A nice picture book featuring Paddington, intended as a beginner reader. Paddington, Judy and Jonathon are each given a square of garden to do what they choose with. One of those Paddington style accidents involving some quick drying cement and a jar of marmalade on a building site provide the perfect excuse for a rockery. Typical Paddington fun accompanied by some nice illustrations.

Paddington loves living with the Browns and one day he makes a list of the things that he likes about it. A room of his own, a warm bed to sleep in and lots more things but then he realises that he has left one of the nicest things of all off the list. ... the garden.

He finds it so quiet and peaceful, apart from the occasional noise from a nearby building site, that it did not feel like being in London at all. But he realises that having a nice garden means lots of hard work; Mr Brown has to mow the lawn twice a week, Mrs Brown has to tend the flower beds and even housekeeper Mrs Bird lends a hand on occasion.

And it is Mrs Bird who first suggests giving Jonathan and Judy, the Browns two children, and Paddington each a piece of the garden. 'It will keep certain bears out of mischief. And it will be fun for Jonathan and Judy as well,' she says. So the idea is adopted and an excited Paddington exclaims, 'I don't suppose there are many bears who have their own garden.'

The three of them set to work on their respective plots, Judy makes a flower bed, Jonathan lays a path but Paddington ponders what to do so he sets off with a jar of Mrs Bird's home-made marmalade in his wheelbarrow to see what he can come up with. First of all he calls at a stall in the market and buys a copy of 'How To Plan Your Own Garden' by Lionel Trug and Paddington discovers that it is full of useful hints and tips and there is the added bonus of a free packet of seeds.

One of the tips is to stand back and look at the garden from a safe distance, preferably somewhere high up, and imagine what it will look like. Paddington knows just the spot and he goes to the building site where the workmen are having their morning break. He places his jar of marmalade on a wooden platform for safe keeping and climbs a ladder onto some scaffolding that overlooks his garden.

Then, out of the corner of his eye he sees some concrete being poured out down below and realises that his marmalade is in peril. He scampers down the ladder and shouts at the workmen, 'My jar's been buried.' The foreman is not impressed and is not happy that a bear is roaming around his building site when suddenly there is a whirring sound and a wooden platform comes from overhead and lands at Paddington's feet. It has his jar of marmalade on it but as it hits the floor the top comes off and the contents pour onto the ground.

The quick-drying cement mixes with the marmalade and the foreman complains that his mix is ruined. 'No one will give me tuppence for it now,' bemoans the foreman. 'I will,' says Paddington who suddenly has a splendid idea.

Paddington works away for the rest of the week and on National Garden Day he is ready for the judges, some of whom are famous people, to come and view his efforts. Many of the neighbours turn up to see the results and Paddington wins a gold star for his orange stone decorated garden. And to crown the day, the head judge is none other than Lionel Trug, who is so impressed with the orange stones that he enquires where Paddington found them. 'I didn't. I think they found me thanks to the builders,' he replies.

Mrs Brown could not believe it and tells Paddington to write to Aunt Lucy and tell her all about it because she says that everyone in the Home for Retired Bears will be so excited when they hear the news. Paddington does so , adds 'Having my own rock garden' to his list of favourite things and signs his letter with a paw print!

Great stuff!

But nice gardens didn't just happen. They usually required a lot of hard work...
Paddington Bear spent the morning writing out what he was grateful for, and one of the best things he could think of was the garden.
It was Mrs. Bird who first suggested giving Jonathon, Judy, and Paddington each a piece of the garden.
Paddington quickly gets into the swing of things - deciding what to plant and hopping to it!

And while things get (unsurprisingly) messy, very messy...He ends up as pleased as a bear with a full jar of marmalade.

Ahhh...this one is near and dear to my heart. I love puttering around in my garden - tending my flowers, helping my vegetables grow, and making plans in winter for the next spring.

There's something so satisfying about watching the plants change throughout the seasons.

I loved seeing Paddington go through the steps of creating the garden (and the resulting chaos). As always, the art for this story was wonderful and the storyline was so sweet.

To krótkie, w dodatku zilustrowane opowiadania o Paddingtonie.

My z Antkiem lubimy i polecamy małym i dużym czytelnikom. A i czekamy na kolejne tomy z przygodami Paddingtona.

This book is a lovely story from the Paddington series in which Paddington is busy with his own garden, having been given a spot by the Browns' in the hope it will keep him out of mischief! Naturally Paddington and his penchant for marmalade get him into a bit of a palaver...with some unexpectedly delightful results! When it comes to the National Gardening Week competition, he decides to try his luck.
The illustrations, are gorgeous - as they always are in the Paddington originals. They are bright, beautiful and emotive; they are richly detailed and offer up lots to examine. My children have spent plenty of time pouring over them. They are closely matched to the text which supports young children with their understanding and language development, making it suitable even for young toddlers. That said, it's a fairly long read for children of that age so may need to be read in parts.
There is a lovely message of staying true to yourself, even with all of Paddington's apparent missteps, things always come right for him in the end because he never tries to be anything other than who is. Of course, the marmalade sometimes helps!

We ordered several Paddington Books from the library. I have to say these older editions are superior in my opinion to the newer ones. They're the "same" book, but the illustrations, storylines, people, have been changed at least in this case when you compare "Paddington's Garden" c1973 to the newer release "Paddington in the Garden." I convinced my six year old to let me read them back to back and then we discussed the differences. He too liked the older one and couldn't understand why they made the changes they did. I prefer the older illustrations with him in just the hat and with briefcase everywhere he goes.

