S.E Alexander is a Canadian indie author who was born in British Columbia and now resides in Ottawa, Ontario. She has a loveable 130 lb. Great Pyrenees/Anatolian pup and 2 cats. She loves writing broken characters but doesnt forget the humor in life because if you're not laughing you're crying. Her favorite genre to write is Reverse Harem Romance, more specifically, Fantasy, Dystopian, Post-apocalyptic, and Sci-fi. S.E Alexander has been writing for fun since she was in high school and has now decided to take her passion to another level by sharing it with all of you. So if you love morally grey men and strong FMCs, then this is the author for you.
Phixmery is like a reverse harem Fourth Wing. If you ever wondered what might have happened if Violet had not only Xaden but also Liam, Riddick, and Dain, then this is definitely the book for you.
The world and character building were well done from the start. The author did an excellent job of really building the world and developing the characters so that I felt like I was pulled into the story and invested in each of the characters. Lots of good tropes, and I am totally in love with the FMCs raven familiar and his obsession with plucking out eyeballs 🤣
While it is obvious this is building to be a reverse harem type story it is also a slow burn. No spice at all in the first book as the FMC and the MMCs are all at odds with each other and only just starting to realize who they are to each other. I enjoyed the strength and vulnerability of the FMC, and there is something to love about all the side characters and the various potential love interests.
I am excited to read the second book. After that cliff hanger of an ending, I can wait to dive into the next book to see what happens next!
This was so good! I just devoured it in one sitting after just trying to figure out what it was about so I could sort it into my tbr. Before I realized it, I was halfway done. I didn't take any notes, so I don't have a ton to say beyond thoroughly enjoying this read and being stoked for the next book. Definitely worth the damage done to my pathetic sleep schedule.
Reverse harem. Dragons. Fae. Magical powers. Lost royalty. Political strife. Scarred MCs. Military training. Traumatic pasts. "Who did this to you?" An eyeball collecting familiar<3 Nero is a very good boy. Found family. Shitty parental figures. Unhinged MLs.
Oh man, this was really good. Thankful for my book bestie to find us this one. I LOVED it.
It started off with a great fantasy buildup, and I hadn't read anything quite like it. The last half sped up and was exciting and full of so much tension and great banter. Loved the bully tropes. Enemies to... slow burn... let's see what happens.
P.S. I love Nero, her raven familiar. Their dynamic is fantastic, and his little quips had me giggling. The eyeball 🤣 🤣
The storytelling was phenomenal, and I loved the world. The characters were unique, and I adored the fmc. I also think having the multiple male POVs worked out perfectly. And.... that ending....
I need more!! Because THAT ending!!
It's kind of a cross between Fourth Wing and Zodiac Academy (thanks to my book bestie for pointing that out) and I'm eager to see where it goes from here.
Everyone should probably add to TBR and get ready to read it on release day, April 11th.
Phixmery was one of my first Arc books that I got. I have read her other series Leukos and she asked if I wanted to read Phixmery. I fell in love.
We got introduced to Ravina and her familiar who’s a raven named Nero. Ravina is a princess whose whole family was killed and she was placed in hiding. She was forced to hide her magic and pretend she doesn’t have any. She’s feisty, a tad bit broken, feral at the best of times, and starts healing thanks to her found family.
She ends getting recruited for a war college. Which is exactly where she shouldn’t be. We meet Talyn, Killian, and Jasper (who’s immediately intrigued Ravina). Jasper stalker and protector side definitely was showing.
This is a slow burn, why choose romance. This book isn’t going to be bright and bubbly. There is a lot of trauma to unpack. A lot of unhealed wounds. Ravina has had a horrible child hood. Ember, Roz, and Mel really help her heal. Their friendship is beautiful and something a lot of people wish they could find.
The writing style is amazing. S.E. Is truly insanely talented. The world building is so well done. The emotional journey this takes you is incredible. If you’re a fan of Fourth Wing, Zodiac Academy, Throne of Glass -but make it why choose, then this is for you. Also. I will warn you. The cliff hanger is GONNA MAKE YOU FERAL. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
I was hooked from cover to cover. The pining kept me awake all hours into the night because I couldn’t take it!
