, oh yeah, we have this fruit that tastes like so no one eats it because *no one likes the taste of that* (no one???) but we still keep it around to help the other fruit ripen?

(I received an advance copy of this book from the author.)

Soft, low-stakes monster romance where the MMC is a nerdy closet freak? Heck yes!

I knew I’d love Kiz when he told her to swallow the medicine early on 👁️👄👁️ And it just got better from there. Every part of this fairly short book went towards building their relationship. And finally, FINALLY, we get someone who knows how to put a tail to good use 😉

I’m obsessed with these demons who find sneaky ways to claim their human women. The more I learn about their demon culture, the more I want to immerse myself in this world AK and Laura built. I was nice to see the not-so-nice side of demons in this book. They’re more like humans (there’s good ones and bad ones, ableism, classism still exist on this plane) than previously thought. Our FMC’s representation of disability and chronic pain was nicely included and part of what made her all the more strong. Plus we got an animal AND plant friend!

This is the second book in the series and just as good as the first, though in a different way.

It’s actually my first book by Laura, and it certainly won’t be my last. She brings two nerdy, charming characters to life, one of whom lives with a disability. I really appreciated how this was written. The character isn’t defined or defeated by her disability, even though others constantly tell her she’s dreaming too big. Laura portrays her struggles with honesty, both the physical pain and the mental toll, without reducing her to them. The story shows that with the right adjustments, people can accomplish far more than they’re often told they can. It felt realistic, respectful, and beautifully done. Keep in mind, this is my opinion and I do not have any disabilities.

This one leans more into the romance than the first, and it’s absolutely adorable. Two awkward souls bonding over herbs and healing, what’s not to love?

Also… the fruit scene. Iykyk. 🤭

The male lead is incredibly caring, always looking out for her, adjusting to her needs before she even has to ask. He never makes her feel like a burden, even while navigating his own shyness and social awkwardness. He’s definitely the “if he could, he would” kind of guy.

The story wraps up in a satisfying way, while still teasing what’s to come. We meet more of the rescued women and get a hint of their upcoming stories. I can’t wait to see how their journeys unfold in the next books

ARC REVIEW

Kizros said he didn't need an apprentice, or so he thought. He somehow obtain a new apprentice through a sponsorship he wasn't even sure he wanted to partake. Meet Aofe, a blue-haired human who was once captive now in the hands of a demon. But he wasn't just any kind of demon, with his tall, lean frame and a spade-like tail. A pair of glasses sitting on his face. Not to mention of a goofball he is. Kizros and Aofe slowly learn about each other and their struggles.

I absolutely devoured the book. I enjoyed it very much. The MMC is a dork, BUT he's a dork that got such a filthy mouth when he wants it. It was absolutely delicious! He's been added to my book bf list (yes, I have a list. No I don't have any shame) Kizros is an adorable cinnamon roll nerd. Did I mention he has glasses? Sl*ts for glasses anyone? 😄

I personally can't relate to it, but I appreciate how the author has given us representation for people who have CP (chronic pain) in this case, cerebral palsy. They also provide us personal insight of the struggles a person with CP compared to a person who doesn't have CP. We got a bit of angst and securities, but oh boy it help create the characters and the world. Not to mention there was also species superiorism (is that a word)

Now...onto the spice heheheheheheheh. The spice I really liked. I also liked we didn't get a slow burn this time MWAHAHAHAHA. I loved it. I also love me some ahem I lovee it sooo much. Also the tail. THE TAILLL hhehehehehehehehehe

Thank you Laura Winter for allowing me to read the ARC! This review is my honest and true thoughts

This was fine. It's definitely cozy mixed with the current need to have a romantic interest be a demon/fae/supernatural. There is little to no plot beyond the characters falling in love. I would suggest there was even less plot than the first book. I also felt like the characters fell in love too quickly? It felt so implausible how quickly everything occurred but I guess if you are a fan of Hallmark movies, it would not feel rushed. Also, while the sex scenes were nice, the kink felt like it was coming from two different characters than before the scenes started. It almost felt like this was the author's imagined situation rather than something based on experience or lived knkowledge. I get the whole "nerd boy is hiding a darker side behind his daytime bumbling nature" but still...
There are some discrepancies from the first book to the second that I feel is just part of the fact that two authors are each writing separate books in the series rather than cowriting each one. Most of which do not bother me but the fact that Aofe needed sunshine to "survive" but Ember did not seem affected by the lack of sun felt very strange.

