Our dark family secret has finally caught up to me.
For years, I’ve made it my priority to deliver justice and bring down those who prey on the weak. The shifty landlords, deceitful realtors, and dirty politicians in New Rothwick cannot hide from me. As an investigative reporter with a special ability for getting people to talk, my life has been good. Until the evening I find out I’m not human.
My biological father is missing, and my mother wants me to dive into the underbelly of the city to help find him. I’m falling in love with my best friend, but he is struggling with a crushing reality that could permanently tear us apart. And now, a full-blooded fae warrior with smoldering eyes and a royal attitude has me second-guessing my entire existence.
I never thought the truth could hurt so much. The city I know and love is a lie—my safe and simple world gone. There are others like me out there and finding them may be the key to getting the answers I need. But while staying away from a mystery is hard, am I ready to sacrifice all that makes me human to trust in a world I never knew?

A title like Daughter of the Fae conjures up a certain picture in your mind. You think fantasy maps with hard to pronounce names, intricate magic systems, ethereally green and lush lands, kings and queens, and otherworldly beings. What you do not expect is an opening with an investigative journalist using an informant to catch a slumlord builder with his pants down (literally) to blackmail him into paying the people back that invested in his non-existent building. But you know what? I am here for it! A.L. Garr gets all the points for an unexpected opening that got me totally sunk in on this book! Sosie is tasked with finding her father. Not the one she thought she had, but the one her mother finally reveals to her after 25 years. Sosie starts to unravel just who this man is, and what he is. She finds out more about her heritage as she tries to find there’s a different world living within that one she’s always called home. Putting her investigative journalism skills to work, she’s sure she can find her father and exactly why he disappeared.
Part fantasy, part mystery and a whole lot of found family (and in the strangest places). I loved each and every character in this book. The relationships here are where A.L. Garr excels, there’s the right amount of push and pull, and even skepticism. (There is also nothing I love more than the fae in the mortal world trope. Yes, I know it’s silly but it will never not be funny to me. Take what you will from that.)
I have but one bone to pick with you, author A.L. Garr… that needed to be longer! I was having such a good time and then, it was over! More, please!
Daughter of the Fae is available on Oct 21.

Did I completely devour this book in one day? Yes. Was it a beautiful story about a girl whose life gets turned upside down after finding out her family secret? Also yes. I absolutely loved the friends to lovers dynamic and didn’t think any of it strayed away from the plot. All of it, from beginning to end, was fast paced and descriptive. The world building had me sat from the very beginning. I’m so excited to see where the story goes in the next book. Thank you to the author and The Nerd Fam for the gifted eARC!
Sosie, our FMC, is an investigative reporter who seems to always get the answers she needs. She is finishing up a case with her coworker, who happens to be her best friend, when she receives a frantic call from her mother. When she arrives to her parents’ home she is bombarded with the truth that her father is not actually her father. To make matters worse, her real father is now missing. Sosie’s mother is devastated. So much so, that Sosie feels obligated to solve this mystery and find a man she has never met. During her investigations, Sosie continues to uncover more secrets. Magical creatures and other worlds exist: Fae, Trolls, Vampires, etc. They all band together to help find Gil, Sosie’s real father.
This book is advertised as a “friends to lovers” but I don’t enjoy it. I feel that Sosie and Tris are just using each other as a coping mechanism. I also felt that there was a lot of build up to figuring out where Gil was, but when it came down to it, the situation was resolved relatively quickly. Nevertheless, I was intrigued so I will continue to follow this series.
I think I have found a new auto buy author and I don’t say that lightly!
This was not what I was expecting, in all the best ways. This perfectly blended the best elements of urban fantasy and more classic fantasy and I was absolutely eating it up.
In the beginning you meet our fmc Sosie, who is an investigative reporter addicted to exposing the corrupt leadership in her city. She does it and does it well, alongside her best friend Tris. You can tell she is a sucker for a good mystery, and what’s more she has an uncanny ability to unravel them.
It’s not long before Sosie’s comfortable familiarity is turned on its head, and she finds out her true father is fae, making her a halfling, and exposing her to an alternate reality she thought only existed in movies and books. Her fae father is missing and her mother begs her to use her unique skill set to discover what happened to him.
