Assuming no previous linguistic knowledge, students are introduced to Chaucer's language in the original. Basic linguistic concepts are explained, and the differences between Chaucer's language and modern English are highlighted. Close analysis and comparison with other writers show how Chaucer used the variety of English to achieve poetic effects.
It is unfortunate that this book is unlikely to be read by anyone not in pursuit of a degree. CHAUCER'S LANGUAGE is a fascinating read, not only for gaining a much deeper insight into Chaucer's writings but the English language as a whole.