The ending was where it lost points for me. I wish the last 10% was more flushed out. It felt incredibly abrupt and far too hasty.
I also wish we knew more of the mmcs motives. Since they have a few chapters in their POVs I would have loved to know their hidden agenda from their side of the story.
All in all it was a fast and easily enjoyable read. Was it something unique? No, but I still enjoyed it!
Arc read review: read so fast, kept me intrigued the entire time. It’s close to a reverse harem of fourth wing which I love of course. Tension, dialogue and plot were good. Keen for the next 4⭐️
I began Phixmery (pronounced “Picks-merry”) with some hesitation, but the glowing praise from friends encouraged me to dive in—and oh, am I grateful I did. This enchanting debut to the author’s second series hooked me from the first page, leaving me eager to explore her earlier work. It’s a fantasy brimming with magic, fae, dragons, and intricate interpersonal dynamics, standing out in my view for the constant thread of humor in the midst of turmoil and heartache.
Ravina is the lifeblood of this story, a fiercely spirited protagonist whose spunk and resilience leap off the page. Her bond with a raven adds a touch of whimsy, and their relationship sparkles with wit and depth. My favorite character, Nero’s sharp humor had me laughing out loud in public, his zingy one-liners stealing the show. I love that he and I share a love for a good eyeball trope! The cast surrounding them is equally compelling, with a tight-knit group of friends forming amidst shifting alliances and simmering tensions. What sets this apart is how many characters start off unlikeable, with some of them devolving into villains while others grow to overcome their flaws. The recruits’ rivalries crackle with palpable intensity, their anger practically searing through the pages.
The worldbuilding is a triumph, weaving together vivid contrasts: lush woodlands, the stark poverty and anguish reflected in the home we find Ravina in before the academy, and the imposing, austere expanse of Phixmery. Each setting feels immersive, grounding even the darkest moments in a way that invites you in. The academy itself is a brilliant narrative device, serving as the perfect stage to unravel the kingdom’s dynamics, the intricacies of its magical system, and Ravina’s mastery (well, maybe not all the way to mastery) of her latent abilities. The magic unfolds organically, never straining credulity despite its fantastical flair, and the action-packed challenges bookending Ravina’s time at the Academy pulse with adrenaline, balancing deft violence without tipping into gore.
The narrative strikes a delicate balance between the predictable and the surprising. While some plot beats unfold as expected, clever twists—especially a heart-wrenching opener and a maddening cliffhanger—kept me glued to Ravina’s journey. The mysteries woven throughout, from hidden truths about the kingdom to Ravina’s own powers, unravel with satisfying precision. Though marketed as 18+, the romance leans subtle, with minimal “spice” but a promise of more in future installments. The interplay of friendships, rivalries, and Ravina’s bond with Nero kept me more captivated than the romantic threads, though their slow-burn chemistry added a warm undercurrent.
Phixmery is a gem that blends witty banter, immersive worldbuilding, and a cast that grows on you with every page. It’s a story of magic, dragons, and hard-won connections, anchored by a heroine whose journey feels both epic and deeply personal. I’m already counting down to the next book in the series, desperate to see where Ravina’s path leads.
These are words I’ve never even thought before- it feels like this was written by an AI. Or assisted by? It was good, but in the exact same way 1000 other books have been good. I always enjoy a good lost princess story, but the whole “I must keep my secret at all costs” thing gets old. It shouldn’t be 100% of the plot. We know where that part of the plot is going because we’ve read it a million times. All of those times were fun, but still.
The conversations were combinations of the billion other conversations that have ever been written out. There was nothing unique or even very human about the dialog or relationships. Technically they made sense, but they didn’t quite flow. I couldn’t connect. Y’all I can empathize with a cardboard box. It’s an obnoxious aspect of my personality. I used to cry about unchosen Christmas trees. So when I say these characters were too disjointed to connect to, that’s saying something. They passed inanimate and went to uncanny valley maybe.
It’s possible that the author, like me, has just read too many books, and maybe, like me, they’re a bit neurodivergent and don’t quite click with the rest of the world. If that’s the case, it shows in the writing.