So she sets out on a mission to solve this new mystery, discovering more about the other half of her heritage along the way. Accompanied by Tris(who is battling with his own set of newly discovered secrets that change the way he views himself), and Wyelin, a full blooded fae who has inserted himself into the human world and Tris and Sosie’s investigation, Sosie embarks on a fast paced, high stakes adventure that will have you holding your breath as you read as fast as you can to find out what comes next!
This is betrayal and secrets, amazing world building and a unique collection of magical creatures, a dash of political intrigue and shady fae court navigation, while also being chock full of the most intense murder mystery vibes.
I feel like this book is hard to classify and put in a box, but this author has created something totally unique and all its own that will leave you clamoring for the next installment!
I cannot wait to go dive into her full catalog of books because the way she pulls you into a story and keeps a tight hold on you until the end is exactly what I crave as a reader. And while suffering from severe lack of sleep, (thanks so much A.L. Garr!), I can confidently say I have zero regrets!!
I didn’t expect this book to hit me the way it did. I picked it up thinking cute fae vibes, a little magic, a little chaos… and suddenly I’m emotionally invested, clutching the paperback like it owes me rent, and whispering “don’t you dare” at certain characters.
There’s just something about this story — the way the magic feels old and alive, like it’s watching you. The way the main character goes from quietly existing to realizing she is so much more, even when the world keeps trying to shrink her. Her growth felt raw and real, and honestly… I needed that reminder that softness doesn’t mean weakness.
And the fae? Listen. I am weak for morally-gray, sharp-smiled, “I’ll ruin the world for you but also maybe ruin you” energy. This book fed me well. Slow burn, soft tension, that “I shouldn’t trust you but here we are and I’m already gone” feeling — obsessed.
Also, the forest setting? Peak cozy fantasy. Moss, moonlight, whispers in the dark, the pretty kind of danger that makes your stomach drop in the best way.
I finished this book feeling a little enchanted and a little wrecked — in the nicest, “I need to go sit quietly and process my feelings with tea and fairy lights” way.
⭐ 5 stars If you love cozy magic with sharp edges, secret heritage, and romance that sneaks up on you… this one belongs on your shelf
ARC Review – Daughter of the Fae by A.L. Garr ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice 🌶️.5
Crescent City meets Heir of Fire in the best possible way in this new series from A. L. Garr!
Daughter of the Fae by A.L. Garr is a gripping fantasy romance that pulls you into a world where magic, fae, trolls, and vampires live just beneath the surface of a modern city. The story follows Sosie, an investigative journalist who’s always had a knack for getting people to talk—a talent she chalks up to charm…that is until she discovers there’s much more to her than meets the eye. Her journey from “normal” human to uncovering her hidden heritage is filled with action, heart, and a healthy dose of witty banter.
Garr’s world-building is vivid and immersive—the city of New Rothwick gave me major Midgard vibes, with a magical undercurrent that feels both fresh and familiar. Sosie is a standout lead: witty, sharp, and uniquely her own. Her friendship with Tris (her loyal cameraman and partner-in-crime) is a solid emotional anchor throughout the story, and I’m eager to learn more about him in future books. Wylen, a full-blooded fae trying to navigate New Rothwick after being sent to help Sosie find out her true nature, brought humor and heart to the narrative. Wylen’s adjustment to city living had me genuinely laughing.
If you’re a fan of authors like Sarah J. Maas, Holly Roberds, or Victoria Aveyard, this one should be on your radar. With captivating storytelling, likable characters, and a strong foundation for what promises to be an exciting series, Daughter of the Fae is a must-read for fantasy romance lovers. If you like fronds-to-lovers, dangerous politics and deducing a bigger conspiracy, this one is for you!
Thank you @thenerdfam and for the gifted copy of Daughter of the Fae by A.L. Garr #thenerdfam #daughterofthefae
I really enjoyed myself. The world building and the characters are wonderful. Ugh. I love a good friends to lovers. Sosie and Tris are so good together. I’m excited to see how everything develops in the next story!
I recommend this to people who love the friends to lovers trope, investigating/reporting, and the magical world of fae and other creatures.
