I often wondered why the prince plucked me from the woods and locked me in his tower of stone. In time, I came to understand that a greedy hand never rests.
All my life, I waited for a sign that my existence had meaning, that there was more beyond the outskirts where I was born. I felt misplaced, a girl adrift in a world too vast and unkind.
But I escaped. I clawed my way out. I found freedom, piece by broken piece. I stitched myself back together with whatever I could find: shattered memories, cracked hopes, fragments of who I’d been.
I made myself whole again.
I learned it’s better to be named a devil than mistaken for a savior.
I won’t be seen as anyone’s salvation, I’ll become their reckoning.
The world will know that Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.
Set in a realm of myth, Maneater follows Odessa, a woman torn between two selves. When fate demands a choice—death or divinity—she must decide whether to die as a mortal or live as a god. Her story is a tale of love, betrayal, wrath, and above all, a woman unafraid to become the anti-heroine.
Alexandra M. Tran is a Vietnamese-American author of fantasy romance. Her writing explores the depths of emotion through character-driven storytelling. In addition to writing, Alexandra is a registered nurse. She finds joy in spending time with her husband and two cuddly cats. When she's not writing, she’s often daydreaming about her next story or lost in a fantasy novel by a sunlit window.
"The world will know that hell hath no fury like a woman scorned"
Alexandra Tran is a new author for me but after reading this one I will be adding all of her books to my tbr from here on out. The author's writing sucked me in from the very beginning, completely immersing me into a world of rich world building and dark atmosphere. Full of magic and gods, tension and betrayals, survival and rage. My favorite aspect is our FMC Odessa, she is a complete badass. She is ripped from the life she has known and thrown into one she did not ask for. Determined to find freedom she puts all her broken pieces back together to make herself whole again. Tran left me begging for more at the end of this book, desperate for book two and answers to so many questions.

Pre-Read Review: This cover and title alone is giving me all the vibes I need for this fall!
This book was shaped by emotion, by the quiet and fierce ways people break, heal, and find themselves again. Though touched with fantasy, at its heart it’s about the strength we don’t know we have, the selves we lose and reclaim, and the resilience we carry often without noticing.
I wrote this story for anyone who has felt adrift or undone, and for those who have fought their way back—not always whole, but changed, and still standing.
✨ “It was both a kind of healing and a breaking. Pieces of me had shattered, only to be remade into something new.” ✨
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Let's start with the book premise. It's about a woman who was born in the outskirts called Brier Len. She is taken from her home and forced into servitude to the Crown. In the beginning we see snippets of Odessa's life, and are introduced to her character. I will say, the FMC’s character development was well done and I felt like I was able to realistically see the changes and influences on the character's arc as a whole. In my opinion, it’s hard to make a character empathetically relatable from the start, but I felt it with Odessa. You can really feel her emotions, sympathize with her struggle, and root for her cause. The story feels very romantasy, but there are strong dark fantasy elements to it as well. There was some points in the first half that seemed a little confusing or left me questioning a lot, but there is a turn in the book that author creates and suddenly everything clicks and locks into place. It truly is one of my favorite styles of writing where it leaves the reader intrigued and full of questions, but then a development in the storyline happens and then it draws you in to little easter eggs and clues that were written in the story before you knew this new information. It does have spice (3/5) in the beginning, but later on there are a lot of romantic elements too. Overall, this type of book is totally different than what I've seen in romantasy and I loved it. It's moody and dark, and it displays a strong FMC that is flawed, but relatable. The author showcases emotions very well and the premise of an "anti-heroine" as the main character was so refreshing to see. I would definitely recommend it to those who like gothic and darker fantasy!
✨ There is no world, no realm, where you and I exist apart. Vengeance cannot exist without Wrath, and the purest Wrath is born from the thirst for Vengeance. We are two halves of the same twisted whole ✨
First and foremost as always thank you so much Alexandra for allowing me to read Maneater in advanced 🥹 I was instantly drawn in by the cover; the design embodies my soul! This book will be living rent free in my mind for a WHILE now and I'll be patiently (impatiently) awaiting book 2 in this duology because I NEED TO KNOW what comes next!
In this book we have Odessa, the FMC who is a peasant living in Brier Len; taking care of her memory ailing mother, and drunkard father. One day the royal knights comes to her cottage and demands she must come to the castle to serve the Heir of Hyrall; she is frantic and does not want to go. A year passes and she is the Heir's (Gadriel's) favourite consort. She serves him every night; slowly gaining his trust until one day she sees her chance to escape and finally be free... but will that freedom last?
