The next thrilling instalment in John Carson's utterly gripping DCI Liam Brodie series. A must-read for fans of J D Kirk and Ed James. 🔍👀 Some killers are caught.

Others simply go into hiding…

DCI Liam Brodie is no stranger to horror. Seven years ago, he led the hunt for a murderer who killed seven women, leaving their bodies out on display like some kind of morbid exhibition. Never any witnesses; never any clue as to who he was. The press called him The Embalmer. Brodie called him a monster.

Now, seven years later, the killings have started again. Same method. Same pattern. Same nightmare.

Brodie is called back to Fife to lead the investigation. But this time, the killer isn’t just repeating the past—he’s rewriting it. And Brodie isn’t just hunting a serial killer… He’s being hunted.

EXCERPT: The drip of water echoed somewhere in the darkness. It was a slow, hollow plink . . . plink . . . plink . . . that counted off the seconds like a metronome, counting down the seconds of her life. Each drop landed with echoing precision, reminding her she was still alive - but maybe not for much longer.
She was cold. Not the cold that made you shiver and pull a blanket tighter, but the deep, bone-aching kind that settled inside you like rot. Her skin was goose-pimpled, her back pressed against a hard, flat surface that could be anything. She couldn't tell. All she knew was that it was damp, unyielding and drained the warmth from her body.
She was naked. Not stripped, but exposed, like something being studied. Her arms were pinned behind her, wrists chafing against tight bindings. Rope? Wire? She couldn't tell - her legs were bound too, ankles tethered together with a similar roughness.
Something - thick leather straps, maybe - pressed across her chest and hips, anchoring her to whatever slab she'd been placed on.
She tried to move, but her body no longer listened. She'd thrashed when she first woke. Kicked. Screamed. The pain had come fast and sharp, a cramp in her arms, a tightening in her chest. Panic. But now . . . now there was only stillness. Fatigue had dulled the edge of terror, replacing it with a cold creeping realisation.

ABOUT 'FLASE WITNESS': Some killers are caught.

MY THOUGHTS: A gripping 'cat and mouse' thriller!

I was just as absorbed and hooked by False Witness as I was by Broken Bones, the first in this series. The plotting is intricate; the killer meticulous. Dark and gritty with multilayered characters, the tension and suspense are palpable throughout. Another thing that simply oozes from the pages is DCI Liam Brodie's sense of frustration as the killer continues to run rings around him and his team, leaving no clues behind . . .

An outstanding read . . . tense, twisty, dark and utterly absorbing.

⭐⭐⭐⭐.7

False Witness by John Carson is a gripping, intense follow-up in the DCI Brodie series that absolutely delivers on suspense, character development, and a chillingly clever plot.

This installment seamlessly builds on the previous book, continuing the haunting thread of a past serial killer who may not be as “past” as everyone hoped. The way the story connects back creates an underlying tension from the very beginning, especially as it becomes clear that Brodie himself may be more deeply entangled in the killer’s plans than ever before.

The investigation unfolds like an intricate web, with the culprit’s planning both impressive and deeply unsettling. There’s a real sense of frustration and urgency as Brodie and his team work tirelessly to piece things together, often feeling just one step behind. What makes this even more compelling is the unexpected role of Kane—an unlikely confidante whose insight adds a fascinating psychological layer to the case and helps illuminate the killer’s motives.

While I had my suspicions about the culprit based on the previous book, that didn’t take away from the experience at all. If anything, it added a sense of anticipation. What truly keeps you hooked is not just the “who,” but the “how” and “why”—the methodology and victimology are both chilling and meticulously crafted. The level of detail behind the crimes (and the cover-up) highlights the killer’s disturbing dedication and mindset in a way that keeps the tension high throughout.

The pacing is sharp, the stakes feel personal, and the atmosphere is consistently dark and immersive. This is a series that continues to build momentum, with characters that feel increasingly layered and a central mystery that keeps evolving in unexpected ways.

Overall, this is a standout crime thriller—twisty, unsettling, and incredibly hard to put down. A must-read for fans of dark police procedurals, and I’m already looking forward to what comes next in the series.

✨ I received an ARC; this is my honest review.

False Witness is a tense, atmospheric addition to the DCI Liam Brodie series, steeped in dread, memory, and the kind of unfinished business that refuses to stay buried. From the moment Brodie is called back to Fife, the novel taps into a chilling sense of déjà vu—because the killings aren’t just familiar, they’re an echo of the case that nearly broke him seven years earlier.

