Book 1 in the Renegades series: Kyler and Layne. This is a MC club, single mom, widow, emotional scars, secrets, protective MMC, strong FMC, he falls first and harder, murder mystery element, found family, childhood sweethearts, second chance, biker romance
Kyler and Layne story of coming back to each other was hard fought for and full of such physical pain and emotional heartache. They both went through and survived so much on their journey you could really feel the push-pull tension and longing.
I would definitely recommend reading the trigger warning because of very touchy subjects and situations that are described, but this wild ride is definitely worth it. You not only fall in love with Kyler and Layne but you feel a connection to a whole host of side characters that you become invested in as well. I really loved the tight knit found family aspect of this book. I also really enjoyed that there was such a great balance between plot and their romance. Trying to solve what happened to Laynes late husband as well as dealing with the threat of if Layne and her daughter, Rebel, are in danger. There was a lot going on in this book and I was definitely here for the emotional journey. I would definitely recommend this book

This was the author’s first book that has been translated into English and wow am I glad it was! The emotional response I had to this book was everything, I laughed, cried and everything in between. Layne & Kyler grabbed my attention from the very beginning and wouldn’t let go until the story came to an end, but even then I’ll be thinking about them long after. Their relationship was messy and real and that’s why I think I connected with them, you couldn’t help but wish for them to get their HEA. The chemistry between them was palpable and the spice was great. I really can’t wait for more in this series and I hope we get books for many of the side characters that appeared throughout the book.

Layne grows up losing both here parents, living in a world she is desperate to escape.
And the feeling of being save, wins it from love. But is it the right decision?

Kyler respects Layne her decision, but stays heartbroken behind. When they cross paths again after all those years he knows that he would always help her, no matter what!

And that road is one bumpy ride, with heartbreak, many tears and emotions. But their connection, their love is strong, it always was. I loved all the character's in the book, but also the band they share with each other, they are all family and they always would have their back.

I'm also looking forward to Paxton his story, I know it's gonna be a good one.

As a debut book, this book was really good. I loved Layne and Kyle and the way their journey was portrayed from being childhood sweethearts to forever. The heartbreak, the emotions, the uncertatinity was so relatable.

That being said, I think the mcs needed a bit more polish. Sometimes it felt like they have personality transplant from one scene to another 😅

Overall, the book is a great debut, and I hope Mariel turns it into a series.

This is second-chance romance steeped in history, regret, loyalty, and that heavy, humming tension that comes from two people who never really let go. From the very beginning, Payne and Kyler had me in a chokehold.

Layne’s return to her hometown felt raw and bruised in a way that immediately pulled me in. Widow. Mother. Carrying grief, fear, and the weight of choices she can’t undo. She didn’t just leave Kyler when she walked away years ago, she left a version of herself behind too. Watching her come back with her daughter, trying to rebuild while the past closes in, was quietly devastating.

And Kyler. Vice president of the Folsom Renegades MC, loyal to the bone, dangerous in that controlled, purposeful way. The kind of man who loves once and never forgets how. The way he immediately locks onto Layne’s safety, even when it means going against his father and risking his standing in the club, said everything about who he is. His love isn’t loud, it’s relentless. Protective without being performative. The “I’ll burn the world down if it touches you” kind of devotion.

The suspense threaded through this story worked so well. The investigation into her husband’s murder, the creeping sense that Layne isn’t safe, the way the threat keeps tightening. It all raised the stakes and made Kyler’s choices feel heavy and earned. This wasn’t danger for drama’s sake, it was danger with consequences.

What really got me was the emotional tension. The unspoken history. The what-ifs. The way they circle each other, drawn together by years of love and hurt and unfinished business. Every look, every touch felt loaded. Second-chance romances live or die by whether you believe the connection, and this one absolutely delivers.

This book is gritty, emotional, and deeply romantic. It’s about the things we do for love, the mistakes that shape us, and the people who feel like home no matter how far you run. If you love MC romance with heart, danger, and a couple that feels carved out of history, this one deserves your time.

I’m still thinking about them. 🖤🏍️📖

What are you willing to do for a second chance with your soul mate, the one who left you behind? Would you give your life for theirs?

The things we do is a great book that will take you on an emotional rollercoaster from the very first page, it is wrought with danger, pain, loss and heartbreak but underneath all of that is the soul deep connection and love between Kyler and Laney, a love that despite the distance and years between them continued to burn steady and true.

Despite the fact that Laney moved on with her husband Connor, leaving Kyler and the MC life behind for what she believes will be a normal life, but when trouble comes calling for Connor, and Laney and her 7 year old daughter Rebel are in danger it’s Kyler that comes through to protect them willing to sacrifice everything to keep them safe.