The beginning of the book falls into the ‘too much’ trap. Everything was too terrible. Everyone was too awful. It was simplistic in its form and a caricature of a terrible situation.
The secret that the girl is keeping technically makes sense, but if you look at it for half a minute it doesn’t work. First, no one lives by some vague promise they made their mom when they were 6, to the detriment of themselves and the people around them. From her descriptions, obviously she knows who the enemies of her nation are. There is no solid reason to continue hiding inside a stronghold of allies. She very vaguely talks about escaping, in her head, 5000 x per page. It’s odd and annoying.
But again, it does have enough stuff that I like to keep me vaguely interested. I always love dragons. So. There is that.
Also
Suspension of disbelief is my superpower and all that, but even for me, if you force 100% of your population into military service and they all have to go through these trials, and 2/3 of them die every time.. that’s a great way to go extinct on top of losing a war. Come on.
But I might read the next one? Nothing was openly offense.
Review Of Phixmery By S.E Alexander 🗡️ 5/5 ☆ Phixmery is the kind of fantasy that grabs you by the collar and pulls you straight into its world. S.E. Alexander paints a vivid, living realm where magic hums through every detail-from dragons wheeling across the skies to the intimate, almost mischievous presence of Nero, a raven familiar with a questionable obsession for eyeballs. Princess Ravina's fall from power into the life of a hunted null fae is gripping on its own, but it's when she's dragged into a battle academy that the tension truly ignites. The school setting thrums with rivalries, shifting loyalties, and the constant shadow of danger. Alexander's pacing is deliberate yet addictive, building a slow-burn romance, mix of intrigue, found family, and enemies-to-lovers energy. The multiple POVs give depth and nuance, and the artwork gracing each chapter page is simply gorgeous-adding an extra layer of atmosphere that makes this book feel like a treasure. For fans of immersive fantasy, layered characters, and just the right dash of darkness, this is a must-read.

Alright, I was actually a huge fan of this. I started reading this book before bed, made it through 100 pages, fell to sleep, woke back up two hours later, then finished the last 3/4s of the book in the middle of the night. So I guess you could say I enjoyed it because I woke up this morning feeling like an absolute zombie.
I think I had to give four stars because this book was a great first book in a series, but the rest of the books have a lot of potential to do a lot more, and that is exciting. We follow Ravina, our MC who has spent the majority of her life hiding her lineage and magic in a horrible mountain village. She is treated horribly and is called a "null" as she pretends to have no magic. Ravina is picked up by the military who realizes that she is not a null because she has a familiar.
I loved the familiar portion of the book. Her familiar was essentially like Salem in Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Ravina bonded to her raven, Nero, very young. They can speak to each other and he is like a second set of eyes for her. Nero was almost my favorite character. His comments were hilarious and he was so lovely to have around supporting Ravina. I wish I had a little familiar I could talk to, but I am going to basically just count my dog as that even though we cannot speak telepathically.
Ravina goes to this war academy that is very daunting and dangerous. You desert and you die, you don't pass the trials and you die. Ravina is trying to hide her identity and her magic as her Fae lineage was wiped out two decades ago and would be an insane giveaway of who she is. We have three male main characters. Talyn, Killian, and Jesper. They are all the sons of the three different Fae's that are running the kingdom since the slaughter of Ravina's family two decades earlier. We get POVs from them, and watch them try to unravel the mystery that is Ravina. We learn that they were close to Ravina (Real name Maeven) as a child and that they mourned her death, however, it appears Ravina does not remember them and that her memory is not intact.
Each of the male main characters are unique and interesting. One did not majorly stick out over the other, although I think I will be a Talyn girl. I cannot wait for the next book now that they know Princess Maeven is alive. I am falling down a hole of reverse harem books for some reason. Nothing appeals to me more than a group of gorgeous men doting on their woman, when is it my turn.
I also need to add that the found family and friendship for Ravina was great. I loved Ember, Rozen, and the twins. It was fun watching a very untrusting Ravina open herself up to their friendship and trust them enough to share her secret.
