ARC Review

I read this book at the perfect time. Cool temps, misty/rainy weather and while I was cooking my favorite soup. I love the strangers to lovers, writer/bartender, small town trope with a sprinkle of spice.

I definitely plan on reading more from R.S Barry!

Thank you Riley Paws Publishing, and author R.S Barry for the ARC copy.

I’m very grateful I was able to read this as an Arc reader.

I’ll start by this was not an easy read for me. I had a hard time getting into it and that’s okay. The things that made it hard for me is what another person absolutely loves.

The underlying plot of health issues I think could really resonate with other people struggling with the same things. How your partner reacts to it and the difficulty of feeling like a burden. Having everything in your life suddenly change with an actual diagnosis. As a chronic illness girly I found this part of the book great.

There was a lot of spice in the book. With different scenarios every time. I would give it a 4/5 for spice.

The characters both have a hard time letting others in, whether it’s because they keep people back or because they felt unworthy of other’s love. This was a huge struggle in the book. Both characters to afraid to let the other in.

This book has others that go more in depth with other characters in the book. Do you need to read the others to read this? No, there was just enough detail to go over what the other books would cover. It was well done.

ARC

I am so charmed by this series as a whole and this 4th installment certainly adds to that feeling. Back in Friendship Springs, we follow Asher, long time bartender and close friend to our other established characters, as he meets Gabby, an author struggling to spice up her fantasy novel. She needs some practical instruction that Asher is more than happy to provide.

This novel has more spice than Barry’s other works. What I find cool structurally is that the spice is front-loaded. It’s at the beginning when their relationship is more casual. When things get more serious, the writing focus on the relationship and deeper emotional themes.

Speaking of structure, I love the breaks in between sections of the book that are excerpts from the novels being written within One More Chapter.

Asher has always been a charming character but this book certainly made him more well rounded. We see his talents, his insecurities, his friendships from his perspective, and a bit of his past. I loved being able to dive more deeply into a character I already really enjoyed.

Gabby is the first “outside” female lead of this series (the first 3 following the 3 friends and co-owners of the restaurant Pop). And she is such a delight. I think there’s a fine line when a character is written to be awkward…where they just turn out reading more silly. Barry gets the balance right. Gabby is endearing and relatable. While she has her silly and comic moments, she is grounded in reality as a well-rounded character.

Not only do we see her struggling and being stuck with her writing (something all creatives can relate to), we also follow her on her chronic illness journey. One character tells Gabby she is grieving the “normalcy” of the life before her diagnosis. Her coming to terms with this is a highlight of the book for me. While not on the same health journey as Gabby, I dealt with health issues for nearly a year that stripped me of my independence. Asking for and accepting help can be difficult. It was affirming to see a character battle with the frustration of needing help but wanting to still be able to do things herself…for things not to be “wrong”. Kudos to Barry providing readers with this insight. She has been open about her own chronic illness, and I find this representation important and valuable.

A super enjoyable read. Can’t wait to see what is next for Barry and this series…was there a hint of book 5 being about Johnson 👀? I hope so!

The exact note is 3.5 ✨.

Thank you for the ARC. I feel very privileged and honored.

I had a good time reading this book; I just didn’t get into it as much as I hoped to. The spice was okay but not memorable, and the plot was great but a bit unbelievable at times (especially at the end).

Also, our MCs had a few immature reactions throughout the story that would fit more if they were in their early 20s, not their 30s.

It wasn’t for me, but it is well written, and if you like these tropes, you might love it:

- Spicy lessons
- Popular author x barman
- Strangers to lovers
- Small-town romance
- Hidden identity
- Chronic illness representation

RS Barry is a talented writer with a clear passion for the romance genre—and I mean that as the highest praise. She knows the beats of the genre well and the writing in the sexual scenes is well done. Yet some structural choices and trope- or genre-motivated choices kept me from fully enjoying this. I am all for authentic representation and complex characters but the way the story moved just didn’t work for me.

Thank you, however, to the author for the ebook ARC. All opinions are mine alone.

I’ll start by saying thank you for letting me be a part of your ARC team.
It was my first book by this author, but certainly not the last. I really liked that the main characters were imperfect-they argued and struggled with some issues. There were so many funny moments that made me laugh out loud, and others that were touching.
I also appreciated that the author sent the main characters to therapy, which highlights the importance of psychological health.

4.5 stars,
3 chili peppers (open door and detailed most of the time)

My first from RS Barry, and I’ll definitely be up to read the next in this series if another one comes! (I may or may not go backwards, since some of the couples are happily together in this book and I selfishly don’t want to go backwards to experience their rocky points 🤣)

I share a few of the chronic illnesses represented in the FMC, though I don’t experience them the same way. Part of why I was intrigued to read this was because I wondered if they’d just be a blip, or a ~quirky feature~ but then nobody talks about how it actually affects day to day life. I was pleasantly surprised, and I appreciated that there were “real stakes” - I feel like in a lot of romance books that take place in “the real world” (not romantasy, etc) the couple’s proving grounds are often not very realistic.

