When has the Ivy House crew ever stayed in line?

Meanwhile, the mages face their own rising threat. Momar isn't like the Mages Guild--he's sharper, more ruthless, and far too close to uncovering their whereabouts.

Where’s the rest?

This was the first book from this author that I haven’t wholeheartedly adored. It felt oddly rushed and unfinished - and definitely unsatisfying, I’m sorry to say. The character depth and development of the previous books is lacking, and that ending? Abrupt to the point of ridiculous. While I truly appreciate the short time between books… we really will wait longer for quality.

This book is like coming home.

There is a reason the Magical Midlife books are called the Leveling Up series. Because they are most def on an entirely different level. 🔥 I mean, total fire is a level right!?

These characters aren't just characters, they are truly, found family. They're different, they're weird, they're strong, and they're fun! The FMC is a badass and she stands proud with an equally badass crew!

It's such a thrill to read this story and go from all the feels, to laughing out loud, and randomly fist pumping the air and yelling YES!

I'd pull all the stars from the sky and give it every one if I could. But 5-Stars will have to do. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This series is a firm favorite, re-read repeatedly, and I was so happy to have a new book pop up in my feed.

While there are still big things happening in the overall story, this book feels more like a slice of life story. What I mean by that is that we get to revisit our favorite characters, see them continue to gel and grow. Work out some hiccups in their organization. Work to convince more to join them for the inevitable fight with Momar.

I enjoyed the hell out of it, and was really happy to see the Sabby/Nessa side quest put to bed.

I can't wait for the next one!

Immediate series re-read Oct 2025
I liked it better this second time through, probably because the series re-read freshened up the details - I didn't entirely remember the gargoyle people from the earlier book when they tried to form an alliance.

Poor Jess and Austin are being pulled in a million different directions in this one. But I think they need to shake off the idea of Jess and her crew conforming. Austin mostly has, but trying to get her to be the totally blank-faced shifter leader was a silly subplot. It isn't who she is. And the group she has works because of who she is, because of her obvious emotion and caring. Who she is is a strength, not a thing to be hidden. And maybe more to the point, the value of the Austin and Jessie's pack is as a shelter for ones who either don't fit into the system or who have been treated badly by it. Expecting them all - of different species - to now contort themselves into shifter ideals is not just silly, it is unfair. And I think Austin knows that, but his nerves were so tied in knots at the beginning of this book that he was reaching to the structure he'd always been taught as a kind of comfort blanket. But the entire point of the convocation is that magical society has to change. That what they've been doing for centuries doesn't work anymore, it has created a system that Momar now dominates. We know they've been wiping out shifter packs for years - for example, Brochan's pack - and have gone completely unchecked. These big, uber alphas who think so highly of themselves and their traditions haven't bothered to lift a finger to help, because they think it can't happen to them. I cannot imagine being so blasé about what is clearly a genocide, just because it hasn't directly affected you personally. What dipshits. I mean, can't they see the writing on the wall? They're looking at their own extinction, but it is more important to them to posture and poo-poo ideas to combat it.

One thing, though. Austin and Kingsley talked in this book about Austin taking down some big shifter alpha who thinks he's king of the world - Armendale, or something like that, was his name. This is the guy who shut down Kingsley's plan to work together back when Momar first started wiping out packs a few years ago. He's a spoiled, inherited alpha who has never had to fight for anything, and he wants to maintain the status quo. Right now, Austin and Kingsley are thinking to make an example of him, fighting him into submission. But I hope they don't get to it, because...

... I want Momar to hit him first. I thnk the shifters need a wake up call. Seeing the guy they look to as the strongest and most secure pack leader get splattered like road kill might make them realize the depth of the shit they are in. Strategically, I could see Momar doing it because he wants to take a powerful piece off the board before Austin has time to bring him into the fold. And I hope it happens. The big alphas haven't even batted an eye at smaller packs being wiped out. Maybe they need to see a big pack get wiped out. I know that Austin would take it hard - he wants to save everyone, after all - but I think that it would make an important point, while elevating Momar as someone to be feared. Because even though the fight at Kingsley's territory wasn't a cake-walk, and we lost some important people, so far Momar really does seem quite beatable, given that he's lost every encounter Jess and Austin has had with him. He makes me nervous because I think they'll probably lose more people, but I am not at all worried about the final outcome.

