VERY DISAPPOINTED! A duet is a story told in two books. There is no such thing as a sequel duet. That is called a series! Had I known that Flameborne was an incomplete series rather than a duet, which is to be followed by another duet, I would never have started it. There is zero chance I will remember the story or care enough in 8 months to continue on with the series. Not impressed with this author!

Best dragon series ever!

I’d love to see this series made into a movie. It’s amazing! Bren MFC has come so far and I love how at times she stills struggles just like the rest of us do. The relationship between the dragons is incredible and there’s time when it makes me reflect. You won’t be disappointed in this series. That cliffhanger though!

Snapshot: espionage, dragons, politics

This was disappointing. For a third book in the series, we are STILL barely scratching the surface on Bren finally getting some confidence... it's been too drawn out. There is still this weird childlike component to her and she even addresses it herself at one point. It bothers me that even Donavyn notes it, as her love interest (you see her as a child? Ick!!) Donavyn also starts to become unlikable & controlling. Uhhh can we deny a mate bond at this point?

The biggest problem for me was the pace. There is so much inner monologue, condescending monologues from Kgosi, and there was virtually no action or plot development until 70% of the book. Also, the religious comments started getting really distracting and pulling focus from the plot. The "creator" is really shoved down our throats.

We talked about this upcoming espionage trip the entire book, and when they finally get there, we only get a couple chapters and a cliffhanger. Frustrating. For all this talk about Bren finally getting to prove herself, it was unsatisfying.

The overall plot is good (secret spies on dragons? Very cool!) but we barely actually see it. Too much of the book is spent on fluff. Without the fluff, the book could have been 100pgs.

oh. my. God.

that cliff!!! im usually excellent as seeing the cliff from a mile away. its a talent of mine. but this one... no way! Aimee!!! what was that?! and now i have to WAIT??

Okay. im still reeling from that so my thoughts are all jumbled.

this was a fantastic book. the perfect length with a good amount of smut and plot. it balanced so nicely! thats sometimes hard to find these days.

without giving away spoilers, this is the 3rd book of this series so obviously you've read the first two if youre reading this review. if you havent, this is your sign to go to book one and start! I will admit that I struggled a bit at the beginning of book one but I am so glad I kept going. its been a journey!

this may become God tier level for me depending on book 4, which is the last book of the series (I think), and how it all ends. im really hoping for certain events to happen. namely talon 😒 gets what he deserves, and more women are welcomed in joining the furyknights. if those two things happen, ill be happy.

personally, I think there should be an extra star rating for God tier books. so im giving this book and series (so far) a 6⭐️ rating with a powerful 4🌶. all of the smut is very deeply emotional which i absolutely love! (also hard to come by)

all in all, highly HIGHLY recommend this book and series as a whole to anyone who loves that balance between plot and spice, fantasy lovers, dragons especially, with Fated mates.

well done Aimee!

Honestly the ending (or the events leading to the ending) was the best part of this book in the series. I knew the past would inevitably come back in some way, so I’m excited to see later this month how it turns out in the next book.

Im reading words but NOTHING IS HAPPENING !!!! Same as last book, first 80% is repetitive and then finally we get a bit of progress in the last 100 pages, I’m too far deep to quit now since there’s one book left, hopefully it’s exciting since it’s the finale ugh

Ready for the Conclusion

I really enjoy this story but Donovan and Kgosi's back and forth about rusting Brennan and God's will was tiresomely repetitive. As with the previous books, this one ends on a heck of a cliff hangar and I'm glad I won't have to wait too long for the finale.

I had to physically pause and collect myself before writing this because when I say GROWTH?!?!?!!! 😩🔥 THIS BOOK DID NOT COME TO PLAY!!!

Bren & Donavyn’s relationship??? Yeah… this wasn’t just love—this was soul-deep, bone-deep, rip-you-apart-and-build-you-back-together type of love 😮‍💨🔥 Their mate bond might be destined, but baby the way this book showed that even fated love requires WORK?!?!? Whew.

Because let’s be real—just because you’re meant for each other doesn’t mean you automatically get it right. And THAT’S what made their story hit so hard. The struggle to protect each other, to carry pain, to shield the one you love… while also learning that you cannot control everything??? That you have to let go, trust, and allow God to guide, protect, and provide?!?!? 😩✨

That right there??? That was the real battle.

Donavyn wanting to take on everything, to be her shield in every way possible… and Bren learning that strength isn’t just enduring—but also surrendering, trusting, and standing firm in faith even when everything feels like it’s falling apart??? I was SICK over it in the best way 😭🔥

Their love wasn’t just consuming—it was refining. It stripped them down to their weakest points and forced them to grow, to heal, to TRUST not only each other but the path laid out for them. And that kind of love??? The kind that requires you to release control and believe that what’s meant for you will not miss you??? Yeah… that hit DIFFERENT.