-different realms -friends to lovers -investigative reporter -supernatural world
Journalist discovered she is part Fae by her missing dad and goes on a quest to find him, the concept is intrigueing and storyline has great potential however I did find the storyline to be a little jumpy and not smoothly transitioned at times. I enjoyed the witty bantering between the characters and author had a great description of unique characters throughout this book. Thank you to The Nerd Fam for the gifted eARC. #daughterofthefae #thenerdfam
I think my favorite part of this book is the world building that was done by the author. I loved it, the depth and amount of effort that was put into it is definitely reflected in this book. I definitely enjoyed reading this book, and recommend giving it a go if it sounds up your alley.
Daughter of the Fae is an imaginative and promising start to a new fantasy series that blends magic, mystery, and modern-day intrigue. The story follows Sosie, an investigative journalist whose search for answers leads her to uncover a hidden heritage tied to the fae, trolls, and other magical beings living just beneath the surface of a modern city.
The world-building is vivid and immersive, with strong Crescent City vibes, though the pacing starts a bit slower before picking up as secrets unravel. Once the action begins, the witty banter and dynamic between Sosie, Tris, and Wylen bring both humor and heart to the story.
While it didn’t quite have the fast-paced intensity I usually prefer in romantasy, it’s a compelling read with a lot of potential and definitely a good book if new to fantasy. The ending set up plenty of intrigue, and I’ll definitely be continuing the series to see what happens next.
Read this if you like: 👩❤️👨 Friends to lovers 👫 Found family 🧝♀️Modern worlds with hidden magic ✨ Witty banter and light mystery
If you enjoy stories that blend contemporary settings with fae mythology and heart-filled character dynamics, Daughter of the Fae is a great fantasy to add to your list.
Thank you to A.L. Garr and The Nerd Fam for the gifted eARC. #daughterofthefae #thenerdfam
I want more. I’m glad to have been able to read this as an arc. It was enjoyable. I was hoping for more twists in the plot but perhaps this first book was more of a world building thing. The characters were likable and it had some banter between them.
3.75 rounded up. I was hooked from the beginning. I love the way the world building and lore was done. This felt like a huge setup for more, ACOTAR anyone?? This starts as an urban fantasy but expands to other worlds with your more traditional magical plane which I can not wait to see more of.
The writing could be a bit more polished but it didn’t stop me from devouring this. Book 2 coming 2026
To be frank, I don't like Tris. Daughter of the Fae is billed as a friends to lovers and I don't think Tristan is a good friend at nearly any point in the story. He's never there when Sosie needs him, he disappoints her over and over again, they fight over ridiculous things and to be honest the sex is mediocre at best. He can't do anything of the things she's asked if him like not bicker with Wylen, he can't delay his fights with razi even though it doesn't seem like there's a time limit on the offer for what he needs to know and Sosie is in the middle of hunting for her missing father. Honestly I could rant all day about what a bad friend Tris is and how their relationship doesn't make sense. Especially the scene where he tells her, in public, what an embarrassment she is. She should have left him and refused to speak to him again. The rest of the book is decent. The mystery of what's going on is intriguing and how it plays out is well done. Just because I don't like a character doesn't mean the book is bad. It doesn't even mean the character is poorly written. Although because of things said by Wylen I am not sure if this series is meant to become a love triangle, a reverse harem, or what? It's a bit confusing in that aspect.
All things being said, it's still a great mystery and I want to keep finding out what happens next. I am glad Nerdfam sent me this ARC because I'll keep reading the series.