Paddington in the Garden is a lovely picture book with beautiful illustrations and the love for Gardening!

I love how in the beginning of the story Paddington writes a list of all the nice things about being a bear and living with the Brown Family. Another good message: appreciation and gratitude of the things we do have in our life right now.

Paddington has become one of my comfort-to-go reads and If I ever do have children I will read to them every night Paddington :)

"...but Paddington didn't know what to do. In the past he had often found that gardening was much harder work than it looked, especially when you only had paws."

Even for the dexterous of us, gardening is hard work. Quite an appealing trio: the enterprising little bear as imagined by Michael Bond, a garden theme, and R. W. Alley’s bright illustrations.

A story about Paddington Bear in the Garden. The story starts off with Paddington writing a list of all the things he is grateful for. He then works in the garden and makes a rock feature. He adds this to the list of things he is grateful for.

Lovely book with lovely illustrations, my favorite of the Paddington series so far. But that could be in part because it has to do with gardening.

There is nothing that Paddington Bear loves better than living with the Browns...except maybe marmalade! But now Mr. and Mrs. Brown have given him something else to love at number thirty-two Windsor Gardens - his very own garden. Paddington sets to work in an attempt to create the most interesting garden he can. In typical Paddington style, hapless mischief leads to blind luck, and his garden turns out to be a most unique site indeed!

Paddington Bear has charmed readers around the world with his earnest good intentions and humorous misadventures. This newly repackaged edition of the classic picture book by Michael Bond, with full-color illustrations by R. W. Alley, is the perfect addition to any young reader's library.

Never having read a Paddington Bear book before I instantly fell in love with him. What's not to love about a marmalade loving bear that wears a coat and hat?!

At first glance I am reminded of Curious George when reading Paddington in the Garden, however there is one minor difference. It seems that Paddington pays for the things he does. Many times I have read Curious George thinking that he has stolen the items and objects until the man in the yellow hat appears and pays for it. I don't like that about those books. I've always thought it gives the impression that it's okay to take things without paying for them because eventually the grown-up will, aka the parent. Now there are serious consequences when that takes place, but I get sidetracked.

In Paddington in the Garden, Paddington is being given a small plot of the backyard where the Brown's garden is, for his own gardening ideas. Paddington then takes his marmalade, and borrows Mr. Brown's wheelbarrow to go to town for his supplies. After buying a copy of How to Plan Your Garden by Lionel Trug, Paddington proceeds to find a high vantage point to over see the garden. Entering the construction area next door to the Brown's residence, Paddington climbed up a ladder and began to imagine the garden, however, far below the construction foreman was busy to work pouring concrete, right where Paddington remembered leaving his marmalade. After bounding down the ladder and stopping the foreman, the crew began searching for the marmalade in the concrete. Shortly after Paddington's jar appears on a small wooden board and is safe, however, the jar tips at the last moment, spilling all over the fast drying concrete turning it orange, the color of the marmalade.

And this is where I really love this story. This is clearly Paddington's fault for being in a dangerous area where he should not have been, which the foreman states that he isn't going to ask him about. Upon hearing the foreman displeased about the color of the concrete and realizing that he isn't going to get payed for it, Paddington comes up with an idea to use the concrete and pays him for his mistake! The foreman, being thankful to Paddington for this and being impressed by his rock garden, gave him plants to finish the project off until his seeds start to grow and offers to spread the word about the project to the judges for that Saturday is National Garden Day.

So not only does Paddington help clean up and pay for his messes but also wins the prize for the National Garden Day contest with his rock garden. Paddington also adds the rock garden to the list he has created about all the things he is thankful for and loves about living with the Brown's.

Over all I am not wanting to start from the beginning of these books and read the whole series. I am a huge fan of Curious George, don't get me wrong, but I also enjoy a story with more responsible characters and lessons.

I recommend Paddington in the Garden for anyone who is a fan of Curious George, bears, Paddington and gardens/gardening. I also recommend to any one trying to teach their children responsibility and giving a strong message of doing what's right when accidents happen.

As a huge Paddington fan from my own childhood, I was pleased to spot a few picture book versions on the shelf at the library - it's never too early to introduce my little one! This tale finds Paddington with his very own garden plot to take care of - but of course gardening is harder than it looks, and Paddington gets into his usual array of scrapes before coming around with a beautiful result in the end. It was quite a nice little tale, with lovely, cuddly illustrations that did Paddington justice, and just the right amount of marmalade ;-)

This review was published at The Children's Book and Media Review run by Brigham Young University.

While Paddington is in the garden making a list of all of the nice things about being a bear and living with the Browns, he realizes that one of the nicest things of all is the garden. Jonathan, Judy, and Paddington each have a piece of the garden to take care of, and Paddington discovers that gardening is much harder than it looks. He buys a book and then sits at a high spot so that he can see the garden area from a distance and his jar of marmalade gets covered by construction equipment. With some help from the construction workers, he gets his marmalade back and finds a unique way to make the garden just right for him.

Paddington is back in a usual story about how he accidentally gets into trouble, but does his best to make amends and otherwise fix the situation. This picture book makes Paddington available for fans that are old or young. The illustrations beautifully capture this classic children’s character and his adventure in trying to create the perfect garden. For old fans of Paddington and those new to the adventures of this marmalade-loving bear, Paddington in the Garden will be a delight to read.