The action will keep you on the edge of your seat, the heartbreak will have you reaching for your tissues, the pure relationship and growing bond and trust between Rebel and Kyler will have you smiling along with them and the love, the chemistry and the fiery hot spice between Kyler and Laney will have you…
…well I’ll let you figure that one out for yourself.

What has Connor been doing to put them all in danger?
Will Laney ever get over her fears of living an MC life and give Kyler a second chance?
Will Kyler be able to trust that Laney wont leave him again?
And when danger comes for Laney will Kyler make it in time to save her?

Find out from January 27th onwards, it’s definitely worth the read, Its the first book from the Renegades MC Series and although it can be read as a standalone and does NOT end in a cliff hanger (thank the lord as I’m not sure I could handle the suspense) its going to be part of a series of interconnected standalones.

As always check your trigger warnings before reading as it does touch on some of the heavier topics that you expect when reading an MC related book.

4 stars for Kyler and Layne
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Things We Do starts off with a bang. After a tragic break-in leaves Layne Hayes a single mother to her 7 year old daughter, Rebel, she is now on her own and is forced to return to her hometown of Folsom where her ex-boyfriend and current VP of the Folsom Renegades, Kyler Young, still lives. Layne tries all she can to avoid Kyler but after she is targeted by the men who murdered her husband, the one who comes to her rescue is none other than her ex, Kyler.

Kyler and Layne dated 10 years ago when they were 17. Layne left because she didn’t want to be involved in the lives of bikers after what happened to her parents. But now that’s she’s been forced to return home, things start to heat up once more between her and Kyler. They grow closer and even her daughter Rebel now likes Kyler. I think the plot of The Things We Do was interesting. There was action, excitement and intimate moments between Layne and Kyler. But this book was also dark. Horrible things happen to Layne when she is kidnapped and it was a little hard for me to read. I got annoyed at Kyler’s brother Pax for being so rude to Layne but once he explained his side, I did understand where he came from.

The reason I took a star off is because there was a lot of structural grammar errors throughout the book which made it a little hard for me to understand what was happening. Some sentences didn’t fully make sense and I think that was maybe an editing problem? Overall, I think the plot was what kept me interested.

Please make sure you read the trigger warnings before reading Layne and Kyler’s story. There are some dark subjects discussed.

Thank you to Mariel Blaze and The Author Agency for giving me an opportunity to read an ARC.

This was a new-to-me author, and even though I signed up for the ARC and read the synopsis, I don’t think I truly understood what I was getting myself into. What I expected was one thing—but what I got was something far more layered, emotional, and impactful.

At its core, this story blends intrigue and suspense with deeply felt emotion. The author doesn’t shy away from exploring grief in all its forms: the loss of a husband, the loss of a parent, and the quiet, aching loss of what could have been. Watching Layne navigate her return home with her daughter—while carrying the weight of trauma and unresolved feelings—was heartbreaking and beautifully written. The emotional processing felt raw and honest, and there were moments where I genuinely had to step away to collect myself because the grief hit that hard.

And then there’s the second-chance romance. Layne and Kyler’s love story isn’t glossy or idealized—it’s messy, emotional, and grounded in years of pain and unfinished business. That’s what made it work so well for me. Their connection felt earned, not rushed, and the author does an incredible job pulling at your heart as both characters confront their past while trying to protect what matters most in the present. The MC element adds tension and stakes without overshadowing the emotional core of the story.

Overall, this was an unexpectedly emotional read that surprised me in the best way. If you enjoy second-chance romance with real emotional weight, suspense, and characters who feel deeply human, this one is absolutely worth picking up.

Layne is trying to make a beautiful, MC free life for her and her daughter. Buy after losing her husband she has no choice but to move back to her hometown. The town she swore she’d never come back to. The town where HE and the Renegades live.
Kyler has kept an eye on Layne for 10 years and kept on loving her every day since she left but he’s not prepared for her to return to town. He doesn’t know how to cope with her so close.
When they run into each other it’s nothing but hurt for them both. But when Layne is in danger Kyler steps in without hesitation. He will do whatever it takes to keep her and her daughter safe.
These two are like star crossed lovers. They’ve wanted different things for so many years but are drawn back to each other over and over. The tension is strong and beautiful. Their connection is true. They’ve stayed in each other’s hearts since day one. Kyler’s bond with Rebel, Layne’s daughter is adorable too. (Don’t even get me started on bs promise to her, it destroyed me) There’s a perfect amount of action to go along with them finding their way back to each other too!

