There was a lot of healing that needed to take place in this story. Not only did the rescued donkey, Dunk, and the rescued horse, Buddy, learn to trust again, but Vicky and Nick also learned to move on and heal from the trauma of losing Roger. Vicky lost her husband and Nick lost his best friend. But it was Vicky’s bitter anger and Nick’s guilt that kept them both from moving forward until they allowed the healing to begin.

Even though this story is part of a series, I had no trouble jumping in and getting to know and care about the characters in this book. I appreciated the way Vicky and Nick eventually sat down and discussed the events that had led to Roger’s death and Vicky’s truthful admission of how hard it was for her to let that anger go and move on. This sweet romance definitely left me with a hopeful feeling in my heart.

A Refuge in Montana has Buddy, Dunk, a little boy with a big heart, and a rescue farm full of second chances.

Buddy the horse and Dunk the donkey brought sweetness and personality to the page, and I loved the way little Taylor wanted to be part of caring for them. Those scenes gave the book its tenderest moments for me. There is something very special about wounded animals learning to trust again while the people around them are quietly needing the same kind of care.

Vicky is trying hard to keep life steady for her son after losing her husband. Then Nick returns with the animals in tow, and suddenly the grief she has been carrying is standing right in front of her again. She has blamed him for her husband’s death, and that kind of hurt does not disappear just because someone walks back into town.

I appreciated that forgiveness is treated as something brave. Not easy. Not tidy. Courageous. Vicky and Nick both have painful things to face before healing can begin, and the rescue-farm setting made that theme feel natural.

This is a sweet, gentle Love Inspired romance with a soft place for rescue animals and wounded hearts. Buddy and Dunk may come to the farm needing help, but they are not the only ones God uses this refuge to reach.

I received a digital ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. I was not required to write a positive review and was not compensated in any way. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own and reflect my honest evaluation of the writing and content.

Whenever I pick up a Love Inspired book by Allie Pleiter, I know I’ll experience a heartfelt story with emotional depth, some sort of adorableness, a community of great supporting characters, and a sweet & swoony romance. And her latest Three Sisters Rescue Farm novel, A Refuge in Montana, delivers all of the above in spades!

Widowed single mom veterinarian Vicky Siden is still recovering from the death of her game warden husband as she juggles her job, her mom & aunts, and her precociously endearing three-year-old son Taylor. She’s been blaming Roger’s best friend & coworker Nick Youngston for his death all this time, so the last person she wants to see at her mom & aunts’ rescue farm is – you guessed it – Nick Youngston. With a skittish pair of equine best friends in tow, a donkey named Dunk and a horse named Buddy. Let me just say right here that Dunk and Buddy’s ‘the next twenty feet’ journeys toward healing from their trauma – and how it paralleled Vicky and Nick’s own journeys – broke my heart and sewed it back up again too. And the addition of precious Taylor to the mix – with all his enthusiasm and trust and eager joy – made this part of the story all the more special. I definitely teared up a few times reading this story but I also grinned a lot too. Because, oh my heart, there’s something so sweet about Nick and Taylor’s friendship, Taylor’s adorable personality in general, and the eventual romance that develops between Nick & Vicky.

Bottom Line: Like the traumatized rescue animals learning to trust again one careful step at a time, the human characters in A Refuge in Montana by Allie Pleiter slowly find their way back to hope and healing too – and it’s truly a pleasure to watch it unfold. This author once again skillfully balances emotional depth with warmth, humor, and sweetness, and I especially loved the poignant parallels between Dunk and Buddy’s healing journey and the emotional paths Vicky and Nick were traveling themselves. Add in darling little Taylor (who is stinkin’ adorable), the swoony romance between Vicky and Nick, and the times when Dunk and Buddy stole the show, and we’ve got another Pleiter story that completely captured my heart. A Refuge in Montana is a great next read for fans of rescue animals, cute kids, and heartfelt stories of redemption and restoration! Now… will Vicky’s brother get a story next??

