Life Lessons is a heartfelt and uplifting collection of reflections drawn from Bob Violino’s remarkable journey through life. A veteran journalist and survivor, Bob shares the wisdom he discovered while facing life-threatening experiences, including a near-fatal cardiac arrest and chronic kidney disease. Each chapter reveals how gratitude, resilience, and presence can transform even the most difficult moments into opportunities for growth and purpose. This book is not just about overcoming adversity; it is about finding joy and meaning through it.
What I found most striking was the honesty and warmth in Bob’s writing. Rather than simply recounting his hardships, he invites readers to walk beside him and discover the lessons within his experiences. His voice feels genuine and reassuring, and his insights are both relatable and practical. I particularly appreciated his focus on small yet powerful changes. Learning to quiet negative thoughts, noticing everyday blessings, and embracing life with an open heart. The blend of personal stories and thoughtful reflections makes the book deeply engaging and easy to connect with.
Life Lessons goes beyond inspiration; it serves as a gentle guide to building resilience and positivity. Readers facing challenges will find comfort in Bob’s journey and motivation in his outlook. The book reminds us that even in times of hardship, we have the power to shape our experiences with gratitude and compassion. Whether you are searching for hope, strength, or a renewed sense of purpose, this book will leave you feeling encouraged, grounded, and ready to embrace life with optimism.
This book packs a lot of punch on common sense ways to appreciate the life you’ve been given, turn lemons into lemonade, and move forward to embrace a better future. I found this book on NetGalley (thank you NetGalley and VBC Books for allowing me to read this book) as I was looking for a self-help book for a book challenge.
Having a social work background, I’m fairly skeptical of most self-help books but I was pleasantly wowed! away by this simple but eloquent examination of how to make your life better. The author uses examples from his life and others to instruct us on many givens we ignore all the time: gratitude, positivity, patience, humility and others. These “givens” once recognized open us up to accepting more into our lives. The author also offers examples, mottos, and things we can do to inculcate these characteristics into our life. I particularly liked his examination of the difference between joy and happiness.
I really think this a perfect book for anyone as they start out the new year to use to examine what they want to achieve that year - this is the time of New Year’s resolutions. This would certainly give more teeth to the resolution. For myself as I started the book and read of the author having to face possible amputation of his foot, I examined my peevishness earlier in the day when at PT working on my recovery from knee surgery. What I realized was while I was grateful I was not appreciative enough - this is an example of how this book gave me insight. I will definitely be reading this book again.
Looking for a self help book, this is one I highly recommend.
Bob Violino's insights and lessons learned over the years as he weathered a series of serious health episodes may provide some support if not guidance to those looking for inspiration or just a nudge in a positive direction. (Note, Bob is a former colleague and I was provided an advance reader copy of the book.)
Life Lessons by Bob Violino is one of those rare books that truly touch your heart and leave a lasting impact on how you view your own life. From the very first chapter, I could feel the honesty and warmth in Bob’s writing. This isn’t just another self-help book filled with clichés, it’s a deeply personal and authentic reflection on what it means to persevere, to find gratitude in the hardest moments, and to truly live with purpose.
What makes this book stand out is Bob’s genuine storytelling. He doesn’t just talk about resilience he’s lived it. Reading about his journey through a near-fatal cardiac arrest and kidney disease made me pause and reflect on my own challenges in a new light. Instead of feeling weighed down, I found myself feeling uplifted and inspired to approach each day with gratitude.
Every chapter offers practical, down-to-earth wisdom that’s easy to relate to. Bob doesn’t preach he shares. His lessons on embracing positivity, finding joy in small things, and breaking free from negative thought patterns are both powerful and comforting. It feels like having a wise, compassionate friend sitting beside you, guiding you through life’s ups and downs.
By the time I finished the last page, I felt a renewed sense of hope and peace. Life Lessons reminded me that even in our darkest moments, there’s beauty, strength, and purpose waiting to be discovered.
If you’ve ever faced hardship, loss, or uncertainty and let’s be honest, who hasn’t? this book is an absolute must-read. It will inspire you, comfort you, and help you rediscover the joy in simply being alive.
Beautifully written, deeply human, and profoundly uplifting. A book I’ll be returning to again and again!

Each chapter highlights the lessons hidden in both extraordinary and everyday moments, encouraging readers to embrace gratitude, live in the present, and discover resilience. What stood out to me most was the book’s honesty and warmth. Bob does not simply recount his struggles; he invites the reader to walk alongside him and learn from them. His storytelling feels genuine, and the lessons he shares are practical enough to be applied in daily life. I especially appreciated how he emphasized small but powerful shifts, such as breaking free from negative thinking and finding joy in ordinary moments. The mix of personal anecdotes with thoughtful reflections makes the book both engaging and relatable.
