Even if I Perish

Rate this book
Based on a miraculous true story of courage in the face of impossible odds.

"If I perish, I perish." A sermon based on Queen Esther's famous words spurs music teacher Mary Cornish to action. She volunteers to escort a group of 15 girls from England to Canada as part of Britain's World War II child evacuation program.

All is well aboard the SS City of Benares until September 17, 1940. With a storm brewing in the North Atlantic, a German U-boat releases its torpedo and breaches the ship's hull. Do the Nazis know ninety children are on board?

In the scramble to save as many lives as possible, Mary lands in a crowded lifeboat as the only female among crew members, passengers, and six young boys. In the storm's aftermath, two things soon become crystal that Lifeboat 12 has become separated from all the others, and that Mary has been placed here for such a time as this--even if she perishes.

After reading the first book in the Even If series, I knew I would be in for a historical retelling that would tug at my heart and make me feel as if I was onboard the SS City of Benares. Basing children's escort Mary Cornish's thoughts and mission off of the book of Esther, this is a poignant story about what it means to be faithful in everyday responsibilities while acknowledging that God's hand can bring us to some very unique places and situations. While readers may already be aware of the fate of this particular ocean liner, this book offers an intricate plot that engages the imagination through detailed correspondence and emotional experiences that lead to a suspenseful adventure. There is no shortage of heart-stopping moments, especially when considering the lives of the children who were sent aboard Benares to flee for safety to Canada from the United Kingdom.

This book marvelously speaks to how God can accomplish His purposes through us when we step out in obedience, even when facing an unknown future. Terrie Todd's account of Mary Cornish reveals a woman who encounters doubts and fears in the midst of war, but who longs to make a difference for His kingdom. As a result, Even If I Perish delivers in bringing Mary as a person to life and in creating a setting that is positively gripping and unforgettable. If you have a penchant for history and for stories that whisk you away to peril and danger while crying out to God, reading this book will bring the meaning of "for such a time as this" to heart in a profound way.

Excellent, captivating, unputdownable, heartbreaking and heroic.

I can count on well-written, fascinating and compelling historical fiction from Author Terrie Todd. Even if I Perish is a perfect example of this. The story gripped me from the start and didn't let go until the last page.

I devour historical fiction from talented authors that teach me about true life events that I know nothing about. Even if I Perish covers a tragic event and follows the lives of those in Lifeboat #12 adrift in the Atlantic. Before I even write this review I'm deep into a research rabbit hole learning more about the sinking of the SS City of Benares, Mary Cornish, and the survivors. The ship was hit by a German torpedo on September 17, 1940. The ship SS City of Benares was carrying children from England to Canada during WWII, organized by the Children's Overseas Reception Board.

""If I perish, I perish." A sermon based on Queen Esther's famous words spurs music teacher Mary Cornish to action. She volunteers to escort a group of 15 girls from England to Canada as part of Britain's World War II child evacuation program."

I highly recommend Even if I Perish to lovers of historical fiction! Be sure to read the author's note at the end to discover what's fact and what's fiction. Thank you to the author for allowing me to read an early copy. All opinions are my own.

Series: Even If, #2 (Canadian author)
Format: e-ARC from author (launch team)

Book #130 of 2025: Though this novel is book 2 of a series, it is a different story/focus. Each book can stand alone. Both are based on true stories from the WWII C.O.R.B. strategy of sending British children to be temporarily taken care of in Canada. In this book, it features the City of Benares ship that was torpedoed. Many, many adults and children died. One lifeboat was not located and all were presumed dead. This is the lifeboat the lead female character, Mary Cornish was on.

Mary, an accomplished pianist and music teacher, decides to serve the war effort by being a C.O.R.B. escort for children seeking safety in Canada. One of the most prominent things that stuck out to me were the radical changes she endures within a rather short period time. First she is at home with food rations, blackout curtains, etc to a luxury liner with sumptuous food with no limits. It was as though they all traveled to another dimension.

How could these ships could have such plenty when those on land were having to ration, skimp, and sometimes do without? Sadly, the answer is money talks, even in war time. Though I'm glad the guests could enjoy such things, it made me angry for all those who sacrificed and went without "for the war effort." After the torpedo, the group in lifeboat 12 were, once again, in the sudden juxtaposition of little food and water, no comforts, being vulnerable to the elements, etc.

This epistolary novel certainly pays tribute to the strength of the human spirit under very adverse conditions, especially those who have HOPE in the Lord. Mary's reliance on God to care for the children physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Her strength, bravery, and ability to do the right thing in countless, difficult moments is nothing short of incredible.

