The Primal Sins Collection #2

Devoured: A Horror Romance

Rate this book
There was nothing left for me. Only judgment.

St. Dymphna's is where they lock up women like me. The ones who killed their husbands. The ones who won't stop screaming. The ones nobody wants to remember exist.

But this place is wrong. Something lives in these walls—something ancient and hungry.

Then I saw him. Eight feet of scarred muscle behind a metal mask. Red eyes that burn through the dark. A nightmare that shouldn't exist but does.

I was supposed to be another broken woman for the doctors to play with. Another meal for whatever feeds on guilt and madness here.

I should have been his perfect victim too.

But I didn't break.

I bit back.

And he saw something in that darkness—something that made him stop. Something that made him watch instead of strike.

Now in this asylum where something ancient demands its sacrifices, where a masked monster decides who lives and who dies—I'm learning that some prey are more dangerous than their predators.

Horror romance with a plus-size heroine, enemies-to-lovers. Asylum horror drowning in gore, feminine rage, and obsession.

HOLLLLYYYYY HELL!!! I need to start this out with *CHECK TRIGGER WARNINGS* & when I say check, check ALL of them- bc there’s a lot! That being said… I loved this book! Devoured is the ✨perfect✨ title bc that’s exactly what I did with it! Despite gore starting from page one, I NEEDED to know what happened next! I was so absorbed while simultaneously horrified basically the entire time. I was clutching my own body parts & everything! If you like DARK to the EXTREME- you’ll love this book. Also loved to see the Plus-Size & POC representation.

‘Devoured’ has unexpectedly become one of my favorite summer reads. Does that make me depraved? Quite possibly. Should I be concerned? pshh, I’m not worried about a bit of depravity sliding in with my numerous other shortcomings—too old and tired for worrying, besides it’s much more fun 😉

The FMC, Zahra, really has had a crap life, since her parents died. Other than trusting the wrong people, none of it is her fault. Every time she thinks there might be a crack of sunlight peaking through to her sad, gloomy life *BAM* their true depraved colors come through. Don’t even get me started on Dr Varnar. If ever there was a man deserving forced castra, well, it’s him.

Infinite. Fucking. Stars. WOW. 😩🙌

ARC REVIEW. This was extremely DARK. Do NOT ignore the trigger warnings, they’re there for a reason! This was such an emotional roller coaster, full of suspense and extreme horror. Everytime I thought I had figured out what was happening or where the story was going, I was wrong. Nothing could have prepared me for any of this and I will forever wonder how the author thought of any, if not all of this… The genius, the thought and the effort that was put into this… Wow. I DEVOURED this. Start to finish. There was no tearing me away from it. I’m upset that it’s over, I need more!

I often struggle to connect with the FMCs in books… However, I quickly and easily connected with Zahra from the very beginning. I love how she is in her late 30s, POC and plus size… But, just who she is as a person and what she has went through, and continues to go through… A lot of representation was shown in her character alone. I adored her!

The writing style was amazing, this flowed beautifully, the descriptions and details were done perfectly. Nothing was over explained or just thrown in without thought. It was always the perfect amount of descriptions to keep you pulled in. Nothing was ever boring! And as someone who, unfortunately, doesn’t “see” anything when they read and often times struggles to even picture a simple room in their head, this was SO well done to the point where I wasn’t left confused or wondering if I understood what was happening, or not understanding what was being described… This book was beautifully done. From the plot, to the characters, the representation, the details, the creativity and the writing…. Infinite stars and definitely a book I will never stop recommending.

Thank you so much Sephyrra for the ARC! 🖤🫶☺️

“I love your strength that you call weakness. Your survival that you call selfishness. Your scars that you call ugliness. I love the way you still try to save others when you can’t save yourself. I love you, Zahra. Not as a tool loves its purpose. As a man loves a woman.”
This quote, I just love everything about it!! I almost highlighted the entire book. It was so well written and memorable! I finished this book in two days! My average is six!! That is how absolutely enthralling the read was. We open with some heavy domestic abuse, after the tragic loss of the FMC parents and bounced from foster home to foster home, our lead is sentenced to an insane asylum. The trigger warnings are essential for this book. As a survivor of DV I found the narrator to be very accurate in her thoughts. To join her journey of survival to finding true love in the absolute most unexpected place in was a great happily ever after! The smut was well balanced for the horror and her love is the strong silent type. Made me even desire jumping into a bed made of the most disturbing material. This book had everything horror and smut readers want! The ending was ::chefs kiss:: amazing and unexpected for me. I highly recommend it!

It is so intriguing to find a book that is labelled as a horror romance, and that is exactly what drew me in to Devoured. This book is horrifying and so interesting that I was captured immediately! Definitely very dark and has quite a bit of gore, I strongly suggest checking content warnings prior to reading. That being said, I love the representation in this book (BIPOC/plus size), and I love some good feminine rage. I already have a healthy fear of institutionalization and how it can make someone feel powerless, so I was immediately on the edge of my seat. This book absolutely nailed the terror, the grotesque, and the depravity and evil. The author has a beautiful writing style even through the extreme horror, and also makes you feel connected to the main character and eager to see her win. There is definitely spice and also ends on a happily ever after, which left me feeling satisfied. If you want a wild ride then definitely read this one!

