non mi ha trascinato molto... bella l'architettura in un continuo tuffo tra passato e presente del protagonista, ma molto lento senza particolari note memorabili nella narrazione

"A volte ha la sensazione che non potrà mai liberarsi di ciò che è stato". Un uomo il cui passato gli fa da zavorra, sommergendolo di dubbi sul presente e sul futuro. Non ho apprezzato molto questa introspezione, troppo pesante per i miei gusti in alcuni punti. Però è scritto molto bene.

This is not a fast, plot-driven book so if that’s what you’re looking for, don’t even pick it up. It’s a gentle read, quite dark in places and quite, quite slow to the point of meandering. In fact, it goes at John McGahern pace so if you’re not a fan of his writing, then you’re unlikely to like this. But if you’re happy to take your time on the road of a book, turn down a few blind alleys, get lost, then this could be one for you. It’s a memoir told using an unusual technique: the framework story of a man facing the breakdown in his marriage and struggling to find a role for himself in this new, altered world is told in the third person. The flashbacks to his childhood are told in the first and in the present tense. There are some beautiful moments (the elaborate burial ritual of the pinkeen (tiny fish) had me laughing out loud). It is charming, beguiling and, in the end, redemptive, definitely one to savour. It came into my hands in unusual circumstances (explained here, if you’re interested: http://www.berniemcgill.com/2011/09/t...) and I’m glad that it did.

Mi piace l'equilibro nell'architettura di questo romanzo, che si costruisce un passo alla volta, un capitolo dopo l'altro e si chiude là dove era iniziato.
Però accipicchia, maca un po' di energia, un po' di verve .
Tutto scorre come se niente fosse, anche gli eccessi d'ira vanno e vengono troppa... energia. Energia è proprio quello che manca.