Please note I got a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I loved the fact that Laura Winter implemented some more disability rep in this book, and showed that while Aofe has to make adjustments, there is nothing stopping her from experiencing life to its fullest; meanwhile Kizros is doing his best to live a peaceful life and searching for the confidence to stand up to his family. They both need each other, and that led to a sweet and wholesome story!

From the get go, Kizros and Aofe see each other for the soft and caring people they both are, and it was so lovely reading a relationship that slowly and naturally takes shape. This story had a tiny bit more conflict than book 1 (from outside characters, not the main couple) but still kept the cozy/safe feeling of the series going.

We also got to see some more of the other human women in this book too, and all of them are such intriguing characters - I can’t wait to read their stories!

This story was spoke directly to my heart.

It’s about a human woman who’s rescued by demons and brought to their world. She lives with chronic pain and struggles to get around, always feeling like a burden. One of the demons, an awkward and kind alchemist, takes her in and helps her adjust. He’s afraid he’s trapped her, and she’s afraid she’s too much.

But as they spend more time together, they slowly fall for each other. He takes the time to understand her limitations and she learns that she has the right to take up space in the world.

As someone who deals with an autoimmune disease that causes chronic pain and often feels like a burden myself, this story meant a lot. It reminded me of how much love and reassurance can matter. Especially when it comes from someone who truly sees you.

It’s a soft, healing kind of story that hits home and I absolutely loved it.

Cottagecore meets monster-romantsy in the most adorable way possible. I’m in love with Kiz and his slutty little glasses and I adore Aofe who is unapologetically herself. Both are absolute rays of sunshine which is different from your typically fantasy but I’m here for it. This is another Falling for Demons story that follows another one of the six humans who find themselves in the Demon-run city of Heck. This is cozy and cute and spicyyyy. The only thing I want more of is the world building which I’m hoping that will come naturally through the next 4 books in this series. So far, I’m absolutely loving this world and how different the characters (both human and monster lol) are. I can’t wait for the next few books to come out!!

spicy and fun.

I like this series. Following six different women who were rescued from slavers by demons. This one follows Aofie and Kizros the demon. I thought their relationship was fun, getting to know each other asking questions and being open and honest about everything made this very realistic and sweet. Aofie had a disability, but Kirros never made her feel weak or like she was a burden.
Now this one was much spicier than the first one. But I liked that both characters talked about what the liked, didn’t like, and kinks before hand. They also made sure the other was comfortable every step of the way. Which made for so Hot scenes.
I’m excited to see the stories of the other 4 women. This is just a fun sweet story.

4.5 ⭐️

Aofe is the sweetest FMC and the perfect lead for a cozy fantasy. She is unapologetically herself by the end and it was so freaking lovely to watch her journey of self acceptance and letting go of self doubt. And who more perfect to help her than Kiz, this sweet marshmallow who bumps into things because he’s distracted by her and gets flustered by a kiss on the cheek. These two sunshine babies were EVERYTHING.

The apothecary setting was the stuff cottagecore dreams are made of 😍 I wanted to stay forever and the GREENHOUSE!!

It was sweet and spicy and cozy and the perfect little fantasy romance.

I was given this as an arc!

I am a sucker for a man in glasses. Our MMC, Kizros, owns a darling apothecary shop that is giving Little Shop of Horrors in the coziest way. He struggles with his worries of being “too much,” and the lack of confidence from the lack of support his family deals him.