Case in point, the misunderstanding trope tends to be something that’d be *so easily remedied* but somehow people just… don’t… have conversations? But the misunderstandings in this book are so realistically layered. There’s a lot of trauma and grief that comes along with getting a lifelong illness diagnosis. There’s a lot of trauma and grief associated with having to pivot your life’s dreams, only to be continuously devalued in your next career journeys. Or to have people constantly using you.

Also, I’m not sure if I’d call this a third act breakup trope - more like a 2.5 act breakup. (Just a heads up if those are problematic to you) - but they handle it like actual adults haha

Lastly, I was obsessed with the “book-within-a-book” aspect of this book! Both of our main characters are writers, so you get snippets of what they’re writing and refining and it gives you such a fun layer of their own inner workings!

Lastly lastly - the spice. For a “teach me” style book, I’d say there’s a decent amount of spice up front, but the detailed scenes are definitely tempered as you get into the meatier bits of the conflict in the plot arc.

All in all, definitely enjoyed this one, and read it quickly! Thanks so much for letting me read an ARC of it!

“I could help you. If you wanted.”

It starts with a misunderstanding, that leads to another misunderstanding, but also hard truths?

One More Chapter is the 4th book of the Friendship Springs Series and is an interconnected standalone. Spoilers for the other books in this book, but other books aren’t necessary for understanding of this book.

Characters:
Asher “Ash” Ramstead- bartender/partial new owner of Pop. He has a secret life.
Gabriella “Gabby” Boyle- famous fantasy author

Okay, I loved this book but the storyline starts out pretty awkwardly. Gabby takes an insane leap based on Ash’s offer to help her. It just seemed too unrealistic and I had a hard time getting around that. But, the reasons why she made the leaps are explored further later in the book.

I didn’t really like the characters pet names. One kinda gave me the ick because all I kept thinking of was a Game of Thrones character. Luckily, they’re not used for the whole book.

I loved Ash and the complexity of his character. Also I liked the vulnerability and his working through his self esteem and perception of himself. He learned his value. He’s also so gone for Gabby before she is for him.

I empathized with Gabby and her complex feelings around her new diagnosis and medical trauma. Also, it was great to see representation of handling caregivers and understanding their POV while trying to live through illness without feeling like a burden. She too learns a lot about herself and finds her inner strength.

Together, Gabby and Ash are cute and such a super couple. It just took them time to get there, once everything is out in the open.

There are multiple “book within a book” moments and reading the progress of both are a lot of fun.

What to Expect:
📚 Dual POV
📚 Sexy lessons
📚 One bed
📚 Roommates with benefits
📚 Reformed playboy
📚 Small town
📚 Found family
📚 Chronic illness Rep (POTS/MCAS)
📚 Mental Health Rep (ADHD)
📚 He falls first
📚 Characters in their 30’s
📚 Epilogue

Spice:
🌶️🌶️🌶️/5

3.5/5 stars

I really wanted to love this story - I've read everything else by R.S. and the whole Friendship Springs series had been great. But this just didn't quite hit for me and I was sad about that. (also, you don't need to read the previous books to read this one - the other characters make brief appearances but you don't miss anything by not reading the previous books - but I do highly recommend them) I LOVED getting Asher's story - and for the most part I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the man behind the pretty face and great body. He's smart, thoughtful and caring - on top of being a romance writer - which I loved that little twist. FMC Gabby was a little much for me - chaos walking around in the wild and some parts were really funny but other times it was a bit much for me.

After they have their strangers - lovers, smexy lessons part and continue to try and develop a real relationship - Gabby is diagnosed with a chronic illness - after years of being told it's "nothing'. This part of the story was really the saving grace for me as a reader. It was raw and authentic - both from his side (trying to be a good partner balancing care with being overbearing) and her side (having her whole life upended and trying to navigate a "new normal"). They both struggled letting people into their lives - having been hurt by those closest to them in the past. Thank you R.S. Barry for another ARC read.

Loved it, loved it, loved it! This is my first R.S. Barry book, but it will not be my last....I'll be checking out her other 3 novels after this one.

First, we have an adorable meet-cute? Check.
Smitten kitten MMC? Check.
Quirky, but fun/kind FMC? Check.

Beautiful recipe for a great book. But my absolute favorite part? The fact that we got to read about couple-y issues!! You know how sometimes after you read that HEA ending and then you're wondering if they'd make it? Half of this story is what happens after the "HEA" and oh my goodness I was obsessed. Absolutely ate it up.

Barry did an amazing job at making these characters feel like real people that I could stumble upon, with real quirks, and real flaws. And they know that relationships take real effort and understanding.

I loved every second, and can't wait to read more!

overall: highly recommend

I absolutely devoured this book!!!! It’s a fast read, engaging and the chemistry is *chefs kiss*.

