DREAM's Nightmare #2

Where Nightmare Meets Resistance

The Fate of DREAM Hangs By A Thread.
And Its Nightmare Has Just Begun.

Fear and chaos spread like wildfire through DREAM as Vice President Randy McGregor transforms into a smooth-talking, conniving dictator. Through the use of the new mysterious, mind-controlling Cognivasive conjierum, he is building an army and seizing control.

Graham Garnett finds himself held hostage by the Cognivasive conjierum. While the majority of those injected are swiftly overtaken, Graham has been given a fighting chance to overcome it and wield its abilities. That is, if he can prove himself worthy.

Meanwhile, the fight against the new authoritarian regime rages with Dune's Biotects battling on the front lines and Maya Varma struggling to mobilize other conjierum users to action. The leaders' goals align, but their methodologies for achieving them don't. In the middle of it all, Veronica Taveras searches for the two people she believes can help tip the Graham Garnett and Erica Towson. With allies new and old, she'll risk everything to wake DREAM from its darkest nightmare.

A gripping read from start to finnish

When Nightmare Meets Resistance by Adam Fincke is a fantastic read that pulls you in and keeps you engaged. The story has a great balance of suspense, emotion, and intensity, with characters that feel believable and a plot that keeps you wanting to know what happens next.

Fincke does an excellent job creating an atmosphere where the tension continues to build, while still giving the story plenty of heart. I found myself invested in the characters and genuinely looking forward to seeing how everything unfolded.

I got a little emotional at the end, but am hoping for a third book!

If you enjoy stories that combine darkness, determination, and the strength to push through adversity, this is definitely worth picking up. A memorable and thoroughly enjoyable book that deserves five stars!

Adam…you have not finished writing Book 3 yet, so WHAT am I supposed to do with that ending?!

Where Nightmare Meets Resistance picks up right where the first book left off, which I absolutely loved. We jump right back into the story, but this time there are new places, new monsters, new conjerium, and of course…tests. The tests were easily one of my favorite parts of this book. Every one kept me on my toes and made me want to see what these characters were going to be thrown into next.

And GRAHAM. His character development was probably my favorite part of the entire book. I liked him before, but watching him face each new test and slowly become this more confident version of himself had me sitting there like…okay, Graham, I see you! 😂

There were also characters I wasn’t completely sold on before, especially Veronica, who really grew on me throughout this book. Her scenes were a little slower for me at first because I hadn’t connected with her as much, but that changed pretty quickly as the story picked up.

But Tests 4…and some…

I happened to read this book at a time when I really needed its message. Those parts about fighting other people, fighting yourself, realizing you have it in you to overcome what is thrown at you, and carrying on anyway genuinely got to me. It almost felt like Adam was sitting there having a heart-to-heart with me through his book. Sometimes you just happen to read the right story at exactly the right time, and this was one of those moments for me.

That’s something Adam does incredibly well. His characters feel like a family. They have their own little quirks, and somehow he’ll have you laughing in the middle of scenes where you probably shouldn’t be laughing at all.

And that entire sequence with saving Graham and then him driving the boat?! I could picture EVERYTHING. I was on the edge of my chair watching it play out in my head.

Then Adam basically left me there in the water and said, “Okay, that’s all you get. Wait until I finish Book 3.”

RUDE. 😂

Five stars. Now go write Book 3.

The battle continues

After the first installment ended on a cliffhanger, the second book starts right where we left off, immediately throwing the reader back into the chaos and tension of the story.

This sequel carries a noticeably different vibe, splitting the narrative into two major plotlines. One follows Veronica and her allies as they attempt to survive Randy’s occupation while desperately searching for their missing friends. The second centers on Graham, who becomes subjected to a new form of conjierum and spends much of the story in Lucidity—a place that ultimately represents his own mind.

Graham’s storyline easily became the central highlight for me. Through a series of psychological and emotional trials, he is forced to fight against the effects of conjierum and resist becoming one of Randy’s obedient puppets. His internal struggle and personal growth give the story much of its emotional weight and depth. While the book continues expanding the dystopian world and resistance narrative, it is Graham’s journey that truly drives the story forward.

Overall, this is a solid sequel that clearly sets the stage for a much larger final confrontation. The stakes continue to rise, the atmosphere remains tense, and the character development—particularly Graham’s—is compelling enough to keep me invested. I will definitely be waiting for the next book.

Purchased Part I and Part II at the same time (and thank goodness I did!). I read *BOTH* in less than a day. I honestly didn't want to put them down. I liked all the characters, even the more "rough around the edges" ones. It's definitely sci-fi, definitely has a "divergent series" feel to it, and has a core cast you definitely want to get behind. The second book elevates the literary aspect of things by shifting gears from strictly narration to communiques, dream sequences (which are all allegory) and the familiar narrative cadence of Part I.

There will be a Part III, and I, for one, can't wait to get on the pre-sale list. Give this one a go, you won't be disappointed. It's a fun read!

Another hit!

I really couldn't put this down. I needed to find out what happened next. I just pray we get to find out what happened to Paxton. It's eating at me. Those trials really have you reflecting on your own experiences. So excited for book 3! P.S. if you don't like centipedes, just prep for one chapter