Odessa the FMC has gone through so much, and continues to be faced with so much. She's fierce, determined and just ultimately wants to be free and find herself.
I love how in this book we are introduced to characters who add substance to either her journey or growth. The ending had me completely shook and I need to know what happens next 🙈
This book is a storm of revenge, woman rage, and injustice. It blends fantasy with romance, but the love story isn’t the main path - instead, it’s a dark, tragic, and unfair world where one woman fights to claim her vengeance and control her wrath.
What stood out to me most was the raw emotion. The anger feels real and the thirst for revenge is almost contagious. It’s not a comforting read, but it’s the kind of book that makes you feel - even when it hurts.
At times, I found myself a little confused with some details of the world-building. There are moments where I wished for more clarity to keep me in the book. Still, that didn’t take away from the overall power of the story - the atmosphere was very strong!
If you’re looking for a fantasy that isn’t afraid to dive into the darker side of justice, with a heroine fueled by rage and survival, Maneater will leave a mark.
"No." My eyes hardened. "I will never love again. To love is to suffer. To love is to lose yourself. To love is to be shattered. And I will never let myself break again." 💔
- dark fantasy - betrayal and bound - feminine rage - ancient forgotten gods - hidden identity - dark magic - wrath and AHHH OMG IM PREPARED TO RIDE AT DAWN!!!!
Rating 5/5 stars Spice 2.5/5
Initial thoughts:
HOLY- i need time to processs ALL OF THAT! So many unanswered questions. I need VENGEANCE AND BLOOD after this book! ISTG. Again i dont trust anyone. All i feel is pure rage.
Review:
This book is for the people who lost themselves, bent, and broken, but now ready to take their power and find their voice. Odessa may not be your average heroine: stolen, broken, but never beaten. She isn’t here to be saved. She’s here to take back everything, her power, and just probably watch the world burn. She definitely has claws and is not afraid to show them.
Our FMC was dragged from her village and forced into a world of gold chains and painted smiles. She learns to survive as the prince’s consort or live the life at court as the prince’s favorite courtesan. She never chose this life, but she’s determined not to come in last place among the courtesans. However this year will be different.
This time, she has planned her great escape, and it’s time for her to choose herself and her happiness.
If you relish in fierce FMCs reclaiming their power like (Prisoner by Raven Kennedy vibes) or dark fantasy, with ancient forgotten gods resurfacing, books something like What Lies Beyond the Veil by Harper L. Woods, then better add Maneater to your fall read TBR.
Odessa finds herself suddenly removed from her quiet life in Brier Len and forced to serve a cruel and calculating prince.
Since the very first day, she plots her freedom. But the closer she gets, the more dangers present. Fate offers her a choice…and now she must decide what she’ll become.
Tropes: ✨Anti-heroine x anti-hero 💫Ancient gods & forgotten power ⛓️💥Twisted devotion 📜Cursed fates 🤝Oaths & bargains 🖤Dark romantic fantasy 🌶️: open door
This book was mindblowing! There are so many layers and facets of Odessa that are skillfully revealed throughout the story. A victim of abusē, manipulation, and betrayal, Odessa seeks to be the master of her own fate. She hones her wiles and wrath to become favored and powerful. But freedom remains just out of reach.
Maneater is a tale of survival and Odessa’s journey is more than mere self-discovery— it’s a reckoning. But she must also accept the darkness within. With inspired twists and a jaw-dropping ending, I am screaming for the next book!
Maneater channels themes of dark magical worlds, an outcast heroine, and manipulation that would appeal to fans of One Dark Window, Anathema, and the Plated Prisoner series.
Huge thanks to the author for the review copy opportunity. This is my honest and voluntary review.
This book was excellent but heartbreaking. Odessa endured so much but she is strong and smart. When her moment came, her wrath was glorious and brutal and I loved every minute. 😂 I cannot wait for that P.O.S maggot prince to feel her wrath. 😈🔥
Thank you Alexandra for the ARC. Please don't have us wait too long for book 2, lol. 💜
3.5 ⭐️ It reads like two different stories in one, maybe even three. I was all ready to feel the feminine rage of a reborn goddess of wrath, but of course, stupid power-hungry men had to ruin it. Again.
Maneater by Alexandra M. Tran is unlike anything I usually read, and I’m so grateful I had the chance to read an early copy.
Since it is pre-release I will write the review pretty vague and spoiler free.
I already loved Alexandra’s writing from The Divine Shallows, and this story is just as powerful, sharp, and immersive here. She pulls you right into her world, and this story absolutely consumed me.