The author brings out a myriad of emotions: fear, relief, sadness, joy, horror, excitement, sympathy, and much more. One feels as though they are on the rollercoaster journey with Mary. Toward the end, I became drained imagining what those people went through. At the same time, I felt so inspired and encouraged by their dogged determination to live despite the massive odds against them. All you want is for them to be warm & dry, have lots of water to drink, be able to stretch out and sleep, relax in a long bath, eat good food, and be taken care of.

While they again get a sudden and grateful return to safety and comfort, there also are some shocking surprises. There are ruthless and invasive reporters and a few so-called "good samaritans" that simply want to be noticed for their "generous deeds." One woman actually has the gall to insist that Mary exaggerated or faked her difficulty in recovery! It reminded me a little of the nonsensical "virtue signalling" and hateful words flung around in today's world over a difference of opinion or politics. They think it's all about them and do not even bother to consider or gather facts.

I was immersed in this novel from start to finish. This is not an "easy" story but it is one that is well-done and will stick with a person. It's difficult to comprehend choosing to send your children across an ocean for safety, only to have the ugliness of war find some of them anyway. It is a decision that is hard to grasp yet how can we judge what they endured and the impossible choice they had to make? I highly recommend this book to not only fellow Canadians but for all others to learn more about this piece of world history.

Even if I Perish is told through a mix of letters and the character's perspective. It is based on the true accounts of Mary Cornish during WWII, and the CORB program that sent children from England to other countries. It is a harrowing story of loss, devastation, determination, and faith.

“Each of us has a different path to follow, but each of us can be used greatly by God when we’re willing to lay down our fragile security for the sake of others."

When Mary decides to volunteer with the CORB program, her sister Eileen tries to guilt her into not doing it. However, Mary felt called by God to do this, and a sermon about Queen Esther confirms her calling.

“When things go wrong as they often will,” he (Mr. Shakespeare) said, “remember you are British and grin and bear it.”

This story is captivating and emotional. I teared up, I got goose bumps, and I was horrified by certain events. Mary's courage and perseverance during the hardest trial of her life is encouraging and so hard to fathom. I can't imagine being in her circumstances, nor can I picture how I would handle it. I do praise God that I will not experience the exact trial that she did.

While the author took some creative liberties, she stayed true to Mary's story, and it was fascinating to read (and again, horrifying). This story is incredibly well-written, and I highly recommend it for fans of historical fiction (no romance).

Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read this book. I was not required to provide a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

“Even if I Perish” is a recounting of an actual event during WWII. The story involves a ship with children being sent to Canada from England in order to protect them from the war. It centers around one woman who went along to chaperon the children. The author Terrie Todd has gone to great lengths to keep the story as historically accurate as possible while taking some poetic license to help the story line. She has woven a captivating story of heroism, tenacity, and compassion, reminding readers of a tumultuous time in world history through a captivating story.

For anyone who loves historical books, this is a MUST READ!

I read a free ARC of this book and was under no obligation to leave a positive review.

This is my favourite book of those that Terrie has written. The author’s note at the end describing the real and fiction amazed me due to my increased understanding of the boat’s demise. Her ability to weave the fiction in amongst so many truths was tremendously well done.

Where to start? Sometimes the truth is harder to comprehend than a made up tale. I am sad to say I only found out about the CORB children with Terrie's last book and I yet again knew nothing of this piece of history.

While Terrie uses both fact and fiction in this book to tell this story it is absolutely heartbreaking and also heartwarming. You will surely shed tears as you read this, but you will also read about the goodness of God and how people can be used by Him even in the most challenging circumstances.

I highly recommend this book and think it is something that everyone needs to read. 💖

Inspirational writing at its finest!

I once again had the great pleasure of receiving an early copy of this book and began it one afternoon and finished it the next morning. To say that it was hard to put down, while true, really does not do justice to how gripping a tale this is. While I was familiar with the CORB program during WWII and I was aware that a ship carrying children to Canada had been torpedoed and sunk by a German vessel, I was completely unaware of the story of Lifeboat 12. The horrors that they all faced once the torpedo struck the ship, the chaos that ensued as the scramble was on for the lifeboats and then the incredible story of Mary Cornish and all the others in Lifeboat 12 as they floated in the midst of the Atlantic until finally being rescued on 26 September 1940 after eight days at sea all makes for a gripping story.