The setup is gripping: a murderer known as The Embalmer, a man who staged his victims with unnerving precision, vanished without a trace after claiming seven lives. No witnesses, no leads, no closure. Now the same signature has returned, and the question hangs over every chapter—did the killer simply go into hiding, or is someone else picking up where he left off?

Brodie’s emotional landscape gives the story its depth. He’s seasoned, steady, but still carrying the weight of that first investigation, and returning to Fife forces him to confront the ghosts he’s tried to outrun. The tension sharpens further as it becomes clear the killer isn’t just repeating old patterns but twisting them, rewriting the past in ways that feel personal. The hunter becoming the hunted is a familiar trope, but here it’s handled with a quiet, creeping menace that works beautifully.

The procedural elements are tight and engaging, but what elevates the novel is its psychological undercurrent. Brodie’s fear, his determination, and the sense that the past is closing in on him create a compelling emotional thread. The pacing is brisk without sacrificing atmosphere, and the escalating danger keeps the pages turning.

Dark, gripping, and cleverly constructed, False Witness delivers exactly what fans of the series crave: a smart, character‑driven thriller with stakes that cut close to the bone.

False Witness by John Carson is a very highly recommended procedural/crime thriller and is an excellent second book in the series featuring DCI Liam Brody.

DCI Liam Brodie is Called back to Fife, Scotland, when a body is found on the beach that closely resembles the bodies left by a serial killer called The Embalmer from seven years previously. The name was given based on how the bodies of the victims were left. The case was never solved before and the fear is that the serial killer is back or someone is imitating him. As the investigation unfolds, it seems that The Embalmer wasn't as inactive as previously thought and, in fact, he may have been expanding his modus operandi as well as targeting anyone connected with the previous murders.

The writing is exceptional in this series. With a compelling plot, the tension rising throughout this fast-paced, chilling crime thriller. It is always appreciated by this reader when procedurals logically follow the clues and information discovered during the investigation. Included within the investigation are chilling chapters from the point-of-view of victims the killer targeted to protect his identity. This could be read as a standalone novel, but I appreciated having read the first book in the series, Broken Bones.

All the characters are portrayed as realistic individuals and the whole team continues to work very well together. Brodie's girlfriend/partner psychologist Ruth Calder is back and provides some important insight into the case. The warning about bowling leagues was also noted and appreciated.

False Witness is an excellent choice for readers who enjoy procedurals/crime thrillers. Thanks to Boldwood Books for providing me with an advance reader's copy via NetGalley. My review is voluntary and expresses my honest opinion.

It all began seven years ago. A killer dubbed The Embalmer murdered seven women in the space of eighteen months, draining their blood and leaving them on beaches in what seemed to be perfectly planned crimes with no clues left behind. Then it all stopped suddenly. Now it looks like he is back when DCI Liam Brodie, in place of their still missing DCI Alan McRae, is called back to Fife to lead the team including DI Art McKenzie, DS Cameron Reid and DS Freya Munro into another eerily similar death. The previous prime suspects from the old cases are reinterviewed. Brodie visits Dr Gabriel Kane, the pathologist who he finally caught for the murders of seventeen people, to gain a fascinating insight. Kane tells him The Embalmer won’t have stopped, he is merely not displaying his work as before and is honing his craft. The reader certainly knows he was responsible for the death of a doctor who discovered too much about him. And more chillingly, he says this new murder is down to the fact that Brodie, SIO on the original investigation, came back to Fife two weeks ago. In that case, does the killer have anything to do with McRae’s disappearance? It seems the Embalmer has a plan involving Brodie, now also joined by DI Lucy Warren from Edinburgh MIT and, with his partner forensic psychologist Ruth Campbell firmly in his corner, it’s up to Brodie to change how it all ends. For good.
This is a brilliant follow up to book one which I recommend everyone to read first in order to get to know the main characters. It’s another complex and twisty multi-layered police procedural with some very good suspects and again lightened by some great humorous banter between Art and Cameron. Liam is an incredibly likeable person and a good detective, and I am looking forward to more stories in this series.

