He followed a call that changed the world. She lived a faith that held it together.
Mira thought her love for Simon would be enough to weather any storm. Their marriage, forged in laughter and grace, was steady—until rumors of a new rabbi ripple through Galilee, and Simon leaves everything behind to follow Him.
Facing a failing business, a sick mother, and whispers from neighbors who call her abandoned, Mira clings to a faith she’s only beginning to understand. When a kind stranger named Rafi arrives offering help and conversation, Mira begins to question everything—her husband’s absence, her own strength, and the vows that once held them together. As tensions rise across Galilee, Mira’s quiet life is swept into something far greater than she ever imagined.
Inspired by Scripture and rooted in historical possibility, The Fisherman’s Wife is a story of deep love, quiet courage, and the unseen women who helped shape the early church.
When the man you love is called to follow the Messiah…can your heart survive the cost of obedience?
A really beautiful story! Kaylee's writing is purposeful and comforting. Descriptions were woven into the story and emotional beats lingered in a really satisfying way. I loved the viewpoint of Mira and her role in Peter's ministry. Her ministry was quiet, but important - a role so many of us can relate to.
I cannot say enough about this book! This book had the same effect on me as The Chosen. I felt like I had traveled back to Capernaum and got to experience what it might have been like while Christ was on the Earth. I felt my faith grow as I read about every single character woven into the story. Their trials, their faith, all strengthened mine. I seriously have over 50 highlights in this book! If Kaylee wrote this entire book just to have my testimony in our Savior strengthened, then it would be worth it. But I have a feeling I am not the only one that can grow closer to Christ by reading this book. I hope you will read it and let it fill your heart, just like it’s filled mine. I received an early copy from the author and my review is honest and my opinion is my own.
“He followed a call that changed the world. She lived a faith that held it together.”
This is a captivating work of biblical fiction. If you enjoy stories that tear at your soul and build you up through a journey of faith in God, this is it! If you love Tessa Afshar’s biblical fiction, you will certainly love this story. The Fisherman’s Wife is a powerful narrative of God’s love. This book brings to life the faith of people within Jesus ministry, especially women, and completely fascinated me! As a historical fiction writer, the attention to historical detail was super impressive. This renewing story will stick with me for a long time.
This book completely wrecked me—in the best way! I loved watching Mira and Peter’s love story unfold while seeing the women around Jesus come to life as the first evangelists of His resurrection. The historical details, friendships, and Mira’s personal journey made it so relatable.
While there’s a sweet romance, the heart of the story is Jesus at the center. A breathtaking, life-changing read!
I received an ARC of this book, and all opinions are my own.
This book is one that you will want to read more than once. You will want to savor it, highlight passages, and mull over its powerful message. At least, I do.
Inspired by Scripture, this is the story of Mira, Simon Peter's wife. From the first paragraph, I was pulled into the story, its setting, and characters. Mira has spunk and is determined not to marry a fisherman like her father. Simon is a fisherman, and from the moment he meets Mira, he is completely captivated. What follows is a beautiful love story. One where Simon eventually heeds the call to follow Jesus, thereby leaving Mira at home to run their business and face rumors of abandonment.
I love everything about this story; its perfect pacing, gripping account, and interesting, unique characters. It helped me understand a period of history that we know only a little about from the Bible. I laughed out loud, teared up, and marveled at the beautifully written words and descriptions. Kaylee brought the story to life in the most incredible way. I highly recommend this book.
A quote I loved: "People don't like what they can't control. If they truly believe that Jesus is who He says He is … it changes everything, and that scares them."
This was a good book. I enjoyed reading about how things may have played out when Jesus was on earth. But, it was very repetitive at times. For example, we’re told Simon was “loud” about a million times. It wasn’t as funny as the author may have thought it was.
Wow it’s neat to imagine the emotions Peter and his wife felt from the time they met to when he was called.
The story, written via Mira’s POV (Peter’s wife) was beautifully woven together. The author did a phenomenal job keeping the Biblical events / timeline accurate.
The moments where Jesus interacted with Mira, and Peter described his time with Him, goodness — so many teary eyed moments.
I highlighted over 70 quotes. This book warmed my heart, encouraged me, and made me feel connected and close to my Savior.
The Fisherman's wife is a stunning and soul-stirring read. Rooted in the scriptures we know and cherish, this story offers a fresh perspective told through the eyes of a disciple's wife. It breathed life into my faith in ways I didn't expect, and there were moments l found myself with tears streaming down my face. Beautifully written and deeply moving, it's a book I'll be recommending to everyone
Lovely book. Beautiful descriptive passages of emotion, scenery. Slowed me right down to savour them. A different perspective on following the manJesus as the wife. Very sensitively written. I felt I was there smelling the bread and the sea. Learning about day to day life in a jewish home. All woven into story. A gem of a book.
