Sheetal Kolvalkar's psychological romance thriller, "Love…Bites: Love doesn't just hurt…it bites," explores the dark aspects of love, obsession, and betrayal. At its heart is Anvi Rai, a forty-year-old corporate powerhouse whose strength, independence, and fierce determination shine through on every page. Her determination to bring Ved, the man attempting to trap her, to justice is the story's driving force, and it makes her a heroine to root for.
The novel stands out for its character development. Tanya, Anvi's loyal friend, goes to great lengths to protect her mentor, and Inspector Raghav is a commanding figure who defies expectations with his intelligence and integrity. His investigations into other domestic violence cases add weight and relevance, giving voice to victims who are frequently silenced. These complex, flawed, and deeply human characters are what make the book memorable. While the author's writing style, which draws inspiration from her experience as a screenwriter, makes the story read like a movie playing out in front of you, the tension is maintained by Ved and Anvi's battle of wits. With a sense of justice being served, the conclusion gives readers much-needed satisfaction.
The book does have some shortcomings, though. The abrupt change from first to third person in the story can be unnerving. There are also spelling and grammar mistakes in the text, and some of the twists are obvious because of early clues.
"Love…Bites" has a strong emotional impact despite being a debut. You'll be captivated, unnerved, and thinking about it long after you've put it down.
