Surrounded by hunger and degradation, the city of Cherai is a sparkling, opulent metropolis, a dazzling centerpiece in humanity's fight against Slithers and acid rain. And at its heart, keeping everything shining and bright, are the Grey-Men, an oppressed workforce, drugged into submission. But not for long. Upon escaping her fate as a Grey-man, Niko is determined to free the whole lot, liberating all from their bondage. Together with Ben, Songhay and the Gemini Gang, they plan to take control of the city. To do that they must control the one thing no one can live without. Water. It only takes four days to die of thirst.
Life is a living hell for those trying to stay one step ahead of the Slithers and their deadly bites. The haves are gaining more, while those without become fodder for these deadly monsters. Meanwhile the Grey-men are drugged into submission and used as the labor that makes all things bright and shiny for the upper class, but at least they have the safety of being within the city walls.
Niko has lived that nightmare and now she is free and determined to free those still trapped in a drug induced slavery. Even more important, is getting control of clean water. Water is the difference between life and death and those on the outside where the acid rain burns and the Slithers attack deserve more than the paltry amounts allotted them.
The Slither slayers have gotten back together and for the world as they know it, the feisty Niko is their rallying point, the one everyone looks to for guidance. As Niko steps up to the place, admittedly terrified and often clueless, she grows into her potential as the powerhouse behind salvation of the masses. Can she uncover the corrupt government that would deny its own children safe harbor? The clock is ticking as those with the ability to slay the slithers are being killed off, one by one. Is it because they are different? Do others fear them? Niko has enough to deal with, but even her heart gets involved when one man breaks down her resistance to love and attachments.
Kayti Nika Raet has another home run hit with Outsider as she continues her dystopian series that just never stops being a powerful read! Characters that come to life, that mature in front of our eyes and danger, always the danger, deceit and constant torment of living in a world that far surpasses any imaginings of what Hell is like. The pacing is perfect, the dialogue is genuine and one can even feel the burn of the acid rain. Ms. Raet can write, bringing letters on a page to life with the strength of her imagination.

If you've been following my book reviews, then you know I'm kind of in love with Kayti Nika Raet's* unique, fast-paced, thrilling series The Outsider Chronicles.
I read NIKO and promptly fell in love with a badass girl and her killer baseball bat. Then I snagged HARM and fell even harder for Songhay. And now I've read OUTSIDER twice.
Oh yeah, you read that right. Twice, bitches, cuz it's just that good.
OUTSIDER is the third cycle in Raet's The Outsider Chronicles and I have to say, it's her best so far. The novel represents a two-fold evolution: Raet's prowess as a writer and her main character Niko's growth as a woman. The rhythm of the novel feels almost languid compared to the first two books and this is a good thing, as it is perfectly pitched to Niko's state of mind: contemplative, distraught, conflicted, determined.
The story opens with Songhay and Niko entering Cherai city as Grey-men, the drugged slaves working within the city walls. Quickly reuniting with Ben, Jared, and their allies, the group plot to free the Grey-Men and wrest control of the city's water supply, thus revolutionizing the lives of many.
And that's about all I'm going to say about the plot.
Actually, I lied. I've got one more thing to say about the plot: there are Slithers. Of course there are Slithers. Freaking nasty pieces of work which, by the way, are becoming smarter by the day. Dudes are talking and strategizing.
Shit's about to get real up in here.
As always, Raet delivers with the action as her crew battle Slithers and race to gain control of the water supply. This is where Raet excels and seems quite at ease as a writer - girlfriend knows her way around a deadly fight. Where she surprises the reader and proves her writing skill are the moments of quiet reflection, tenderness, and despair. Her love triangle is fraught with wonder, surprise, and awe; her lovers are wrapped in a bittersweet, ever-encroaching anguish. Their kisses are full of tightly-wound sexual tension, released sparingly and with such effect the reader can almost feel a brush of lips along a clavicle and a touch along a hip.
It's sexy and sweet and sad.
And then there's Songhay.
About him, all I'm going to say is this: "we don't always get what we want."
Go buy the book. Now. I'm not playing. Snag a copy this minute. You can thank me later.
The third installment in The Outsider Chronicles is probably the best yet. Niko reunites with Ben and Jared inside the walls of Cherai and comes that much closer to learning about her past. In the meantime, though, she must help the Gemini Gang (the group that her little brother joined) overthrow the city and bring fresh water to the people Outside.
It was so interesting to see more of Cherai and its citizens. Among them are a teen brother and sister duo, Alice and Zenith, who are basically the height of society. Niko, as part of her "mission" for the Gemini Gang, has to get in close with them. She also meets Ben's parents *dun dun dun*
The ending of Outsider was action-packed and all I can say is that I'm so excited for the next book in the series!
