Derived from Halley’s Bible Handbook , a world-renowned, accessible guide to the Bible now in its 25 th edition, this digital short sketches the history of the time between the Old and New Testaments. The rise of the Greek and then Roman Empires, the Maccabees, Herod’s Temple, the Sanhedrin—this introduction to a fascinating era not covered in the Bible includes all of the above and more. Useful for Bible students wanting to better understand the cultural context of the New Testament and for readers interested in Middle Eastern and early European history, The Time Between the Old and New Testaments shines light on a key period in world and religious history.
Dr. Henry H. Halley was a well-respected author, minister, and Bible lecturer, dedicating his life to spreading his passion for Bible study and memorization. The original "Halley's Bible Handbook" grew from small pamphlets about the Bible that he gave away to encourage churches and individuals in Bible study.
This is a great introduction to the history of the inter-testamental period! Like the subtitle implies, it is definitely short (I think it took me about an hour to read through it all), so don't expect a great amount of detail or history. But as an introductory overview, it excels. I've always been a little hazy on what happened between Malachi and Matthew - this not only filled in those gaps but also connected the current global events of that time with various biblical accounts. Highly recommend if you're at all interested in what happened during those 400 years!
This book is a concise overview of the intertestamental period. It is an excellent summary to bridge the gap between the end of the Old Testament and the beginning of the New Testament. Many things changed during those four centuries and understanding that helps understand the setting of the Gospels and the land of Israel during the life of Jesus.
When reading the Scriptures, understanding the context is key to proper interpretation. This little book is critical to seeing the context of the New Testament so that you can understand the setting and times in which Jesus the Christ and His students were born into. I recommend it for all serious students of the Bible.
For how short this book is, it has a good deal of information. It only covers the highlights and gives brief descriptions of people and events. Not a good book for study but a great book to get familiar with the time between the Old and New Testaments.
The book is very concise of history. It successfully explains and connects the history between The Maccabees and Jesus's time. Good read and introduction for the New Testament.
