Embarking on his writing career at age 15 as news editor of his high school newspaper, Richard Sullivan’s first serious venture into the world of journalism came at age 18 as an undercover reporter in Toronto at the height of the Vietnam War, where he posed as a draft dodger in order to document the plight of the thousands of young Americans who had fled there.
At age 19 he joined up with the Clyde Beaty-Cole Bros. traveling circus for an expose on the social order within that world, then at age 20 hitch-hiked his way around Europe for three months on a budget of only $500, ending up in a Polish hospital suffering from dysentery during the apex of communism. With no money to pay the bill, the hospital staff opened a window, turned their backs, and listed Sullivan officially as “escaped.”
Sullivan completed 55 extensive photojournalism assignments for the Los Angeles Times Sunday Magazine and 13 assignments for Los Angeles Magazine. In 1987 he traveled to Veracruz for the Wall Street Journal at the invitation of the European engineers constructing Mexico's Solo Palma nuclear power plant, which was being built with bastardized and discarded materials. In 1992 he was awarded his first exhibition as an artist at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the following year won the American Airlines Travel Journalism Award for his Hawaii photo-guidebook, Driving & Discovering Oahu. In 1997 he repeated that success with Driving & Discovering Maui & Molokai. Reclaim Your Youth, published in 2009, was the product of twenty-five years in the world of fitness and bodybuilding.
The First Ward Volume I, Sullivan’s first novel, was published in 2011, followed by Volume II, Fingy Conners & The New Century, in 2012 and Volume III, Murderers, Scoundrels and Ragamuffins in 2015.

We bought the "Driving & Discovering" books for Oahu and Maui & Molokai and found them exceptional for their creating excited anticipation on our part before our visit, and for revealing so many unexpected beautiful sites and experiences while in Hawaii. They also make for a beautiful memory album for reliving our experiences now that we're back home.
Excellent photography with the added bonus of each photo being numbered and indicated on a nearby map (usually on the same page) allowed us to preview areas that interested us -- a thoughtful feature. "Greatest Driving Adventure" maps collected at the back of the book are well-designed, large and readable. They provide many unusual options for different flavored tours of the islands. The books’ 8.5 X 11 inch format showcases the photography and allows for readable maps. With internet sites like Yelp.com, and their scores of very recent reviews of hotels, restaurants and attractions, one guidebook's author's opinions from last year are prejudiced and moot as far as we're concerned, and Sullivan offers just a bare few recommendations in passing, compared to many Hawaii guidebooks.
We're unconvinced by other guidebooks like Frommer’s, Oahu/Maui Revealed, etc. with their one-man's-opinion reviews of hotels and restaurants: who pays for the author to stay/eat at all these expensive places? How can one author possibly stay in 20 hotels? Troublingly also, we were told numerous times that the author of the Revealed books is hated all over Hawaii for recommending dangerous places and activities, and for encouraging visitors to trespass on private property, both of which put the visitor at risk. Sullivan in contrast warns visitors away from certain activities and locations. Hawaii is no different than anyplace else: private property is private, and dangerous situations can get you killed. In summation, Driving & Discovering Maui & Molokai represents everything we wanted in a guidebook and omits all the things we find irresponsible and irrelevant.

I received this book as a First Read. It's packed with tons of gorgeous color photos that inspire wanderlust. There are a lot of great maps with distances and driving times. There are helpful lists of hiking trails, waterfalls, hotels, restaurants, etc. There are also a lot of good tips mosquitoes, private property, picnic areas, lifeguards, rest rooms, showers, beach quality, photo ops, views, currents & water conditions, snorkeling spots, surfing spots, etc. It's well organized by region of island. A great reference for anyone considering a trip to Maui or Molokai.
