Rate this book
In a world where resilience shines through adversity, " Overcoming Cerebral Palsy, Abandonment, and Poverty" offers a moving portrait of a life lived against the odds. Written by a retired radiologist who unexpectedly discovered the power of storytelling, this book chronicles the extraordinary experiences of Buddy, a man with Cerebral Palsy who has defied societal expectations and personal challenges.

The narrative begins on a seemingly ordinary summer bike ride, where Buddy’s remarkable spirit first captured the attention of his fellow cyclists. Despite facing the trials of abandonment and poverty, Buddy's polite demeanor and thoughtful presence soon revealed the depth of his journey. As conversations around the picnic table echoed the desire to share his story, a reluctant author was born. With contributions from friends who painted the backdrop of his life, this book is not just a biography; it's a testament to the human spirit’s ability to overcome.

This book is a bit different, it's told through interviews and what the author learned from Buddy in his own words.

From this book I learned about the disease and about someone who persisted towards a seemingly impossible goal.

It is truly inspiring to read such a story especially in a world which seems to be mired in far too much darkness. It was particularly meaningful to me to learn that the path was anything but a straight line to success, but instead a very jagged line of successes and failures, and a long road to self realization.

How much does someone have to touch your life and affect you to have you write about them? That is something I always think about in reads like this. Jim Roelofs proves that Buddy's story and the way he affected his life really mattered, and we are so lucky he shared that with us.

What I loved most was how raw and honest it is. We hear in Buddy's own point of view about his life and how it all unfolded. His outlook on life will inspire anyone.

Throughout it all and the words of Buddy, Roelof's voice is steady and humbling.

It's written in a different way as Jim Roelofs is analyzing moments of Buddy's personal life and health journey while also sharing hope.

The author, even though he was a doctor and could use terms the average person doesn't understand, he uses clear language.

This biography paints a realistic picture of the obstacles faced and perseverance.

Buddy is one of those once in a lifetime kind of people. His kindness, intelligence, work ethic and willingness to help set him apart from everyone else. I don't think I could've had that kind of childhood and grown up to be such a well-adjusted adult with such an incredible outlook like Buddy. Thanks so much to Kim Roelofs for sharing his story, and sending me a copy of the book!

Buddy’s story is a heartwarming recount of overcoming challenges and excelling in life. The well crafted “report” instills empathy, joy, and triumph with only a sprinkling of sadness. Upon completion I think Buddy is someone I would enjoy meeting. A great read by first time author Jim Roelofs.

A fascinating biography of a young man born with cerebral palsy as told by a physician, who befriended Buddy on a bike ride.