Arc Review
Book:- The Things We Do by Mariel Blaze

4⭐️
Firstly I want to say thank you to The Author Agency and Mariel Blaze for sending me an Arc of this book.

This is the 1st book I have read written by Mariel and it did not disappoint. The book had me hooked from the get go with the opening scene.

The book is set around our MC - Kyler, Vice President of the towns MC and our FMC Layne, who left town 10 years prior to get away from the MC Life but is suddenly thrown back in when her husband is killed. There relationship gives very much second chance/star crossed lovers vibes. Their love story is full of emotion and angst and even though Layne knows deep down she has always belonged with Kyler, she tries to fight it so much due to her hate of the MC lifestyle that she grew up in 😭

I loved how cute and sweet Layne's, daughter Rebel was and how she basically had everyone eating out of the palm of her hand ❤️

Mariel has done an amazing job with this book and it so beautifully well written. You are literally sucked in and you feel like you can feel the emotions of the characters. A fab read and one il be thinking about for a while! 🥰

Can't wait for the next book!

As a new reader of this author, I was a little skeptical of what to expect, but the moment I began to read and really understand the characters and just fell in love with everything. Once I had read the blurb and started to understand what The Things We Do was going to be about, I just knew I had to sign up and see what it was all about, and I’m so glad I did.

The amount of suspense and the emotional chokehold this story had me in had me so engaged and so into it that I had to keep on reading to see just what was going to happen. The overall plot and storyline were great and well-thought-out, and it honestly flowed very well, and I really am happy that I found this book and this fabulous new author that I’ve never quite heard of before.

The MC trope is one of my favorites, and I thoroughly enjoyed how much it was shown and really explained well, along with everything. Kyler is our mmc and the moment he was introudced I fell in love with him because under that rough exterior lies a man who cares so much for Layne and her daughter and is willing to do anything for them! *swoon*

I loved Layne’s character as much as her daughter’s, and if I’m being honest, I didn’t want it to end. I just wanted to continue reading about them because I adored them so much. Overaall I highly recommend this book and honestly, the author, Mariel Blaze, too, since everything was great and I will continue to speak highly and share this book with anyone!

"To my dark romance girlies - the ones who never got over Jax Teller and Opie Winston"
At first, I was wary since the first trigger warning mentioned dark romance...but this did not feel true dark romance. This is the level of dark romance I like, MC dark, not gore or fetish. But I immediately knew I was in good company when Jax and Opie were mentioned.

Overall, the story is well-written with solid main characters and a plethora of side characters full of history. But either I was not in the right mindset or the character development just was not there. The story seemed straightforward but seemed to drag along. Layne and Kyler are childhood sweethearts both raised in the MC with Layne wanting a better life. Now that she has nowhere to turn and no one to listen to her, she turns to Kyler. Meanwhile, everyone is constantly telling Kyler to leave it alone and that Layne's problems aren't his, aren't problems for the club and not their business. Layne never asks for help (I'm not at all sure what she does all day) and Kyler is always telling her he can't tell her what he knows, while trying to solve her problem.

I think their development could have been more fleshed out. I would have wanted to see them grow up together rather than random thoughts or explanations of their history. I wanted to see more of Rebel and Kyler - even though sometimes Rebel seems more like 12 instead of 7. I wanted a stronger reason behind Pax other than the obvious.

A new to me author, and one I will continue to read. I loved Layne and Kyler’s story. A complex story, history between our two characters as youths. Decisions made, regrets, loyalty to the club, and love that simmers under the surface after all these years. I could not stop reading this book, and even after the last chapter I still wanted more.

Layne returns home, a widow and her daughter in tow. Looking over her shoulder for danger she is not sure of lurking. She is in this situation because her now deceased husband made a bad choice. She too has made choices she regrets but cannot be undone.

Kyler, now VP of the Folsom Renegades MC, a position Laynes father used to hold. A man who wants to make sure Layne and her daughter are safe. He is a dangerous man, but only to those who cross him.

This is a story of a second chance, it is raw, emotional, gritty, and a love story. Unspoken words, the what ifs, and a dangerous situation becomes the consequences.

This is already a longer review than I normally write, and I want to say so much more. The characters are still with me, and I am looking forward to more.

Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.

Layne thought she was doing the right thing when she left her high school sweetheart, Kyler, and went for the safer option. She lived a pretty good life marrying her accountant husband, until one day he disappears from her house while Layne and their daughter Rebel are hiding from the intruders. Layne and Rebel move back to her hometown to start fresh. When things start to happen, she knows the only person she can turn to is her ex, Kyler.