A Refuge in Montana by Allie Pleiter is a sweet (i.e. no heat) romance with strong Christian overtones. While I appreciate and support using prayers and going to church, this book was not identified in the Christian genre. Quite frankly, I wouldn’t have chosen to read it, if it was.

The book's main characters were Nick and Vicki. Vicki’s husband died. Her husband's best friend was Nick. Vicki blamed Nick for his death and was quite angry - even bitter about what happened. Vicki also has a young son who is all about horsey man.

The other main characters were Dunk (donkey) and Buddy (horse). Both were rescues and needed attention and care. I loved the animals in the story as they made the human characters more empathetic.

The novel is listed as the second book in a series called Three Sisters Rescue Farm. While I didn’t read the prior book, I didn't struggle with a backstory or characters that I might have missed. A Refuge in Montana by Allie Pleiter is a sweet Christian read with empathy and forgiveness.

Vicky has spent the past two years blaming her husband’s best friend, Nick, for her husband’s work-related death. Her feelings went unchallenged because Nick blamed himself and disappeared rather than face her. In this book the day of reckoning comes when Nick shows up with two rescue animals at Vicky’s family’s animal rescue farm. The heavy feelings generated by Vicky’s anger and lack of forgiving were lightened a bit by Buddy, a horse, and Dunk, his donkey sidekick and by 3yo Taylor, Vicky’s son, who immediately took the animals and Nick to his heart. It took Vicky a bit longer. This book shows that with God, nothing is impossible. I especially loved Dunk, the donkey, who provided hilarious comic relief and who quickly responded to the rehabilitation. If you enjoy inspirational Christian rom-coms then you should enjoy this book. I did and enthusiastically give it my recommendation! I received an ARC from the publisher. All opinions expressed are completely my own.

"A Refuge in Montana" by Allie Pleiter is such a sweet romance featuring a family that runs a rescue farm. The couple in the book both have misunderstandings, particularly the widow Vicky surrounding the death of Vicky's husband years before who worked with Nick (main male character) at the time of the husband's death. Vicky is also the mother of a small, very cute boy who adds some lighter moments and definitely some humor into the story.

Nick brings a horse and donkey to the rescue farm and I liked how the author portrayed Buddy and Dunk. She did some excellent research on rescue farms so it was interesting to see how she brought that knowledge into the story.

This book has some great Christian faith moments in it, forgiveness and character growth for the main couple of the story. It has that comfortable, happily ever after feeling to the story which readers enjoy in the Love Inspired books.

I enjoyed this sweet and clean Christian romance and can see this being one that's good for ages 16+ to read. It does talk about how Vicky's husband died but there's nothing graphic in the story. The book has some sweet kisses but nothing beyond that.

Thank you to Harlequin Books - Love Inspired for the opportunity to read an ARC of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.

Set in Big Sky Country, A Refuge in Montana is the second book in Allie Pleiter’s Three Sisters Rescue Farm series.

Buddy, a horse, and Dunk, a donkey, are rescues brought to the farm by Nick, who has a strained history with the local vet, Vicky. Her mother and two aunts run the farm, so Nick and Vicky’s paths are sure to cross, much to her dismay. Plus, it’s a small town, and run-ins are to be expected. The town is full of gossipers, and nothing goes unnoticed. Vicky’s young son, Taylor, adds another layer to the story. The pet parade fundraiser is to raise funds for their care.

I wouldn’t consider this book a standalone, as I felt I was at a disadvantage for not having read the first book, since the relationships were established. I don’t know the full backstory of most of the characters, just the bits and pieces mentioned throughout.

There are second chances for the animals rescued and brought to the farm, as well as for some of their human counterparts. There are some surprises along the way, as well as prayers and reflections. The epilogue gave closure, but it would have been nice if it had gone on a little longer.

A Refuge in Montana is filled with second chances, unexpected romance, love, and healing.

This is a sweet, wholesome, faith and family focused romance with such loveable, compassionate characters, especially precious Taylor. It's a realistic, heartwarming and emotional story about healing, forgiveness, coming to terms with grief and having the courage to start over. I loved the rescue farm and all the animals. Such a cozy small town feel and the timeless values of family. Beautiful writing and wonderful reading you don't want to miss out on!