Meanwhile our FMC, Aofe, is stuck in the land of Heck as she also struggles with her own worries of being, “too much,” while simultaneously thinking she’s not enough.

This book, while being very spicy, has moments of genuine emotional intimacy and personal growth that I found interesting.

Things I loved out of context:
Glasses
Tim
Portable Vitamin D in a necklace

All in all, my bespectacled boy can-knot miss

The second book in this interconnected cozy (and spicy) monster romance series. Kiz and Aofe story was a great read. There was some ableism and bigoted beliefs to contend with and in my opinion Aofe’s disability was handled thoughtfully. Just like Ember and Severeth in the first book, this author succeeded in creating very relatable characters. I also liked the fact that the MMCs are a little more mature. Thank you again to the authors for allowing me to read and review this ARC in return for my honest opinion.

Received an ARC from author for honest review.

Seriously Kivros and Aofa have my heart <3

Low stakes and cozy-ish, apothecary vibes, and focused on healing. Disability representation amazing. How the author writes mental health, emotional turmoil, trauma, etc is so well done. Aofa is an amazing lead, not defined by her disability. Kivros is unbelievably caring and willing to do anything for her.

alsooo def appreciated the kink scenes.

(also best characters = Tim and Attie)

Great fantasy romance

Most of the bad things have happened in the past, allowing Charm to be a heartwarming story of a woman realizing she can write her own future. The humor (and there is plenty) is often laugh out loud funny or snortable. The romance is believable, the plants are wonderful, and the story is filled with acceptance and found family. There is graphic sex.

This was super cute. Both Aofe and Kizros were so dang adorable and loveable. The whole thing felt very cozy and cottagecore, and I loved the disability rep!

I do hope we get to see more of Heck and deeper world building in the next books, as this one was very centered around the apothecary.

I like a cozy demon rom com time. Sue me. String me up. Hit me with a ruler or something. If you don’t get it, I don’t have time to explain myself. Unless you sit me down with a cozy blanket and hot chocolates in which case I’ll delve into it until you ask me to please shut up about demon romances. Kiz was this giant green monster with horns and a tail, oh yeah and a KNOT, wearing glasses, liking plants, and being the most endearing little gem you could imagine. Then he has to go and fall in love with the human girl he’s hosting, apprenticing at his shop and finding ways to make her life with a disability easier. I just cannot even. The tail does things obviously. LIKE MOVE OBJECTS! Get your mind out of the gutter. But also fill holes. Spice was five chilis, don’t be a prude 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

Thank you to Laura Winter for the ARC.

Plot 3.5/5
Characters 3.5/5
Ending 3/5
Interest 3.5/5

Overall 3/5

-This was a fun book. It was short and very easy to read, unfortunately it wasn’t really for me. I really enjoy some of Laura Winter’s work but this one didn’t hit. The plot was basically a romance between a demon and a human with a little side plot of a fantasy world hating humans. I liked the apothecary aspect of the book but it fell a bit flat for me.

-The characters were sweet. Kiz was kind of the charming, shy and really sweet guy but in demon form so that was interesting to see. Aofe seemed like she started off being a badass kind of girl but then her softer side took over and mesh itself with Kiz. But, once their relationship turned sexual, I tuned off. I didn’t really like spice in books and this was a little too much, especially when these characters were portrayed as being quite shy and sweet beforehand.

-The ending was a happily ever after with lots of sex. So I was ultimately uninterested in it. Similarly to the other book of this multi author series I read.

I have been an ARC reader for Laura four times now— she’s seen my reactions and knows how much I love the characters she writes. So when she comes here with a green demon who loves plants, rambling random facts, socially awkward, and wears glasses, I couldn’t help but fall in love with him. I was giggling and swooning over him for the whole book. Falling for— as Laura once called me out on ✨the bare minimum✨ but you know what, I don’t care! Lower has risen my standards in romantic partners to unhealthy levels and I love her for it.

