Three Bisexuals Walk into a Bar

Rate this book
Best friends for over ten years, Joel, Nellie and Flynn are as close as pals can be even though Nellie and Joel are exes, Joel now lives in a different country, and Nellie and Flynn recently made their friendship one with certain benefits. But none of this matters when they get together for one of their much loved meet-ups in their favourite bar. All single and all bisexual, they sit at the bar and get ready to chat the night away, sharing their latest news, updates and dating adventures.

That is until Joel discovers Nellie and Flynn's secret, a beautiful woman starts to flirt with Nellie, and the bar staff roll out a karaoke machine.

Suddenly the evening is totally up in the air, as are their feelings and the risk to their friendship when one of them suggests, "Shall we have a threesome?".

Three Bisexuals Walk Into a Bar is an MMF spicy romance novella with best friends to lovers, sunshine x sunshine x grumpy, a trans MMC with a big heart, a curvy redhead FMC with main character energy (and undiagnosed ADHD), and a stern brunch daddy MMC with a robotic arm who likes to be called baby. This novella is intended for readers aged 18+.

something about a surprise queer release gets me out of a reading slump apparently. I read this in one day and seeing as I haven't read a digital/physical book in weeks, I take that as a win. 3.5 stars

I enjoyed this quite a bit and I'm such a sucker for friends to lovers. this book is about these three best friends who have some messy history, but none of it is toxic. we have Nellie who is a curvy bisexual woman, then there is Joel who is a bisexual trans man, and then we have Flynn who is also bisexual and biracial, half Japanese half British. has a limb difference and uses a robotic hand and arm.

The three of them have been friends for 9 to 11 years. I'm going to be honest with you somewhere. I feel like it says 9 and then later it says 11 and that could just be my own brain. but I'm not going to go double check. they've been friends for a long time. is the point of this and Nellie and Joel dated before Joel transitioned and then Joel ended up moving away to Amsterdam and then recently Nellie and Flynn started a friends with benefits situationship. when Joel comes back to visit they all go out to a bar and tensions are a little high and they end up having a threesome.

this book is mostly about the three of them getting together. there are glimpses into their history and very very brief mentions of each of their jobs. but the main focus of this story which is about 200 pages long is the three of them getting together sexually and figuring out romantically how it work. there is no drama or breakups or anything like that and that is such a relief, especially because there just isn't time for it in such a short book.

I feel like I do wish we had got a little bit more about each of them individually, including their careers or family, or literally anything besides the fact that they're bisexual and into each other. this is one of those books that was a quick fun read but I don't necessarily know how memorable it will be. I did love all of the representation and I really enjoy that this author is dedicated to consistently creating such diverse bisexual representation. I'm sure there will be people who are upset that this leans into a slutty bisexual stereotype but whatever they can be mad. I did like inclusion of the disability rep. but again, nothing is really super fleshed out. Flynn discusses his limb difference a tiny bit and Nellie doesn't talk about her body at all, but the boys talk about her being "curvy" in an admirational way. Joel's transness is discussed probably the most in depth but again, this book is more about the three of them together than it is the three of them individually.

now that I've written a review almost as long as the book, I would recommend this as a quick fun read.

edit for supposed fat/midsize rep: maybe I read it wrong. I did go back and look at the promo from the author and Nellie is described as curvy but in the book her body is described as fat, at least to me. the word fat isn't used but her soft belly, thick thighs, and large butt are described and I guess I interpreted it incorrectly. I just saw character art for this book from the author and Nellie is barely midsize. This is almost certainly an issue for my own brain but I was disappointed in the character art. I really read Nellie as fatter than she is in the art where she basically just has boobs and a butt and the tiny tinest line for a belly.

I'm not adjusting my rating or anything bc again, this is a me problem, but I do yearn for better midsize and fat rep and I think this book baits a little bit when it comes to this. people not looking for fat or midsize rep wouldn't even notice tbh but those of us on the hunt for love stories with bellies and softness might feel a bit let down.

Thank you to the author for the ARC!
Three Bisexuals Walk Into a Bar is a novella about three best friends who are all *gasp* unknowingly in love with each other.
This was a short, easy read, but it was a bit of a struggle to get through the first half. I was very excited for the trio to get together, but it took longer than I would’ve liked. It felt like the pace dragged out at a few points, simply to keep them apart for a little longer.
The different places were described well, especially the karaoke bar. It felt like a familiar place, just like the characters saw it. The characters started off very grating, but over the course of the story, I ended up liking them. Except Flynn… he was a bit too moody for me.
The characters were way too in their heads. I love an introspective character, but none of the characters would talk to each other. And if there’s one trope I despise, it’s an unnecessary lack of communication.

CW (listed in book): sexual content; internalized queerphobia; parent death (off-page)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Three Bisexuals Walk into a Bar is everything I hoped for and more, a fun, spicy, and heart-stealing read that had me smiling, blushing, and cheering for Joel, Nellie, and Flynn from start to finish. Frances M. Thompson has such a gift for creating characters who feel real, messy, and lovable in all their quirks.

I adored the dynamic between these three, long-time friendship tangled up with secrets, laughter, and irresistible chemistry. The banter sparkles, the spice is off the charts 🔥, and yet it’s the tenderness and vulnerability between them that makes this story unforgettable. Add in karaoke chaos, a flirtatious stranger, and a brunch daddy with a robotic arm (yes, really!), and you’ve got a novella that’s as bold as it is heartfelt.

This isn’t just a romance, it’s a celebration of queer love, friendship, and the beautiful complications that come with opening your heart. Frances, you’ve outdone yourself. I can’t wait to see what you write next! 💖

Sweet heaven, that was GOOD. The writing was beautiful, the humor was great, and the characters. Oh my God, these characters and their dynamic!

I enjoyed Nellie, Flynn and Joel all equally as POV characters. Each POV felt individual and easy to tell apart while reading, and each added greatly to the story. Despite this being only about 200 pages, I really feel like I got to know the trio and was rooting for them all throughout the story.

The spice was also great! Healthy kink (including safewords and prior negotiation) and threesome and trans-inclusivity and all.

As a queer, kinky, polyamorous person myself, I just ate this book up. Honestly can't believe this has so few ratings/reviews, y'all are sleeping on some great stuff!

(Bonus points for the adorable baby bi side character having my name + Amsterdam mention — my favorite city!!!)

Highly, highly recommend if you enjoy queer polyamorous romances and like your books equally sweet and spicy ✨️

Gah! I love Frances M. Thompson and this novella just had me in it's grip. Three Friends..all bisexual... all carrying a torch in one form or another for each other. I loved the fact that even though this was a novella we got ample background stories on the characters and how their friendship evolved. I thought i could guess a forehand who would make the suggestion but alas, I was wrong. Boo or yay?

Enjoyed and recommend!

A well written poly love story, with trans man and bisexual woman and man, finding love together. It is diverse and all three MCs are likable. However, it is not my type of romance, I much prefer lesbian romance, and this book has none of it. It reads too much like straight romance and I don't find the sex scenes interesting.

Deciding within a week after you've all confessed your love for each other to all move to Amsterdam from the UK because one of you already lives there is insane behavior. Also, the comments about "rogue Amsterdammers on bikes" are just annoying lol.

It took my three years of publishing "well-behaved" bisexuals to finally give myself permission to have a go at the sl*tty bisexual trope and I can absolutely promise you, this won't be the last time.

I adore these characters and I hope you do too.