“False Witness” is the second book in the DCI Liam Brodie series by John Carson. I decided I wanted to listen to the audiobook of “Broken Bones” (book #1 in the series) and I am glad that I did. “False Witness” works as a stand-alone novel, but you will definitely benefit from prior knowledge that you gain from the first book. It also adds to the emotions of the ending of this book. And let me say, you will enjoy “Broken Bones”. It is a top-notch thriller.

DCI Liam Brodie is confronted by true evil in this novel. Seven years ago, there was a serial killer known as The Embalmer. Brodie was called in to help assist with the case and then The Embalmer just disappeared.

Now, after all these years, a similar killing takes place. Did The Embalmer move back into the area? Did he ever truly leave? If not, then why did he stop the killing? Or, maybe, someone is inspired by the past and is mimicking The Embalmer?

This is a brilliant, dark thriller. I can’t praise John Carson enough for the world he has created. This book just seemed to fly by as I was hanging on his every word. This has moved into my Top 5 series of all time. I am so stoked that they are already offering a pre-buy of book #3 in this series.

If you love a good mystery, this is the book for you. “False Witness” is the best book I have read so far this year. Before you start reading, practice your deep-knee bends because the ending will have you picking your jaw up off the floor.

A Five Star Triumph! What if the killer the police failed to catch never stopped killing? What if, seven years on, the trail you thought had gone cold had simply been running in a different direction all along? DCI Liam Brodie is about to find out, and the answers are more chilling than anyone could have imagined.

'False Witness' is a triumphant blend of meticulous police work and deep emotional resonance that's easily read as a standalone. John Carson has created a high-stakes investigation that is as complex as it is gripping, but it is the characters that make it truly shine. Liam remains a leader with empathy and grit.
When The Embalmer case resurfaces, Liam soon suspects the killer has not been quiet, they've been carrying out killings in entirely different ways.
The story is a puzzle, and like a man clutching at loose threads in the dark, Liam is desperately searching for the one that will unravel it all. Navigating this labyrinth of clues under immense pressure, he is utterly compelling to follow.
The camaraderie within his loyal team is second to none, and I found myself reading into the wee small hours, thoroughly immersed. A meticulously plotted procedural with a perfectly tied up ending. I can't wait for the next one!
My thanks to Netgalley and Boldwood Books for the ARC. This is my own opinion.

DCI Liam Brodie is called back to Fife when a body is discovered that resembles the way a serial killer had left his bodies seven years ago. The case was never solved. Is this the same person doing the killing or is there a copycat killer?

This is a fast-paced, chilling, gripping and well-written story. The suspense builds throughout as I race through the pages. We get twists and red herrings along he way. I couldn't guess who The Embalmer was.

False Witness, the second DI Liam Brodie novel, is a suspenseful and fast-paced thriller that pits DI Brodie against a serial killer who has apparently resurfaced after seven years of no activity. But the more DI Brodie investigates, the more it appears that the killer, known as The Embalmer for the method of his killings, has been continuing to kill all along. Now he's going after the people who investigated his previous killing spree, and DI Brodie himself is on his list.

This book is very hard to put down as the story unfolds. The suspense builds throughout as DI Brodie and The Embalmer circle closer and closer to each other. There are a couple of rather convenient coincidences and a rather short list of potential suspects, but overall this is a really good murder mystery. The descriptions of the Scottish locations are so evocative that I was finding myself hoping for a TV series after a few more have been written.

DCI Liam Brodie was part of a hunt for a serial killer seven years ago. The killer stopped after eighteen months and was never caught. A woman in her late twenties is found by a dog walker, the positioning of her body is reminiscent of the seven women who were murdered seven years ago. The Serial killer was named the Embalmer. While the hunt for the Embalmer begins, DCI Alan McRae is also missing and he may be involved in the murders. Is this the work of a copycat? Or is the Embalmer back, and if so, why now?

The Embalmer's methods were brilliantly though of and the execution was enthralling. Brodie was a great character, he is smart, methodical and listens to everyone around him. When it became evident that the killer wanted Brodie's attention, the story turned dark and intense. The investigation started to close in on Brodie and his need to catch the Emblamer became critical. I enjoyed everything about this book. Highly recommend!