Kyler is the vice president of the Folsom Renegades Motorcycle Club. Kyler and Layne have known each other forever because her father was a part of the MC as well. When Layne left, it was because she didn’t want that life anymore. Kyler is determined to keep Layne and Rebel safe, even if that means going against orders from his father, the president of the MC.

Layne has found herself in a bad situation and the people that went after her husband are now after her. Kyler and his MC brothers do everything that they can to protect her, no matter the cost.

I could not put The Things We Do down! I have never read a book by Mariel Blaze, but I plan to read way more now. If you love a MC romance with suspense and lots of secrets, you will love this book!

Thanks girlfriend, for letting me ARC-read your first English novel.
It took me longer than expected to finish the story, partly because I share the e-reader with my husband and it’s not always within reach when I want to read, and partly because the story takes its time – it needs to, by the way – and I didn’t always have the mental capability to hold it all in my head (moms will know).

Ultimately, I loved the story of Kyler and Layne. It’s a well thought out, well executed second chance romance with plenty of action. I love that the characters aren’t all drama, though they do make things worse for themselves/each other from time to time.

There are only one or two points at which I can tell it’s a translation from the original Dutch, but only because I am also a native Dutch speaker writing in English most of the time.

At the end of the book, I now find myself also invested in the stories of several side characters and I can’t wait to read more.

If you like tough but cute bikers and plenty of action with your romance, on par with Kristen Ashley’s biker series, this is definitely the novel for you.

Thank you to The Author Agency and the author, Mariel Blaze for an ARC of this. This was my first book by the author and I’m already ready to read the next one. I absolutely loved this book from the start and as I was reading, it’s just got better and better! There’s a mix of a bit of a second chance romance, and I’m usually iffy about those, but this second chance romance was much needed. It was so beautifully done!! I loved everything about it how the relationship ended and then how they just ended up in each other‘s lives again. I love me some Layne and Kyler!! The story honestly sucks you in from the start and just makes you want to keep reading so you can find out the answers to all your questions. Then you’re meeting all the side characters, which makes you excited for other books in the series. that I think makes me most excited because I love this world and how it was built and getting to know all the other characters. I’m excited to see how those stories progress and then seeing Kyler and Layne make an appearance.

This is the first book by this author in this genre. I love a single parent trope and well as a good MC book. This one leans dark so be sure to read the content warnings.

Layne witnesses the horrible murder of her husband and then decides to pick up her daughter and move back to the town she grew up in. With no parents to support her, she is at least looking for familiarity. Unfortunately in her mind, her past is tied to the MC.

Kyler remembers all the things about Layne and is willing to pick right back up. But she needs to trust again and her trouble may have followed her to their small town.

Great first book in the series. You get a good sense as to how the MC is run. We don't see too many old ladies but Kyler's mom is a sweetie. I like that Kyler is patient with Layne's feelings but not with her safety. I like his good friends and his brother. I am very much looking forward to the next book in the series.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The Things We Do starts off with enough tension and suspense to suck you in and leave you grasping for more. And, BOY, does Mariel Blaze deliver. This second chance, dark romance had me clutching my kindle and not wanting to put it down until I finished the book.

Layne's life is thrown into turmoil right from the start. She's thrust back to her hometown with her little girl to rebuild her life... all while also being tossed back in the path of her soul mate. Kyler doesn't back down and places himself back in Layne's life determined to protect her, care for her, win her back.

This book is overflowing with suspense, tension, drama, action, love, and a little bit of spice. The emotional depth is a story all its own.

Renegades book 1

I was not prepared for how emotional this book would be. I love a good second-chance romance and this one was full of all that yummy tension. I also enjoyed the MC world full of action, suspense, and drama alongside the romance.

I'm a sucker for a man who will go all protector mode and do anything to save the woman he loves and also treats her kid like she's precious. Kyler has a heart of gold.

4 Star Review The Things We Do (Renegades #1) by Mariel Blaze

Mariel Blaze is a new author to me and I am shocked I have not come across more of her books.

Not only do I enjoy MC stories but the addition of a single mum added to my enjoyment.

This is Layne and Kyler’s story and it was so good. This was at times an emotional read. Well written I was invested in the story from the first chapter.

The friendship that blossomed between them was heartwarming.
However, when Layne is in danger all bets are off.

Kyler is s determined to protect her, no matter the cost. I loved their journey as they moved from friends to lovers and was cheering them on to get their happily ever after.

I enjoyed the banter between them and of course the quirky characters that have their opinions.

Their chemistry was wonderful and I enjoyed the push and pull dynamic as their relationship developed.