Our somewhat reluctant heroine, Mary Cornish, is inspired to make the journey based in part on the story of Queen Esther and her courage during a time of great peril for her Jewish people. Even as she faces the danger of appearing before King Ahasuerus unbidden, Mary who is unmarried and has never been in charge of children for extended periods of time before (even for her own niece and nephew) faces her own fears regarding her abilities. She keeps returning to the thought that perhaps like Queen Esther, she has been put in this certain time and place for just such a need. As the story unfolds, we find that she does indeed seem to have been ordained for such a time. She provides incredible care for the 6 boys, even as she fears that they may all perish as supplies, particularly water dwindles, spirits sink and bodies grow frail.

Their rescue by the HMS Anthony is remarkable as is Mary’s gradual recovery physically, mentally and emotionally as she comes to terms both with the experiences she has faced as well as her earlier fears. This is a book not to be missed!

I have always enjoyed historical fiction, and this book was no exception. I read it quickly because once I’d started, I couldn’t put it down. It is a unique blend of fact and fiction, so cleverly woven that without the helpful author’s note, I would not have been able to work out where real-life accounts ended and fiction began.

Although much has been written about evacuees during the Second World War, I did not realise children had also been sent further afield to countries like Australia and Canada, so this book provided education as well as entertainment.

I really admired the heroine and felt I endured the ordeal with her as she struggled to care for herself and her young charges in a lifeboat with no guarantee of survival. The author’s writing style drew me into the drama. My hopes soared when rescue seemed to be imminent, then sank when I realised it wasn’t.

Terrie Todd’s attention to detail was immaculate. However, she still managed to breathe life into her characters. Although this is primarily Mary’s story, I was emotionally invested in all the side-characters, especially the six young boys.

Finally, I was interested to read about Mary’s life following the rescue. I especially enjoyed the way the author travelled with her down the long path towards forgiveness. Although the press treated Mary as a heroine, she had her struggles and emotional battles to fight, and these made her an even more believable character. It would have been easy for Todd to over-romanticise her heroine, and I’m glad she did not succumb to this temptation.

I would highly recommend this book to fiction lovers and history buffs alike.

September 1940, SS City of Benares: a luxury cruise liner transports ninety British children and their adult escorts across the Atlantic toward Canada.

This is a retelling of the actual account of Mary Cornish, escort to fifteen girls destined for Canadian shores. But during their crossing, the unthinkable happens, a German U-boat torpedoes their ship and their two military escorts. This is the story of their survival at sea.

Each chapter begins with a letter, an article, or a transcribed interview of people involved with the sinking of the SS City of Benares. Relatives from England, foster families from Canada, survivors, and passengers before their demise. There's even a letter from a German soldier included. These pieces of history tell of the hope and despair of a senseless act of war. Much of the text is from first hand sources. The author created the other pieces to enhance the story (the author's note provides interesting insight to this particular element).

It's a miracle that lifeboat twelve survived over a week drifting in the Atlantic. The majority of the retelling is about their survival - the incredible conditions the children and adults on board had to deal with. Mary is considered a hero when she returns, but from her own point of view, she doesn't agree.

I recommend reading the author's note at the end of the novel, as readers are given more information as to which parts of the story are real and imagined.

The historical detail is incredible, allowing readers the ability to enter Mary's world of 1940.

I received a copy of the book as part of the book launch team. All opinions expressed are my own.

Once again, Terrie Todd presents a gripping historical fiction novel bound by belief. The sinking of the SS City of Benares, an evacuee ship, en route to Canada in 1940 with 90 children as part of the Children's Overseas Reception Board. 77 of those children were lost following an attack by a U-48 German submarine. Mary Cornish, an escort for CORB, survived in a lifeboat with six boys, a fellow escort, and 37 crew members after presumed lost.
Told from Mary's point of view, this story relies strongly on historical accuracy and faith. The book is hard to put down and the reader feels the poignant emotions of Mary and the story's characters, and how God worked in the many lives impacted through this disaster. The story instills a desire to further learn about this time in history, the story of CORB, the disaster, and the lives of those affected.
Terrie Todd once again provides the reader with an excellent account in history that shows the clear hand of God at work in those who trust Him. A definite read!!

“Is the ocean God’s bottle, filled with our tears? Is that why we mustn’t drink from it?”

Hold on to the boat, you are in for an unforgettable journey! Keep the tissues handy and be prepared to be very thirsty. This fictionalized version of the true account of the SS City of Benares and the CORB children is not only one of tragedy, but also supernatural courage and miraculous survival. Discover that hope trumps despair, light overcomes darkness, and forgiveness sets the forgiver free. Articles and letters, many of which are actual historical documents, bring realism to the ordeal of those on board and their families. Mary’s stories within the story create bright spots during the darkest and most despondent times, while her music creates a unique “soundtrack” for the book. Terrie Todd has gifted us her best work yet with realistic characters in an exceptionally told narrative. You will not be able to put it down.