Last thing to ponder. We have 3 open seats on the Ivy House council. I wonder who will get them? I'm thinking that Tristan should take the slot that Nathanial vacated, both because he's taken on that role and because it would cement how valued he is, something he desperately needs. I'd like to see Sebastian take a seat, too, so that it cements that they are now entirely on the team. And while I like Nessa and she's certainly part of the core team, I'm not sure that she should get the last seat - plenty of core members of the team don't have a seat (see: Brochan, Indigo, Mimi (though she doesn't fight with them), Aurora (who is fighting with them more and more)) and there aren't enough seats for all of them. You know what would be fun? Fred taking the last seat. She's not magical, but I like the idea of the broad species representation - it's like a mini convocation. And I like the inclusion of that total weirdo who has now so clearly found her peeps. That said, she doesn't battle with them either, and I think this is really a battle posting. So the last seat will likely be either Nessa, Aurora, Indigo, or Brochen Sue. I'd say Sue is least likely, because I think that Austin will likely want to maintain a clean pack hierarchy - as alpha, he's on the council, so his pack is linked in that way. Having more pack members in there kind of muddies it. Odds are, it will be Nessa. Especially when you factor in that only the council gets immortality as part of the house gifts. I can't imagine Sebastian and Tristan taking immortality without Nessa. That same reason makes me think neither Sue nor Aurora will take it - there isn't room for both of them, and I'm starting to suspect they'll end up together.

Anyway, it's fun to speculate about, but I can't wait for the next! *grabby hands*

Another Amazing Magical Midlife book by K.F Breene!! You better bet I was awake at midnight reading. A lot of puzzle peices were put together here and for the first time they really talked about how they wanted everything to end once they met their goals. Leading me to believe that this story won't in fact continue forever like I hoped and dreamed. 😀 A new character is brought in who definitely fits the Ivy House Crew, and characters we know and love play a big part as well! There was one line that I cracked up laughing so hard that I had to stop reading for at least half an hour. Let's just say it has to do with replacing eyeballs with ...male... round parts. I definitely highlighted the part in my Kindle. Five Stars!

Disappointed

Characters too shallow, plot too rushed. I've loved this series until now. I'm a little sad about it. I feel there were so many missed opportunities with the characters and plot.

I adore KF Breene books. I think I have read everyone, and the Leveling Up series is one of my favourites. Oh, who am I kidding; they are all my favs.

KF weaves a story that is intriguing, and the narrative is wonderfully vivid and makes you laugh out loud. I was engrossed in the intrigue and drama, action, and the journey where I felt like a part of this kooky and lovable team. The comradery and hilarity between these characters make you want to sign up.

The Ivy House crew can't get it together, but I would not want them any other way. The first half of the book was a little more serious, and emotions are high but the second half, I laughed my head off.

I can't wait for more.

I stayed up all night to finish this because it's that good. I didn't realize how much I missed Jessie and her crew when I started reading it. Niamh and her cooler. Edgar and his killer flower experiment 😁 Cyra and the gnomes. There's also Mr. Tom and we have a new member who will fit right in. I had to laugh out loud a few times especially the part when they couldn't even form a straight line when being introduced. And they practiced for 2months! Hahaha. I can't wait for the next one and hope it will come sooner.

I was lucky enough to read an ARC of this book. The Leveling Up series is my all time favorite and this one didn’t disappoint. The characters feel like family and their banter had me literally laughing out loud. Without giving anything away I’ll just say I absolutely can’t wait to see what happens next!

Well, nothing that Jessie ever does goes smoothly, and there is no change here, but we are all here for the chaos that the Ivy House crew bring!
Much is still to be done to bring together the forces needed to defeat Momar and his mages so the crew set out to bring the shifter packs to their side. While they are doing this, Sebastian and Nessa are attempting to unsettle the mages and make Jessie look even more bada.., than she is! But things go wonky, in both situations, and the crew really have to pull together to sort things out.
I am loving the way Jessie and Austin are working together, to their strengths and without any back biting.