Life Lessons offers more than encouragement—it provides a roadmap for cultivating resilience and positivity. Readers who feel weighed down by life’s difficulties will find comfort in Bob’s journey and inspiration in his perspective. The book reminds us that challenges can shape us into stronger, more compassionate individuals if we choose to embrace them with gratitude. Reading “Life Lessons,” during this frigid winter, I’ve been grateful for the warmth of Bob Violino’s heartfelt messages that cover a wide spectrum of life’s experiences. I’ve read a number of books embracing gratitude and positivity as important ingredients to healthy longevity, but Bob’s book is striking not only for its observations and advice, but for its welcome authenticity. A long-time technology and business writer, Bob is a polished, professional writer. At the same time, his stories are deeply personal; he never shies away from difficult and emotional challenges, like his life-threatening struggles with kidney disease and his sudden cardiac arrest, which left him clinically dead for ten minutes. He covers a variety of well-travelled topics, weaving philosophical takes with ordinary human experiences: being present in the moment; breaking free from negative thought patterns; finding joy in the ordinary; and refusing to let setbacks define your story. His advice is incisive, practical and well-researched—but always, accessible, humble, never with a hint of preachiness. You feel as if you’re sitting down over coffee, relaxed and thoughtful, as Bob shares engaging stories of his life. He finishes the last of his 25 short chapters with a discussion about love—specifically, what’s known as agape love, “the selfless, unconditional acts that are the purest expressions of caring for others.” Ultimately, I came away feeling that “Life Lessons” was not just about lessons learned, but a reflection of love and hope for humanity, of Bob’s own selfless caring for others.
Life Lessons is a heartfelt and inspiring reflection on resilience, gratitude, and finding meaning through life’s most difficult moments. Drawing from personal experiences, the author delivers a message that feels genuine, grounded, and relatable. What stood out most to me was the authenticity behind the writing. The lessons shared don’t feel theoretical they come from real challenges and lived experiences, which makes them more impactful. The author’s journey through serious health struggles adds depth and gives weight to the message of perseverance and positivity. The book also does a great job of keeping its ideas practical and accessible. Themes like gratitude, living in the present, and letting go of negativity are presented in a way that feels achievable rather than overwhelming. It encourages reflection without feeling overly complicated. I appreciated the tone as well it’s warm, thoughtful, and at times even uplifting without being unrealistic. There’s a sense of balance between acknowledging hardship and focusing on growth, which makes the book both comforting and motivating. Overall, this is a meaningful read for anyone looking for perspective, encouragement, or a reminder to slow down and appreciate life. It’s especially valuable for readers going through challenges or those interested in personal growth and self-reflection.
During my long professional career, I was very familiar with Bob Violino‘s excellent writing about information technology. Two years ago I came across Bob’s excellent blog (inspirations-blog.com). In his blog, Bob writes candidly about the serious health challenges he has faced and how he dealt with them. I subscribed immediately and have followed his posts ever since, inspired not only by his courage but by the generosity with which he shared the lessons learned along the way.
Now Bob has gathered those life lessons into a powerful, accessible book. It’s a work that anyone who has faced personal trials can connect with, take comfort in, and learn from. Even after regularly reading his blog, I found the book to be fresh, inspiring, and profoundly enlightening.
I recommend it wholeheartedly—and I invite you to discover, as I have, the strength, wisdom, and hope in Bob’s story.
Life Lessons is one of those rare books that feels like sitting down with someone who’s truly lived and is willing to share everything they’ve learned with honesty and heart. Bob Violino’s story is both humbling and inspiring. From surviving a cardiac arrest to facing kidney disease, he turns moments of pain into powerful reflections on gratitude, resilience, and finding joy even in struggle.
What I really loved is how genuine the writing feels not preachy, not overly polished, just real wisdom from someone who’s been through it. The lessons are simple yet profound, and I found myself pausing often to reflect on my own life.
It’s the kind of book that leaves you feeling lighter, more grounded, and grateful. A beautiful reminder that even in our hardest moments, there’s always something to learn and something to be thankful for.
Even though I have heard some of these lessons before and read some of the underlying research, I like that the author weaves his personal story throughout and pulls all of this together in one book. I liked the chapter "Look for Joy" because are brains are wired to look for the negative and it is easy to go into a spiral of negative thinking if we don't create anchors to optimism. I also liked his suggestion to look back at old photos (including the box of photo albums from way before digital cameras). He lists movies to watch, books to read, and songs to listen to which I also appreciate (made a playlist from his song list!) He also has hyperlinks to other articles and research he mentioned in the book which I also appreciate! This book would make a great gift for loved ones.
Thank you to Netgalley and VBC Books for an ARC and I voluntarily left this review.

I haven’t finished Life Lessons yet, but I wanted to share a quick impression.
I bought the Kindle version on Amazon and have been reading it in short sessions. What stands out is the tone: it’s honest and grounded, not “forced positivity.” Because Bob writes from real experience with serious health setbacks, the themes of gratitude, patience, and being present feel earned, not preached.
The chapters are practical and easy to digest, and I’ve already found myself pausing to reread a few lines that hit home.