This was an ARC read for me and omg—I ate it up! 🔥 Daughter of the Fae pulled me in from page one. Our fierce investigative reporter finds out she’s not human 👀 and gets thrown into a world of fae politics, missing family, and two men who’ve completely stolen my heart 😭. It’s got friends-to-lovers, danger, and magic—the perfect mix for a fantasy romance binge. I already need book two!! 🖤✨
(For my rating system if I finish a book, it starts off at 3 anything lower would just be a DNF for me)
This book wasn't bad, and it was a really cool concept, but I was just left wanting more. 1) there was no world building at all and while the world doesn't play much if any part in the story line, I was curious bc there were some indicators that it was not our world in some key differences. 2) there was no buildup to anything in this book from the storyline, conflicts or romance. It just happened and then we moved on. So, it just felt like everything was glazed over or just accepted. Like this girl finds out the man she thought was her father is not her father and then she finds out the fae exist and she just accepts it in a blase nature that I felt warranted a deeper reaction and more time questioning things bc your world was just changed on two fronts and she just accepted it and moved on. 3) continuing on from the previous point about the lack of buildup this carried over to the romance as well. Now the romance in the book wasn't the main focus of the story this is more focused on finding the fae father she just found out about that. That's not an issue but bc there was no buildup to anything I just didn't believe in the romance at all, and the two MCs just had no romantic chemistry. This is a friends to lovers and them definitely are friends but sometimes their friendship also felt like a sibling relationship bc she worries about him and it felt like a sister worrying over the funny little brother. At one point she talks about how he is her best friend and she could never see them together but then in like a chapter or two they are randomly kissing, and they are in love with each other. The romance just made no sense 4) Tris himself I did not like for some parts of this book. At moments he seems like the funny little brother kind of friend but then as the book progressed he kinda seemed like a dude bro who is starting to fall down some weird pipeline. After they kiss he starts to get really weird and possessive over her with one of the other characters who is a fae but didn't give any indication that he or even Sosasia are interested in one another. But like every chance she is alone with the fae guy or interacts with him he acts like a jelous boyfriend when she is just helping out this guy who is out of his depth in the human world and is helping to find her father. He also finds out he is part troll and that seems to be where the possessive and kinda aggressive nature comes out like someone who finds out something about their heritage and now they have to live up to some stereotype of that aspect that is in contrast to who they were previously. He suddenly signs up for underground fighting (which includes to the death fights) and working for this sketchy guy who tells him the history of trolls, and he takes it as gospel and not saying this isn't how trolls were treated but this is the person who you want to get your information from and not verify it. Once he found that out, he also seems to resent Sosasia for being half Fae as well as the other Fae character who yea was a jerk at times to him for being a troll, but he was able to brush it off until he learned more history from this guy. I also didn't like that he yelled at her that he was sick about how everything was focused on finding her missing father. Like umm priorities we want to find the missing person when there is a strong possibility he has been murdered. Not saying ur thing isn't an issue but it's not as time sensitive as well as that was the whole point of what they were doing at that point. You don't agree to help find someone and then get mad that you spend all this time looking for that someone. Even when you might be dealing with something on your own. I just didn't enjoy the MMC and I don't like how later on it was suggested for Sosaia to keep her mental facilities intact after visiting the FAE world she needed to cling to her love of this man to keep her grounded. Just the combination gave me a bit of an ICK.
Overall, this was just not the book for me.
----
This book is about Sosasia who has made it her career as an investigated reporter or go after those who think they are untouchable and take advantage of those weaker than them. She has just always had a knack for getting these criminals to talk and be honest with her. At least she thought it was a knack but when she finds out not only is the man she thought was her father not her father but her real father is not even human! What he is, is a fae which means that she is a halfling and she has his ability of persuasion. But before she can confront this man she finds out he is missing and her mother wants her help finding him because that is what she does best. So, with her best friend they dive into the underbelly of the city trying to uncover what happened not just to her father but also uncover more about the world they just discovered they are a part of. Because one way or another she is going to get to the bottom of this mystery and uncover the truth no matter how much it hurts.
I received an ARC Copy in exchange for an honest review.
No matter how I thought this story would go… I was wrong! 😭 That ending completely blindsided me — I need the sequel now! 💀💔
💫 Daughter of the Fae by A.L. Garr is an imaginative, emotional, and gripping start to a fantasy romance series that blends magic, mystery, and modern-day intrigue. 🌙✨ It pulls you into New Rothwick — a city where fae, trolls, and vampires live just beneath the surface — and it’s every bit as dangerous as it is enchanting.
🗞️ Sosie, an investigative journalist with a knack for getting people to talk, thought she had life figured out. But when she discovers she’s not human and her father is missing, her world turns upside down. 🧚♀️💔 Her journey from ordinary to extraordinary is full of danger, witty banter, and moments that made my heart ache.
🌃 The world-building was vivid and gave me major Crescent City vibes! 🏙️ The pacing started slow but once the secrets began unraveling, I was hooked. The fae politics, hidden magic, and dark conspiracies kept me turning pages late into the night.
