My two-year mission takes a disastrous turn when my own brother, Captain Coraly, captures the very man I was sent to assassinate; the king of our sworn enemy.
Furious, I storm into my brother’s office, threatening to quit as an agent and enrol in the infamous, cutthroat Bensguard Outpost Academy. Maybe I overreacted. Maybe. But in my rage, I signed up, and let’s just say things did not go as planned.
My brother retaliates by making me face the enemy king under my true identity…and worse, as his new teammate. The king is not pleased. Lucky for me, we’ll be soul-bound, meaning he can’t kill me without dying himself. But there are plenty of ways to make someone suffer before death comes knocking.
To make things worse, he locks his mind-shield, keeping me from listening to his thoughts that I know contain the truth behind his kingdom’s brutal attacks on my people. But he’s hiding something even darker, a secret about me. A secret that keeps him at the Bensguard Outpost, even when I offer him freedom. Something he’s willing to die for and risk my life in the process.
And soon, I realise…my life has a bigger purpose, and the enemy king isn’t my worst threat. Not even close. If you like to read Romantic Fantasy by Sarah J. Maas and Rebecca Yarros involving enemies to lovers and the slow burn romance, then this series is for you!

4 ⭐️ ( but a low one, though) So I'm a little befuddled writing this review. I did like this story, but I feel like the first 5 or 6 chapters aren't the same vibe as the rest of the story, and honestly, NOT needed. So far, the heist and Angie and Ben 's story before the academy hasn't been relevant. Instead, it could have been pages used for some more world building- explaining white wings and black wings, the academy, etc. King Ben Blackbone is a very swoon worthy MMC, though. I enjoyed seeing his relationship with Angie develop. And their banter was insane!
Angelica is on a two year mission to assassinate the black winged king. When she gets caught stealing the only dagger that can kill him, things spiral quickly. The king ends up captured by her brother, who then forces a soul bond between Angelica and the very man she is supposed to kill. Now, if he dies, she dies. To make things even more complicated, Angelica enters a deadly academy in hopes of protecting her people. She and the king have already been circling each other for two years with unspoken feelings simmering beneath the surface. On top of that, Angelica is hiding a dangerous secret: her own powerful magic.
The premise sounded really cool to me, and I was excited to dive in even though this thing is massive at over 1,000 pages. The first chapter had me hooked right away with Angelica sneaking in to steal the one weapon that could kill Ben, the black winged king. I thought we were about to get a tense, high stakes enemies to lovers story.
But here is where it fell flat. It never really felt like enemies to lovers. By the time the book starts, Angelica and Ben already have strong feelings for each other, so there was not much tension or buildup. It felt rushed, like we skipped over the fun parts, the banter, the slow burn, the push and pull. That is the best part of enemies to lovers, and without it, the romance didn’t really land for me.
For such a long book, the world building also felt really thin. With a fantasy this size, I expect more background, more detail, and more time to sink into the world. Instead, everything moved so quickly that scenes would be over before I even realized. After a while, I just accepted it was not going to give me the detail I wanted and tried to roll with it.
Angelica’s inner monologue didn’t help either. It came across as flat and even childish sometimes. The book leaned hard into the miscommunication trope too, which is one of my least favorites, especially when it drags on forever. Both characters kept hiding secrets from each other and after a while it just got irritating.
What I did enjoy were the side characters and the magic. The different types of magic were fun to learn about, and the side characters were honestly the highlight for me. I found myself way more invested in them than in Angelica or Ben, and they were what kept me going.
It ends on a heavy cliffhanger, and normally that would have me grabbing the next book right away. But honestly, I had to drag myself through this one, and I just don’t see myself continuing the series. It had such a promising premise, but for me it never really delivered.

