The definitive in-depth look at the culminating period in Georgia O'Keeffe's life and work in the American Southwest. Although she began her career as a painter in the East, O’Keeffe considered the West her spiritual home, as well as the greatest source of inspiration. This book features the paintings, both widely published and previously unknown, that linked Georgia O’Keeffe and the Southwest forever in the collective American consciousness. Among the great artists of the 20th-century, Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986) stands out as one of the most compelling. For nearly a century, she created innovative impressionist artwork that challenged perceptions and kept evolving throughout her life. One of the first female painters to achieve worldwide acclaim from critics and the public alike, her still lifes and cityscapes filled her canvases with great energy not seen before in the art world. Her magnificent representations of the beauty of the American landscape showcased in In the West are especially beloved.
I find it hard to review this book as an art critic, if indeed that's what I'm supposed to be doing. Perhaps I'll review it as an "artist" instead. The book drew me in by the presence of O'Keefe's landscapes--mountains and hills and plains. I came here to get in closer touch with this aspect of her work, as it seems in confluence with my own. The southwestern desert becomes a kind of archetype if you look at these paintings long enough.
There is not much to say. It's a really large volume with page-full reproductions in sky blue, burnt sienna, ochre magenta bone white green, everything somehow dry and full of vitality at the same time.
I sit and look at the landscapes, following each rise and gully, and I relate. It makes me feel good about my own life and my own vision. In some small way, Georgia O'Keefe is a sister. If she has ever felt so to you also, see if you can get a copy of this book and sit with it for a while. It's beautiful.
The reproductions were big and beautiful. I could stare at them all day! There was a short piece at the end giving a pretty decent background on O’Keeffe.
Georgia O'Keefe is one of my favorite artists. This book is a great introduction the the paintings of the west. If you have a chance, visit the O'Keefe museum in Santa Fe.
