The Bakers are minding their own business when Briosa Del Quera bursts into their lives. She is an orphaned Catalan girl who is still reeling from her grandfather's death. His last words instructed her to find people called ‘Baker’ and get in contact with a secret agent they know—but Jigson has gone missing in suspicious circumstances and not even his agency is able to contact him.
Detective Mortimer says that Mr. Jigson was last seen in the Pyrenees mountains, and the Bakers are determined to find him and help Briosa get to the bottom of the plot against her grandfather. But as their journey through northern Spain becomes a breathless race to avoid villains and meet allies, they begin to wonder if Briosa has really told them everything. . . .
From a desperate car-chase to a stealthy escape from a Spanish fortress, the Bakers are tested to the limits of their courage and their trust in the Lord. Can they find Jigson and stop a global conspiracy, or will they all become prisoners of the Pyrenees?
A really great read! One of C.R. Hedgcock's best novels so far, if not the best in the Baker Family Adventures series. I especially enjoyed the meticulous and wide-ranging knowledge shown in detailing the Catalonian setting of the book, and of course, high-tech gadgetry interspersed here and there is always going to make my day! But the more serious themes explored in this book while maintaining a strong Christian viewpoint makes for an instructive story too. I would recommend this book for ages 13 to 18.
The only thing I can say about this book is, WOW! This is probably C.R. Hedgcock's best book yet! This book held exciting twists and turns. It gripped me from the very first chapter to the end. I can't wait for the next book in this series!
This author's books are so very clean and God-honoring and that is something I so appreciate. It's such a pleasure and honor to read clean, adventure stories that bring glory and honor to Christ and this whole series by C.R. Hedgcockhas certainly been just that.
I highly recommend this series to anyone who loves God-honoring, adventure stories.
What a brilliant story! My first introduction to the Baker Family, and I really enjoyed it! Everything was great, the plot, the characters, the many unexpected twists, etc., and I loved reading about Spain and all the different things related to it. Looking forward to reading the rest of this series!
WHAT!? Howwwwwww??????? I have no words. Literally no words. Rtc - when I can - if I can. On to Iceland Intrigue! Immediately!! Edit: Review still to come. I need to reread the book, but... this was so good. This series got better with every book, and this one was just brilliant. And that twist at the end! *screams*
It was so amazing. I cried in some parts of it! It is a truly amazing book! I have to say, this book, and Hunting In The Highlands are my fav books in this series!!
Series: Baker Family Adventures #5 (read them in order; I skipped books 2-4 because I wasn’t able to borrow them, and I definitely missed some things).
Age recommendation: 9-13
Summary: When a strange girl appears in their barn one day looking for Mr. Jigson, the Bakers are once again thrown into the middle of a crazy, unpredictable, mystery.
My thoughts: I really like the premise for this book; it was a very interesting idea. I’m not a fan of the murder parts though. I don’t think that is a necessary topic for an elementary/junior high aged book. The ending is very interesting too, although you will want to read the next book immediately after! The book itself is not super well written. There’s some clunky dialogue and weird descriptions/sentences in general. However, the story was interesting in and of itself, which distracted from the writing. I really like the Christian content in this book. The Baker family is always praying, quoting Scripture and asking God for help with their adventures. Sometimes books are put in the Christian genre that don’t have anything to do with God or Christianity, and this was such a nice change from the usual lack of Christian content. 😊 This book was a lot longer than I expected. I kept thinking that the book would end the next chapter because one thing will be resolved, but then something else happened. I like that I wasn’t able to completely predict everything that was happening so there was still some element of surprise to it! Overall, this was a fun read and I would totally recommend it to upper elementary school/middle school children!
I’ve never read the other books in this series, but this one was free one day and I picked it up. Since this is the 5th book in the series I did find myself a little confused about where exactly the family lives (England or US?), but figured it was probably England. The settings were well done and easy to picture where everyone was and what was going on without being overly descriptive, and the characters were fun. I enjoyed the fact that these characters prayed and quoted Scripture and not just when they were in great danger. I like reading about families who live out their faith all the time. The drama. Oh, the drama. I have to admit that I found myself smiling and rather amused during some of the most exciting parts. I expected much of the excitement, and had to chuckle at all the amazing gadgets this family had. If this book is any indication of the rest of the series, it’s very dramatic, full of danger, bad guys, excitement, people getting kidnapped by bad guys but always getting rescued, and mystery.
While clean, there was violence in the story, and I would hesitate to hand it to a younger reader. I might read another book in this series some day if I want a light book to laugh at but keep me reading, but wouldn’t want a steady diet of them.
Another great book by one of my favourite authors! :) And after you read this, you'll just have to read the next one. I'm so grateful to see authors writing books that I would want any future children I have to read. All of my siblings love the entire series. They are God-honouring, intriguing, and full of fun--a great mix!
Heart racing, this book will leave you breathless. Needless to say this one does leave a cliff hanger…. But it’s good and you’ll never see it coming. Join the Bakers as the battle alongside old friends, will they trust in God to help them survive?
Loved it! Put aside the unrealistic fact that this family is always off saving the world, and that they have all these amazing gadgets (Like is this a couple hundred years in the future? Lol) and the books is well written and immediately draws you in. I am enjoying seeing the Baker kids grow. This is book is full of fun and adventure, and some heartbreak too. Highly recommend!!
This book was more intense than the last few, as the stakes were higher for the characters. This being said, it was also more exciting, and once more, C. R. Hedgcock had me glued to the page from start to end. Well done to the author for skillfully weaving good story telling with solid Christian values.
Definitely the best so far out of all of this series! Full of suspense, mystery, danger, and Scripture. A perfect read aloud for the family. Completely clean.