💞 The characters made the story shine. Sosie’s friendship with Tris 🥹💖 — loyal, teasing, supportive — gave me major found family feels. Wylen, the full-blooded fae warrior with smoldering eyes 👀🔥 and a royal attitude, brought humor and heart to the story. Their dynamic? Chef’s kiss. 😌✨
⚔️ While it wasn’t the fastest-paced romantasy, it had so much heart and huge potential. That ending?? Pure chaos and perfection. I’m so ready for book two! 😭🙌

Huge shoutout to the nerdfam for the gifted eARC in exchange for my honest review! I had a lot of fun with this one and gave it a 4 star rating!
What can I say about Daughter Of The Fae? How about we start with the fact that this isn’t just your normal fantasy story. This story starts off following our FMC, named Sosie who is an investigative journalist who is working with informants to catch and blackmail a corrupt builder into paying back the people that he wronged. It’s safe to say that this start alone was enough to catch my attention and made me even more curious as to how the whole fae situation will come into play. My questions were answered when Sosie’s mother asked her for help in finding her father..but it’s not the man she thought was her father. It turned out her true father is a man named Gil who isn’t a normal human. As it turns out, Sosie discovered she is what is known as a halfling and is put on the case to find her missing fae father. Along the way she received help from Wylen and Tris and is on an adventure where she discovers different mythical creatures along the way.
I will stop there to avoid any spoilers for future readers of this book! However this story was definitely a new take on the normal fantasy worlds that I always read about so I was very curious the entire time. The chapters weren’t really long and honestly it was just so much fun reading this story. One of my favorite characters is definitely Wylen. Seeing his personality and how he is trying to get used to the normal human world made me smile and laugh each time. As only being book 1, it definitely made me curious enough to want to read the next book in the series. I’m really hoping for more world building as we get into the fae lands and I am curious to see what other characters are possibly out there, waiting for their time to shine.
Daughter of the Fae is an instant classic for anyone who loves high stakes fantasy mixed with truly agonizing friends to lovers romance. A.L. Garr has created a world that feels both gritty and breathtakingly magical, and I was completely hooked from the first page until the very last. If you’re looking for a book with deep world building and explosive character chemistry, this is it.
The dynamic between the two leads is what makes this book shine. The FMC, an astute investigative reporter, is easily one of the most compelling protagonists I've read this year. Her sharp wit and relentless determination to uncover the truth about her missing father and her own suddenly revealed fae heritage drive the entire plot.
Watching the FMC transform from a skeptical human into a powerful fae halfling is a journey filled with genuine emotion and satisfying growth.
Equally engaging is the MMC. As the FMC's best friend and now romantic interest, the MMC's internal struggle with the crushing new reality is incredibly well written. He is the perfect blend of protective, loyal, and complex. The chemistry between the FMC and the MMC is palpable; their established history adds beautiful layers of tension to the friends to lovers trope, making every glance and shared moment feel earned and powerful.
Beyond the romance, the plot surrounding the dangerous fae politics and the mystery of the missing father is intricate and fast paced. Garr skillfully weaves together the urban setting with the hidden supernatural underbelly. The search that the FMC and MMC undertake to find the truth is full of unexpected turns, found family, and genuine danger.
I cannot wait to dive back into The Forgotten Lands and see what happens next for the FMC and the MMC as they continue to learn about themselves and fight a greater conspiracy. This is a must read!
Daughter of the Fae was a fast-paced and entertaining read that kept me turning the pages, but it’s also one of those books that really would’ve benefited from a strong developmental editor. There’s a lot of potential here — great energy, some beautiful lines, and a handful of side characters who genuinely stand out — but the execution doesn’t always live up to the ideas.
The city setting is a good example of that. It feels like the author wanted to create a new urban fantasy world. However, it ultimately reads like a forced version of a brand-new city heavily influenced by reality, with a few fantasy flourishes layered on top. It would have made far more sense to ground it as a near-New York–type setting (like The Wren in the Holly Library does) rather than trying to reinvent something that still behaves like the real world.
Sosie, the main character, is likable enough and easy to root for, but her development feels rushed. She adapts to her new reality and powers with lightning speed, and her relationships move even faster. There are also moments (like references to her being a future queen) that don’t fully connect with the rest of the storyline, which left me a little confused.
