I read (& didn't finish), book 1 as part of SPFBO8, but as I had a rough idea of what was happening, I decided to give book 2 a shot, and surprisingly I quite enjoyed my time in this world. The writing felt a lot more solid, and the characters were a lot more rounded and accessible.
