Havenstone Novella

Her Grumpy Cowboy

Rate this book
Some ghosts can only be silenced by love—and maybe a little Christmas magic.

Grady

I wasn’t supposed to come back to Havenstone.
Not after the Navy. Not after the battles I fought—overseas and in my own damn head.

But the Maas family gave me a second chance once, and this Christmas, I owe it to them to show my face at their bonfire. One night, I tell myself. In and out.

Then I meet her. Angel.
Too bright, too beautiful, too good for a man who’s been living in the dark for years.

She thinks I’m worth saving. I think she’s the kind of miracle I don’t deserve.
But the more time I spend with her under these Montana skies, the harder it is to remember all the reasons I swore I’d never stay.

This town, this ranch, this woman—they feel like home.
And for the first time in a long time, I’m starting to wonder if I’m ready to stop running… and fight for forever.

Saddle up for Naughty List Ranch!

Four cowboys. One Christmas tree ranch. And the women they never saw coming.

Years ago, they were troubled teens sent to the snowy wilds of Havenstone, Montana. But at the Maas Family Ranch, they found more than chores and second chances—they found brotherhood.

Now they're all grown up—rugged, irresistible, and about to be blindsided by love. From surprise reunions to small-town sparks, these men are about to meet the women who'll steal their hearts… and heat up their holidays.

These cowboys found family at the ranch. Now they’ll find forever under the mistletoe.
Four standalone romances. One unforgettable bond. All the holiday magic you could want, wrapped in flannel and sinfully hot kisses.

He came home for one night. She made him want to stay forever.

Grady Cross isn't looking for connection when he returns to Havenstone. After years in the Navy and more scars than he’ll admit, one night at the ranch that once gave him a second chance should’ve been enough. Then he meets Angel Tilsen, and everything he thought he left behind starts to feel like something he might want again.

Angel’s not planning on falling for anyone. She’s built a quiet life running a Christmas-themed coffee shop, keeping people at arm’s length, and staying in control. Grady throws all that off with one intense glance and a quiet offer to help. He’s guarded, stubborn, and steady in all the ways she never let herself want.

Their connection builds slow and steady, shaped by shared silences, quiet moments, and unexpected tenderness. When a snowstorm hits, the walls between them finally come down, and what begins in warmth turns into something deeper and far more real. He makes her feel safe. She makes him want to stay.

But healing isn’t simple. The closer Christmas gets, the more old habits and hard choices threaten what they’re building. He came back to leave. She planned to walk away. Now neither of them is sure they can. Because sometimes home isn’t where you started. It’s where you choose to stop running.

Grady shifts from a loner carrying quiet grief to a man who reaches for connection. Angel learns to stay rooted, to trust, and to let herself be loved without fear. Together, they find peace not in perfection, but in presence, in being seen, and in the kind of love that feels like home.

A steamy, grumpy sunshine, wounded veteran, small town, Christmastime, cowboy romance exploring healing, found family, vulnerability, growth, the choice to stay, and love as redemption. It’s about choosing to stay when running feels easier, learning to trust again, and finding peace in the arms of someone who sees and loves the real you.

The Elevator Pitch: A grumpy cowboy with a guarded heart comes home for Christmas and meets the one woman who makes him want to stay. Their connection starts slowly and deepens into something fierce, tender, and life-changing under the snowy lights of a small Montana town. It’s a steamy, emotional romance about healing old wounds, choosing love, and finding home in the last place expected.

5++ stars!!

This is part of a multi author series called Naughty List Ranch, a place in the wilds of Montana where four troubled teen boys were taken in and guided to adulthood by a loving couple. Now, as grown men, the bonds of brotherhood and family they built when they were teens are still there and they’ve just called Grady, a former SEAL back home for a visit.

Angel, the new inheritor of Mistletoe and Mugs, was no stranger to being alone… raised in the foster system, she was always on the move, never staying in one place for long, always moving on before she herself was left. The initial plan was to get M&M settled then sell it and move on but falling, literally, for the grumpy cowboy has her rethinking that plan.