And don’t even get me started on how that mate bond didn’t erase their flaws—it EXPOSED them. It demanded evolution. It demanded faith. It demanded that they become the people they were meant to be for each other 😮‍💨🔥

Listen… I devoured their weakness, their strength, their chaos, their healing, their victory—ALL OF IT. I was emotionally unwell, spiritually checked, and fully invested 😩📚✨

Also—still requesting a dragon like Keg because clearly I need divine guidance with a little extra intimidation on the side 🐉😂

NOW LET’S TALK ABOUT THAT SPICE—because LORD HAVE MERCY 🥵🔥 I was out here clenching, pausing, rereading like “ain’t no way they just did that” 😩 The tension??? The NEED??? The way Donavyn wants Bren like she is his entire existence??? Yeah… unhinged. Absolutely feral. And I ate every single second of it 😮‍💨🔥

Protective. Possessive. Devoted. Consuming.
Donavyn, sir… you set the STANDARD.

AND THEN THAT ENDING?!?!?!?!?!?
EXCUSE ME??? HOW SWAY?!?!?!!! 🤯😩

WHAT DO YOU MEAN I HAVE TO WAIT?!?!?
IT’S NOT EVEN OUT YET?!?!?

Yeah… no. Life is actually disrespectful for that. I am UNWELL, UNSTABLE, AND IMPATIENT 😭🔥📚

OMG !! What did I just read?

No spoilers!
But holy hell those last few chapters will have your heart pumping and at the edge of your seat!!
Thank goodness Aimee Lynn is releasing the final installment of Shadowborne in a few weeks because I would not be able to live with that cliffhanger for months!!! Buckle up fellow readers we are in for one hell of a ride!!

Shadowborne: Fang tho tedious at times with Donnavyns insecurities and trust issues regarding Bren, it definitely set the stage for the last book. I found some parts of this book very slow and some parts felt a little rushed. But still an enjoyable read. There’s a lot of personal growth in Bren in this book and you feel so proud and find cheering her on when she finally puts her foot down and stand up for herself.
There are so many unanswered questions that are rattling around in my brain, especially if you think about some of the interactions between Bren and Tarah from medical from the first book compared to now, especially with the extra 🌶️🌶️ scenes added in book 3 as Bren and Donnavyn’s desire for each other grows as so does their mate bond. Think about it and you may have the same questions…. If you know you know 😉
But I’m sure all will be revealed in book 4…… well hopefully!! It’s an amazing series, I love it! I’m sure I’ll be in a book hangover and a book slump once the series has ended. If you haven’t started the series yet, unsure about it because it sounds a little like fourth wing ( it does have some similar elements but it’s so very different you’ll be surprised) or waiting for the series to be complete before you start reading it. I highly recommend, you’ll thank
Me later! 😘

I read 3 of the 4 books and could not put one down. I binged these books and am in serious anticipation of book 4 releasing this week!
Bren's story is a beautiful "beauty from ashes" journey. One that we read about in book 1, learn intimate details about in book 2, and continue to be haunted by in book 3. There's also a lot of emphasis on how women can be equal partners, but require doing things in their own way. Embracing what makes a woman, who she is compare to a man.
Bren bonds to a female dragon and finds a true friend, ally, confidant, and soul bond with her.
Donavan is a savior, a fixer, a leader, and protector. He is the general of the Furyknight and bonded to the head dragon of the herd. Donavyn faces the challenges of being his own god, taking his life in his own hands rather than trusting his Creator.
Bren and Donavyn's relationship for book 1 and much of book 2 is so fragile, and explosive at times. One fighting the need to not burden and hide herself in shame and keeping herself small. The other fights to fix her problems and never face hurt again. He wants to see her shine, but not at the cost of her safety.
These books tackle hard hurts of the heart and mind and what it looks like to heal from them. Having the right people. The plot is steady and engaging. Momentum was never lost. There is lots of conflict. The stories are so engaging.
Book з ended in a cliffhange!

⚠️ Check Trigger Warnings

🖤 : Honestly if it wasn’t for the cliff hanger at then end is stop reading this series all together. I liked the first two books despite how influenced it was by Catholicism, but holy crap was this book over doing it. Every other page mentioned god. It was too much. It felt like it was being shoved down your throat. Also, Donavyn’s personality was insufferable this book. He was so controlling, gas lighting, and low key sexist. Bren should dump him if he continues this way.