A sweet novel revealing the true meaning of forgiveness. How do you forgive someone you have resented for two years? It was easier when he was no longer in the area but when he returns? Four stars for this clean novel that shows how forgiveness can change everything.

A Refuge in Montana by Allie Pleiter is a faith filled story.

Vicky Siden, a widow with a young son, has been angry and hurt ever since her husband was killed three years ago. She tries to pretend that everything is all right until Nick Youngston shows up. He brings a donkey and horse that have been abused to the Three Sisters Rescue Farm, the family farm run by Vicky's mother and two aunts. Vicky still blames Nick for the death of her husband. Vicky and Nick are stuck in the past and must learn to accept forgiveness in order to heal.

This small town story is about grief, forgiveness and healing. A touching enemies to lovers trope.

Sweet romance with lots of heart from the pen of Allie Pleiter. Pleiter takes readers back to the Three Sisters Rescue Farm, where not only animals are rescued, but broken hearts are mended.

Loved the heart, both behind the rescue farm, and in the many characters in the story. As always, Pleiter gives some hard truths mixed in with the sweetness overload. There's a strong faith thread that underpins everything. Readers will fall in love with the Farm's most recent occupants, Buddy the horse, and Dunk the Donkey, and with the little boy who loves them both.

Allie Pleiter is one of my favorite Love Inspired authors, and A Refuge in Montana takes readers back to Three Sisters Rescue Farm where widowed veterinarian Vicky Siden is about to have an unwelcome blast from the past show up in her life.

A lovely story about forgiveness, healing, and the never ending power of redemption, this was one of those stories that tugs at your heartstrings from the very beginning, and I had a hard time wanting to put it down. Vicky was a character that was introduced in the previous stories, and I had a feeling I would end up loving when she got her own story. When Nick reappears in Vicky's life, she's not sure how to deal with all the bitter memories he stirs up in his wake. As he starts to be a constant presence around the rescue farm with a donkey and a horse that her son Taylor is completely smitten with, she can't deny that her feelings are changing in ways she never could have seen coming. As the two learn to trust their healing to the One who holds all the answers, readers are treated to a wonderful, heartwarming romance that highlights that all things are possible when we trust our Heavenly Father.

Once again, Allie Pleiter has delivered a beautiful, faith filled romance that doesn't sugar coat the hard things, and illustrates that the path to healing is rarely ever symmetrical. Vicky's story was everything I was hoping for, and it was a special treat to get to revisit characters from the previous stories once again.

If you enjoy heartwarming Christian romances, then I'd definitely recommend picking up this lovely title. You won't be disappointed.

Final Rating: 4/5.

Reviewed at Happily Ever After Romance

A Refuge in Montana is the second title in the Three Sisters Rescue Farm series; this time, Vicky has to face the man she blames for her husband’s death, and Nick must deal with the past in order to forge a future. It’s going to be an emotional rollercoaster for them, plus toss adorable little Taylor into the mix (who steals scenes left and right), and two people who are wounded from the past who need to face what cannot be changed, even as unexpected emotions erupt between them.

In reality, Vicky knows that Nick didn’t cause her husband’s death. Yet logically knowing that, emotionally accepting that, and even forgiving him are altogether different situations. A Refuge in Montana not only gives us a lovely, emotionally rich romance but also eventual forgiveness. I saw the parallel between the wounded animals that they both care for and their own situation as another layer of healing. Their romance is well-written, emotional, and, yes, healing in so many ways for both of them. Taylor, Buddy, and Dunk added a touch of innocent charm, especially as Taylor was so determined to help the horse and donkey heal as well. There are beautiful life lessons to be learned as Vicky and Nick allow their feelings to grow, setting the stage for future happiness… sometimes forgiveness is a gift that we not only give to another person, but is vital to our own mental health as well. If that sounds like your kind of romance, then you’ll love this one.