The story follows DCI Liam Brody, who is sent to Fife to investigate the sudden disappearance of DCI McRae, who has been missing for ten days. Soon after Brody begins his search, a body is found near the seashore. He is assigned to this murder case as well.
The killing closely resembles an old, unsolved case known as the Embalmer case, in which seven victims were murdered similarly seven years earlier. As Brody investigates further, he discovers that McRae had been secretly looking into this cold case, even though he was not officially assigned to it. McRae had noted that he was close to solving it.
Brody follows these clues and expands his investigation. As more killings occur, the pressure increases to identify the killer quickly and prevent further deaths.
The book presents a detailed police investigation, showing how detectives follow every clue carefully. It keeps the reader engaged and shows how such cases are handled.

Seven years ago, there was a series of killings by someone given the moniker “The Embalmer,” followed by his disappearance. Now, he has resurfaced, and DCI Liam Brodie is called to Fife to assist in the investigation. As clues emerge, it appears that he may not have been as silent as initially suspected, potentially adopting a new modus operandi for his killings. As Liam delves deeper into the case, his life is in danger.

This is the second installment in the Liam Brodie series; I have read both. While it can be enjoyed as a standalone, readers familiar with the prior book will have some background and insights into Liam’s character and some of the other characters.

This is a fast paced mystery/thriller. On the dark side, there are twists and red herrings. Fans of mysteries, solid police procedurals, Scottish locations, and thrillers will enjoy this read.

Thanks to @netgalley @johncarsonauthor & @boldwoodbooks for the ARC in return for my honest review.

This is the first book I've read by this author & it definitely will not be the last! I didn't even know that this was the 2nd book in the DCI Liam Brodie series either, I'm gutted to have missed fhe 1st one but will go back and read it!
The story had me hooked right from the very beginning and was full of twists & turns. It would flits back and forth between older cases and recent ones but you never felt lost with it. All of the characters were great and I can't wait to see them evolve more in future books.
The story is set in & around the outskirts of Edinburgh and was brilliant to be able to visualise the locations having been a frequent visitor to Edinburgh since childhood.
I would wholeheartedly recommend this book if you are looking for a new police crime thriller!

Another winner in the DCI Brodie series for sure.
After taking what law enforcement believed was a 7 year hiatus, it now appears that the infamous serial killer known as the "Embalmer" is back at it. And clues are, beginning to point to the very real belief that he never actually stopped his killings but rather, changed his methods. Clues being uncovered by people close to the investigation, seem to I dictate a,string of deaths, ruled as heart attacks, might have been deaths induced by drugs to simulate a heart issue.
DCI Brodie is in the thick of it again, looking for links between recent suspicious sudden deaths that were ruled as heart related.
Non stop suspense and intrigue as the murders begin again and connections are found in other recent deaths, as well.
Good build up with interestingly intriguing and familiar characters.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy of this book.

DCI Liam Brodie is assigned the case of the embalmer. He killed 7 years ago and is back. Looking at the case with fresh eyes the team realise that the killer had other victims, made to look like accidental deaths. He wants to play, but can Brodie catch him before he kills the ones he loves?

When I saw this was set in Fife, as a Fifer, I had to read it. The descriptions of the streets, beaches and places were spot on and exactly as I know them to be. Brodie was a likeable character whose frustrations were obvious and bursting from the pages. Scary at times, but a book I couldn’t and wouldn’t put down. I haven’t read book 1, but having really enjoyed this one? It’s on my tbr list. I don’t think I missed too much not having the background knowledge. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good crime thriller.

What a mind churning story

Once again we are amongst Liam Brodie and the comedy duo of Art and Cameron, looking into the return of the embalmer, and still trying to find out the whereabouts of DCI Alan McRae, whose disappearance is lingering in everyones thoughts. Liam brings in DI Lucy Warren from Edinburgh to help, and between them all, they work out connections with the previous kills of 7 years before, linking them up with the latest ones....
You think you've found the killer this time only to find that perhaps its someone else... we're kept guessing until the last few pages, where it all falls into place, and you kick yourself for not realising it earlier!!
Another great book that pages the way for a brilliant series to come 5🌟 is the least this book deserves 👏

Liam Brodie's next outing sees him return to Fife. There he is caught up in a case with similarities to a case seven years previous. The characters in this book are becoming familiar and the relationship between them all is developing into a well established team, even though Liam is based in Edinburgh. Plenty of humour among the more serious stuff to lighten the load of the bad stuff. Atmospheric settings help to visualise the locale for the action and it is easy to picture the action . An enjoyable ride into Scottish policing which I would recommend. I enjoyed this book very much as it is well written.