ARC REVIEW!

This is a novel that is part of a series and I do highly recommend reading the others! (They’re also great!). If monster romance is your thing, you’ll want to check out this author. As an avid mystery/ thriller enjoyer, I loved the creepy elements and the plot was thick with different deeper themes. The spice was moderate and as always, check the trigger warnings because your mental health matters! Bonus: the imagery was fantastic. If you love creepy and asylum vibes, you’ll like this one!

i already knew how this author writes like i’ve read all her books but my god when i get to the dark parts it always takes me aback. all her books are an instant read and i very much enjoyed this one. i would’ve been so upset if the 3 died cause i thought that they deserved so much happiness and they gladly did, tbh even though this book had its dark elements i feel like it’s one of the happiest endings from this series. and omg the art of zahra and flame after her transition😫 i loved it sm

ARC REVIEW
This book was insanely good I will say tho the first half was a bit slow some repetitive stuff and sentences that didn’t quite sound right but after 45% thru it gets crazy it’s very intense some very gut wrenching moments and I mean literally gut wrenching it also gives off silent hill vibes but more twisted crazy creatures nightmarish stuff happening definitely ruins your sleep 😂it was really good tho the ending was so good very deserved very good world building and character development. I give it 4/5 it’s heavy on the triggers tho so check that before reading. It’s also definitely not really a romance mostly horror

Devoured.
Gory, gruesome, grotesque.
A book like no other I’ve ever read.
Mixing horror and romance, Devoured delivers an elemental mix of Silent Hill, SuckerPunch, and American Horror Story if they were all directed by Rob Zombie. If you’re into a horror that will rob you of breath, with an underlying story of love, strength, and triumph, Devoured by Sephyrra needs to be your next read.

First and foremost, I must address triggers. This book is full of some of the darkest, most depraved, extremely disturbing content on the market. Those who are sensitive to abuse, DV, gore, and horror should check the warnings and be careful proceeding. Your safety and mental health matters more than anything else, so please take heed!

Now, onto the rest! Devoured, while dark and devastating, was beautifully and tragically written. Sephyrra truly took time developing and crafting each scene with such distinct precision, and it shows in every line of her novel. The descriptions are intense and lyrical, complex and comprehensive, all while completely annihilating readers with deeply angst-ridden, terrifying content. If ever a horror novel should be adapted to screen, this would be it.

Devoured… devoured me entirely. Perfect for horror lovers. Not for the faint of heart. Officially available today, August 28th!

‼️ This is a HORROR ROMANCE aka DARK DARK. PLZ BE KIND TO YOUR MIND & CHECK TWS!!!!🫶🏻 ‼️

Ummmmm, all I can say is WOW! I was not prepared at all. Devoured is set in an asylum full of trauma, secrets, torture, rituals, obsession, and darkness. Make sure to check all your warnings because it is DARK and twisted. Just when I thought I had it figured out where it was going, nope, I was wrong and it shifted. I gave off American Horror Story vibes and I couldn’t get enough.

Zahra is in her 30s, plus size, and a survivor of domestic violence. She is institutionalized in St. Dymphna Institute for getting revenge on her husband, but this place is not what it seems. Zahra keeps having dreams of her dead husband and of a dark demon in a mask, The Executioner.

I don’t want to go into too much, but the secrets and darkness…wow it was done so beautifully. It was twisted and layer out so well. The buildup of the story, the characters, giving little tidbits just to make you wonder and think. It’s full of suspense, erotic horror, extreme horror, and pure hell.

And the story of Zahra and The Executioner..I loved it!!!! It the chaos and darkness of it, she found just her happiness and love. I love feminine rage and when they get their revenge!

Devoured by Sephyrra

Wow. I’m glad the author called this a horror romance, I would be more inclined to call it erotic splatter-punk romance (but that’s just my opinion.) I found the ending chapters to be the more passionate within the story and the writing itself. I suppose it helps in whatever life we are living to believe that redemption can come in some form.
I think the supporting characters were the key to making this novel enjoyable. Each representing something we are all guilty at different times and to different degrees in our life. The strength and resilience of her “family” and the cruelty and oppression of her tormentors made the novel.
As for the MFC, at times I wanted to either strangle her or hug her. I know she was meant to have a lot of baggage but I didn’t need to be reminded of her physical attributes quite so often. She was heard and understood the first time. I found the portrayal of the MMC mentally endearing. I just couldn’t picture them together physically in my head.
There was one issue with the (?) editing that drove me beyond reason. I can understand capitalization of full words occasionally but not complete sentences and not for pages. I understand the author was trying to provoke power, anger and fear but it just made me feel like I was watching a text fight between two people. I did not like it.
I think the book is worth reading if nothing but for the ending. It was touching and revealed the crux of this book. If there is one thing I took from this novel that the author so eloquently wrote; there is pain in the absolute truth.