Ok first anything by KFB is an auto read because duh, so have I been itching to crack into this? Yes. Did it disappoint? Absolutely not!!! 🥳🥳 Magical Midlife Rescue is an absolute gem of a book! This story delivers the perfect mix of humor, magic, and heart, which always means you’re in for a wildly entertaining ride.

Jessie is still refreshingly relatable, strong, sassy, and delightfully imperfect. Watching her navigate a new life stage in this series with courage and snark has made me laugh out loud while also tugging at my heart in more than one occasion. I am embarrassed to say how many times my husband asked “what” and “now what happened” because I was laughing out loud. 🫣The supporting cast of quirky neighbors, magical creatures, and mysterious allies is unforgettable, and each interaction feels like stepping into a world you never want to leave and we even get introduced to a new character who seems like they’re going to fit right in.

What always shines through in this series is Breene’s ability to balance magical adventure with real, human themes of second chances, hilarious banter, self-discovery, and embracing who you are at any age, because we aren’t all freshly 18 with the hottest 309yr old vampire posing as a student at our higher school because he’s secretly been in love with us since our conception. 👀😕 It’s empowering, uplifting, and utterly magical. ✨✨

I couldn’t put it down, and as always I can’t wait for the next installment. If you love urban fantasy with humor, heart, and a heroine who proves that the best times of your life can begin at midlife, this is the perfect book for you. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

This was... not great. I feel like the author phoned it in or handed it off to an assistant to write. The book was was boring, yet felt rushed. And what was with that abrupt ending followed by a never-ending epilogue. I just kept waiting for it to end and wound up skimming through it.

I also thought there were too many POVs for a book with so little depth. And Tristan's was awful. I think that character is ruined for me now. Honestly, the whole thing was just lackluster.

I'd rather wait three years for a good book than get subpar installments churned out like fast food. Especially when I know the author can do better. And KF Breene can definitely do better. She's proved it time and again.

By far the most disappointing book in the series.

I'm biased - hence the 5 stars

I'm going to be honest. It only gets 5 stars because I love the author and these characters that I would read anything about and with them!
This book is only for long time readers of the series. And people who missed the mayhem.
In fact, no new readers to the series should approach it. Same goes for those who dipped in and out and barely remember details... Hardcore fans only.
Because there's a LOT of exposition - and I do mean a LOT! Also copious amounts of tell and don't show. I understand the reason, but even I got bored of it. If it was a new series or a new to me author, I would have easily walked away and not even finished. KF and the LU series is totally different. She can write a chapter from Fred's pov settling into the crew/house and I would read.
Why the 5 stars? Well because this weird crew will always get 5 stars from me.
Can hardly wait for the next one in the series.

One of my fav series of all times. However this one felt a little rushed. Could have been another 100-150 more pages. It was missing some of the usual funny banter and just some details in general. But overall I love this insane story and crew so much

This was a disappointing read compared to the rest of the series. The plot seemed disjointed, the characters barely touched on and little overall progression for Jessie and the team.

This could’ve been condensed and added to the first half of the next book. I’m hoping for a better read in the next one!

How?
How do they do it?

First.
I was so happy Breene is back in her game. Writing hilariously entertaining, weird, sarcastic and violently laugh infested books.

To top it off, Nicole Poole elevates this book to the next level.

We got a new character added, and I laughed so hard by Nicole Poole's narrating of this character that I had an asthma attack.
Seriously!

To be honest, I've already listened to this book twice, before I got time to sit down and write my review.

-and I know this will be a favourite re-listen in the future.

What can I say? I absolutely LOVE this series. I especially loved it this week because it felt like I needed a light hearted, fun, easy to fall into, wonderful story. This book definitely delivered.

We are already 11 books into the series so if you are still here, you already know why this series is so addicting. If you are new to the series, I really (REALLY) would not start with this book because you would be absolutely lost. Not that you couldn't follow the plot - because you probably could. The reason you really should go start from the beginning is because this series EXCELS at character development. There is such a strong element of found family and our FMC Jessie has lovingly built this family one person at a time. This is the craziest, zaniest, completely off the wall bonkers group of people who completely belong together and it is an absolute joy to laugh (and sometimes cry) at the crazy things they get into.