The ending and introduction of a completely new character (who is possibly apart of the harem) was really fun. Ravina claims her dragon and is whisked away by Aemon who apparently always knew she was alive. I cannot wait to get more information about him and his role. It is diabolical that the next book won't be out for a month, praying for an arc. If you are on the fence about reading this, I would go for it, it was a great time.
rcvd an advanced reader copy from the author for giving an honest review. one word...WOW!! Hook line and sinker! what a riveting read. we meet 6 year old Maevan ready to embark on an adventure as she flees her ancestral home away from her mother and fathers. her mother tells her to never tell anyone who she really is as it's dangerous, never take off the necklace and listen to Gretchen. her last vision of her home is of Flames. twenty years later she is known as a Ravina, a null in the small village. she has endured beating with iron and he life made a living hell. the only bright spot is her pet raven Nero. after receiving a punishment, a captain of the army sees what they have done to her and takes her to Phixmery academy...oh no!! of course she gets picked on bc her bully from home is there spreading rumors. Ravina finds out Nero is not a pet but a familiar. fae with very strong magic only have familiars. she needs to watch her back. there are the lords sons that she is drawn to...they seem familiar to her but doesn't know how. she has snippets of her past life but they flee just as fast as they come. She is determined to find a way out to somewhere safe. she has secrets that cannot be revealed and when one of the lords sons tries to delve into her mind, he meets a major block that even he can't break. Ravina has a target on her back and she must tread carefully as the academy is not a safe place for someone like her. Drama, trust issues, dragons and hot boys make this a good read...next book...stat!!
Perfect academy fantasy setting with secret identity on top!! If you enjoyed First Wing with the war academy, political intrigue, and a character that takes the time to hone their skills (PLUS RH!!) definitely read this. Also I’m so happy Nero’s dream came true and I will cry if that jar is lost.
My heart is still pounding from that steep cliffhanger! Loved the ending, but I need the next book NOW! Overall, I really enjoyed this book and thought it was a great story. However, there were way too many parallels to The Empyrean series for my liking. I wouldn't have minded if it was just set in a similar environment, but the character parallels between the MC's was just a bit much. The plot is very original though, and was very engaging! Zero spice in this book, though from my understanding the rest of the series shapes up to be a Why Choose. Thank you to S.E. Alexander for the ARC!
Have a book hangover from Onyx Storm? Then this is your next read! But, you may have another hangover after reading this one! I really liked this book and read it in one full day because I couldn’t put it down. The beginning builds it up and has you asking questions, but it is revealed in time. I love the set up and start of this series and I am impatiently waiting for the next book to see what happens! The world building is immersive and creative, the plot is creative and grips you, and the storytelling is beautiful. The author does an amazing job having you connect with the characters and making them relatable and does an amazing job making you dislike the “villains” in this story. I love the growth of the characters throughout and learning who you can trust and who you can't. Nero, the raven familiar was my favorite and the icing on the cake to make the book that much more amazing. I was wondering how the author was going to write in and flip one specific part, and the twist was perfectly done! Ugh, that cliffhanger at the end killed me though! I NEED to know what happens! I can’t wait for the next book!
DNF. RH. This was a big disappointment. Some reviewers said this was like the RH Fourth Wing version and I was here for it. What I actually got was a book that is mostly tell instead of show, dramatics to give the story meaning but are over the top or fall flat and characters who are all victimizing the FMC. That’s literally NOTHING like fourth wing. There’s only snippets of resemblance; words like squad and wing, the lessons with different names but same ideas and even teachers with particular genders. It feels more like someone has tried to copy Fourth Wing into their own story (and cheers to you) but forget to but their actual own spin to the fantasy and now it’s like a B-movie based on an A-movie. I skipped ahead to halfway through to see if the writing style gets any better, but unfortunately, no. So dnf.
This was a good first draft of a book. I am genuinely shocked that so many people rated it high. In the book, there are multiple spelling and grammatical errors. There are also plot holes. However I think that the overall storyline is entertaining and the characters are interesting. I just wish it was a bit more polished- it kinda feels all over the place. Of course the cliffhanger at the end was crazy work and was honestly the best part of the book. I kept finding myself thinking as i read “this is going to get good soon right” and then it would keep dragging on. There are multiple POVs and honestly it doesn’t add a lot of context for the reader. Overall was disappointed and felt it could’ve been executed better.