This is a great start to a new series by TM Caruana, with good world building, wonderful characters, brilliant banter, action and magic, secrets and betrayal, and some great twists; I haven't been able to put it down.
The blurb hints at enemies-to-lovers, but seems to start in the middle with Angie having already spent two years undercover getting close to the King of the Black Wings, Ben Blackbone, so she can kill him. (I was a little sorry we didn't see more of their interactions in the Black Wing territory.)
"This is Angelica Stone. King Blackbone's …" Murben hesitated and looked at me. "What would you call your relationship?" I shrugged my shoulders. "I'm his toy."
But after a 'failed' attempt to steal the Black Blade she learns he's been captured along with his bodyguard and another on her brother's orders and returns to the outpost where she threatens to enlist with the academy which her brother's tried to protect her from.
Angie is a white wing (though she also has black wings) and is struggling with her feelings for Ben. She is growing fond of him but hates what he is, but to enlist she's made to bind her soul to him creating some great moments between them and some wonderful banter. Being back home also adds another complication of the boyfriend she'd left before going undercover, who is now her unit's captain, and feelings are still there, though her feelings for the enemy king might be stronger.
What happened to you in the Black Wing Territory?" Ben stepped around me, shoving Zayd back. "I happened."
Ben is king of the Black Wings, enemies with the White Wings though he will do everything to protect Angie. Of course once they're soul bound if she dies, he dies. But Ben is hiding secrets and might know more than he's letting on.
"You turn the black-wing king into an emotional wreak every time he comes near you." "What?" I tensed and curled up to sit straight on the branch, staring at him. "Every time he looks at you, I can hear his heart racing and when Zayd puts his arms around you, his heart races to the point I think it will fail at any moment and go into cardiac arrest." My brows rose and there were so many emotions spinning around inside me "Just like your heart does when you look at him. You like him, too."
The supporting characters are great with friendship, banter and some wonderful different magics (Ben's is dark, Angelica denies she has any, and I loved the idea of Mazdon trading his magic on the black market while on a drunken night out). This is told just from Angie's POV and I hope that we get some of Ben's POV in the next book.

When I first picked up this book, I didn’t let its size intimidate me. The summary hooked me right away — enemies to lovers, an academic setting, and a world full of dark secrets? That's an easy Yes!
The beginning was fantastic. Those early chapters had all the tension and high-stakes I was hoping for. But as the story went on, it started to lose some steam. It almost felt like I walking into their relationship evolution halfway through it. By the time we meet Angie and Ben, while they are on different sides politicaly, they’re already past the “enemies” part and are well into the “evident crush” stage, which I don't mind, but made me miss that back-and-forth banter that usually makes this trope shine.
Once we reached Bensguard, where most of the story takes place, things started to drag a bit. For such a long book, the world-building stayed surface-level. There is an interesting magic system and different realms, but it never really dives deep enough to feel immersive. To me this was a missed opportunity, especially with so much page space to explore it.
Romance-wise, the book leaned heavily on the miscommunication trope — and since this is a single POV book, Angie's struggles with secrets and doubts became very repetitive. The tension that started strong early lost traction and there was little growth for the characters or the plot as we were stuck following them in mundane day-to-day situations that had little impact on the plot.
Angie had the makings of a great FMC — she’s determined, capable, and clearly has heart — but a lot of times she came across as immature. I also felt that their constant fights were never truly resolved… they eventually just moved on from it because they missed each other but never resolved their issues, which lead to them having the same fight over and over again. Moving forward with the series, I hope we get significant growth from her as character and from them as a couple, as they have the potential to be a great couple when they start working together fully.
Ben, on the other hand, was the classic brooding MMC who turns soft for his girl (which I don’t mind one bit), I really enjoyed reading about him, and hopefully as the secrets are out in the open, we get some of his POVs.
There were some lovely side characters and a few late twists that picked up the pace toward the end, but I just wish that momentum had been spread more evenly throughout the story.
Overall, the book had a lot of potential — the premise is great, the setup is fun, and the vibes are there — but it could’ve used tighter editing and more forward motion in both plot and character development. If you’re someone who loves romantasy that leans heavily on the romance side and doesn’t mind a slower pace, this might be right up your alley!