This book was really good. My bookclub read this and then we had a FaceTime call with the author! She is super sweet! Thank you Kaylee for joining us at our Vintaged Blessed Bookclub.
I’m getting back into reading and I’m so thankful that God allowed me to get back into this hobby with quality writing! The Fisherman’s Wife was an excellent start to the “Heart of the Twelve” series and I am looking forward to what’s next. A beautiful reminder that following Jesus doesn’t have to look glamorous to give Him glory.
Wow! I’ve always loved Biblical Fiction, but very rarely have I read books surrounding the years that Jesus was alive. This book truly encouraged my heart and moved me to tears!
Kaylee has a way of writing Jesus, and those around him, as a reminder of his kindness and intentionality with everyone he wrote! Of course Mira and Peters story was beautiful, and I savored every second, but seeing how the Lord guided their every step was a story that I’ll treasure forever!
So beautiful, I learned so much about Jesus. I loved all the little nuggets of wisdom sprinkled in this and the story itself was so well put together I could not stop reading
An absolutely wonderful novel that pulls you into what it was like to live during this period in history and to have truly known Christ in person. This book was a blessing to me and I think it will be for you also.

This book touched my heart, brought tears to my eyes and validated my Faith. I would recommend this book to anyone, particularly women who think there’s no calling in this lifetime. Thank you Kaylee Scherer.
Read on Kindle and will be buying to add to my own collection. I look forward to reading it again. A wonderful, thoughtful read. A wonderful story of women working faithfully behind the scenes.
I had a very dear friend of mine send me this as a recommendation along with the arc sign ups and I am SO glad I signed up.
If you look at my bookstagram, you will see that The Fisherman’s Wife isn’t a book I would typically pick up. Not because it’s not good, but rather it’s not my normal fantasy genre. Boy, am I glad I went off the beaten path this time.
The way Kaylee Scherer makes the historical Biblical characters come to life was inspiring. We know that Peter had a wife, since Jesus heals his Mother-In-Law in the New Testament, but very little is known about that wife. This book opens up the realm of possibilities surrounding Peter and Mira’s relationship after he decides to follow Jesus. I found it very relatable, in the way that Mira deals and struggles with loss, the spiritual battles she faces while Peter is away with Jesus as she stays home, as well as her relationship with others when rumors start going around about Jesus before his dëath and resurrection, which ultimately tie to her due to her husband being a faithful and known follower. There were many times that I cried during this book, got physical goosebumps, and thanked God for what He did and continues to do in people’s lives.
If you love Biblical fiction that brings the Bible even more to life, I would highly recommend this book… I would really recommend this book to anyone 🖤 stay updated for the books release by following Kaylee Scherer on her socials!
Wow wow wow! Just wow! This is my favorite book of 2026! I know 2026 has just started, but this is my favorite book already. I loved every second, minute, and hour of reading The Fisherman’s Wife. This story is about Simon’s Peter wife and what they went through when Jesus called Peter to follow Him. Kaylee Scherer did a phenomenal job with The Fisherman’s Wife. I love how imaginative and creative this book was done. Of course, we don’t know what happened to Peter’s wife or what their story was, but this was a beautiful way of telling their story and telling the story of how much we are loved by Jesus. I’m not going to give any spoilers; I’ll let you read for yourself. I loved how this book brought all the feels and how God reminded me though this book to trust in Him and trust in His plans. Thank you, Kaylee, for this book. I can’t wait to read more from this series.
It’s so interesting—I had never considered what it would be like to be a wife of one of the disciples. The conflicting feelings of the awe and wonder that come with meeting and knowing Jesus Himself, to the loneliness and longing for a husband that is gone for weeks on end and sometimes without the knowledge of when he’ll return or where he traveled to. Kaylee painted this conflict so beautifully throughout the entire book.
The descriptions of the scenery and the emotions were so vivid I felt as though I was right there with Mira through it all. At one moment, it even brought me to tears. This is the third book I’ve read that has portrayed the gospel through the eyes of someone fictionalized, and I feel it brings the story even more to life for me to see it all from a different point of view.
You’ll love this book if you like: -Biblical Themes -Poetic Writing -Pure Romance -Faith, Heartbreak & Hope -The True Story of Jesus Christ come to Life!!

Between the Bible itself, Passion plays, The Jesus Film, countless iterations of Biblical fiction novels, and now The Chosen, there's no shortage of takes on the story of Jesus and His disciples. In fact, I expected The Fisherman's Wife to be a somewhat familiar take--as in, a fictional fisherman and his wife who became believers. Imagine my surprise, pleasure, and intrigue when I found out that no, "fisherman's wife" Mira was actually the wife of Peter. Yes, *that* Peter.