Author Terrie Todd has done a fantastic job of putting in novel form the recounting of the historic event that made a 41 year old childless music teacher famous throughout Great Britain that had nothing to do with making music. Miss Mary Cornish is an unlikely hero when we're introduced to this woman whose real life experience in September 1940 is the subject of Even if I Perish. Mary takes on a potentially dangerous assignment to do what she considers her "part" to support her country when England was under nightly bombings by the Germans in World War II. When things go terribly wrong Mary shows remarkable fortitude as she struggles for survival and great compassion as she cares for others in the same dire situation. The book was so riveting that I kept reading until 4:30 in the morning - it was truly "unputdownable". I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction - or in this case - a fictionalized version of actual history during WWII. I received an ARC of the book but all opinions are my own.

Based on actual events. The City of Benares was torpedoed by a German submarine. Onboard were ninety children being evacuated from England to Canada for their safety. Seventy-seven died. Mary Cornish, one of the escorts assigned to fifteen girls, found herself in a lifeboat with six boys. They were adrift in cold, rough weather for eight days.

When applying for the position, Mary took as her motto, “For such a time as this,” the words of Queen Esther. Keeping the boys alive became her task.

One of the boys made that timeless lament, “God could have stopped that torpedo.”

“Yes,” Mary told him. “I don’t know why He didn’t. Sometimes He allows horrible things.”

She and the boys all suffered ongoing physical repercussions, nightmares, and guilt in varying amounts, but went on to live good lives. A heartbreaking story that ends on a high note.

Mordecai says to Esther in the Bible “for such a time as this” when urging her to speak up and use her position to save her people. Esther 4:14

Mary wants to do something to make a difference in WWII. But she is simply a music teacher with no children of her own. Until she hears about a program to save children from London's bombs. She is on summer break. Could this be her part of the war?

Against advice from family she decides to embark upon a journey to escort children to Canada. Once the storm hits it is evident to all that Mary is aboard the life boat “for such as time as this” even if she perishes.

This is based on true accounts and is absolutely hard to put down once you start. Once again award winner Terrie Todd has written a spell binding novel about events we rarely hear about, or even knew existed.

This book pulled me in from the very beginning. I love World War II books and have read plenty, but this is a story I had never heard before. I first learned about the CORB program in Terrie Todd’s last book, Even If I Cry. She also mentioned the SS City of Benares in that book, so I knew that a torpedo had sunk a ship carrying children, but I had no idea of the full story or the incredible bravery involved.

Terrie Todd does a fantastic job of bringing history to life. She makes you care deeply about every character and shows the courage and faith of ordinary people facing impossible situations. I cried at times while reading and was amazed that they survived. I honestly cannot imagine myself in their place.

This is a book that would make a great movie. It’s emotional, gripping, and inspiring. A must-read for anyone who enjoys World War II stories that are both powerful and heartfelt.

I received this book as an advance reader copy and am sharing my honest thoughts.

This story, based on true events of the CORB program during WWII, held my interest and kept me turning the pages to discover who would survive the terrible tragedy.
Mary is a single, childless teacher of middle age who signs up to transport British children across the Atlantic to Canada and the US. A few days into their journey, their ship is hit by German torpedoes and Mary is thrust into unimaginable circumstances of danger and trials as she and others set out in a lifeboat.
While the author took some creative liberties, she stayed true to factual information. The story is told through the eyes of Mary but also has letters and news reports woven within the story. Some are true and others are the author's creative license.

It was a story of faith, strength, bravery, kindness, and ingenuity. It was well written and I would recommend it to other fans of historical fiction.

How does one write about true stories of indomitable, unbelievable courage, resilience, commitment to one's charges, sense of duty and well, just grimly hanging on in the face of sure d@ath after being torpedoed?

This is the true story of Mary Cornish and her charges aboard the SS Benares a children's evacuee ship bound for Canada during World War Two. Torpedoed, shipwrecked, wracked by terrible thirst, cold, anxiety and worry, the only woman on the lifeboat crammed to overflowing with 46 souls, Mary does right by the children.

Her selfless care enabled their survival in a disaster where most of the children lost their lives.

Reading about such disasters and people leaves you humbled, in awe of the resilience God has built into the human spirit, doubting if you could do the same in a similar situation... Mixed feelings, yet thankful that the world holds many, unsung Mary Cornishs.

I was given an ARC to read, but the opinions are my own.