DNF 64% This book should have half the pages it does. In no way it should be 800 pages. There are too many unnecessary chapters. But this had a lot of potential with the species, idea of the final trial, a really great MMC who had was kind of dark and dangerous, but also very mature. But it just shrank. As a reader we are used to savor and save each detail as if it will be important in the future. And there were many irrelevant episodes that would look important and meaningful but actually wasn't important. So I felt tricked and that my time was wasted. The relationship between FMC and MMC was dragged as well. The tension and disagreements was deliberate and intentional, without natural cause to it. It felt like I was in a teenager relationship drama, and everything was only for the drama. FMC - 21 years old and MMC - 26 was at best acting as 15 year old and 18. FMC was total hypocrite always putting blame on the MMC and just playing with his feelings and their relationship - like a teenager! Also, there were some triggers in this book where young adult already can seperate what is wrong and what is right and who is a victim in that situation (Chapter 42). All in all, the same banter, just gets boring.. Also it just makes a person angry , just like in a real life. You start disliking the relationship, so thats what had happened to me. You can expect all the drama here. Like watching a loooooon loooong tv series for 300 episodes, with the same Main characters. It looks that everything had happened to them just in 1 year. The writing was sometimes hard to follow as there were leap of thoughts, inconsistency, sometimes it was hard to follow who is talking or about what. I don't like to not finish books, but in the middle of the book I just felt like burning my time.
Oh. My. Goddess. This book absolutely consumed me—five fiery stars all the way! From page one, I was obsessed. The tension, the banter, the romance—utter perfection. When she says “You’re a menace.” and he shot back “And yet you love me,” I practically melted. And the way he calls her my queen? Ugh, lethal. My heart, my soul, my everything. Absolute perfection.
The academy backdrop is dripping with danger—deadly trials, whispered secrets, and the intoxicating clash of black wings versus white wings. The whole rivalry made every stolen kiss and risky glance burn hotter. Our heroine isn’t just strong, she’s magnetic—everyone wants her power, but underneath all that fire she’s a girl aching to be seen for more than a weapon. And the fact that he sees her? That’s the kind of romance that ruins you in the best way.
Oh, and the pet pig? Iconic. The little bundle of chaos stole scenes like it was born for the spotlight.
This book is sinful, addictive, and utterly breathtaking. Call me ruined, call me obsessed—my queen now owns my heart.
I really enjoyed reading the story. The plot just hit the spot for me although I wish there was some more info in the background of white and black wings and a bit more world building.
I absolutely loved the MMC he was my favourite character in the entire book? He really hit the spot with me. You could really tell early on that he loves the MFC! Her on the other hand really started to irritate me as their relationship started to blossom. I found her childish at times as well as really hypocritical. It was okay for her to have her secrets, but the MMC isn’t allowed his, she’s allowed to do things but he isn’t. I hope we see more growth from her in the future! And just because this is my view of her does not mean you will have the same view.
I think this book was beautifully written with great descriptions. You could really picture the main characters as well as the side characters who I found really added to the story each bringing something different!
I really look forward to reading the next book!

This is the beginning of the story of Angelica Coraly and Ben, King Blackbone. Set in the world of Blackwings and Whitewings, Angie is working as an undercover agent, her mission being to kill Ben, the king of the Blackwings. When the mission goes wrong she ends up becoming the kings soul-bound teammate at the Bensguard Outpost Academy where they face tough challenges and death threats together at the start of a three year enrolment…..
This started off a bit slow, but after just a few chapters you don’t want to put it down as there are so many twists and turns. It’s also a pretty long book which isn’t so great for getting much else done! The plot keeps you guessing, the characters are excellent and there’s a real twist at the end which leaves you hoping that there’s not going to be too long a wait for the next book in this excellent series 🐈⬛

I really enjoyed this book. Loved Angie's character and really felt for her, but it annoyed me at how easily she and Ben patched things up. Now normally I'm happy to root for morally grey MMC but there was a point where I just couldn't trust him any longer and for some reason I found myself rooting slightly for General Denor - so yeah I think I'm probably the only one. But the sad truth is that it seems everyone who has any power is currently using her All the side characters on this one are really great and you can really immerse yourself into the world building of the book. I am eager to get hold of book to see how the secrets unravel further and ensure that Angie can flourish when the truths have been shared / revealed.
This slow burn, enemies-to-lovers, fantasy romance is off to a great start. We have Angelica tasked with killing Ben the king of the Blackwings when it all goes awry and she finds herself soul bound to him instead which means if he dies then so does she. It’s an intriguing story where we enter the Bensguard Outpost Academy, a dark and dangerous place with many challenges and secrets. We start slow but build up as the book progresses and with such incredible world building, I found myself totally immersed into this world and unable to stop reading! Looking forward to continuing this journey in book two!
I really enjoyed this story and its characters. A cool concept and lots of secrets and angst to go around. At the beginning we are dropped post 2 years after the main characters met but plenty of drama remains as now both know the truth of who the is and things get a bit crazy as they are supposed to be enemies and all the drama that comes with that. But things are not quite as they seem and the story has some twist sand surprises along the way. Sometimes wanted to slap Angie and Ben but their interactions at times were a hoot and had me glued to the end. Loved it
If Fourth Wing and ACOTAR had a baby this book would be their child. From page one this book pulled me in and I was hooked. It kept me on my toes and I simply couldn’t put it down. I love love love Angie and Ben’s enemies to lovers/slow burn relationship. The amount of spice to plot was done perfectly! And my god the ending had my jaw on the floor and I can’t wait for the next book in the series! Such a great read!
Wow this book was amazing! Perfect plot and theme, along with the characters. Highly recommend it to everyone. Really worthy of 5 stars.I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
It’s a very intriguing enemies to lovers romance that will pull you and hold your attention till the end. Angie & Ben are supposed to be enemies but things are not what they seem, with all the banter, action, twist, turns, and unexpected surprises you will be on the edge of your seat.
I received this book for free as an ARC and wow! The tension, the world building, the grief, the passion! This book gave me all the ranges of emotions, all the details I could want, and more. I loved every moment of it and the ending just made me want the second book right this second! Can't wait for more after this!