Synopsis: Found not guilty by reason of insanity, Zahra is admitted into a psychiatric institute. Soon, otherworldly visions begin to plague her, as does the tormenting ghost of her dead husband. Is she really losing her mind, or is some dark force at work in this facility? Should she fear the Doctors and Orderlies, or something far more sinister? Or maybe all of the above?

(This is an extremely dark read)

My Review:
I’m so glad I had the opportunity to read an ARC for this one! It is a horror romance so there are very sensitive topics and graphic depictions! (I’ll list some warnings at the end) I was confused as to what Zahra was seeing in her visions, but as the story goes along, it’s explained little by little. This is a story where you’re trapped in a mental institute and have no say over what’s done to your mind or body. No way to stop the horror and perversions of sick twisted minds. But there’s more at play than just evil humans. And you’re wondering just who will make it out alive. - FYI, it does get a bit spicy towards the end, between a human and something not so human.

Spice level: 2.5/5

- FMC that’s curvy, Pakistani/American, and becomes a strong bada$$.

I was captivated from the first page. This is a dark read. Zahra goes through so much before she gets her happily ever after. I’m happy that she and the others got their revenge and peace. I love the strength that Zahra has and that she grows to realize she was never weak or selfish. I love this book but please read the triggers and know that it is a HORROR romance.

When it said dark horror romance this book really meant it! Make sure you check the trigger warnings! They are there for a reason! This book was so good. Zahara really did not have a good life. When she was at her lowest it somehow got lower. She really had a lot to overcome in this book. I absolutely loved her found family and who she became. The plot was so good. Every time I thought things couldn't get wilder somehow you did it. I could not put it down! Can't wait for the next book! Thank you so much @authorsephyrra

I'm not new to this author and can not express how much I love and enjoy her books. This book is extremely dark and descriptive. It seriously makes me feel like I am there. I love how her characters don't fit in a box they are all different and you never know what will happen. I'm so happy the book ended the way it did because I got real worried towards the end there. There was a part that literally almost ripped my heart out. If you are into dark horror romance then I seriously suggest you read this book but read the trigger warnings first!

This is dark make sure you read triggers if you have any. This was a great book. I was drawn into the characters pain from the beginning. In this story everyone has pain some are innocent a lot are not. The question is how do you decide who is innocent or guilty, and what made them make the decisions they did.

Amazing! I truly loved this book and I recommend it wherever I go because it was truly spectacular. I read a lot of books, like 1 every 1-2 days, and a lot of them feel the same. Well, this one doesn't! It was refreshingly new, deliciously dark and creepy yet sweet at the same time.

It's trigger-heavy, so definitely check the list if you have any triggers, but the HEA is really worth it!

This was a captivating and suspenseful horror filled novel. The author made it very easy to connect with the characters and want to seek redemption as much as they wanted it. I enjoyed the concept of guilt and sin and justice and how it should be given. This was a perfect read for this spooky season.

Why does society so easily avert its eyes from domestic violence, only to bare its teeth at women who finally strike back after years of torment? I don’t condone killing, but how can we not feel sympathy for women like Zahra, who live in prisons of fists, terror, and silence until something inside them finally shatters? However, her punishment is not freedom, but St. Dymphna’s Asylum, a place that pulses like a festering wound. From the moment Zahra crosses its threshold, the book plunges from grim reality into nightmare. The asylum looms like a rotting cathedral, its walls slick with whispers and shadows that seem to bleed. The air itself feels corrupted, as though breathing it will hollow you out from the inside. But once its true purpose is revealed, I found myself strangely relieved. I could lean into the depravity, the grotesque “treatments” and the extreme violence precisely because it was so surreal. One of the first moments that truly made my skin crawl was Zahra’s hallucinations of her dead husband, Theo. The horror wasn’t just in his gruesome state, but in the way he clung to her psyche, tormenting her even from beyond the grave and she was powerless to escape him. But Theo’s specter is nothing compared to what waits in the asylum’s bowels. Here, the body is both plaything and sacrament. Flesh is carved and flayed. There were moments that reminded me of Hellraiser, especially the Sanctified: priests of mutilation, draped in gore, their faith etched into their very skin. That’s not a criticism; it’s high praise. Clive Barker is one of my all-time favorite authors and Sephyrra’s imagination is every bit as wild and pitched in the darkest registers. Reading those scenes was like staring into a pit lined with teeth. The horror is relentless, blood pooling in the cracks of the asylum’s floor, screams echoing like hymns, the air heavy with copper and rot. The sense of helplessness is suffocating; no one is coming, no savior will step through the door. For the women trapped here, the asylum is both prison and tomb. And still, Zahra endures. Battered, haunted, stripped of almost everything, she refuses to break. There’s a savage beauty in her survival, her will cutting through the darkness like a blade. It makes her a character both terrifying and triumphant. This novel is not for the faint-hearted. It’s horror with claws, horror that gnashes bone and spits blood. A grotesque, visceral feast for fans who like their nightmares vivid and dripping. There are moments of romance woven through the carnage, strange and tender in its defiance, proving that even in hell’s darkest corners, something human still beats within the monster’s ribcage. For horror devotees, this is pure ecstasy. A banquet of blood, madness, and the resilience of a woman who refuses to lie down and die quietly.