Maneater delivers exactly what it promises: a dark, grim, emotionally intense romantasy that’s hard to put down. The premise is haunting, and the themes of betrayal and rage help deliver an unforgettable story!
I found myself deeply resonating with Odessa. She’s raw, flawed, fierce, and painfully human. Like other reviewers have said, even if you haven’t lived her story, you’ll still see parts of yourself in her.
The quote I listed above is just one of many that hit home for me, and it is something that I have personally struggled with throughout my life. I didn't expect to connect with Odessa or even the story the way I had and both now have a special spot in my heart.
If you're looking for a story with feminine rage, oaths and bargains, cursed fates, heartbreak, and power, all wrapped up in stunning writing, Maneater is for you.
This isn’t a happy or a love story, its a story full of injustice, revenge and feminine rage and whilst I support women’s rights, more importantly I support women’s wrongs.
Its a fantasy, with immaculate dark and gothic vibes with romance elements. Its dark, tragic and haunting and absolutely captivating. The writing was beautiful, immersive and engaging.
Our FMC Odessa is flawed yet strong, and despite not realising her power, she is ready to reclaim it and succumb to the darkness. Ultimately, she is women who just wants her freedom. In parts, I found myself resonating with her. The story is hers, its about her self-discovery. She is the story, the plot and everything.
I need the next book immediately, i’m literally here theorising on where the story is going. I have questions.. & I need answers!!
What a unique and refreshing gothic fantasy romance!!
This story placed me in a setting I’ve always wanted to be, heavily focused and inspired by nature and the small details of the woods.
I thoroughly enjoyed the deep feelings and emotions this story drew from. We get to follow our strong FMC on her self-discovery journey through many real-life hardships, opening herself up to love after betrayal and yearning for self-empowerment.
You get a little bit of everything in this book, from gods/demigods, ancient magic, gothic settings, royalty, love, quests and survival.🖤
That was a wild ride! It grabbed me from the beginning. The way the author just pulls you right in and holds your attention was so good. The flashbacks were placed well, and didn’t take away from the overall story. There was a moment in time, where I was like what is going on but I fully believe it was stepping stones for book 2! The ending was phenomenal. Honestly, this book will be on my mind for a while! This book comes out on October 1st! I recommend you grab a copy!
This was my first book by Alexandra, and I devoured it. I was hooked from the start.
This is the definition of female rage, and it was the perfect read for what's currently going on.
Odessa is a fierce FMC. She's strong even when she feels broken. She's smart as hell, too. She's a beautiful young woman, taken from the outskirts to serve the prince in whatever way he chooses. He just so happens to choose her as his favorite consort. Forced to please him, she keeps her distance from the other women and finds a way to escape.
There were twists I did not expect. There were a few chapters of her past that helped show us who Odessa really was without giving too much away.
The pacing was perfect, and the world building was exceptional.
That ending had me on the edge of my seat and feeling as much rage as Odessa. I can't wait for the second book in this duology.
*I received an early copy of this book, and these are my actual thoughts that I am leaving voluntarily*
Thank you so much in advance for handling me this ARC (my first one ever) in exchange for an honest review!
Dear gods! I don't know where to start. If I brag about the maniac prince, if I cry for the scholar or if I punch that demigod straight in his nose. 🫣😤 Giiirl! *breaths in deeply* I honestly started the book with not much of any kind of expectation... because the last book I have read was the most awful and disgusting thing ever. I might had faith, tho, that Maneater could bring me something good to clean my mind. Tho, around page 29 or so I almost started having a thing because of those sexually explicit (but at the same time with a very clean language) scenes. I had to force myself to not give up because the storyline was captivating, it was pretty good. But I got traumatised by the last book. Lol Hopefully it were the only (explicit) scenes. 🙏🏻
All the journey reading this piece was made of myself feeling so many different things. Odessa is a damn tough girl, the kind that we all should be. Even if she slips in during impulsive moments, she doesn't bend easily. She realizes things quickly stopping them at the right moment. She is also pretty strong and stubborn. She goes ahead with her ideas, no matter what.
