A Fairytale Just So Story
Why Does the Hummingbird Always Hum is a fairy tale story that explains how the hummingbird originated. Unfortunately, the author did not make mention whether this book is based upon a cultural telling or whether it is a work of the author for recreational purposes alone.
Either way, the story reads like any of the older Disney films or an original fairy tale but with a gender flip. And since the book is a point-by-point telling, there is no character development to make the handful of characters personable.
At the same time, for a book that is meant to be for 2-6 year olds, there are no illustrations for a visual break. As a result, young readers are provided with more a starting chapter book rather than a children's book.
Finally, the book ends rather abruptly and with a feeling that there should be more to the tale than what is provided.
All in all, the story is cute in its own regard and a quick read for someone looking to pass the time, but otherwise, it would have been much better written for a higher age group and with more details to round the story out than what is given with this copy.