I LOVED this book!!! It clicked SO many boxes for me I can’t even begin to describe them all. Hot, s3xy, adoring, cowboy ☑️, tons of steamy times ☑️, curvy woman worshipped BECAUSE of said curves instead of them merely being tolerated ☑️, a cowboy so good at dirty talking you’d think it was his job and he was bucking for a raise ☑️ and most of all, the amazing way the authors described the feelings Angel and Grady had for each other and the way they communicated it ☑️☑️☑️. Even right this minute, a couple of hours after finishing the book, I still get this melty feeling when I think about how Grady described to Angel how she looked to him when she got all self conscious about how she looked… I think out of all the books I’ve ever read, that was the sweetest, most touching thing an MMC has ever said to his woman.

I’m here to tell you right now, I want my OWN grumpy cowboy!!! You have got to check this out, it’s perfection in written form. 5++ stars

"I want you... I want to be yours. I want you to be mine. I want forever, and I don't scare easily."~Grady😍

"We hover, suspended between almost and everything." ~Angel😍

"Feels like a lot of things are where they're supposed to be this year."~Mary😉

What a fantastic read! I was hooked and could hardly tear away from the story unfolding before me.🥳🥳 The Havenstone world is expanding with the men of Naughty List Ranch. Grady Cross is a man who carries a great deal of burdens, self doubts, and a restlessness that he has no idea what to with. There's layers to the man. But he holds his cards close to his vest, not sure if he can trust anyone with his need to be still and not run anymore. He came back to where he grew up, with Mary and Christopher who are his true parents, and didn't give up on him when the rest of the world did. Grady had a rough beginning. I couldn't help but feel the deep emotions and sadness that made Grady who he is. He was grumpy but really, he was looking for home. To be open and share his wants and needs. To rest and be okay with it. I like Grady. He has such a good heart that has been wounded. Then he met an angel. A falling one he had to catch from a ladder.🙆🏻🪜⭐ Instant fireworks! 🎆🎆🎆🎆

Angel Tilson runs the Mistletoe Mug in Silver Bell Hollow. She inherited it from an unknown aunt. She knows Mary and Christopher and was trying to help hang a big Christmas star at their ranch... and one slip landed her in the arms of an attractive quiet cowboy.🤠 She had already run into him earlier. Grady took her breath away. He didn't say a whole lot but she could look at him forever.😍 It was instant, this warm buzzing feeling. I like Angel. She's a girl's girl. She's sweet and thoughtful. Angel has insecurities about her curves, about finding her place in the world. So far, this small ranch community has held her for a year. A miracle. She also bears a sad past, much like Grady. But she felt something with him. Something unknown, but that girl wanted to find out more with him. Not to worry Grady felt that deep connection for his shortcake. His Angel.🥰🥰

Like I wrote, this is a very good book. It has romance but with spicy heat and some naughty talk.🥵🌶️🌋🥵🌶️🌋 The pages flew by with no hiccups. The storytelling was rich and had me rooting for Grady and Angel. It was time to take a chance and stay. Plus, we get to 'see' some characters from the Havenstone series and meet new ones who are funny and charming for this one. Like Mary. Callie. Jamie. This can be read as a standalone. Plus, it's Christmas. Extra festive.🎄🎄🎄 Cozy up with a blanket vibe. I do recommend. If you like a feel good cowboy and his lady love story, check this one out. Love the book cover. Shout-out to Rudy for his brief cameo.🐶 Happy reading.❄️🩵❄️🩵☃️

Extra quote that cracked me up.

"You're the one trying to park a yacht in a canoe."~Angel😂😝😝

Grady Cross never planned to come back to Havenstone. The decorated Navy veteran has seen too much, lost too much, and carries those ghosts like a second skin. The Maas family once gave him a second chance, but now he’s only returning for one night—to pay his respects and disappear again. Simple. Clean. Controlled.

Then he meets Angel Tilsen.

Angel’s name suits her. She’s sunshine wrapped in quiet strength—a woman who’s built her own life from the ashes of a hard past. She’s not looking for love, especially not from a brooding cowboy who wears his solitude like armor. But the moment their paths cross, something in both of them shifts. What begins as wary curiosity turns into long conversations, unexpected laughter, and a connection neither of them saw coming.

