The Calypso Enigma: A Billy Firebrand Adventure

Rate this book
A missing scientist, a lost bioweapon, and just one flimsy lead…

Billy Firebrand and his dysfunctional crew of mercenaries are on the trail of the greatest mystery they've ever faced. Only when they arrive on the resort world of Calypso, expecting to find some answers, they uncover nothing but more questions.

Now, both the ship and the crew are coming apart at the seams, and it's all Billy can do to keep them together while somehow tracking down one of the deadliest weapons ever devised.

Fans of The Worst Ship in the Fleet and Rogue Agent will love this new series full of swashbuckling adventure, witty banter, and plenty of sci-fi fun. Tag along with this crew of has-beens as they redefine what it means to be heroes (and not always in a good way). Set in the fan-favorite universe of Dumb Luck and Dead Heroes, you don't need to have read that series to fully enjoy this action-packed series.

About the author

Skyler Ramirez

54 books152 followers
Skyler grew up in Southern California, under the best weather that state has to offer. So, he's shown a little of his insanity over the years in moving to colder, wetter places: New York City; Provo, Utah; Bainbridge Island, WA. He now resides with his family in Texas, which (apart from the humidity) gives him that great weather once again.

Skyler has been and continues to be a leader and executive with multiple Fortune 500 and Fortune 1000 companies, working across a variety of functions, both technical and non-technical. In other words, he's very much a jack-of-all-trades but master of none. Maybe that's why he has now decided to be an author as well. In it, he’s finally found the thing he loves to do most.

Mr. Ramirez currently resides in Texas with his wife, Lindsey, and their four children.

Billy Firebrand (not to be confused with his writer and movie-star father with the same name), was a good soldier; an excellent mercenary, and after saving up, and gathering a decent crew, he bought a ship and went into business for himself.

Although the crew was a bit rough around the edges, and arguments were common, their loyalty to Billy was never to be questioned. Especially El's. Beautiful, graceful, deadly, and convinced that Billy was in love with her, he just wasn't sure of it yet.

Teddy, Billy's former girlfriend, had good reason to be concerned...because their secret daughter--who was hidden for her protection--was being threatened. Their biggest nightmare.

Now, working under the threat of a notorious information broker, and forced to work for royalty (a princess and former friend), Billy and his team search for information on an inhospitable ocean world while Teddy goes to retrieve their unhappy daughter. There is more than enough danger for everyone, and no one comes out of this unscathed or unchanged!

There is a lot going on in this book, and I'm honestly surprised I didn't get confused or lost with the viewpoint changing as often as it does. This is one of those rare authors (and books) able to pull it off easily!

I enjoy the humor, especially the henchmen and various levels of thugs, and learning more about the different characters as they see themselves (and each other).

Skyler Ramirez writes clean scifi that is highly entertaining; full of action and humor, and characters you'll remember! He's one of my new favorites!

Captain Firebrand and his team of mercenaries are still looking for the missing weapon and scientist, when they are coerced into taking another mission, to find the architect. Trapped on a SolFed ship under water, the team are separated with communications blocked, they must complete the mission and save the ship's passengers. Good book, with a mixed band of characters.

Humor and fun adventure with distinctive characters who each have their own skill set, strengths and weaknesses. This one also has an environmental background that plays into the plot and action. El in particular shines in this one. The plot, twists and detail, characterizations all come together quite well. I highly recommend this book and series.

Five stars. It's like reading about the A-Team set in the world of Guardians of the Galaxy. Fast paced and fun, a real page turner like all of Skyler's works. I thoroughly enjoyed it and can't wait for the next installment in the Dumb Lunch and Dead Heroes universe.

But book. Read book. Read all of Skyler Ramirez's books. That way he will write more for us to read. That is how this works.