Gabby is a quirky, awkward, relatable FMC. Asher is the hot Viking, jack of all trades bartender. Together they make one hot couple. The Spicy scenes were perfect and actually made sense to the progress of the story. Not just random sex to fill the pages!

I loved the aspect of them both being writers and getting to see snippets of the novels they’re writing inside the book was really great too. I really enjoyed this installment of Friendship Springs. The family and environment created by R.S Barry is amazing. Anna, Bree, Nic and all the guys is so comforting. Gabby being added to their little group is seamless. I can’t wait to read what comes next.

I absolutely loved how the author kept me giggling through most of the book, when it comes to Gabby's & Asher's interactions. Introvert female lead meet extrovert male lead ("playboy") "Viking" bartender — irresistibly cute, perfect mix of awkward charm and flirty fun.

The author delicately explores vulnerability and trust, allowing both characters to grow and find strength in each other. I loved the way their walls slowly came down, revealing just how much they needed one another. The author does incredible job peeling back those layers with care and compassion.

The “famous author meets hidden author” subplot adds an extra layer of sweetness where they bond over writing and sharing creative ideas — making their connection even more special. Beautiful read indeed — adorable, heartfelt, and full of charm.

Grateful for the ARC opportunity from the author 🙌.

I wanna thank R.S. Barry for giving me the opportunity to read this as an ARC!

Rating: 4/5⭐

If you love these tropes, this is a book for you:
📘 Author x barman
📘 Strangers to lovers
📘 Roommates with one bed
📘 Small town romance
📘 Chronic illness rep
📘 He falls first
📘 Spicy lessons

I really loved this book even tho some things are a bit unbelievable, like in the beginning. But overall I really enjoyed this book. It was such an easy read, I finished it in one day! Both characters were easy to love, like how the FMC was so quirky and unfiltered. And both the MMC and FMC had real life problems which can make people really relate and connect to them.

I loved reading Asher and Gabby's story! I usually have more to say but I can't put it into words 😅 but this was a great read. I was a little annoyed he never told Gabby his secret identity, but I get it (although if he just told her it woulda saved a lot of heartache for them both 😑 but I digress) at least his perspective on male authors made sense; "Romance written by men rarely does well. It's escapism for women–they want men written by women." - Asher gets it. Gabby was unfilter and it was hilarious! I think one of my fave quotes of hers was "They say karma is a bitch, but I think hindsight is the real cunt." MA'AM! 🤣🤣🤣 10/10 recommend! Thank you @authorrsbarry for the privilage to be part of your ARC team!

Asher is a bartender, bar owner, and loyal friend.

Gabby is quirky, an author, and is dealing with health issues.

When they meet, Gabby is hiding in a closet when Asher comes in to change a keg. He offers to help her with her spicy scenes when she word vomits her fears, meanwhile, she’s got a meet and greet and a book signing.

Once this book got going I really did enjoy it, but i found the third act breakup kind of silly. I understand he kept things from her, but it wasn’t anything to end a relationship with him over, especially when he’s been there for her through her diagnosis.

This is my first book by this author but will not be my last!

She is a fantasy writer struggling with writers block after her agent informs her the publisher wants super spicy scenes in the newest novel. She meets Asher while in Florida at a book signing event. He agrees to help her. Things begin developing between them when a medical scare pushes their relationship to the limits. Asher also has a secret that he has been keeping and when she accidentally discovers it before he is ready to reveal it things take an emotional turn. This book was so powerful. I was so engrossed in the story. I just don’t have enough words to describe how incredible it truly was. This is my first book by R.S. Barry , I can’t wait to read the other books in the series I missed. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book provided by the publisher.

Thank you to the author for allowing me to be an arc reader for One More Chapter. Unfortunately, this one fell a little flat for me. I wish the conflict toward the end had been something with her agent rather than a fight between the couple. Also... Imp as the pet name had me raging. It was quite possible my least favorite nickname I have ever heard for a character and it definitely impacted my reading experience.

ARC Review of One More Chapter by R. S. Barry (mild spoilers)

I absolutely loved the beginning of this book, how to mcs meet and fall for each other, it was such a good read. However I was not a fan of the conflict between them that lead to a 3rd act breakup, it felt blown out of proportion to me and made me really dislike the fmc, which was disappointing because I loved the rest of the book so much! The rest of the book was really good so i do still recommend it!

I absolutely devoured this book. I like the secondary characters as well as the main characters. The second half of the book seemed more rushed than the first half in the amount of time covered. Forced proximity, sex lessons, strangers to lovers, dual pov. Chronic illness representation. 3.5/5 spice.

I could not stop reading it, it was absolutely amazing. I loved that the characters and the situations all felt real and relatable.
Little bit of Hallmark, little bit of spice, little bit of humor, and a HEA when all things are said and done.
