One portal, two worlds, a whole lot of music, adventure, and maybe… even love.

Aiden has always felt off-key. Born the day the world split into two—one male, one female—he’s spent his life chasing a music career in a society where AI floods the airwaves, and human talent is seen as overpriced and obsolete. Now thirty, with stardom slipping through his fingers and loneliness setting in, Aiden’s ready to give up. Until he stumbles upon a portal to the other world—where human music thrives—and meets someone who might be the key to everything he’s lost.

Joana is a robotics whiz stuck in a loop. She once dreamed of building the future, but these days she’s more into fried foods than breakthroughs. When her former crush, an adorned pop star, ropes her into a gig, old ambitions and feelings reignite, just in time for a peculiar stranger to enter her life, striking a chord she thought was long gone.

As their worlds collide in a lighthearted adventure of music, discovery, and unexpected connections, Aiden
and Joana have one shot to restore harmony before the portal disappears, taking with it their dreams, their
hope, and their chance at love.

First, I’d like to thank NetGalley and author Sirus Simons for providing me with an eARC of this book in exchange for my honest review! I genuinely had such a great time reading this story. There were several moments that made me laugh out loud. The writing style was easy to follow which was exactly what I needed after a long day at work.

I also found the concept refreshing; two worlds in which men and women are forced to live separately, and two protagonists each driven by their own mission. The story is filled with heartwarming moments, mysteries and the occasional bit of awkwardness that makes the characters feel VERY human (*cough* Aiden *cough*)

I have to admit, I found Aiden quite selfish for a large part of the book but honestly, who can blame him? He’s discovering possibilities in a world that until recently was completely unknown to him. Joana, on the other hand, was extremely relatable with her inner struggles, strong sense of responsibility and resilience.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read that kept me hooked from start to finish. I’m already curious to see what Sirus Simons will come up with next!

Sirus Simons’ Harmonies Apart is one of those Dystopian stories that isn't too far out there. Readers who don’t typically read this genre will still be able to connect with the storyline. It’s only 30 years into the future, with an MMC who is a struggling musician and an FMC who is a “techy”. The author has delivered a creative story that draws on many contemporary mainstream themes and topics.

Every scene was highly detailed, offering great visuals. The idea of the world being split into two is interesting. I found myself wondering how the story of the two portals would unfold. The dialogue is relatively light-hearted; nothing is heavily dark. The romance is a slow burn and is sweet between the two characters as well.

Thank you to Author Sirus Simons for the gifted e-copy. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

My generation grew up with The Lake House and The Island – two completely different films but with one thing in common: the future.

⁉️ What would happen if, from one moment to the next, the opposite sex disappeared from the face of the earth?

For thirty years, Aiden Hardwell and Joana Blake have experienced the peculiar reality of living in two parallel worlds that are so different yet so similar. Despite three decades having passed, the question remains: what happened to the opposite sex in their lives? Why did this happen?
Well, despite the uncertainty, life goes on. Aiden and Joana conclude that a change is needed — a completely unplanned one: the key to this whole mystery lies in the town of Silvervale!

The more we delve into history, the more we realise that society and technological innovation have always been closely linked to the needs of individuals. While the transition is seen as natural, arts with roots stretching back thousands of years are being swept away by humanoid robots and AI.
This spontaneous encounter between the two individuals confirms that there is still hope of putting things right. However, they will also learn that some people enjoy living a life dominated solely by one sex, as a way of exerting power over the weak and uninformed.

The development of the two MCs is also quite apt: one seeks art and the beauty of living in the present, while the other is focused on answers and how actions will impact the future.
But it seems the adventure does not end here! I am now curious to see how things will unfold after the revelations made by both sides.

Harmonies Apart is a sci fi fantasy rom com set thirty years in the future where AI has overtaken everything and the world has split into two. One all male and one all female. The history of that divide is called the Great Disappearance in the male world and the Departure in the female one, and it has left families broken, loved ones missing, and technology evolving in completely different ways.

Aiden wants fame and music is his whole personality, but in the all male world nobody cares since AI music is cheap and human music requires people to actually pay for it. Joanna is a bio female who once loved robotics but now seems more passionate about fries and comfort. One night a very drunk Aiden accidentally slips into the all female world and suddenly discovers that human music is still alive and wanted. He sees his chance and wants to cling to it, while also chasing Joanna who helps him settle into this new reality.

The concept of two worlds trying to coexist pulled me in and I loved Joanna’s evolution and determination to bring harmony back. She deserves someone who fully believes in her. Aiden felt annoying and selfish at times and he kept doubting her right till the end which frustrated me. The world building was okayish and sometimes dragged to the point I almost gave up, but the emotional touches, the banter, and the subtle humor kept me going. I would love to see more of Joanna because she truly carried this story for me.

Harmonies Apart is one of those books that I wanted to love completely—and while it didn’t fully get there for me, it still left an impression. Sirus Simons has such a delicate, emotional writing style; there are passages that genuinely took my breath away. There were other moments that made me laugh out loud. The themes of distance, identity, and connection were beautifully woven, and the main character’s inner conflict felt deeply real.

That said, the pacing felt uneven in parts—some sections hit with raw intensity, while others dragged enough that I had to push myself to keep going. I also found myself wishing for a bit more clarity in certain relationships or motivations; it sometimes felt like the emotional threads didn’t quite tie together. Despite all of that, I really appreciate the uniqueness of this book! The premise felt super original and unlike anything else I’ve read!

When the book works, it really works. The lyrical prose, the bittersweet tone, and those quiet, reflective moments make it worth reading. It’s a story that hums softly rather than roars—imperfect, yes, but still resonant in its own way.

Overall, I enjoyed this, and I’ll definitely be recommending it to people on release day!