That said, I did genuinely enjoy reading it. The writing has flashes of genuine beauty, with some lovely imagery and turns of phrase that demonstrate Garr's talent. The pacing is brisk, the action fun, and the side characters often outshine the protagonist in the best way.
If you’re looking for a quick, engaging fantasy with a dash of fae magic and don’t mind a few rough edges, Daughter of the Fae is worth a read. But it’s also a book that feels like a strong second draft — full of promise, but not quite polished enough to really shine.
If Nancy Drew was the daughter of a Fae you’d get Sosie and I’m obsessed with her. Sosie is an investigative reporter who works along side her best friend Tris uncovering all secrets of the corrupt her town. She never fails to get the scoop and her next case will be her most important one. Following her most recent case she gets a frantic phone call from her mother that her dad is missing and that’s when her mother whole world is flipped upside down. While secrets and true identities are revealed she meets some interesting new friends who will help unravel it all. Among them is Wylen, a hunter for the fae who has been sent by the Queen of the fae herself to track down Sosie’s missing father.
This book was such a good time and from the opening line A.L Garr had me hooked. A friends to lovers Romantasy that gives us betrayal, secret identities, mysteries, and some unlikely friendships. The Daughter of the Fae had me bouncing up in down with giddiness every time I recapped what I had just read to my poor husband. It was such a fresh new spin on a Fae story that had me not wanting to put it down while also not wanting it to end. The Nancy Drew, mysteries, lover in me could not get enough. I will definitely be reading whatever Garr puts out, but I’m especially excited for the books to follow this one. I need more Sosie, more Tris, and more Wylen asap.
This story is a standalone Romantasy in a new interconnected series and it is now available everywhere. Oct 21,2025
Thank you so much A.L Garr for the opportunity to be one of your early readers and a copy of this beautiful book. I’m hooked!
-different realms -friends to lovers -investigative reporter -supernatural world -found family - high stakes adventure
I really enjoyed myself. The world building and the characters are wonderful. I ate this book up! Our FMC finds out her family’s secret and her life gets turned upside down. This fast paced adventure was perfect. I love a good friends to lovers. Sosie and Tris are so good together. I can’t wait to see what happens next!
In the beginning we meet our fmc Sosie, who is an investigative reporter addicted to exposing the corrupt leadership in her city. She does it with passion and is very good at it, alongside with her best friend Tris. You can tell she is a sucker for a good mystery, and what's more she has an uncanny ability to unravel them. It's not long before Sosie's finds out that her father that raised her is not her father. But her true father is fae, making her a halfling, and exposing her to an alternate reality she thought only existed in movies and books. Her fae father is missing and her mother begs her to use her unique skill set to discover what happened to him. So Sosie sets out on a mission to solve this new mystery, discovering more about the other half of her heritage along the way. Accompanied by her best friend Tris who is battling with his own set of newly discovered secrets that change the way he views himself), and Wyelin, a full blooded fae who has inserted himself into the human world. Sosie journeys on a fast paced, adventure that changes the course of her life, that will have you holding your breath as you read. This is full of betrayal and secrets, amazing world building and a unique magical creatures, a dash of political intrigue and shady fae court navigation, while also full of the most intense murder🔪 mystery vibes.
Daughter Of The Fae strongly reminds me of when Sookie Stackhouse finds out about her ancestry and a not so great attempt at replicating the shadow hunters dynamic. With a splash of Edward and Jacob level "you stink" between one guy and another.
The dynamic between Sosasia (MFC) and Tris (MMC) was great for around about 2 minutes when he started acting like a jealous *ss! If you've been best friends forever and don’t trust her then what are you even doing!?! And I mean he agrees to do this job with her KNOWING what the job is about and then does nothing but treat her like a lime light hog. And seriously… an MMC that verbally abuses the MFC in public no less! With no real/healthy conflict resolution is NOT what we want in a best friends to lovers. If my guy best friend verbally abused me like that I'd delete his phone number and we've been friends for 24 years. Long story short, it would be better without Tris.