The second book in the series featuring DCI Liam Brodie. In this story, a serial killer has returned after a number of years absence and DCI Brodie seems to be the catalyst for this new killing spree.
I didn't enjoy this book as much as the first one in the series. The formula was so predictable, there was nothing new or interesting in the plot. I've read similar scenarios so many times before. The potential to develop the characters from the first book was never taken; they remained flat and uninteresting. On a positive note, it was a quick read but nothing special.

An absolutely gripping thriller. Seven women were killed seven years ago, and they were embalmed by a murderer known as, well, the Embalmer. Obvious name aside, this is a very tense premise, and seven years later, in the present day, DCI Liam Brodie is investigating a return of this same killer. Who is the killer, actually? What do they want?

A super tense and interesting thriller with some dark and ominous aspects and a pretty fast body count, the more and more it goes. The ending reveal is especially dramatic, and is honestly not someone I predicted, but is quite logical. 5 stars. Thanks to Boldwood and Netgalley for this E-ARC.

Another installment in the DCI Brodie series.

This links to the previous, essentially continuing as a past serial killer threatens to add him to their list.

It's an intricate web that the culprit has managed to weave and leaves Brodie stumped for a while. His team mates are working hard with him but it's the unlikely confidante in Kane that helps shed some light into the murderer and what it all means for Brodie.

I wasn't surprised by the culprit as they gave off certain vibes in the last book. However, their methodology and victimology is what keeps you in suspense and shows the level of dedication (and insanity) that has gone into the crimes as well as the cover up!!

This is the second book in the DCI Liam Brodie series and I think I would have benefited from reading the first to help me connect more with the characters. That said this is a really good police procedural which I really enjoyed. The team embark on the search for a serial killer known as The Embalmer who has resurfaced after several years. Brodie is strong and reliable, and it was clear to see how much his team valued his leadership. I did figure out the perpetrator about half way through but it didn't deter from my enjoyment. I am keen to read book one and also the next which is due out later this year.

Book 2 of the DCI Brodie Series sees our inspector investigating a serial killer who has resumed their MO after 7yrs. The elusive ‘embalmer’ is back with vengeance, but there’s a strange pattern to the victims. In parallel, Detective Alan McRae, missing since book 1, after a holiday to Tenerife, continues to elude his colleagues. What is the connection? Twists & turns in every chapter, leaves us guessing who the perpetrator is. Can our DCI trust anyone?
A fantastic follow up story, highly recommended. Huge thanks to the author & publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review

This second installment in the series is a good addition. Even though I figured out who the culprit was fairly quickly, I still found it an entertaining and well-paced story. The flashbacks sometimes make the narrative a bit harder to follow, but they clearly serve a purpose and add important context to the plot. All in all, it’s a solid police procedural, and I’m definitely interested in reading more books featuring this character in the lead role. I recommend it.

False Witness is the second installment in the DCI Brodie series, and it absolutely delivers. After enjoying the first book, I had high hopes, and this one didn't disappoint.

The ‘Embalmer’ has returned- but is it the original killer or a deadly copycat? DCI Brodie is tasked with untangling the truth in a race against time. Much like the first book, the plot is expertly paced, keeping me guessing while making the stakes feel incredibly personal.

I’m officially a fan of John Carson’s dark, twisty thrillers. If you like gritty police procedurals, don't miss this series!

It’s everything I love: serial killers, a flawed detective, and a dark, twisty case that keeps you guessing. DCI Liam Brodie must confront a resurfacing killer from his past while trying to protect those closest to him. But nothing is as it seems and the suspense and intrigue is constant throughout!

Despite False Witness being part of the DCI Liam Brodie series, I think it works brilliantly as a standalone. The tension, psychological twists, and cat-and-mouse chase had me hooked from start to finish. I can’t wait to go back and read Broken Bones to see where it all started

Although I enjoyed the writing style, the story itself fell a little flat for me. It seemed dragged out with too many murders. I get it. The modus operandi was repeated because it was that of the serial killer, but I felt all those murders we’re overkill (pun intended). I’m afraid I didn’t connect with any of the characters either. They didn’t seem personalized enough and were too dedicated to their work.
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review False Witness.

I enjoyed this crime novel immensely.
It is my first from this author and I certainly hope I will get to read more of his books.
Well thought out, chilling, fast paced.
I had a suspicion who The Embalmer was, and I was right.

I was gripped from the first page to the last.

I recommend.
4/5 stars from me.