Kaylee Scherer's premise pulled me in right away. Her storytelling and faithfulness to Scripture, as well as her focus on Peter, brought new nuances to Jesus' story and the Gospels as a whole. Plus yes, setting this book in Mira's POV gave it not only a fresh feminine angle, but a fresh angle into questions and anxieties male and female believers of the time might have had. I identified with Mira on many levels, such as, "When will I be 'enough?'" "What is my real purpose when it seems like all I'm doing is waiting?" "How do I remain faithful when the assignment is impossibly hard?"
I also love how Mira and Peter live in the tension of being and becoming Christ-followers, yet questioning who He is and how they should respond. I think the church still glosses over that tension too much, as if once you believe in Jesus, you shouldn't experience any spiritual tension, period. I've found the opposite is true and I think Kaylee captured that reality for not only her ancient characters, but her modern audience.
I've said before that even in some Christian or Biblical fiction books, the spiritual threads can't be separated from the plot. That's obviously true here; Jesus is actually on the page for much of the novel. Yet, it's "more" and "deeper" than I usually see. Kaylee captures Jesus as Messiah, yes. She brings Scripture to life the way all authors who write Biblical fiction should. But in The Fisherman's Wife more than most books, I got to see Jesus being a *Person.* He lives, He moves, He interacts with people on an intensely human level. His Godhood remains, but there's not the distance, the awkwardness, the "if He knew me He would walk away" that we often ascribe to that.
The disciples are written similarly. They aren't Sons of God, of course, and some of them don't even get a line in this story. However, Kaylee gives them all distinct personalities, and when they are together, you can see they're a family. They bicker, they debate, they get on each other's nerves--and yet these young men are the best of friends, brothers. They have each other's backs, and despite human frailties, they are unfailingly loyal to Jesus (well, Judas notwithstanding but we knew that).
The plot of The Fisherman's Wife itself is the very definition of bringing readers inside Scripture for a look at what life was like for average people. Not just Peter, Jesus, Mira, and the disciples, but every character, pops off the page. Readers get to experience familiar stories, such as the healing of Mira's ima, in a new way. Yet we also see what it might have looked, felt, and sounded like to be with Jesus even if not "following" on a daily basis. Since Mira gets a lot of information from Peter after the fact, this could've been dry. Instead, Peter's excitement and devotion become contagious. It left me, not just Mira, wanting a lot more.
I did question the subplot with Rafi, not because it wasn't well-written but because I questioned whether the story needed it. By the end, I did see where it fit in, but almost up until the end, Kaylee had me thinking it would go one way, would serve one purpose. For Mira and Peter's sake I'm glad she didn't go there, and I do like the idea of who Rafi was and what his spiritual journey looked like. And yet, the placement and pacing of the subplot still jarred me.
I was also jarred out of the story momentarily because of the language. That is, Mira, a disciple, or someone else semi-frequently uses expressions like, "Oh, great," "You're way more than a fisherman," or, "I'd have to be okay with that." (Once, this word is even rendered as "ok," which--I don't know what rules Kaylee's editorial staff are using but that bugged me). It's not egregious, but sometimes these characters sound like millennials or Gen Zers, not Biblical characters. Maybe Kaylee was trying to increase accessibility, maybe her editorial team is casual about this sort of thing, but it didn't work for me.
Those minor notes aside, The Fisherman's Wife, well, pulled me in. I saw this book is going to be a series and I immediately went looking for info on the next one when I finished. I can't wait, and in the meantime, I urge you to grab this book. It's not just another Gospel retread; it truly is Jesus and the disciples living their lives. You'll love it.
A breathtaking literary creation! I was blown away right from the first page and knew I was about to experience something remarkably special.
The writing is absolutely stunning, brimming with vibrant imagery that lets you picture every moment and truly experience the feelings expressed. Scherer’s talent as a writer and storyteller shines brightly, crafting an immersive experience that allows one to easily drift away in the world of the story and completely lose track of time. The narrative is rich with emotion, and the writing itself feels almost alive, inviting you into a journey where you can almost perceive the presence of Jesus and His followers.
This powerful book leaves a lasting impact, prompting readers to reflect on what it might have been like to live during biblical times. Scherer masterfully connects the past with the present, allowing us to empathize with the struggles and triumphs of those who lived through the events described in scripture. The way she weaves historical possibilities together is seamless and beautiful, making it one of the most remarkable books I have ever read. Through the eyes of the character Mira, Simon Peter’s wife, it challenges us to consider how God can use each of us in unique ways, reminding us that no one is unseen or without worth. I found the inclusion of Hebrew words added an enriching layer to the narrative, enhancing the story's authenticity and deepening my relationship with the text.
Overall, The Fisherman's Wife is a must-read for anyone seeking a profound and transformative literary experience. It is sensational in every sense of the word, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. This book is not just a story rooted in scripture, it’s a thought-provoking exploration of faith that will leave readers forever changed!