This book has a couple of storylines. There is the Nessa and Sebastian situation and the whole meeting the other Alpha's preparation, not to mention the preparing for Momar. I had a blast trying not to laugh as the gang practiced so hard to TRY to follow directions, yet when the time came to put these things into practice.....let's just say that they all reverted to their normal behavior. Yep, definitely made me laugh out loud.

This book did feel a little less developed than we have been used to, and that just might be because we have been spoiled with such wonderful books in this series. The ending felt a tad rushed, but I still enjoyed the heck out of it. Ms. Breene has so much credit built up with me that I just feel lucky when I see a new book has dropped. Yep - definitely lucky.

Now we wait for book 12. :)

It was so fun to get back into this world. This definitely was a 'filler' book sort of? There was a lot of set up for what I think is going to be the craziest last battle ever. God, I just love all of these characters so much, I did not care that this was a set up book. Everyone was getting up to their normal hijinks and poor Jessie and Austin are just SO EXHAUSTED. I'm glad to have a little more insight to Sebastian and Nessa and glimpses into what Aurora is going to bring to the table. ALSO Niamh- I AM NOT ready!!! Also, Fred is an awesome addition to the team!

I saw of KF's website that she is about 50% of the way done with the 12th book and I CAN'T WAIT.

Another fantastic book from K.F. Breene that’s filled to the brim with action, humor, and a whole lot of emotion! This is one of my favorite series and this latest installment really puts you through the wringer with all the feels.

If you love found family and female characters that are strong without being abrasive, this is definitely the series for you.

Despite being the 11th book in the series, Magical Midlife Rescue is still exciting and fresh, which is a testament to Breene’s impeccable writing. I honestly can’t wait to see what she has in store next for the Ivy House crew!

This series makes me laugh every time I read a new book in it. It’s absurd and odd and sarcastic in all the best ways. I can’t remember if Breene said there would be 2 more after this or more than that but I’m excited for any and all of Jessie’s crew to be featured in more books.

I loved this book. Full stop. Even though it had been a long time since I read the last one, I slipped right back into the Ivy House world like I never left. These characters feel like old friends, and the story just works from the start.

Tristan completely stole this book for me. He was solid, protective, and quietly emotional, and I loved every page he was on. I’m obsessed with him and Nessa and cannot wait for the book where they finally get their moment. The Ivy House crew rescuing Sebastian and Nessa was so satisfying, and Jessie going full scorched-earth on the shifter group holding the kids hostage was exactly the energy I wanted.

Niamh continues to be a favorite, and I’m beyond excited to see her fully embrace her Púca self going forward. This series is funny, heartfelt, chaotic in the best way, and just plain comforting to read. I love this world, I love these characters, and I will happily keep coming back for more.

I can’t lie, this is one of my favorite series. I’m not sure how every book continues to surprise me and keep me so captivated, but it does. I love this cast of characters. Not only to the main characters constantly evolve while remaining true to their Core personalities, but the side characters are entertaining and fully fleshed out. I like the things are coming together and making more sense… It is amazing how the groundwork has been laid in previous books and coming to fruition just now. I really can’t wait to continue to see more of Ivy house and all the characters in here. The only thing that would be better is if I was at Ivy house with them.

I am not sure why people continue to rave about this series. It could have been cut back to 2-3 full length novels and been much more satisfying. There was little to no forward movement of the overarching plot. It was so much of the same as the rest. I am invested in the characters but the story is killing me. Let’s move it forward and wrap it up please. Something big needs to happen asap.

Book eleven in a hilarious and magical series about a forty-year-old woman starting over, stumbling into something extraordinary, and discovering that life still has so much more to offer.

With Sebastian and Nessa out on their own, Jessie and the gang join Austin to rally the shifters. Starting with a group of open-minded alphas Kingsley knows well. Simple? Not quite. Meanwhile, the mages face a rising threat. Momar is dangerously close to finding them. Jessie continues to wrangles alphas and chaos, bit the edges are fraying.