Loved Nick and Vicky's story!! Of course, Taylor (Vicky's son), Dunk (a donkey) and Buddy (a horse) almost steal the show!! Nick was Vicky's deceased husband's best friend, and godfather to Taylor. He blamed himself for the death of Roger, and felt Vicky and everyone else would blame him, too. Vicky did blame Nick, though he was exonerated for Roger's death. Now, Nick returns to Vicky's life by bringing an abused donkey and horse to Three Sisters Rescue Farm. Vicky doesn't want to forgive Nick, she doesn't even want to talk to him. However, Taylor immediately takes to Nick, and Nick is really good with Taylor, Dunk and Buddy. The more time Nick and Vicky spend together, and when Vicky hears what Nick has to say about the day Roger was killed, she realizes that she's hurting herself and Taylor more than anyone. And, she can see that Nick isn't the man she thought he was. Nick is sure God must not love him, until he works with Dunk and Buddy, and learns some eternal truths from helping them. Love how everything comes together, for the humans and the animals!!

A Refuge in Montana by Allie Pleiter
Three Sisters Rescue Farm Series Book Three
Nick Youngston has come to High Mountain for several reasons. The biggest one is that he’s hoping for redemption, although he feels unworthy of it. He’s bringing Dunk and Buddy, a rescue donkey and horse, to Three Sisters Rescue Farm, but he’s hoping to talk with Vicky. Tell his side of the story of what happened three years ago. He didn’t expect to fall in love with his godson, Taylor, whom he’d woefully neglected.
Dr. Vicky Siden couldn’t believe the man had the nerve to come to her town and even approach her. A man she’s blamed for the death of her husband for three long years. And he’s sticking around because of the rescues he brought! Taylor, her three-year-old, fell in love with Dunk and Buddy and seems mighty fond of Nick, too!
A heart-warming story. Vicky and Nick are both consumed by regret and guilt, and haven’t moved forward. Plus, Vicky is carrying a load of hate and unforgiveness. And Taylor? He’s just an incredible little boy. And of course, the meddling three sisters.

Thank you to Love Inspired and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.

In Book 2 of the Three Sisters Rescue Farm series, Allie Pleiter brings the reader a story of faith, forgiveness and hope. Set in Montana, widowed veterinarian Vicky Siden is raising her son and trying to pretend that everything is alright. With the arrival of game warden Nick Yongston at her family's animal rescue farm, it is made more difficult as she holds him responsible for her husband's death. Her three-year-old son Taylor embraces Nick as he has brought Buddy and Dunk to the farm for rehab. As they start to spend time together with Taylor, discussions are dealt with honestly and truthfully and a second chance at love is around the corner if they can forgive the past and put faith and hope in the future.

This novel had all the makings of a Love Inspired romance with faith, hope and forgiveness. The emotions and feelings of the characters and supporting characters are well-developed and enhanced the storyline. If you are looking for a quiet way to spend an afternoon, this novel is a great way to do that.

Veterinarian Vicky Siden is far from pleased when Nick—her late husband’s best friend—arrives in her small Montana hometown with a rescued horse and donkey destined for her family’s animal sanctuary. Three-year-old Taylor, however, is instantly captivated. He’s eager to help Nick care for the animals and even learns to ride the donkey, much to his delight.
Although Vicky knows Nick wasn’t responsible for her husband’s death—and every official report confirms it—grief has left her with lingering blame she can’t quite let go of. Yet as she watches Nick patiently teach Taylor and sees how deeply he cares for the animals, the tension between them begins to soften. Slowly, a new friendship forms, opening the door to healing Vicky never expected.
This is a tender, uplifting story filled with lovable, relatable characters facing real-life heartaches and hard-won hope. Allie Pleiter delivers a gentle, emotionally satisfying read about forgiveness, community, and the courage to start again.