The Fisherman's Wife is Kaylee Scherer's first in a series on the women behind the scenes, often not even mentioned in the Scriptures by name or maybe just a line or two.
This fictional account of Simon Peter's wife, Mira paints a picture of a feisty yet mature woman who knows her own mind and her worth. She is supremely comfortable in her own skin and doesn't play second fiddle to a beloved husband. However, she is truly his ezer-kenegdo in every sense of the word - his equal, helpmeet but not his rival.
The entire novel is from her perspective, as if we're peeking into a journal of her thoughts and experiences.
Scherer shows through her cleverly penned novel, the equally vital importance of the supportive role, as is being in the front lines of ministry. She cleverly lays out through Mira, her love for Peter, the pithy wise counsel of her mother and other women and her own struggles in prayer, the path Mira is called to pursue. It's a path many people might be called to tread wisely, but it is also one fraught with temptations peculiar to a competitive, comparison oriented culture. Scherer shows just how old this struggle is and how important right attitudes are if we are to keep our sense of self worth, joy, peace and contentment.
Will Mira ever join Peter in proclaiming the gospel, or will she remain forever in the background, the staunch, silent, the very important ministry of support?
It's a refreshing, mature, godly portrait of a woman comfortable in herself, while highlighting the difficulties of a long distance marriage, difficulties - practical and otherwise of women who stay at home while their menfolk are off fulfilling their calling/job.
There are some books that quietly slip into your heart, and without hesitation, 'The Fisherman’s Wife' is one of them. From the very first page, Kaylee breathes life into a story that is both tender and courageous, reminding us that faith often takes its deepest roots in the unseen corners of ordinary life. Mira’s journey is written with such authenticity and compassion that I often found myself pausing, not to turn the page, but to reflect. Kaylee captures not only the texture of first-century Galilee through detailing meticulously and accurately its rhythms, tensions, and beauty, but also the heartbeat of a woman learning to love, endure, and believe in the midst of absence. Through loss, longing, meekness and quiet strength, Mira becomes a mirror for us all: for every soul who has waited, trusted, or wondered if God still sees them. What sets this story apart though is Kaylee’s delicate balance of imagination and reverence. Her writing feels almost like prayer; poetic, yet grounded; historical, yet deeply human. This is not merely biblical fiction; it’s an invitation to look closer, to feel deeper, and to rediscover the unseen grace that holds us together. The Fisherman’s Wife is a breathtaking debut novel, one that I find is lingering long after the final words. It’s a story of faith, love, and the quiet courage of those who wait on God. One that longed to be told, and has been with beautiful clarity and the care it deserved. Indeed "A perfect gift from the One who created it all". I am looking forward to Kaylee's release 'The Thunder Between Us', the next book to follow in her 'Hearts of the Twelve series'. Highly, wholeheartedly recommended.
Wow!!!!! This book is intense, captivating and simply mind-blowing. This was such a wonderful read with deep insights. The way the author delved into this story creating a fictional perspective to Peter's journey with Jesus through the eyes of his wife Mira is astounding. Mira is a woman with deep love for her husband, Peter, encouraging in love and praying for him at the same time doing her best to understand and truly follow Jesus. She has her questions, her doubts about what her purpose was in the whole picture but she never stopped looking for answers and never waived in showing love and care. Mira was indeed an anchor, both for her husband and loved ones. She found her true purpose and became a blessing to many. Kaylee Scherer captured the essence of a woman finding her calling in the midst of accepting and helping her husband achieve his calling. I love the way the author wove the love of God, His awesome power and brought a book worth reading and draw readers to know Jesus and God's love for themselves. This book opened my eyes once again to God's love for us, reminding one again of His constant presence in our lives no matter what happens. An amazing book worth reading over and over again. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I cannot summarise this book anymore that just stunning.
Now, although I've written a Romance novel, I am not normally one for romance books and although I am a Christian I have never read a Christian Romance, and boy have I missed out.
I have never laughed and cried over a book as much as I did with this. Mira's point of view of being alone, questioning her worth, missing her husband, suffering abuse and seeing the life, death and resurrection of Jesus was beautiful.
I finished this book feeling encouraged, loved and reassured, as someone who is in a long distance relationship, that even though separation feels soul crushing at times, the reunions are blessings wrapped up in love.
I'm always looking for a new biblical fiction author to enjoy, as I just don't think there are enough of them! I enjoyed and appreciated what Scherer brings to the table here. Though it is biblical fiction, it didn't read like a typical biblical fiction novel to me, in a good way. It felt more historic in nature, and grabbed my attention from the start. You could see how much time and attention Scherer took in researching everything on the page out, and I thought she had great character development. I'm excited to see what's next from this new author!
I received a complimentary copy of this book and was not required to write a favorable review.