• Rogue missions and deadly stakes
• Shifters, mages, and magical politics
• Chaos, strategy, and mischief
• Danger, isolation, and high tension
***

My husband says I have to put a warning on these books – once you pop you just won’t stop. Because, well, I didn’t. I read all eleven books that are currently published in under a week.

If like me, you’re craving a FMC who is a bit older and more mature, these are your books. Looking for genuinely hilarious books that will make you laugh until you cry? These are your books. Need multiple points of view and magical fantasy adventures? These are your books.

This book is possibly my favourite in the series, and I am not happy that I’ve now run out of stories about the Ivy House crew. I am desperate and cannot wait for book twelve.

Jessie and Austin are exhausted, they’re running on fumes, as are most of their crew. But they cannot afford to stop, the battle for Kingsley’s territory might have slowed Momar down but he is quickly picking up speed again. Jessie needs to somehow wrangle more gargoyles to their cause, but the shifters are priority number one for now.

Off the team goes again, with Tristan and Broken Sue ensuring that the shifter pack and gargoyle army are in perfect martial order. They could give the changing of the guards at Buckingham palace a run for their money. The Ivy House crew? Not so much, of course, they wouldn’t know how to behave and walk in a straight line if they were drilled night and day. And boy do I love them for it.

Its time to prove Jessie’s power, Austin’s control and make nice for the good of everyone. But the urgent need to bring Sebastian and Nessa home before its too late had me ready to throw this book across the room.

As you will see in all my reviews for this series the side characters are legit my favourites. As the books go on we meet more and more of them. You cannot conceive of the glorious weirdness, comedy gold and pure hearts that will come from Jessie’s growing crew. I have legit cackled, laughed out loud, snort and belly laughed my way through this series. They’re barmy, charming and downright dangerous.

Magical adventures with a FMC who knows better thanks to being over the sticky first part of her life, genuinely hilarious hijinks, and a story that’ll hook you so hard you’ll sacrifice sleep.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - I’m obsessed.

Series Info/Source: This is the 11th book in the Leveling Up series. I borrowed this on ebook from Kindle Unlimited.

Thoughts: This was a well done continuation of this series. This series has been going on for so long that these books are getting hard to review. This is like a long running soap opera at this point. The story makes some progress but not a lot (just like the last few books), and I continue to enjoy the characters and how crazy they are. These books would not stand alone well, and this is not a series where you start in the middle.

Jessie and Austin are trying to grow the convocation, and they need to convince a bunch of more open-minded alphas to join their cause. However, Jessie's crew is chaotic and there is worry that they will mess things up. Meanwhile, Sebastian and Nessa are out causing trouble on their own and Jessie is determined to being them back to Ivy House. She ends up hiring a hacker named Fred, that fits right in with the crazy Ivy House crew. Hopefully Fred will be able to track down Sebastian and Nessa before any irreversible harm is done.

I continue to enjoy the characters here. They all are growing both in power and in other personal ways. I really enjoyed the addition of Fred; she is crazy and quirky and fits right in with the very odd crew of Ivy House. The story is a bit convoluted at this points but it is making progress. Here the main purpose (aside from promoting the convocation) is to rescue Nessa and Sebastian.

I have mixed feelings about how often we jump character POV. It works okay because we've been reading about these characters forever and know them pretty well at this point. However, who we are hearing from at a given time is a bit willy nilly and I don't really understand the rhyme or reason of it.

I guess in summary, this was a fun read because I enjoy spending time with these crazy characters and watching them find stability and happiness. I have been reading this series for this long and probably won't stop anytime soon. Is this an awesome book? Eh, I don't think so; it is definitely not one of the stronger books in the series.

My Summary (4/5): Overall I liked this; it is well written, easy to read, and I enjoy spending time with these characters. The POV changes are a bit erratic and, while a lot happens, the storyline itself doesn't make a ton of progress here. However, that's okay. I like this world, the characters, and where the story is going. Is this the best book in the series? Definitely not. However, it is a solid addition to this series, and I plan to continue the series.