Oh my god this book!! I loved this book from the beginning to the end. Ravina literally cannot catch a break in life. From one thing to another, she has Nero with her through it all.
Nero is hilarious as well as the other bonded animals we got to see. Nero holds a special place in my heart ❤️
The found family in this book is amazing. We love to see such a supportive group for the FMC. This is a bigger found family than I've seen in other books but they work together so well especially when there are unwanted characters around (AHEM BITCH. Can't say who due to spoilers).
Then the ending??? Talk about a surprise ending in more ways than one!! I cannot wait for the next book to come out!
Lost princess, usual assortment of obviously future mates, threats, mean girls, and too much naivety for a growing MC. I got bored about 2/3 of the way through.
🪽Ravina is a fierce, resilient heroine whose emotional and physical journey reveals her depth, vulnerability, and growth, especially as she slowly opens up to genuine friendships. The MMCs are maddeningly mysterious (and totally swoon-worthy), while Nero—Ravina’s sass-packed raven—is basically the MVP, bringing all the drama and loyalty to a magical world that’s just begging for things to go Kaboom 💥
📙Ravina is the strong, independent, ruthless FMC that we all love. On her journey though she has had to put up with so much and still knows she has lots to learn and she doesn’t shy away from the pain this involves both physically and emotionally. 📙Ravina has this need to keep everyone at arms length but I love how throughout the story she slowly finds some true friends. 📙The MMCs are an enigma for slot of the book and I was desperate to know more about them. 📙The connection that is hinted at with the MMCs was building and building. I am ready for it to detonate. 📙Nero her familiar is the most loyal, feisty and protective raven. He is such a star in this book. 📙The world building that is unveiled had me enthralled.
🍷 “You’re starting to make a bad habit of this and I demand you put a stop to it this second, Rav.” 🍷 “I can’t seem to stay away from you, Little Mouse. If I could spend my days knowing every little thing there is to know about you, your past, I would. And I hate myself for it some days, but I can’t seem to stand when someone hurts you.”
Started this one half-reluctant thanks to the info dump of names, pronunciations, fae types, and political structures — decided to skip the homework and just dive in. Best decision ever. By the prologue I was intrigued, by chapter one I was hooked, and by 3 a.m. I was sleep deprived.
Maeven escapes death at six, hides her royal Gallalaus Fae identity for twenty years — which means pretending to be a Null, someone with no magic, while secretly having all the magic. She’s forced into the Phixmery War College, where she must hide her power, survive brutal training, and deal with suspiciously magnetic atraction to three very different Lord’s sons. This book has no spice. Maybe in book 2. At the very least, this means it’s an actual slow burn. Also: talking raven familiar = peak entertainment.
It’s war, secrets, dragons, and a 26-year-old FMC for a change. The POVs are Maeven, the three sons, and… someone I won’t spoil. The cliffhanger was cliffhanging and I am SO glad book 2 is coming soon.
I need everyone to read this book. Under force if need be. Although by the end of chapter one, no one will need forcing anyway. 🙃 It’s just THAT good.
I have a lot of thoughts on this one! Overall, I had fun reading it. Especially the last few chapters really got me into it.
Now, I noticed a few similarities between this book and Fourth Wing. 🫣 Some I think are honestly just whatever, but others were hard to turn a blind eye to. I think if you have no biases or haven’t read fourth wing - you will enjoy this a lot. And tbh, I really only found the first half super fourth wing inspired, then it kinda deviated for the later part. Take it with a grain of salt!!
If you’re a curious cat, here’s a little list of similarities I picked up on. Again, I think some can just be ignored bc even fourth wing wasn’t the first to invent these concepts in a book, but combined - they stack up a bit! SPOILERS BELOW!!!!
I loved Nero so much 👁️ 🐦⬛ and I also love Ember - the baddest bitch in town 🖤
I will probably be continuing this series, I thought the ending was really good!