I honestly wasn't sure how I was going to like this particular book, but I enjoyed another book by this author and wanted to give this book a shot. Let me tell you, my heart has been ripped from my chest in this emotional book based off of a true story. I can't even imagine what the real people the book was based off of had to endure. I loved the strong message of faith and I thought the author did well with the creative liberties. I did have to get use to the format of the book as it was told from different viewpoints and real letters. However, that format gives readers an accurate image of what happened and the emotions from people who lived through the event. I found myself going online and researching more about the SS City of Benares and Mary Cornish.

I could not put this book down! I was sneaking and finding moments where I could read just a tiny bit more! I read this in less than 2 days.
I love that this was based on a real person and a real event. This was one of those very important moments of WWII that rarely gets talked about. I love how this stays so close to the real story.
I also loved how the author intertwines parts of Esther’s story from the Bible into this story.
I loved the protagonist in this story. I found Terrie Todd’s storytelling to be top notch. At times I felt like I was in the life boat right along with the other characters. I also loved the ending of the book- the letter to the German soldier. I felt it was a perfect ending.

This is the first book that I have read from this author and it will be the first of many more to read. Please have tissues standing by as you start this story based on actual events. This story follows Mary Cornish and what she endured on the SS City of Bernares. I hadn't heard about this event in history until I started reading this book. This book has real facts along with fiction woven in and makes for a well written story. If you enjoy reading about actual events, you will love this story. Even if you aren't into history, this story will still capture your attention and you won't want to put it down until you find out what happens. When learning of the evacuation of children from England during the war, we often think, 'that's interesting' or 'I don't think I could do that'. We know that not every ship made it to safe shores.
"Even if I Perish" tells a tale of one of those ships and some of the people who did not survive and who did survive. Terrie tells her tale so vividly you can see the ship and feel the emotions of its passengers, from joy, sadness, horror, hopelessness, hope and confusion. I especially appreciate that we learn what happens after when some are returned to home. Throughout this telling, as in real life, God prevails and with it He brings hope and peace.

This book is well worth reading. Enjoy.
PS. You might need a few tissues....I certainly did.

What a ride! Knowing this was based on a true story had me thinking it wouldn't leave room for the author 's imagination but that was a wrong assumption. Terrie did so well with weaving the facts into the detailed story, totally perserving the historical characters' true personalities. I felt that the realities of 8 days on a crowded lifeboat were well described and had my emotions on edge for their suffering.
I appreciate the "Author's Note" at the end that sorts out the documented details of this event from 85 years ago and where her imagination filled in. I highly recommend this book. Thank you, Terrie!

Award winning author, Terrie Todd, has written an absorbing story based on the horrific plight of children and their chaperones surviving a torpedo attack on their ship and spending perilous days at sea in a life boat. Based on historic accounts, Todd weaves a tale that is hard to put down. This heart-rending yet uplifting account is the second in a series telling of the children sent to live with strangers in foreign countries in order to get them out of harm's way in heavily bombarded England. It is well worth reading.

Even If I Perish is excellent WWII historical fiction recounting the true story of Mary Cornish, a volunteer with the CORB program that sent children from England to safety with host families in other countries. Terrie Todd does a masterful job of weaving interesting, well researched facts into a heartachingly beautiful, emotional work of fiction retelling the torpedoing of the SS City of Bernares filled with 90 CORB children and many volunteer sponsors. The story line is well-written, captivating and truly hard to put down. If you enjoy historical fiction this is a must read.

This is the second book in Terrie Todd’s Even If series. It’s a story about children who were on their way to Canada as part of the CORB program. She made history come to life for me.
I appreciated the follow-up she did with the characters as they returned to “normal” life and the mental health struggles that this experience brought. Terrie painted an accurate picture of what they possibly would have gone through.

Entertaining, heart wrenching at times, soul searching throughout, definitely a book I can, without hesitation, rate 5⭐️, wishing a higher rating was available!

Even If I Perish, the newest novel by Terrie Todd, explores the British child evacuee program to Canada during World War II from the perspective of a female escort and others on her ill-fated ship. Through a combination of primary source materials and narrative, Todd brings Mary Cornish and her perilous journey to life. I could not turn the pages quickly enough to find out how Mary and others would survive.
Even If I Perish is perfect for readers who enjoy historical fiction that incorporates a Christian message and other novels by Terrie Todd. Also, the story provides the opportunity to experience Queen Esther’s famous words in a new way. Thank you to the author and the publisher for my review copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.

This latest book by author Terrie Todd is her best work yet. Combining fact with fiction, Terrie takes the reader on a journey back in time to relive a tragedy in history. Drawing on her strength for historical details, she weaves together a story that will have you crying, cheering and marvelling at the strength of the human spirit. I was pleased to be able to read a free ARC of this book and was not obligated in any way to post a positive review.
