Anna and Natsuki are sharing a Ferris wheel cabin and maybe a bit more about themselves. During the group’s overnight outing, Mari isn’t exactly merry, but is she ever? And then a ghost shows up, but this volume is mostly about putting the fun in ‘perfunctory’.
I will spare the hurried reader trouble and tell you that this is going to run a lot like my previous series reviews, so stay tuned as I complain about everything that I usually do and then give it three stars.
The baseline for Rainbow Days is tolerable mediocrity with odd spots of brilliance that make continued consumption worth my while. When it is good, I cannot deny that it is very, very good.
Case in point, that ghost chapter involves Natsuki getting possessed and is utterly boring. Until the ending, which contains the line, “I’m about to transcend the mortal plane! Be a pal!”, which made me laugh very hard, and a great throwaway gag about the Occult Club and the school’s seven mysteries, one of which is the Occult Club President.
The rest of this instalment is… fine. It starts well enough; the Ferris wheel event brings our leads closer together and I really like the way they actually talk about things. Anna is just getting started in the notion of love and I like that she’s being encouraged to go at her own pace.
Even everybody hanging out is mostly okay, they even make a joke about the equal split of boys and girls, but then the two big problems with this story decide to rear their head again. That’s the way the story handles sexuality, in case there was any doubt.
I’m willing to bet money that this story isn’t even as nuanced as to address the concept of bisexuality with the whole Mari/Anna/Tomoya thing and I’m prepared to be infuriated even knowing that Japan’s LGBT+ track record is not so great.
It’s the same with that damn BDSM plotline that has exactly no nuance either. I’m not saying that you can’t make whip jokes, but having it be part of a lead’s character means you really need to be better about it than this story ever will be.
It’s aggravating and emblematic of the generally slipshod nature of this series as a whole. It has the feel that somebody wrote ‘whip’ on an index card and that was the whole thing without doing a lick of research. There’s nothing if substance to it at all.
Yes, I should probably lighten up about it, but it’s not even being used for GOOD jokes, so what’s the point? And this story can be super funny, but it’s gratingly and frustratingly inconsistent in that regard.
And, to top it all off, there’s an unrelated and also very boring one-shot about a shy girl in a newspaper club that’s just paint-by-numbers the whole way through and feels like a waste rather than a bonus.
Just not a strong outing, basically. Fine, yes, exceptional, hardly ever. And somewhat predictable, which means my reviews are tailor-made for it, honestly.
Mattsun admitting his feelings to himself and following Mari around like a lost puppy… CUTE!!!
Mari getting over herself and telling Natsuki that they’re friends… CUTE!!!
Nozomi liking Keiichi getting loud with her… CUTE!!!
I loved everything about this volume, even the weird chapter about Natsuki being possessed by a ghost… Although that felt so out of place lol.
And of course I loved the page collaborations with Like A Butterfly(love Suu Morishita)! And the short story in the back about the shy girl in the newspaper club was cute.
Rounding up because I laughed so hard at the Keiichi development. This is probably a 3.5-4 star book, but that one laugh is worth it. This is really only half of what we normally get because there's a just-for-fun supernatural story and a "bonus" one-shot manga story that's unrelated to these guys. As I was reading this, I felt like it was "ok" but there were a few bright spots that elevated it. The series still has the same issues it's always had, but it seems to be finding a groove.
Natsuki and Anna are sharing the Ferris wheel cabin (heart shaped) and they start talking about love, I think he’s making great progress without being pushy. We see Mari’s feelings crashing and being conflicted about her friendship with everyone, I like that Matsunaga is very considerate of her and is liking her more and more. We see Nozomi making a move on Keiichi and being very direct with him, I think Matsunaga will be very angry but what else can he do about it
This is one of the better volumes in the series. We're getting a little more progress with the romance between our two leads. I'm enjoying that aspect of the story. However, I don't like the secondary romance trying to blossom. It has vibes of "I'm going to keep pursuing you until you like me", and I don't like that.
This was one of the best ones I gotta say. It was super funny at the beginning and the middle slowed down just a tad bit the END?? Hashiba and kobokawa (I'm sorry idk how it's spelled) kissed. Finally. It was adorable

It was a good journey, but it still lack the vividity. If the up coming volume has no progress in either the relationships nor the characters themselves, I am considering quitting this manga.
Cute pero lo dropee aquí porque no me gustaba cómo iba (además medio me aburrí un poco demasiado) y mi chica fav estaba con el personaje masculino que menos me gustaba y ya no aguanté
If I could just excise the Mari/Mattsun romance from this series, I would like it a lot. However, the more screen time it eats up, the less I like this series.
3,75/5 "It's fascinating as hell. I can't handle it. It only makes me like you more" Pfff Mattsun de verdad no puedes soltar esas frases y quedarte tan pancho porque a mi me va a dar un parraque.