This second chance romance layered in heartbreak, longing, so much guilt and the tension that is palpable through the pages. Layne and Kyler will entrap your emotions and leave you with the best book hangover.
Layne and her young daughter move back to her hometown after witnessing her husband’s murder. She’s scared and is running on fumes. The fact she’s probably going to see her first love, The one man that she’s ever loved with her soul makes her question if she’s doing the right thing.
Kyler is the VP of the Folsom Renegades MC. He knows Layne is back he can feel her. He wants to protect her at all costs even if it costs him everything he has.
The tension and emotional turmoil between these 2…😮‍💨🫠 just wow!
I absolutely LOVED everything about this book and the heartbreaking journey you grow through reading it! Highly highly recommend this one 🏍️🖤😏

the things we do is not your typical MC Romance, and I loved every bit of it. The story of Kyler and Layne is a second chance romance that starts of filled with action. I love the way Layne as a single mom is a legit tiger mom and does everything to protect her little girl. Enter Kyler, our broody hero, our broken boy, bound the club Layne so desperately tried to escape. I love how the emotional connection between these two unfolded, leaving room for all the complicated emotions that come with a second chance.
There were plot twists I did not see coming and yes, Mariel Blaze made me cry. But I guess that’s a thing she does ;)
If you’re looking for an action packed story, where against all odds our couple gets their HEA, this is a must-read. It was well written, the spice was excellent and very tasteful (truly Mariel has a talent) and it has left me wanting more.

I loved this book and was hooked from the very beginning, I couldn’t put it down. I love a MC romance and this one was no different. This book was full of spice, banter, love and some emotional topics that I would suggest to read the trigger warning first, I loved how Kyler and Layne work on themselves and there relationship and the trauma they both endure, both physical and emotionally. I love the plot line and the romance side of things as well. There is so much going on the book but I also didn’t get lost in it like I have done before reading other books, the author makes it easy to read and understand what is happening. I love the tight knot found family that is formed throughout the books and I love how you form a connection with not only the main characters but the side characters as well. This is definitely a book I recommend reading!

This book hand me in a complete chokehold!! I absolutely loved it. The writing the characters and the story! No spoilers but there a chapter in this book that had me an absolutely sobbing mess! I lovedddd Rebel she’s so adorable and I swear if she’s not 17 and dating Brandon idk what she’s thinking cause that’s the making of young love right there. This book embodied that sometimes what you think is the right decision doesn’t always end with the right outcome. And that fear will always override everything else.

Paxton…your book is gonna hurt me I just know it.

I’m so dedicated to all these side characters. I also hope there’s a second chance for love for a certain character maybe with the person whom just so happens to be living with him.🤷‍♀️😄

The Things We Do is single mum Layne and VP of the Folsom Renegades MC Kyler’s second chance romance. It’s the first book in the Renegades Series and it’s the first book I have read by this author. It didn’t take me long to become invested in this story and I loved watching Kyle’s protect Layne when she returns home with her daughter after her husband’s murder.
This is a well written, entertaining, witty and at times emotional read. I fell hard and fast for Kyle and I adored Layne but what took this book to the next level was watching him do what ever was needed to protect the woman who owns a piece of his heart. Second chances, friends to lovers, mystery and suspense this book kept me on the edge of my seat.

Layne’s story is steeped in irony—she runs from bloodstained hands in search of safety, only to find those same hands becoming her salvation. Her fear is understandable, yet her selfishness and constant negativity make her a challenging heroine to embrace. In contrast, Kyler is impossible not to root for; his willingness to put both his heart and his life on the line had me defending him fiercely and raging on his behalf. As the story darkens and chaos rains down, the pain intensifies and danger threatens to destroy everything. This is a raw, emotionally heavy journey toward a hard-won second chance at love, strengthened by unwavering brotherhood and loyalty.

4 Stars!

Mariel Blaze has a brand new book out, the first time I'm meeting this author, and I'm definitely digging the way this went. The Things We Do is the first in her steamy and suspenseful Renegades series and this isn't one you want to miss y'all. Layne and Kyler are our leading two and whew. Wait until you meet these two. This story was intense, complicated, packed to the brims with all the feels, and a second chance that'll leave you on the edge of your seat in moments. This might have been my first but it won't be my last. Grab up this beauty and find out how/why these two get thrown back together.

I can definitely recommend this book.

This was another new author for me, and overall I enjoyed it. The storyline was solid, though it did drag at times. The writing was good and easy to get through, but I wish there had been more character development.

Layne and Kyler both annoyed me at moments, but they also had some good scenes together. My favorite part was Kyler’s interactions with Layne’s daughter, Rebel—those were really sweet and added heart to the story.

Overall, a solid start to a series, and I’m curious to continue.

Thank you to The Author Agency & Mariel Blaze for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
