In the remote, snowbound wilderness of Oregon’s Eagle Cap Mountains, a sled dog race turns deadly. State Trooper Gabriel Hawke is teaching winter survival to Search and Rescue recruits when he's called in to find a missing musher. Arriving at the race camp, he discovers the musher isn’t just a name on a list—she’s someone his friend Justine cares about deeply.
As Hawke searches rugged trails and icy backcountry, the case quickly shifts from a rescue to a murder investigation. Then a second body turns up, and it’s clear the killer is hiding among the racers, handlers, or volunteers. The deeper Hawke digs, the more he uncovers buried secrets and dangerous rivalries.
Now, with a killer on the loose and Justine possibly in the crosshairs, Hawke must navigate blizzards, betrayal, and bloodshed—before the race ends in even more tragedy.
Paty Jager is an award-winning author of 55+ novels, novellas, and short stories of murder mystery, western romance, and action adventure. All her work has Western or Native American elements in them along with hints of humor and engaging characters. Paty and her husband raise alfalfa hay in rural eastern Oregon. Riding horses and battling rattlesnakes, she not only writes the western lifestyle, she lives it.
Book 14 in this wonderful series by Paty Jager. Paty writes so eloquently about the Native American Indian people, in particular Nez Pierce. It's so hard to put her books down.
This series features Gabriel Hawke, a Trooper with Wildlife, Fisheries and Food; usually, he is out, patrolling the mountains and hunting areas on foot or, more often with his animals, Horse and Dog. He's checking permits, maintaining law and order, and ensuring everyone's safety. However, he usually comes across a body or crime that needs solving.
This book is based around a dog sledding race. He is called in when a competitor is found murdered, and when he realises his good friend, Justine is another competitor and friend of the victim; he is concerned for her safety.
Whilst all the books in this series are standalone stories, they are best read in order of publication to preserve continuity of the characters and wider storyline. Lots of characters appear in every book. There's also his developing relationship hunting lodge owner Dani to keep up with.
If you like mysteries, especially with references to indigenous people included, then this is the author for you. Try her other series, Shandra Higheagle and The Spotted Pony Casino, both feature strong female lead characters, and are hard to put down, like this series is.
I can not wait for the next book by this author to be released, its one of only a few authors I buy, as soon as they release a new book.
Wolf Moon is an atmospheric, slow-burn mystery that had me hooked from the start. The sled dog race setting in Oregon’s Eagle Cap Mountains felt vivid and cinematic, I could practically feel the snow and isolation closing in. Gabriel Hawke’s resilience and quiet determination shine as he navigates both brutal terrain and the tangled web of rivalries, secrets, and betrayal that surface after the musher’s disappearance.
What I love most about Paty Jager’s writing is how authentic it feels, rooted in the Western lifestyle yet layered with suspense, heart, and humanity. By the time the second body dropped, I couldn’t put it down. A gripping, well-crafted addition to the Hawke series that proves why Jager’s mysteries stand out in a crowded genre.
Highly recommended for fans of survival thrillers, police procedurals, and mysteries that balance rugged grit with emotional depth.
I love this series and learn something new in each book. My heart went out to Justine (I felt like I knew her since she was in previous books) when her friend Bobbi’s life was taken at the Sled Dog Race. Luckily Gabriel Hawke was giving training nearby and was called in to investigate. I haven’t read any mystery books that included bob sled racing and this was so interesting. I love how Ms. Jager takes us through the investigation of the suspects and lets us try to determine who the culprits are. It was nice catching up with Dani and Gabriel’s relationship. I enjoy how they support each other. I strongly encourage you to read the book.
Gabriel Hawke has another murder mystery to solve. This time his friend Justine calls him to help find her friend. They were competing in a dogsled race and Bobbi went missing. This starts with a missing woman and ends with several murders. You do learn a lot about dog sledding and what happens in a race. I did not figure out the killer until the end. A good read even when you know Hawke would figure it out. I would recommend reading this book. I received an arc and the views and opinions are my own.
Another well written tale involving Hawke. Reading about the sled races and the conditions was really eye-opening, and I think it must a challenge for the participants and the organisers. The murder had many twists, which helped.
I received a copy from the author and voluntarily leave my review
I always love reading about Hawke & his sleuthing but this was so much fun leaving me trying to figure it out! Intertwining the family members was great! Not to mention learning about the inner workings of dog sled races! This was the best one yet in this series!
Patty once again wrote a really good Gabriel Hawke mystery. A young woman is killed, and then others start to die and Hawke has to find the killer and discover why they are being killed.
This was an entertaining, well-written book. It was suspenseful, interesting and kept me reading. I enjoyed book and look forward to reading more books in this series as well as others by this author.