A Refuge in Montana by Allie Pleiter is a tender and uplifting tale with realistic, relatable characters. They experience heartache, doubt, struggles, hope, and joy, which makes the story feel genuine and heartfelt. I especially loved Vicky’s son, Taylor. Children at that age are both adorable and wonderfully honest. Vicky’s mother and aunts are delightful additions to the story, bringing humor and warmth. Their care for the animals, as well as for Vicky, Taylor, and the townspeople, shines through, and I enjoyed their well-meaning meddling.

I also felt for Dunk and Buddy, the horse and donkey. The story is a good reminder that animals are intelligent and have feelings, too. A Refuge in Montana is the third book in the Three Sisters Rescue Farm series. Although it can be read as a standalone, I would recommend reading the first two books as well to fully enjoy this charming series. With a thread of faith woven throughout, this is a poignant story about hope, forgiveness, and healing.

This was a really sweet and heartwarming story of grief, hope, and forgiveness.

There was a lot of history and hurt between Vicky and Nick. He was her husband’s best friend, and she blames him for his death. When he brings a neglected donkey and horse to the Three Sisters Rescue Farm for some rehabilitation, they have a chance to hash things out. I was really rooting for them to work things out.

Vicky’s son Taylor was adorable. And I loved Dunk the donkey and Buddy the horse. I liked seeing Taylor’s sweet relationship with the animals.

I really enjoyed this story and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a sweet and inspiring contemporary romance. Even though it’s part of a series, it stands alone perfectly fine.

Forgiveness and second chances on the Three Sister's Rescue Farm.

Vicky Siden is a widowed vetrinarian with a young son. When her late husband's friend brings a horse and donkey duo to the rescue farm, it stirs up a lot of emotions. Can they find reconciliation?

Nick and Vicky end up working together on a fundraising event for the farm, while confronting their past. I liked how they worked together and came to an understanding, Nick is very respectfully of Vicky's boundaries and her young son, Taylor.

I liked how we also catch up with characters from the previous books and their support and friendship with each other. Heartwarming and emotional, with strong faith, and second chances. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

This was my first book by Allie Pleiter, and it turned out to be such a sweet, heartwarming story filled with all the small town charm I love. The setting in Montana felt cozy, the mix of community, healing and second chances made it an easy book to sink into.

Vicky and Nick’s story had just the right balance of emotion and hope. I appreciated how their past pain was handled with care and how forgiveness became such a central theme. But honestly, little Taylor completely stole the show for me. His energy and innocence brought so much warmth to the story and made every scene he was in shine.

A REFUGE IN MONTANA was a lovely, feel good read that left me smiling. I’m giving it the judy.ann.loves.books stamp of approval, TBR and Enjoy!

A REFUGE IN MONTANA , the third book in the “Three Sisters Rescue Farm,” is an emotional, enemies- to- lovers story.
Widowed mom and veterinarian, Vicky Siden blames Nick Youngston, game warden, for her husband’s death.
Even though a poacher shot his partner and best friend, Nick blames himself for not doing more to keep him safe. While on medical leave, Nick brings an injured horse and donkey to the “Three Sisters Rescue Farm” for rehabilitation.
Despite her anger at Nick, Vicky agrees to work with him to treat the animals. The couple also find healing for their grief as they fall in love.
A beautifully written, emotional read, this inspiring story is a reminder of the power of forgiveness and love.

Second chances aren’t easy. Vicky and Nick are both hurt and hiding. But little Taylor won’t let them stay that way.

I always love Plieter’s small town settings and it was so good to return to the Three Sisters Rescue Farm, where anything can happen. Just ask Buddy and Dunk. (I really loved Dunk!)

First time reading this author, didn’t know what to expect, but I really enjoyed it. It was a great read. You could fill the trauma that the main female character was going through and then the main male character you could feel his guilt sorrow come through for what he felt like he had done wrong. It was a really well written story.

This was a light and easy romance about Redemption, guilt and grief. Vicky is a Vet and single mom grieving the loss of her husband. Nick, her husband’s friend, brings some animals to the family refuge farm and Vicky’s anger towards Nick becomes apparent. Nick wants to work towards healing and forgiveness but will Vicky give him a chance?

Maybe Zach’s story is next?