The writing/storyline feels very lower N/A. There is violence and sexual scenes but the story seems to be aimed at younger adults. It reminds me Quite a bit of wattpad stories. But with how realistically toxic Tris and Sosias relationship is, I wouldn't want to recommend it to a young impressionable adult that might think that it's an ideal relationship dynamic.
How this instalment ended makes me think of Feyre, Rhys & Tamlin which makes me slightly curious about book 2, She really should see what's up with Princey!
I read this as an arc from The Nerd Fam - As you can probably tell, I give honest reviews.
This book was one of those junk food books that isn't the best book ever written, but it's a good time and I couldn't put it down.
Sosie is an investigative journalist who has had a crush on her best friend Tris for a while now. One day she goes to see her mom and her world is turned upside down. Her dad isn't her biological dad, and her bio dad is a Fae that has recently gone missing. Sosie gets put on the case of trying to find out what happened to her dad.
This book gave all of the early 2000s sitcom vibes. It was a fun romantasy that didn't take itself too seriously. There was some spice, but the romance is very insta-love feeling since the reader is told these two have been friends for a while but we never see the friendship. They hook up very early on in this story so there isn't that build up that I personally love in romance stories. There is some romance drama with the addition of another man, but Sosie doesn't give him any attention and Tris is just jealous. I enjoyed it, but the romance felt more of an after thought than necessary to the plot.
The mystery is what made this book so fun for me! Watching Sosie get thrown into this new world she knows nothing about and use her investigative journalist skills to try and find her bio dad who shes never met was such an interesting premise and I enjoyed watching this story play out.
This was a fast and easy read that I was able to finish in less than 24 hours. Thank you to the author and the Nerd Fam for providing me with a physical advanced reader copy of this one!
The start of The Forgotten Lands series as crusading investigative journalist Sosie has her entire world turned upside down when her mother reveals the dark family secret that comes in three parts to her. It turns out the man she thought was her father isn’t! Her birth father has gone missing…. oh, and he isn’t human, so guess what Sosie neither are you. And after that shocker, her mother expects her daughter to find him.
Fantasy romance isn’t my favourite genre but the blurb for Daughter of the Fae caught my attention. I was intrigued enough about what kind of romance this would be considering Sosie was falling for her best friend but then it mentioned a fae warrior with smouldering eyes. Would she be forced to choose between two men or would she be greedy and keep both? Sorry Sosie, I’m fixed firmly on Team Warrior. Your friend Tris is a waste of space who will draw you down. He wasn’t even a good friend to you let alone lover material plus there was no real sense of chemistry between you. You are a strong and feisty woman who deserves more. Now Fae Wylen was a whole other story, I mean smouldering bedroom eyes…... be still my heart and I’m hoping something develops between him and Sosie as this series progresses and if he gets the opportunity to kick Tris’s ass then so much the better. The overall plot was engaging, and I enjoyed the mystery element of the story about what has happened to her father and as the story develops, I can see a dilemma ahead for Sosie especially if she’s forced to choose between two worlds.
This book is a thrilling dive into a world where the gritty realism of investigative journalism collides with the enchanting chaos of fae magic. The protagonist, Sosie, is a fierce and intelligent reporter who’s made it her mission to expose corruption in New Rothwick. But her world is turned upside down when she discovers a shocking truth—she’s not human.
The story masterfully blends the modern human world with magical realms, creating a rich and immersive setting. Sosie’s journey into the supernatural underbelly of the city is both exhilarating and emotionally charged. Her determination and sharp instincts make her a compelling lead, and her evolving relationships add depth to the narrative.
Weyland, the fae warrior with a quirky personality, steals the show with his hilarious antics and awkward charm. His banter with Sosie is a highlight, bringing levity to the darker moments of the story.
Tris, Sosie’s best friend and love interest, starts strong but becomes a more complicated figure as the plot unfolds. His internal struggles create tension, and it’s unclear where he fits in the shifting dynamics, especially with Weyland entering the picture.
The ending leaves you torn—equal parts satisfied and desperate for more. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions, and the cliffhanger sets the stage for an exciting sequel. If you love urban fantasy with strong female leads, witty side characters, and a touch of romantic drama, this book is a must-read.

Daughter of the Fae was quirky but in a good way. I enjoyed it. The story is set in a world slightly different from ours, where the supernatural is right underneath everyone's noses. Surprisingly, this felt more like a cozy urban fantasy. There's a little romance, interesting characters, missing people, illegal cage fights, and a variety of supernaturals.