📚 : This third book in the Emberquell Academy series. Bren is the first female to attain the coveted rank of Furyknight—the legendary society of men chosen and bonded by dragons, and trained for war. Bren throws herself into her new duties, only to discover that the Furyknights also hide secrets under their wings. As Bren fights to prove her worth as a spy, her past emerges to ignite a white-hot fire. Will she survive them or be burnt?

Fang is the first book in the Emberquell Order duet, but really it's book three in the overall Emberquell series, which appears to be four books long. The series is an age-gap dragon romantasy with an FMC dealing with trauma. The series has everything I love; however, book 3 has fallen flat for me. There has been very little plot progression, which means the book is full of repetitive conversations and Bren dealing with her trauma. Unfortunately, this leads to long, boring stretches throughout the book, with only occasional interesting plot points, and I'm not sure I will read book 4. It doesn't come out for a month, so I have time to think about it, and I decided how interested I am in how the series ends. It's disappointing because the story started with such promise, and should have been a trilogy, not a double duet.

epic continuation!

Book 3 was epically written and I couldn’t put it down. I do see where the plot stretches and stagnates A LITTLE, but it didn’t ruin anything. The pace was perfect. The relationships between the dragons and their riders (especially the MC’s) grow and strengthen. Even though Donovan’s been bonded w Kgosi for 22 years, there is still much for him to learn. Especially having a mate w a traumatic past. He struggles w it but he’s working through it. Brennan has grown much in her journey (although it’s only been months) but she’s determined to become stronger.

There’s intrigue and war on the horizon and that ending!!! And if you read the excerpt for book 4!!! GAHHH!!! April 23rd can’t get here fast enough. Very good read. This is a great dragon romantasy that you don’t want to miss out on! Loved it!

Some may have enjoyed this…

But unfortunately I did not. I felt like the king did through the whole book and wondered why they hadn’t left on their mission.
If you’re looking for spice, there is plenty of it but I started skipping over it.
If you’re looking for internal conflict and in depth self analysis, Donavyn had plenty of that. However, he struggled with the same thing repeatedly through the whole book.
I was really excited to read this book but nothing much happened except for the last chapters. This book was over 500 pages and I believe that there were probably five chapters of this book that were needed. I really struggled to get through it and now I’m not sure that I want to pick up the next book.

Review

I have been waiting months so excited for this book and so sad that it did not live up to Flameborne Chosen. The smut for smut and recycled bemoaning the situation made the time between actual plot points drag on. This book could have easily been half the length that it is. The ending was no real suprise and stops off mid scene.

What I enjoy so much about Aimee's work is how real she can write the emotion and healing of a trauma, but this reads like a serial where we need to constantly rehash previous chapters to remember what happened 20 minutes ago. Yes I will finish the series to see the ending, but that will be it.

Turmoil

Book 3 is full of turmoil for Donavyn; between himself and Bren, his King, his Queen, and his dragon all because of his secret for revenge and letting fear for Bren override his trust in her. While the love and passion between Donavyn and Bren and the wise advice of his dragon help to overcome much of the conflict, the mission the bonded pairs are on makes for a very unsettling cliff hanger at the end of this book. I impatiently wait for the next installment to see if love, honor and goodness will triumph.

O M G!

The action just does not stop! From the interaction with the Queen, to Donavyn’s struggle with Bren’s decision to become the James Bond of the Furyknights, to the mission into Fryehold. It’s a regular whirlwind!
There are things amiss in Fyrehold, missing dragons, lack of Furyknights and it’s up to Bren and Donavyn to figure out what’s going on. And the ending of book three?? You don’t want to miss this ending!!!I can’t wait to read the final book!

way too religious

Love the characters. Love the plot. Cannot stand the sermons and constant thread of "let god take care of it because you're a weak human who doesn't know any better". Very annoyed at the religious part that wasn't as strong in the first book. Tone it down. Or give fair warning that this is a book that contains a lot of sermons.
I would have given five stars if it weren't for the religious bent throughout the book.

once again, confused, if this should be a four or a five

This book gave us the depth to both characters that they have a lacked the entire series and the ending was a 10 out of 10 for me I can’t not. This is a weird situation were I will give them five stars just for the depth but the storyline probably could’ve been shorter. They did not need to fuck every fucking chapter.

Dragon bonds

The FMC was surprised to be bonded to a dragon, the first time a dragon has bonded to a female. Add to that her dragon’s bonded mate, the General, has bonded to her. Quite a family affair. The story follows her as she trains to be a dragon rider, struggling as she tries to physically keep up with all the males.