I was totally fine with the time-lapses. I think it was pretty easy to understand when the story got backwards or forwards. And that, in fact, was something that somehow enriched the story. I am still god damn wandering why Caz left! 🥺 I am sure, at least I hope so, Alexandra will give us an answer in the second book, for gods sake!!! I feel the book he left for her had some hidden message about their love, about why he left or so. I got so infuriated with her throwing it into the fire! Geez. 😡 I know she was madly sad but gaaal... don't throw a book in a fire! It hurt us! 😭🤣
I could easily place myself in Odessa's feet. I easily could imagine Brier Len's forest, Mag's cottage, Hyrall, Falhurst and Thoriel's places as also imagine some details such as colors, shapes, lights, textures and smells. I kinda felt what Odessa felt in specific situations. Damn! There were times that were a bit suffocating, heart-skipping and so on. Which made me devour pages more quickly.
I must say Raithe gives me Eric Draven's vibes, for his look and Vangeance power but at the same time, oh boy.... he seemed an irritating and clinging Emo guy that I had the urge to go inside my phone and punch him. Let Odessa alone, bro. Don't try to force her with whatever you have to say/explain. Uffff! 😤 Yes their powers align with each other, he is a sweet but... bro, she is not obliged to love you, ok? 😒
I was not expecting to see Gadriel again, just in the second book. 😑 Which surprised me indeed! If he was somehow off in the beginning... at the end I swear that I wanted to curse this lunatic prince, not just for the obvious but for all the disdainful actions he made meanwhile. I want to see him rot! 💀
I wanna see her rage raise. I wanna see her get all her wrath out! Odessa is a 'Godessa'. 💅🏻
I hope the next book comes quickly, Alex! Pleaaaase!!!!
Topics to consider: • New Adult Ghotic Fantasy • Gods/Devils folk believings • Strong FMC + FMC Rage • Time-lapse Present-Past-Present • Sexual content - Explicit but clean scenes to Steamy or just a light reference. • Self sabotage feelings/thoughts • Mental disability • Betrayl/Obsession/Insanity • Death/Murdering/Execution • Huge cliffhanger

What I loved about this book: ❤️ World Building - OMG the world building in this book is fantastic! It is rich and has a depth to it that is unlike anything else I've read. There are so many different aspects to this world as we move through the story and all are well fleshed out.
❤️ The Characters - The Characters, especially the MFC, Odessa, are relatable, you can feel her pain and her unbelievable drive to change her circumstances. The Relationship between her and the other courtesan is volatile. Gadriel is a character that is well put together, but has a darkness beneath his calm exterior. The side characters are well written and have a story of their own to dwell on.
❤️ The Story - The story was fantastic! It really drew me in, and many of nights I stayed up WAY to late doing that whole "one more chapter" thing we all end up doing when we read a good book. I'm looking forward to the next book!
What I thought could have been better: 🤔 I kinda wish it was longer, but that's what series are all about!
Overall: You should pre-order this book now! Or get it when it comes out on October 1st. It is a engaging book and you won't be disappointed!
🦅 Raven Fact - Inspired by The Ravens in the book: They also use their intellect to put together cause and effect. A study in Wyoming discovered that during hunting season, the sound of a gunshot draws ravens in to investigate a presumed carcass, whereas the birds ignore sounds that are just as loud but harmless, such as an air horn or a car door slamming. 🥰 Favorite Quote: "What Remained was stubbornness, and a numb determination that carried me forward"
I got this book free from @authoralexandramtran for my honest review.
“There is no world, no realm, where you and I exist apart. Vengeance cannot exist without Wrath, and the purest Wrath is born from the thirst for Vengeance. We are two halves of the same twisted whole.”
Female rage and fury blend together to create a fantasy which gripped me by the throat and had me raw with anger on Odessa’s behalf. We have gods, demigods, dark magic, betrayal, all the components of a compelling dark fantasy without feeling overused.
This book strands in a league of its own as I’m unable to compare other similar fantasies with its structure and premise. I wasn’t expecting this to be part of a series and so I’d beware that it does end on a cliffhanger, I’m already desperate for the next instalment.
I would say that this isn’t necessarily a romance, it’s a book about a woman reclaiming her power and embarking on a journey of self discovery. This is only the beginning of Odessa’s journey and we are only just beginning to see how she will utilise her newly unlocked power. I can’t wait to see more of her and see her wrath unleashed.
"It was both a kind of healing and a breaking. Pieces of me had shattered, only to be remade into something new."