I got a lot to say about this one, because I LOVED it!
The likes and dislikes: ~The guys; oh, they made me smile! ("Weird girls are sexy." - My fangirl problems began kicking in around here...again.) ~The pieces of history were awesome; very thorough, without making it feel like you need to take notes to keep up. ~Bear with me through this one, but this is why Raet is an effing amazing author! I won't point this out...ever...but this is worth mentioning. As someone who believes sexuality is fluid, reading this is like having a dream world coming to life. Because the way Raet has written it into the books go barely noticed - which is a great thing, because it is totally NORMAL. What amazes and inspires me with Raet's work, is how she already goes and takes on the challenge of writing amazing diversity (which there is a great lack of) and goes and throws sexuality in, so beautifully, that for me it forms a connection with the characters like few other books can. With all that said, scary Slithers and acid rain apart, this world is way cooler than our own. ~Seeing what 'they' say about what Ben did (having read Pale and Crimson) I was so sad and I punched a pillow to relief some stress. ~A few scenes made me feel SO good and I awkwardly smiled at my e-reader WAY TOO MUCH! Loved it! ~Another fangirl problem that causes conspiracy theories to develop...the Slither's 'dead white skin' reminds me of the MRG after drying...? ~Ben's show!!! Eeep! ~CH6...AHHHHHHHH! *happy dances* ~The Slithers thing...(read the books to find out)...OMFG! With that said, I know I shouldn't be caring about them, but I'm getting a Warm Bodies vibe and I loved that movie, so to tie in with Ben's issue...there may be hope...I hope...*silently sobbing* ~I am fascinated by how Raet had made simple things, we know, seem like news to Niko and others, which gives the story this extra element that makes you realise this is not our world, yet still holds the core. The fact about lizards losing their tails for example, it is common knowledge to us, but not to Niko, yet it shows the brilliance of different situations that ties it to our world and that...that is a H-BALLS amazing example of how simplicity can lead to great, relatable writing. ~Alice meeting Songhay...oh gosh! I was all but strangling my pillow, while she was strangling Niko's arm! Boy is charming! ~I'm literally halfway through when I realise Niko has a different name in each book so far and somehow that is so awesome as it shows an odd development and 'personal character search'...or I'm looking way too into it. #fangirlproblem ~The card game scene...so cute and funny! ~The great thing about these books are that you think...'well, that is likely going to happen', but it doesn't. Instead you're thrown into this direction heading so far away from what you thought, it has your spinning in such a good way, you start thinking...'that was a good ending', but then it wasn't the end and you need to hold the F on, because these awesome bastard twists sneak up on you like crazy! ~This got intense! Stressed my A off...I mean exam final stress is bad, but this was torturous and I loved it way too much! ~The people of Cherai (Mrs. King) have a very primitive way of dealing, which is scary, because the Outside is supposed to be a bad place, yet I think it is still safer in some ways. ~Not to sound like an insensitive B, but Songhay can be damn lucky Slithers exist! *awkward chuckle* ~The best thing I noted about Outsider was that is has a little slowdown regarding the death and gore you get with Niko and Harm, but it serves a great purpose. It doesn't slow down anything but the reader. You get this ease, this idea, that maybe this world isn't so bad with the Greenery and all, so that simpler - in this series' case - things like the rain, become a 'so what the Greenery is protected', that when the sh!t does hits the fan, you're whiplashed right back into the simple things of...'Oh, the rain and the Slithers...RUN!'. ~I don't know if I mentioned this in a previous review, bit I loved that these books show how humans will definitely be enemies, regardless of the fact that you'd like to imagine standing together would be a better option. ~'I think it's Malik'...I love him still and those words killed my soul!
Notes on characters: Niko - Why can't she be real?! It is so hard being in love with someone who doesn't exist! Ben - His med kit 'move' and sweetness is too much for my corruptible soul. I'm beyond saving! Can we make Ben real while we are at it to make Niko real? Songhay - Add him as well...Please? Eva - Is sweet and so damn cool. Jared - He is growing up so fast! Roosevelt - Still utterly witty. Alice - She is full of it, but I found her sweet and I love that she 'wants something different'. Mrs. King - *read in a tone that shows loathing* I HATE HER! SO...can we all make a deal to not speak of it and kill her? Like legit, the woman sucks! She needs a 'moerse' SA-style KLAP!