Tropes: ✨ Slow Burn ✨ Enemies To Lovers ✨ Military Academy ✨ Hidden Royalty
I beta read and arc read this book and let me tell you, this book is even better reading it the second time!
This book follows Ravina Solace. As a 6 year old girl, she was separated from her parents and was told to never speak about who she really is. She lived with her aunt, and when her aunt passed, she lived on her own with her familiar Nero. And one terrible day, she was picked up by a recruiter for Phixmery, which is the military academy. Now she must try to hide her identity and find a way to escape after the first year is up. But it may be more difficult than she thought as there are three (well technically 4) particular men interested in her plus two girls that decided they are going to bully the crap out of her.
Okay, so there is a ton of world building in this book but don’t sleep on this book because it is still amazing! Yes this book has so very dark themes in it, but Nero brings some of the best comedic relief.
Ravina has had a really though life. And it doesn’t get any better being in this academy. She keeps secrets and she has to play off as being clueless in order to save herself and her familiar. But boy is she a hell of a lot stronger than she puts off. And i honestly can’t wait to she her coming into who she’s supposed to be because it’s going to be glorious.
Hands down my favorite character is Nero. He is freaking hilarious. But other than that, he is so good for Ravina. He’s there to reassure her, to build up her confidence, and to make sure she’s safe.
But that cliffhanger! Omg did it killed me! I need to know what happens next because this cliffhanger leaves you aching! This book reminded me a little of Fourth Wing. So go check it out, especially if you love why choose romances because this book definitely sets it up for the rest of the series being a why choose romance. You’ll thank me later😉
When I saw a review likening it to Fourth Wing (in a good way), I was a little nervous. I prefer not to be constantly reminded of other stories while reading. However, there was nothing to worry about here. While there are some similar elements (war college, dragons, choosing), this felt like a distinctly different story with distinctly different characters and I was completely engrossed in this world!
I love Nero! He was kind of a one trick pony when it came to his threats, but it was endearing and to be expected of a bird. I was delighted when he was finally able to execute on his threats.
I was also a big fan of Jesper! I love when the instability can be channeled for good.
I was, however, a little confused by Bracken and his obsession. I never really understood where it came from or why it manifested the way it did considering his past with Ravina.
Looking forward to book two to learn more about Aemon and, hopefully, see some groveling from Talyn (he was really hard on Ravina).
Fourth Wing meets main plot of Throne of Glass (Dragon War College but with Fae riders). Sometimes it felt too much like FW. There were things I enjoyed about this book and things that I didn’t. A few inconsistencies, tiny plot holes, and spelling errors. I felt like I needed just a little more from this book—a year in the war college passed a little fast, IMO. Made me feel like something was missing. Good ending to book one! And refreshing to FINALLY have a superior in a book that calls out the bullies and tells them to grow the hell up. I will be reading book 2! Overall, good end of the year read! Mostly upset with myself for starting a series that isn’t complete. 🫠
Did I expect this book to end up having me hooked the way it did? No, but I'm so glad it did. I could not put it down. I didn't want to stop reading it to do adult things at all. The FMC, Ravina, has a Raven for a familiar named Nero, and in some moments he steals the show. The found family in this book is incredible and the more I read about Ravina's background, the more I just loved that she had these people to lean on and support her. There's not 1 main MMC in this book....but 3 and we love a why choose moment. Each male character has vastly different personalities but still has touch her and 💀 vibes. I do like that Ravina spends more time trying to find her strength, confidence, and independence without the MMCs and more of her found family. I thoroughly enjoyed Ravina's character. The story itself is constantly revealing information as you read which keeps you hooked in to find out more about what's going on. The ending has a major cliffhanger and I'm glad the 2nd book is coming out soon cause I desperately need to know what happens next!
Detailed. Fun exciting. This is a new to me series I saw recommended in a fb group I’m in. I learned about this book from them and was excited to get to read it. The adventure was interesting. I’m excited to see where Ravi’s journey ends up and who all her mates are and what happened to her family and who was the cause. There several characters that I have a problem with, and I can’t wait to see if they survived the choosing. Overall I enjoyed this and devoured it in basically one go.