The MFC, Sosie, is an investigative reporter. She had moxie. I liked her. There were two rivals vying for her attention: her best friend, Tris, and Wylen, the fae assigned to her father's case. With Tris, there was a friends-to-lovers situation. They've known each other forever, and now it's turning into something more. Tris was adorable. He's playful and protective, and he had Soise's back. Wylen, on the other hand, was slightly arrogant, which seems to be the way of the fae. However, he was willing to help and open to experiences. The more I got to know him, the more he won me over. So much so, I wish this were a why-choose.
I liked the story. It was a good mix of modern and fantasy. Between the sleuthing and the undercover work, things were always happening. The mystery was pretty good and led to a surprising end. I enjoyed the twist and seeing more of the fae. The story wrapped up nicely; no cliffhangers here. Daughter of the Fae is just the first book in the series; I'm excited to see where the series goes next. Anyone looking for a modern portal romantasy, this is worth checking out.
3,5 stars. Fae, secrets, magic, love and a lot of intrigue. Using her skills as a reporter, Sosie tries to find her father. As secrets are revealed she finds herself in a world of magic and has to decide if the price for truth, and lives, is worth paying.
I enjoyed reading this book. It starts off in a way that made me think that there would be more mystery. That Sosie would do more research and find out the truth in a slower pace, more investigations and “shocking” reveals. So I was a bit disappointed when some of the secrets were just blurted out. Sure it was a bit predictable but the main character should still go through these events even if you as a reader knows the outcome.
I like the way that her friend is included, that it’s not just our heroine that everything revolves around. The world turns out to be a lot more magical than anticipated and with beings that are not all human. I also enjoy the fact that it’s not just the unknown world and people that might be dangerous but that the society in which she lives is as well, if not more. The love story is sweet even if it’s a rollercoaster, with the trust and comfort it provides. Some things are left unsaid but since this is the first book in a series I’m expecting to get to know the characters better and also the different worlds in which they live.
Daughter of the Fae by A.L. Garr is an engaging and atmospheric urban fantasy that blends investigative grit with magical revelation in a way that feels both fresh and compelling. This is a story about identity, belonging, and the painful cost of truth—and it delivers all of that with strong character work and a pulse of simmering romantic tension.
The protagonist, a fearless investigative reporter with a talent for coaxing out the truth, is instantly likable. She’s fierce, principled, messy, and deeply human—which makes her sudden discovery that she isn’t human all the more powerful. Watching her world tilt off its axis as she grapples with her fae heritage, a missing father, and a city full of supernatural lies is one of the novel’s strongest elements.
The emotional stakes are equally gripping. Her complicated, slow-burn relationship with her best friend adds depth and heartbreak, while the arrival of a deadly handsome fae warrior throws her already-upended life into even more chaos. The love triangle tension is subtle but effective, adding layers without overshadowing the central mystery.
New Rothwick shines as a setting—a shadowy urban landscape full of corruption, magic, and hidden dangers. The blend of investigative thriller and fae fantasy gives the book a cinematic edge, and the mystery of her father’s disappearance keeps the momentum strong.
I received an advanced reader copy from NerdFam — this review and my opinions are my own.
From the very first page, this story drops you right into the action — no time wasted, no unnecessary buildup. In a modern-day setting with a dash of magic, we follow Sosie, an investigative journalist whose sharp wit, bold determination, and relentless curiosity instantly make her a character worth rooting for. Alongside her partner and bestie, Tris, we get a front-row seat to their investigations — and their effortless, witty banter gives the book so much personality.
One of the things I loved most is how seamlessly this story blends the modern world with myth and whimsy. You’ll find more than just fae here — vampires, werewolves, and even trolls make an appearance, creating a layered supernatural world that feels vibrant and alive. Add in a touch of mystery, a hint of a love triangle, and just enough tension to keep you guessing, and you’ve got a really fun start to what feels like a much bigger story.
While the ending wrapped with a big climactic moment that left me both satisfied and a little wistful that it was over so soon, it definitely set the stage for more to come. I’ll be eagerly waiting for book two — there are still so many questions I need answered!
