Letters of Light & Shadow

Rate this book
In a kingdom where Light is law and Shadow is treason, truth becomes the most dangerous story of all.

Sylvaine Nox has no magic, no divine favor, and no place in a society ruled by sacred flame. Yet when she's invited to teach myth at Umbraxis Academy, the holy seat of power for the god of Light, she steps into a world cloaked in doctrine, where obedience is worship, questions are heresy, and history is written in fire.

By day, she teaches Sacred Narratives. By night, she writes forbidden letters; seeking truth from the front lines, real updates from Light soldiers rather than the polished propaganda fed to the academy. But the replies she receives are not what she expected, and the soldier writing back may not serve the Light at all. What begins as a fragile connection soon becomes something far more dangerous: a lifeline, a mirror, a spark.

As Sylvaine encourages her students to question the stories they've been told, they begin writing letters of their own: reflections, confessions, myths that don't match the official script. Together, they begin to remember what was meant to be forgotten.

Whispers stir through the halls. Shadows begin gathering at the edges of Light. Something ancient is waking, something that remembers the world before the Light declared itself the only truth.

Haunted by a past she doesn't fully understand and pulled into a quiet rebellion she never meant to start, Sylvaine must decide what kind of story she's willing to tell. Because the Light protects, but only when obeyed. And the Shadow, long vilified, may be the only path to what was lost.

In a kingdom built on myth, even a letter can be an act of revolution.

Letters of Light & Shadow is a dark academic fantasy about memory, mythology, and the quiet power of connection in a world that punishes those who question. Perfect for readers who believe stories can both wound and heal, and that some truths burn brighter in the dark.

My summary: A grounded, character-driven fantasy about identity, control, and finding strength in unlikely places. Slow build, strong payoff.

To expand:

Letters of Light & Shadow is a well-written and thoughtful story about identity, power, and resistance. In this world, Light and Shadow aren’t just metaphors, they’re forces that impact people’s lives in real, sometimes devastating ways. The writing is strong and atmospheric without going overboard, and the world-building feels lived-in and believable.

Sylvaine’s journey is personal and compelling. She’s navigating grief, control, and her place in a system that wants to erase her. The relationships (especially with Lysander) add emotional weight without becoming melodramatic. Their connection is complicated, shaped by loyalty, loss, and the push and pull of trust.

The pacing is measured. It doesn’t rush the story, which gives space to absorb the themes and character development. The tension between Light and Shadow works well as both a magical conflict and a deeper commentary on control, belief, and survival.

The ending ties things up in a way that feels right but still leaves room to think about what comes next. It’s not flashy, but it sticks with you. Overall, an excellent freshman novel from Jennifer!!

Rating: 4.5/5

The only reason it’s not a full 5 is that the slower pacing might not work for every reader, especially if you’re looking for high-action fantasy. But if you’re into emotionally rich stories with strong themes and character depth, this one really delivers!

This book is phenomenal! I was completely captivated from the start. Poliwodas writing is so beautiful and expressive and full of gorgeous imagery. The way she draws you - the reader- into the world and has you wondering why we don’t question EVERYTHING! The story is incredible and one that needs to be told!
The mystery! The build! The unpredictability! The rebellious and brilliant female main character is exactly who I want to be when I grow up.
The main themes: Questioning authority and written word, Censorship, Obedience, Justice …. Amazing. Made me think so much about our world and really resonated with me personally. I was annoyed my plane landed and I had to stop reading in the middle- did not want to put it down.
I also love the dedication- “for everyone who sees the world burning and finds refuge in fictions flame”
Highly recommend 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was a strong and propulsive debut about propaganda and controlling the narrative- a very poetic and character driven fantasy. It featured lyrical prose that I’m still out about- on one hand the prose was really well written, but on the other hand I think it was a little much and a tad inconsistent. At times, it felt like the author was trying to throw in a punchy quotable line every other paragraph. Additionally, nobody does anything other than discuss the Light. I get that’s the main theme of the book, but it doesn’t make the world feel very lived in.

I’m also unsure about the back third of the book which featured a flashback into Sylvie’s childhood. In my mind it only served to interrupt the pacing to give us information that could’ve been more subtly place in the narrative. However I want to wait to read book two before placing official judgement on my feelings.

Despite my complaints, however, I do think this was a strong debut. I enjoyed the premise and I look forward to reading the next installment

Letters. secrets. truth that isn’t meant to be found.

Letters of Light & Shadow feels like reading something forbidden at 2am, in a quiet room lit only by candlelight 🕯️

This story isn’t loud. it doesn’t rush.

It lingers… slowly unfolding like ink spreading across paper.

I loved how intimate it felt — the letters, the emotions, the quiet questioning of everything sylvaine has ever believed. there’s something so powerful about a main character who isn’t the strongest in magic, but is strong in curiosity and courage.

The world feels controlled, almost suffocating… and watching the cracks form? so satisfying.

