Damned If I Do, Adam If I Don't

Their friendship began as all the best ones with her turning him down, cold.

Ten years later, Chloe Khoury-Klein knows she made the right decision. Her relationships may never last, but her friendship with Adam Sinclair has stood the test of time.

They’ve been the constants in one another’s lives - through new love and heartache, abandoned degrees and start up businesses, new cities and new tattoos, and an enduring argument about whether shortbread is disgusting or delectable.

It’s safe to say Adam would do pretty much anything for Chloe. Even rustling up money at the expense of his whisky distillery. And it’s equally safe to say that, even if he organised an elaborate trip for the express purpose of convincing her to accept his help, Chloe is not interested in compromising their friendship with a huge cash loan.

In fact, Chloe is loath to accept anyone’s financial help. That’s why, in the entire decade Adam has known her, she’s never once considered getting married to access her sizeable trust.

Until now.

Annie Cameron is the pen name of Rachel Singer, chosen for the joy of having an alias rather than any significant reason. She lives in Melbourne with two cats, two daughters and a husband who was frustratingly direct and sincere during their courtship, robbing her of any dramatic angst.

She writes Melbourne-based romcoms with low stakes, high feelings and the perfect blend of laughs and steam.

No armadillos were harmed during the making of this book.

Damned If I Do, Adam If I Don’t is the third instalment in Annie Cameron ’s Ironheart (not iron lung!) series, and it’s another banger… no pun intended.

While reading this book I laughed, I yelled at the main characters, I aw-ed out loud, and then I yelled at the main characters some more. As has become her hallmark, Annie manages to get you relating to the characters and drawing you into their stories and conflicts—even if you don’t see or approach the world in remotely the same way they do. Even if you think the characters are dumb sometimes.

Annie takes us on a journey with Chloe and Adam’s romp through small-town Victoria, alongside a dual traverse through their pasts, all while they try to make something of their lives as up-and-coming adults, wrangle their fake fake relationship, and keep up their fake fake marriage. All the while, life is constantly throwing rocks at them.

If you’ve enjoyed the first and/or second books in this series, you’ll love the third. It’s more of what you love: her humour (see: Armadillo), her rollercoasters of emotion, her subtle way of drawing you into the lives of these people living on the page. But it’s also a unique journey, with its own quirky lovability, and even more quirky, lovable (if at times frustrating) characters. At the end of each of her books, I find myself more invested in the Ironheart universe and impatiently waiting for the next instalment.

Annie is becoming a true artist in the romance series world, and a force to be reckoned with. If you haven’t discovered her or her universe yet—what are you waiting for?

I can’t. Truly, I just can’t. Every time I think she’s written her best book, she proves me wrong by making the next one even better!

This is the perfect example of a friends-to-lovers story, and honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever read a better one.

Adam and Chloe have been best friends for ten years. They’ve supported each other through every high and low, and they’ve always been the most important person in each other’s lives. Even though there was always a little bit of attraction, neither of them wanted to risk losing what they had… until they finally had to admit that they were it for each other.

I loved this book so much. Their character development was written beautifully, you can really see how much they grew up, how they lifted each other up, and how they both changed in the best ways.

This is truly one of the best love stories I’ve ever read.

One of my favorite quotes was:

“If there’s just passion then it’s lust. And if there’s intimacy and commitment without the passion, that’s more like friendship.”

And when you have both? That’s the recipe for a love that lasts a lifetime!

With every new book, I fall more in love with this series. I can’t recommend this one enough! ^-^

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Damned If I Do, Adam If I Don’t quietly wrecked me in the best way.

This is one of those books that doesn’t rely on big drama to hit hard — it slips under your skin instead. Annie Cameron captures that messy, aching space between loving someone and knowing that love alone isn’t always enough. The story feels intimate, almost like you’re eavesdropping on thoughts that were never meant to be shared.

What I loved most was how real everything felt. The characters aren’t polished or perfect — they hesitate, second-guess, and make choices that feel painfully human. Adam, especially, isn’t written to be idealised, and that honesty makes the emotional weight land so much harder. You can feel the tension in every almost-moment, every thing left unsaid.

The writing itself is soft but sharp — poetic without trying too hard, emotional without tipping into melodrama. It’s the kind of book you read slowly, not because it’s difficult, but because you don’t want to rush past the feelings it stirs up.

If you enjoy quiet, emotionally driven stories about love, timing, and the choices that haunt us, this one is absolutely worth picking up. I finished it with that hollow, thoughtful feeling that lingers long after the last page — and honestly, those are my favourite kinds of reads.

I've been so curious to understand Chloe's and Adam's story and dynamics. So happy I finally got to. First of all, this was spicier than I expected, but not gonna lie, I loved it!

That being said, I'm not really a fan of jumping back and forth in time, but it really helped us better understand them in a timeline between their 10 year friendship and their current romance development.

However, I didn't like how rushed it felt at times, especially after they got together, we just got glimpses of them :( Plus, I didn't enjoy the timeline intertwining with the previous book. I felt like it didn't make much sense, and that ending scene should have happened another day, maybe.

Also, I really hate the reason for the "third act breakup", but, to be fair, I usually do. I just think we could have gotten to the end — given how it gets resolved — in another way, without the drama. I do understand that it plays with their personalities and their relationship, though.

SPEAKING OF THEM, THEY ARE SO CUTE AND SO PERFECT TOGETHER. HOW COULD THEY HAVE TAKEN SO LONGGGGGGG? I WAS SO FRUSTRATED AT TIMES WITH THOSE TWO!

This is why I gave it 3.75 stars (3.5 on pagebound and 4 on goodreads because those are the only options there). Lovely book, it was a fun read. Can't wait for the next in the series!

Thanks, BookSirens! Packed with humor, heart, and romantic tension, this installment delivers an entertaining and satisfying continuation of the series. I very much liked Chloe and Adam's story! With time, feelings grow, and these friends' could not escape such destiny. This is one of the tropes I like the most. It is, also, a very difficult one, because knowing the other so well, one cannot help but doubt if throwing the relationship through the window only to give a chance to love... but doing so was the best decision for Chloe and Adam. They were perfect for each other.

This is pure rom-com magic! Packed with humour, emotion, a touch of nostalgia (we love a journey through the past!), and just enough delicious frustration to remind me exactly why friends-to-lovers will always own me.
