I started this book with a ginormous knot in my stomach. As elated as I was to begin reading it, this being the final book in the series, had me twisted up something bad. Was I, am I ready to say goodbye to Daphne and Romeo? Myf? DWAYNE??? And the rest of the cast? I was woefully not. Except, a very strange thing happened when I reached the end, instead of being devastated, as I assumed I'd be, I was freaking doing the happy dance! I was freaking high fiving myself. I was freaking smiling! Here's why....
Since Daphne exploded onto the pages in a previous series, I couldn't get enough of her. This itsy bitsy wolf shifter with a vicious streak, stole my heart. What she suffered, what she endured, what she overcame, my heart bled for her. Surviving all she did, remaking herself as she did, to where she is today, a woman who's strong, a woman who's fiercely protective of those she loves, a woman who will do whatever it takes to protect children, a woman who refuses to give in to the evil around her, within her, a woman with the softest heart and the toughest stance, hell, her metamorphosis is complete. Wasn't easy, no siree, she even has a "extra her" living in her head, a bloodthirsty extra her. But...to understand why, you'd have to read the series. Lauretta's sensitive approach to the horrors Daphne went through, raw and emotional, is brilliant. She immersed me into Daphne's world, her storytelling reaching new heights with every book and this was no exception.
These are all characters I felt, carved into my DNA, spectacularly distinctive and, let's face it, as wacky as all heck! Lovely wacky! Cool wacky! Impressively wacky! The relationships Daphne forged with the most eccentric of eccentrics, gave even more depth to her. Her genuine WANT to help is palpable, tangible, I can almost grasp it. But she has major stumbling blocks along the way... trying to calm her "other" voice, evading arrogant Alphas, dodging crazy wizards, basically, trying to stay alive! Oh my do I adore the characters! Myf and Valerie made my jaw drop at how far they've come. And it's all thanks to the compassionate Daphne, who saw more in them than mere outcasts. That's a lie, ok, Daphne DID have a lot to do with it but it was the out of this world imagination of Ms Hignett, who took the lead and twisted it up and gave me a unique set of, well everything! Plot! Penmanship! Characters! Storytelling! Phenomenal! And Marie, how exciting to see her and her unhinged awesomeness once more, what a delight she is! ! The Countess is another character that is uniquely "her", I absolutely loved her. As I did Dora, an amazeballs baby who's not quite a baby! Now, her daddy, Dwayne, is a hoot a second, who is chaos incarnate, who is crazier than crazy, who is extraordinary in the true sense of the word. And a goose. And a god. And funny. And fun. His love for Daphne, unparalleled. She herself said it true, "Everyone I loved accepted me for who I was. Dwayne went a step further—he loved me for the monster I could occasionally be."
Romeo, be still my heart, I just adored! His relationship with Daphne, I just adored. His gentleness, his love, willingness to do anything, and I mean ANYTHING for Daphne, melted me into a puddle. And the "anything" was hair-raising at times. By golly were some scenes heart stopping! By the time I got to the battle scene at the end, the confrontation with Christopher and his goons, I was a limp noodle. Ms Hignett made every scene so vivid, I was there with them. Tense and intense, pulse racing like crazy, I participated in it all. This was a read that had complete control of me, right from book 1.
Ms Hignett surprised me more than once, good grief did she put me through the mincer! What incredible penmanship! Every blow landed on me, every thought took over my mind, every emotion courses through me like wildfire! There were giggles galore, there were tears, there were adrenaline rushes, there was despair and there was the warmth that infused me with all the love, support and the most amazing found family. This book and series truly has it all! It's hard to pinpoint exactly what makes this book and series so "standout", it the combination of the engaging plot, the fast but easy pace, the banter which is unimaginably impressive and clever. Heck, this entire series is clever! Delight on an unprecedented scale. So, sad, yes but very very content at this finale. I can't wait to see what this talented author produces next!