Violet Rae captures the ache of loneliness and the beauty of second chances with remarkable grace. Grady’s pain feels real—the kind of heaviness you can’t just fix with words—and Angel’s compassion doesn’t feel naïve; it feels earned. Their romance builds quietly, layer by layer, until one snowstorm melts the distance between them. And when it does? It’s electric.

But what makes this story linger isn’t the spice (though there’s plenty of that, too). It’s the emotional honesty. Her Grumpy Cowboy reminds us that healing doesn’t come from running—it comes from choosing to stay. From letting yourself be seen. From realizing that sometimes the hardest battles aren’t fought overseas, but in your own heart.

If you love grumpy/sunshine pairings, wounded veterans, small-town warmth, and holiday stories that leave you believing in redemption and real love, this book is a must-read.

Because sometimes, “home” isn’t where you’re from—it’s who you find under the falling snow.

Angel is in Silver Bell Hollow at her coffee shop, Mistletoe Mug, and Christmas is coming fast. She also sells peppermint bark (I adore peppermint bark, which is one of the few white chocolate I eat.). I love how she gets along with her customers and Jamie, the young barista-in-training. She needs to deliver the refurbished star topper out The Naughty List Ranch, to Mary & Christopher Maas. Mary had also asked Angel to help work her magic on the decorations at the ranch as well. Plus, she would get to see her friend Callie, who was the ranch’s baker. She meets Grady Cross, who is one of the guys who the Maas’ had taken in to foster when he was a kid. Grady is now out of the Navy and Mary is happy to see him, back home. Seeing all of the guys, the Maas’ and how they work together, is just so heartwarming and I found myself tearing up a few times with just how beautiful it all was. The book is fun, funny, sweet, romantic, steamy, and just so loving. The town is just a community that cares about each other and helps those that need it. When Angel tries to put the topper on the tree, the ladder isn’t steady and it is a good thing that Grady is close by. With that fall, they fall for each other. It was just too cute. We get to see a few people from other series there like the Sutton. I loved how Grady cared for Angel until they realized what was going on with their hearts. I love the mentions in the book as well. It mentions one of my fave musicals that I loved to watch growing up with my mom, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

I love how each of the guys find their ‘one’ and learning about their pasts which had me tearing up. I love the choices that were made that takes into account not only themselves but those around them and how to spread what they got to others. That it doesn’t stop with Grady’s generation. I can’t wait to read the other books in the series.

If you are wanting a short, sweet, heart-warming Christmas read, then this is the book for you. Grady and Angel had similar experiences growing up, however, Grady was lucky to be given a second chance at 12 years old with Mary and Christopher Maas. He was given love and guidance with his found family. Angel unfortunately spent her childhood in the foster system. Grady finally has come home for Christmas after years away in the military. Angel is now the owner of a business left to her by an aunt she never knew about. A bodily collision leads to this protective cowboy finding his unexpected Christmas Angel. This will be a holiday season to remember.

Many thanks to the author for sending me this advance copy. I am leaving an honest voluntary review.

This is a short, spicy , and hearfelt story of two damaged/hurt souls who find each other right on time for Christmas.

Both Grady and Angel have been victims of abandonment. Luckily for Bradfy, he found family in the ranch, and for Angel she found a new start in an surprise inheritance, but they have been lonely and wandering trying to find themselves. He is back to celebrate the season, and a chance encounter places brings them together.

Their attraction is instant, but is their conversations, their insights that opens their hearts to leaning on each other and learning to stop running. Their love is sweet, their passion explosive, and their insights will make you smile.

This book is a part of the Naughty List Ranch series and focuses on Grady and Angel. Grady and Angel both started their lives without family. Grady got lucky when he met Mary and Christopher and they gave him a second chance at family. He was able to experience love, security, and acceptance with his new family. He left to pursue the military and after years away he comes back to where he grew up. When he gets there, he meets Angel and his whole world changes. I love the connection between Grady and Angel and how together they were able to help heal parts of themselves that had been broken growing up. This was a great story and a great addition to the story.