If you loved Pocketful of Crows, One Dark Window, or Plated Prisoner, you’ll definitely fall for Maneater. . This dark fantasy has that same addictive atmosphere, with a morally gray MC whose tragic backstory keeps you hooked from the very first page. . The plot is gripping and fast-paced, ending on a massive cliffhanger that leaves you desperate for the sequel. . As for the romance: yes, it’s there, but it never overshadows the story. I really appreciated how consistent Odessa felt as a character — when a demigod suddenly shows up declaring “YOU ARE MINE”, her response is basically “hold up, you don’t even know me like that.” Refreshing, right? . The only thing I would have wished for was smoother handling of the timeline shifts in the first half, which made the narrative feel a bit fragmented. But honestly? It's a fantastic read. I absolutely loved it and cannot wait for the next book! . thanks for the arc 💜
Odessa has been locked in a tower for years and had accepted her fate. Until one day she decides she wants more. She wants to find out who she is and what her purpose is after feeling lost and misplaced her entire life.
I was so blown away by this book, I still think about it constantly weeks later! When it started, I thought I knew what kind of book it would be and I was so wrong. I never knew where it was going and I was so immersed into Odessa’s story that I didn’t want it to end. The pacing was amazing, the characters had so much depth, and this was a unique and interesting plot. I was so emotionally invested I can’t wait for book two, bring me all the feminine rage!!
Thank you so much to MTMC Tours and Alexandra M Tran for providing this physical copy.
I am lucky enough to be on Alex’s street team as I am a HUGE fan of her first book, the Divine Shallows (also a 5 star from me FYI get on that guys) and when Alex shared the news she had been working on something new and different I couldn’t wait to read it and my goodness….i devoured it. This books has a darkness to it that just fed my soul in the best way possible (laughing as I’m writing this because I’ve literally just finished and totally hyped up) Odessa is such a badass I loved her instantly, from her vulnerability to her determination, she’s such a complex but totally loveable and relatable character, she really goes on a journey and you can totally see how she has wound up in all these different situations she finds herself in. There is a tension in this book that I just loved, yearning, a lot of yearning and wanting and it’s just brilliant. Read it. Immediately. Thanks Alex you’re the best!
I received this ARC from Alexandra M. Tran and team in return for an honest review.
This book had me engrossed from the first few pages and I read it in two sittings. The world-building and character development were spot on. The God/Devil magic system is captivating and I think the approach is unique. There are twists and turns throughout. I really liked the FMC, Odessa. She perseveres through so many hardships and continues to pick herself up and fight. She is strong, independent, and I can't wait for book 2 to see how her journey ends!
Odessa is a strong young woman who is put through trials and tribulations of life, we see her ripped from what she once knew and thrown into a life that she didn’t ask for. Odessa does everything she can to get back to her old life, but fate had other plans for her. I love it so much and can’t wait for the second half, I’m on the edge of my seat.
Oh this book. THIS BOOK! It broke my heart, whilst healing it all at the same time. It was so powerful and I felt intense emotions until the very last page. This book will live in my head rent free for a long while.
Alexandra does it again! Odessa is such a badass FMC and I feel as though a lot of us can relate to her in some way. She experiences hardships, betrayal, and self-discovery. We get a little bit of everything in Maneater from love and magic, to gods, royalty, and survival, all in immersive and epic writing. The pacing was perfect (it wasn't super fast paced nor did I feel like it "dragged" at anytime). I can't wait to see what happens next in book 2! Again, thank you to Alexandra for the ARC opportunity. <3 She is absolutely one of my favorite authors. And I'm lucky enough to be part of her street team (thank you so much!). If you haven't read her first novel, The Divine Shallows, and are a fan of fantasy then what are you waiting for?
4.5 ⭐️ I could not put this book down! Thank you so much, Alexandra for the opportunity to ARC read your amazing novel!
I was hooked from the very beginning. It absolutely delivered on the dark and gothic vibes. The feminine rage presented in the story felt so real and raw! I absolutely love when an author can make you FEEL their words on the page. I really enjoyed the FMC and her journey to self discovery as well as her character development!
This book had everything you could possibly want out of a dark romantic fantasy. You get dark magic, fantastic world building, spice, ancient gods, betrayal and morally grey heroes. It is the perfect addition to your fall and spooky season tbr!
Well done Alexandra Tran on this fantastic work of art! 👏🏽
This book is bleak. Its overarching tone is sorrow and pain and loss and a burden to bear. A different fantasy than a lot I’ve been reading. There are three primary males but there is no romance. Interesting and relatively unique. Blog Review at-
Maneater is a dark fantasy packed with an intriguing FMC, self discovery, wrath and vengeance. The story is full of surprises- when I thought I had it figured out, it went in a different direction. The plot is unique, the darker gloomy atmosphere hooked me in, and that cliffhanger at the end…😳. Settle in for a slow burn, angst, betrayal and anti heroine/hero. Excited to see the next book in the series!