Charm is the next book in the Falling for Demons series (go check out my review for book 1) and it is written by the amazing Laura Winter. It follows the story of Aofe, one of the humans brought to demon realm, due to her disability (and because a certain demon took interest in her) she’s sent to work at an apothecary with it’s owner Kizros, a nerdy demon who’s as bright and colorful as his skin. As the two grow to understand each other and feelings start to grow, they learn what it means to have sunshine in a world without a sun.

This is going to be short to keep it as spoiler free as possible. A.K Caggiano and Laura Winter are writing this series together and while there are stylistic changes between the two authors it’s not a setback and that’s because Ashley and Laura have very similar strengths. Both are amazing at writing characters and relationships. While Ashley is a queen at writing tension and banter, Laura excels at writing communication and creating a love based on understanding between two people. that just makes my heart so giddy. And Aofe and Kizros made my heart as warm as sunshine!!!! I loved Aofe and Kizros so much, both were amazing characters each with their own flaws and quirks that made them so real and relatable and together they had me kicking my feet the entire time. All characters between both books are given the most perfect ending too, one that shows the growth these characters have gone through and it’s an ending that wraps up their stories beautifully.

Like Court, Charm is a cozy short romantasy. It is a story of two people finding love and comfort in someone they never imagined themselves loving. It’s a story that will make your heart warm and your feet kicking. A perfect story to relax to and I can’t wait for the rest of the series.

Note: ARC reader

I loved this book more than the first one. Honestly, if I could give this book 6 stars, I would! A lot of that has to do with the MMC, Kizros, whom I fell in love with in chapter 1 as soon as he stumbled through his first meeting with the FMC. Omg, he is the most adorkable, brilliant, caring, nerd ever, and I adore him so much! (I might have a type, and he might just be my type lol)

I also really enjoyed the FMC, Aofe. She's a very sweet, relatable character, and I felt her disability was very well portrayed and served as an important part of her character and what made her who she was, and gave her the strength to be who she became by the end of the book. There was one scene with her that was first shown in book 1 that was repeated from a different side in this book, and Severoth's words to her repeated here meant so much more after understanding Aofe's character that I nearly cried.

There still wasn't much world building here, which disappointed me. Though this book did take more care to show more of the demons, though in contrast to the first book, there was less mention of the human world. The attire and piercings also have me really curious as to what time period setting this world is in, as it's a little vague. I did, however, appreciate seeing a wider array of personalities from some of the demons. In the first book, it was hard to see them as anything but good or indifferent. This book showed more of the ugly side, though it still left me with many questions that I'm really hoping get addressed in the next 4 books.

Overall, though, I really really really loved this book. This was the first of Laura Winter I've ever read, and I'm eager to go read more of her books. I'm also likely going to reread this book again, because I just love the main characters so much.

Aww, I loved this book! This is the second in the Falling for Demons series. How Not to Charm Your Human Colleague was written by Laura Winter. I have to give all the props to this book 👏, it tugged at my heartstrings and made me fall in love with nerds all over again! I had forgotten how much I love me a good, hunky nerd with glasses👓! This book follows Kizros, a nerdy demon who loves plants🌿 and runs an apothecary. Then we have Aofe, one of the human women who was rescued from the first book. She has a disability, which has made her feel like a burden in the past and has struggled with finding her place. The two together are so awkward, but as they become closer, they just fill each others hearts❤️ so well, they fit just like a puzzle. It's so sweet, and so romantic. I thought this book was adorable and loved reading it! If I had to describe these books, it would be cozy, demon romance. With spice! Can't forget the spice🌶, cause it's hot! And yet it fits in with the story and the characters so well. Hats off 🎩to both of these authors, they have written a wonderful start to this series, and I'm so excited to see where it takes us next!! 4.5 out of 5 stars! ⭐