This novella is dual POV, well written and edited, and a sweet and steamy, small town, contemporary Christmas romance that is actually fast paced but reads as slow and sweetly meandering. I enjoyed both Angel and Grady, the lead characters, felt like they were settling into “home” in the small town. I appreciated the way they could empathise with each other’s histories. I enjoyed Angel’s cheerful kindness and Grady’s more stoic compassion. I enjoyed the steamy intimate moments and the happy ending. I enjoyed the community they they were part of.

Grady and Angel, both had horrible childhoods and were abandoned. Grady was lucky and found his family at 12, Angel had to survive the foster system. They are both lonely, fearful, and running. Grady has come home after being in the navy for many years. Angel is now the owner of a Christmas shop left to her by an aunt she didn't know. They bump (literally) into each other. He asks her quietly for help and she finds safety in accepting it from him. The connection that they feel is instant and undeniable but will they be able to lean on each other, heal and find their happily ever after? I would like to thank the author for the gift of this copy.

“Her Grumpy Cowboy” by Violet Rae & Fern Fraser

-A short, warm, and emotional Christmas romance. I received a free copy and am voluntarily sharing my honest thoughts.

Grady, a wounded veteran returns home for one night and finds a reason to stay when he meets Angel, a fiercely independent woman with her own scars. Their slow-burn connection grows through quiet moments, shared hurt, and a spark neither expected. A snowstorm brings them closer, turning guarded hearts into something tender, steamy, and real.

The story focuses on healing, choosing to stay, and finding home. The supportive community featured is a great place to heal. Good read.

Her Grumpy Cowboy is a small-town, holiday, cowboy must read! I loved it. The story was well-written. The characters were developed in a way that drew this reader into their journey. Grady and Angel make a perfect match. Each have had difficult childhoods that have caused them to more guarded in life and love. They travel a path to becoming friends and then deepen their relationship. The supporting characters were just as enjoyable and added much to the story. This slow burn novella really was engaging throughout with friendship, found family, heart, emotion, humor, and some spicy romance. Her Grumpy Cowboy (A Havenstone Novella) is Book 1 of the Naughty List Ranch series.

Grady grew up in the foster care system and was lucky to meet the Maas family, who gave him a chance in life. Now he is back at the family ranch, after years in the military, and meets Angel. Angel inherited the local café from an aunt she didn't know. She planned to fix it up and sell it, but ended up falling for the small town and Grady. This is a small town, second chance romance, with well developed characters, a heartwarming storyline, and a great ending. Her Grumpy Cowboy is book one and a wonderful start to the multi-author Naughty List Ranch series. I look forward to reading the rest of the books in the series. I liked the characters in this, they were likeable, relatable and developed, I believed in their connection and chemistry and really liked seeing things develop between them. They understood each other so well, support one another and accepted each other for who they were. I also liked the support they both received, the well meaning sticking their noses in, seeing them embrace their feelings and get their HEA.

Grady and Angel

I love this story. I’ve never read this author before, but it was very sweet and romantic. These were two people who were used to moving around and never belonging anywhere. Grady drifted after the military and angel having been a foster kid never knew a real home these two end up in the same place and find they are drawn to each other in the best possible way. I love how the story unfolded. How these two just fit perfectly together. I’ll look forward to more stories from this author.

Easy Read Christmas Romance

Grady has been away from the family that raised him from a long time, seen a lot in the navy and isn’t sure he is deserving of love. When he bumps into Angel, the local coffee shop owner, he starts to rethink his views.

This is a low angst, enjoyable read with some good spicy scenes once the main characters realize they belong together. If you are looking for a good Christmas romance, this is your book.

Angel and Brody, their story is oh so very good. Two strong people who often feel they don’t belong. He’s a dirty talking protector, she is a strong cafe shop proprietor. They don’t play games, they see each other and go with their feelings, stick together, talk, have a laugh, support each other and burn up the sheets.
A well written story that certainly kept me reading
Great supporting characters too, that all feel Iike family