It is a slower read, so if you’re here for action, this might not hit the same. but if you love:
•dark academia vibes
•soft, emotional storytelling
•a touch of quiet rebellion

this one will wrap around you like a shadow you don’t want to escape ✨

This book feels like: writing the truth… and hoping no one finds out ♥️

What a debut novel! The depth that goes into describing grief, love, trust is so powerful and really helps you feel for Sylvaine and understand her character the more you read on.

I think this was a great set up for the next book. Understanding the Light and how it devours people and there still being intrigue with Shadow and it makes you look forward to learning more.

I think a content page would be great to understand the days of the week, the varying characters and their jobs and the festivals just to follow what lesson day they were on.

I’m really looking forward to seeing what Jennifer does in the future. This was a great first book and that makes me even more excited to see her grow and flourish!

I did an ARC/Beta read of Letters of Light & Shadow.

1st the world building in the beginning made me feel like I was walking right behind Sylvaine. The description made me feel like jumping into her world. The pacing was slow at first but then out of no where chaos erupts and I am here for it

2nd The side characters all have their own unique personalities and I am especially a fan of Thaliea and Aric!! The religious/Cult like scenarios was something I have never read before but I devoured it!

3rd The connection between Sylvaine and MMC that I can’t name and their letters to and from one another made my heart melt.

Cliffhanger ending —— I NEED MORE!!!

I loved every piece of this story and I look forward to the next book! Which I hope is coming sooner rather than later!!!

This was truly unique. I don’t know if I’ve ever read anything so rife with metaphors. I found that I needed to be in the right mindset to read it because it’s very much not plot driven. I get the sense the author is very intuitive and has a lot of body wisdom - the way she describes things is through the way they feel to the FMC as opposed to what they are. Because of this; there were times where I got a little lost in the floral language and the thread of plot slipped away. But in some ways, that feels very appropriate for the story. Overall it was beautifully written and I’m intrigued by what’s to come.

Excellent first authorship. The writing is extremely vivid. Jenn Poliwoda paints every scene with imagery down to the smells and dust on the chalk board. If you like feeling like watching a movie while reading this book is for you.

The book heavily focuses on being an outsider and what it takes for someone to melt into a society heavy with propaganda they disagree with. I think the main character, Sylvaine, is very relatable in this way. She is constantly expected to fit a mold she doesn’t agree with. Expected to be perfect, expected to be great, expected to be creative when there is no leniency for deviation from the pre-scripted message of the academy.

Jenn sets up a world building story with its own cultures, traditions, and history. Although the first book does not get too deep into the society outside of Umbraxia, I hope her second book expands on the world she has alludes to outside the academy. I also hope in the second book that we learn more about the supporting characters. I love being attached to surrounding characters and development of their stories which gives light to the history of the world she has built. Even if it makes it that much more heartbreaking to loose them😭.

Reflections: what does the truth in history look like and who is responsible for its impartiality? Is complete control really control or just eliminating competition?

A Captivating Blend of Mystery and Magic! (5/5 Stars)

Letters of Light and Shadow is a stunning debut that pulls you into a world where the "Light" is law and the "Shadow" is a death sentence. Jennifer Poliwoda has created a hauntingly beautiful atmosphere and a protagonist, Sylvaine Nox, who is incredibly easy to root for.

The world-building is rich and the stakes feel high from the very first page. I loved the exploration of mythology, buried memories, and the rebellion against a rigid system. It’s the perfect read for fans of Dark Academia and Romantic Fantasy who enjoy lyrical writing and complex characters.

Letters of Light & Shadow by Jennifer Poliwoda is the 1st book in the Legends of Light & Shadows Saga. It is a beautifully written story about about truth, deceit and finding your identity. Poliwoda’s peotic writing creates gorgeous imagery that makes the reader feel they are in the story. The characters are complex and the story thought-provoking.

Sylvaine is coping with her grief but bravely steps out of he comfort of home to a whole new academic world. She has an inquisitive mind and finds herself questioning the censorship and rules.

The intense connection Sylvaine has with the MMC - if I name him, I may give something away - through their letters is heart-wrenching.

This tale moves at a steady pace which lets the reader enjoy the stunning setting and absorb the story. This is a book to sit back, relax and immerse yourself.

Immersive Fantasy with Strong Momentum

Letters of Light & Shadow pulled me in quickly with its vivid world and engaging storyline. The author does a great job balancing character development with the unfolding adventure, which keeps the narrative moving while still giving the world depth.

What I enjoyed most was the atmosphere and the sense of discovery as the story progresses. Each chapter adds new layers to the world and its conflicts, making it easy to stay invested in the characters and their journey.

An entertaining and immersive fantasy read that kept me turning the pages.

Letters of Light & Shadow is a love letter to slow burn world building. We get to watch a world formed and then questioned along with the students of the main character. Culminating with an explosive reveal of power and character.
I personally enjoyed the look at a power system which has been built up as a religion, to then see it taken down question by question. It leaves you set up for a conflict that you will want to know how it ends.
A slow read, but a good one.

If you liked the Grishaverse as a teen, may I present to you the grown up version. I found this story to be deep and the writing to be lyrical, in a way that kept me engaged page after page. I really enjoyed the commentary on light/dark and good against evil.