Thank you NetGalley and Sirus Simons for this eARC!

I absolutely loved this! This was such a cute little read. The idea of the parallel worlds was so fun and I loved how goofy and awkwardly adorable Aiden was in his quest to woo Joana. I thought the way they each integrated into each other’s worlds was really interesting and it was so funny to see them adjusting to slang and fashion and technology across the worlds. The way all of the characters ended up coming together to help try to fix the worlds was amazing and I loved seeing how some of them were connected in really significant ways. The ending was such a cliffhanger but I definitely look forward to seeing what’s next in this universe.

Thank you Siri’s for reaching out and allowing me to read this arc

This book sings with emotion. From the first page, I was completely hooked — the chemistry, the heartbreak, the music that ties it all together. It’s a story about chasing dreams, losing yourself, and finding your way back through the people (and songs) that matter most.

Sirius Simons captures the push and pull of love and ambition so perfectly — the ache of what could’ve been, and the hope of what still might be. Raw, passionate, and beautifully written — Harmonies Apart hits every note just right.

I loved this book.

Harmonies Apart is a fun, imaginative dystopian story set across two parallel worlds—one for bio males and one for bio females—each with completely different values, aesthetics, and ways of living.

Aiden is a goofy, dorky dreamer chasing music in a world that no longer values it, and Joana is incredibly relatable—smart, skeptical, and just trying to exist without fixing what doesn’t feel broken. Watching their worlds (and perspectives) collide was equal parts hilarious, adventurous, and heartfelt.

The characters felt real despite the dystopian setting, and the story never took itself too seriously in the best way. I went in expecting something fun and left genuinely charmed.

This book is lighthearted, creative, and full of heart—and it absolutely deserves more reads.

The premise here is intriguing: thirty years ago, reality split into two—one world of only females, the other of only males. In this setting we meet Aiden, a man chasing love and dreaming of fame as a singer in a society that treats human talent as obsolete. Joana, meanwhile, is a robotics whiz who has lost hope. When Aiden stumbles through a portal into the female world, will he finally find what he’s been searching for? And will Joana ever get up off the couch?
I wanted to love this story, but it wasn’t quite what I expected. It wasn’t bad—there were cute moments, and Aiden’s character captivated me. Joana, however, felt odd: she only eats potatoes (usually fried), rarely bathes, yet somehow all the guys want her. Add in a string of coincidences and side characters who appear only because the plot demands it, and the result left me more puzzled than satisfied.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I’m leaving this review voluntarily.

I got to read an early copy of this book and thoroughly enjoyed it! Joana was an awesome FMC and I was invested in her story from start to finish. It took some time for Aiden to grown on me, but he did!! A lovely sci fi novel overall with twists and turns.

I received this book as an ARC. Thanks for letting me read it.

So, this book is kinda goofy.

And I mean that in a good way.

I was drawn to this book for some chill sci-fi 30s something fun. And that’s what exactly what this book is.

My overall critisism is that the writing is just kind of… mid. It’s not bad! But it’s also not… very engaging. I feel like, oveall, this book could have benefited from some line editing, so that the awkward parts could be pulled up to match some of the more well-written parts of the book. It feels like the author simply sometimes stumbles into good writing by vibes and osmosis, but doesn’t really know why it’s good or not.

And example of a very awkward passage:
Then she continued on her way, but the strong scents of the tea house still stuck to her. To air it all out, she whipped her unruly hair forward and back, and side to side. Then she inserted her fingers through the roots of her hair and vigorously shook out as many tangled strands as she could. When the stubbonness of a certain tangle caused her fingers to yank her head sideways, she gave up.

This is a lot of nothing to say, “She forgot to brush her hair, so tried to brush it out with her fingers, but gave up when she realized it was pointless.”

The author described the characters a little too much for my taste, describing again and again that Joana’s hair is brown and unkempt and has brown eyes.

As far as plot and characterization go, my criticisms are minimal. If this was a more serious sci-fi, I probably might say that things feel a little too convienent. But for the genre, being a cozy read, cinvenience is actually okay.

I liked the world(s). The concept of the male and female world splitting is fun, and I like how the author handled it and the, y’know, gender of it all. I can totally see that in both worlds, there would be an emphasis on trans people, filling the void of the missing sex. As a non-binary person, I rather liked the world and didn’t much mind the new gender concepts the author invented for the story.

The author is actually quite good at characterization, or making each character voice unique, especially comparing Joana to Aiden. I can’t say I really connected with any character, but I liked them well enough for who they were.

The thing that bugged me the most about the characters was Joana’s fries thing. It’s set up that she’s so quirky because she likes fries? As if… everyone doesn’t like fries? It was also kind of annoying how Joana is described as this lazy, couch-potato character, who has food stuck to her clothes and forgets to brush her hair and is constantly eating fried food. But instead of being, idk, stinky or unkempt or even overweight, she’s effortlessly beautiful all the time and all the boys want her. Is she on future ozempic or something? idk I would have killed for a chubby and maybe even “ugly” Joana where the people still fell in love with her regardless.

Overall I do recommend it if the premise sounds interesting. It has a very serious premise (humans are going extinct because the two worlds pulled apart, and the characters in the story are uniquely qualified to reunite the world and thus save humanity), but it doesn’t take itself too seriously. I’m sure there are more “serious” books out there about humans going extinct, but if you’d like to have fun with the premise and not have to feel anxiety all the time, this is a great choice.

I had the privilege of reading an early draft of this charming sci-fi romance. It hit all the right notes for me - fascinating sci fi concepts, two protagonists to root for, and fun little mysteries and plot twists along the way. It does have embedded in it a very liberal stance on gender, so be warned if that's something you're not into. But for the rest of us, it's an enjoyable ride.