My biggest issue with these books are that they always end (like books sadly do)! *runs away to get the next one*
Well, this is probably my fave so far and the best one in my opinion. Not that I didn't LOVE the first 2, I am absolutely in love with this series, I love the world the author created and the super awesome characters. This part of the story is packed full of action and the fights are so good, it's like you are there getting full of gore and blood, you can even smell it... I know that sounds weird. But the author really takes you there and if you are like me, I am visual, you will love the fights. I could see them in my head. The Slithers seem to be getting smarter which is not a good thing and I am very curious to know what will happen next. Can they kill them all? Gosh I hope so... I am still also hoping for a cure, I still think of Malik... This part of the story is my favorite because I finally got something I was looking forward to, I got some romance and it was GOOD! Not that romance is something I need in my stories, but because I love Niko and all the other characters I was really wanting for them to get there. I don't want to spoil anything and I am not saying who they are either. But we got a good sexy scene, a really good one that made me smile. Although that one is my fave scene in the book the very first fight (it was just a practice kind of fight) where Ben takes on Songhay was a very close favorite. We got some very funny parts in the story and I have to say that even though I thought I didn't like Alice she actually grew on me and now I think of her as that best friend that you didn't like at first but then she becomes your lifeline. I really like her but she better stay away from Songhay... just sayin' All 3 books in the series so far I rated 5 stars and I really believe they deserve more stars, this series is that good! I will recommend you pick this series up and read. There is not a boring part in any of the books and you will fall in love with all the characters.
Just like the first two books, Raet has kept Outsider fast-paced, thrilling and engaging. As Niko enters the city to work as a Gray man along with Songhay, it isn't long before Niko discovers how exactly it is that the cities keep the gray men so docile and unaware, or uncaring of the dangers around them.
Niko quickly finds herself in trouble, again, once her failure to be a conforming and docile gray man is discovered. Ben sweeps in for the rescue and with some help, Niko is now a 'visitor' to the city, and no longer Niko, the wanted slither killer or the gray man.
While Niko, Ben, Jared team up with the Gemini gang to take control of the cities water, Songhay is working on giving the gray men back their minds and free will.
During this book, the character development is a great expansion of the first two books and remains consistent. Ben and Niko's relationship begins to develops into a more serious one all while Niko struggles with her feelings for Songhay. Raet has done an amazing job creating a love triangle that is realistic and powerful. At times, I find myself voting for Ben and more often than not, I would like to see Niko end up with Songhay.
Great job on book three! I immediately picked up book 4 to continue the story.
Book 3 of the Outsider Chronicles is a DOOZY. There's action, there's intrigue, there's romance (with sexy times!), and there's a lot of societal/political maneuvering which I enjoyed quite a lot. This time around, Niko is going under the alias of "Rose", a scholar from Mim. Rather than the usual "kill things and take names", it's more intrigue and stealth. She's escaped her horrible fate as a Grey-man and is now planning a rebellion.
We meet a fascinating pair of twins: Zenith and Alice whom I loved to pieces. We also get at the inner workings of Cherai's upperclass. I felt bad for Niko having to associate with them, poor girl could barely defend herself!
This book also dealt with Ben's past, as well as his family, and it was heartbreaking as all hell. I almost cried. Almost.
Despite the lack of fight scenes I have come to love so much from Kayti, OUTSIDER still had me in a white-knuckle grip from beginning to end: the intrigue, the romance, the revelations that Niko and Ben faced. Not only was this a dark book, but I also think it was Kayti's most emotional one in the series, and until MONSTER is released, it's been the best one so far. 5/5!
This series just keeps getting better and better. The best line was the last line "A storm's coming". I can't get over how in love with characters I am. Niko has changed dramatically since the first book. She is becoming more vulnerable and open. Her brother Jared is beginning to lower his mask as well. We get to learn more about Ben and his family dynamic. We get introduced to a new character Alice who you love to hate. This series is amazing. I have enjoyed every page of it. I can't wait to start the next book. A big thanks to author for developing this great story.
Outsider Book 3, is even better than the first one, which is saying a lot. I've read all four (and I'm eagerly waiting to read the fifth ). And this was one was the best. It was full of #TeamBen. All characters were great. And the pacing was on point.
Woah! Wow! This book is a steady burn to an explosive conclusion.
You rejoin Niko, her brother, Ben, & Songhay (who is back under cover as a grey man). They're goal? To free the grey man, & provide much needed water to the outsiders.
There are a couple new characters that I quite enjoyed, & hope to see more of in the next books.
Niko decides to pursue a relationship.
& of course there are slithers. One fought as a spectacle, many more, in defense of their lives. Ben is inching closer to becoming a monster, which, incidentally, is the name of the next book. (Which will be mine, the next book order I put in)
As always, Ms. Raet's writing is sublime. I look forward to reading the next couple books in this series!
There were a few times when the writing wasn't clear and I had to go back and reread sections to figure out what happened. When a book is as exciting as this one it's hard to read it slowly and carefully. So it's better when the action is clearer.
