I didn't like this as much as Sharp Objects, it paled in comparison. The characters were all unlikeable, which would have been fine if they'd at least been somewhat interesting but sadly, most of them were dull. The murder mystery/investigation was mildly engrossing, but the reveal at the end was majorly disappointing.
-What's what: Libby Day has been living off the money donated to her after her family was killed by her brother (Ben) in a satanic ritual 25 years earlier. Unfortunately for Libby that money has run out, so when Libby gets an offer to speak about the murders at a 'kill club' (a group of people obsessed with murders) for money, she agrees. The 'kill club' believe Ben is innocent, and Libby begins having doubts too, so she agrees to talk to other suspects (as long as she gets paid) for them. That leads to Libby meeting/interviewing various people from her/Ben's past.
-I disliked Libby intensely. She was lazy, self-pitying, bitter, jealous, constantly in denial, and stuck in the past. She hadn't worked a day in her life, and instead lived off the money that was donated to her as a child/teen. Apparently she was too depressed to work, but it seemed more like she was too lazy and bone idle to have a job. She wanted to live off hand outs and have no responsibility whatsoever for the rest of her life, she was an entitled cow and expected people to donate money to her even though she was an adult. Yea, her family were killed but it was 25 flipping years ago — why would anyone donate money to a healthy adult who should be more than capable of looking after herself? They only gave her money in the first place because she was young and alone. Why did she expect people to carry on giving her money when her tragedy was so long ago? How did she not realise that they'd rather give money to more recent tragedies and more desperate people? It was like she thought she was the only person ever to have suffered, ugh. She didn't try to work or sort her life out, she did nothing for 13 years, she was a lazy little git.
The most despicable thing about Libby was that she lied in court and told everyone that she saw her brother kill her family, she didn't. At the time she was only around 7 years of age, and she was more or less forced by lawyers/psychiatrists/whatnot to say those things because they wanted a conviction, she went through with it because they convinced her that Ben was guilty… I don't blame her for that. But when she was older she carried on with the lie and refused to entertain the possibility that her brother was innocent. He only got sent down because of her evidence, and she knew that but she still thought it was a-okay to let him rot in prison when he could have been innocent. When she was old enough, she should have taken action especially when she realised that her evidence was based on what other people told her and made her believe. But the silly cow was too selfish to do that, and she found it too hard to face up to reality. Never mind, that her brother could have been wrongly imprisoned, she was fine with that… But what she wasn't fine with was facing up to the truth and dealing with the past. Ugh, Libby was horrible, she didn't have one redeeming quality about her.
-Young Ben was a wimpy perverted loser. All he did was moan about being poor, which would have been fine if he wasn't moaning about it ALL the time. I hated him.
He deserved to be in jail, he was just as responsible for his sister's murder as his girlfriend, Diondra. He let his 11 year old sister get killed, he stood by and watched his psycho girlfriend strangle her to death. He didn't even want her dead but he was so weak he didn't even try to stop his girlfriend. He was to blame for his sister's death more than her actual murderer, he was her big brother, he should have protected her, instead he bought a psycho into their lives, if he wasn't involved with her she would have still been alive. Him being in jail for 25 years wasn't long enough.
Also, him making out with a 11 year old girl was fucked up, he was a paedo in the making.
Older Ben was a fool, why was he protecting Diondra for all those years? He was such an idiot. Did he not realise that she wouldn't go to prison for him? But she was cool with him going to prison for her?
Oh and him acting like he was wronged pissed me off, he had no right to make Libby feel guilty when he knew full well that he was to blame for his other sister's death. He could have saved her but he chose to watch her be brutally killed, he was irredeemable.
-Patty was a fucking idiot. She was a bloody rubbish mum — her kids practically lived in poverty all because she was too proud to sell her failing farm. If she really gave a fuck about them she would have put them first and started afresh somewhere else. She cared more about her farm than the well being of her kids.
How could she possibly think that getting a hit-man for herself would help her children?! She had four kids, they needed her, especially because their dad was a drunk, violent, uncaring, alcoholic loser. Why would them having their mum die be a good thing?! No-one else would love them like she would, she knew that but the silly cow still went ahead with her dumb plan. She was a selfish idiot.
Also, Patty agreed to let someone kill her in her own home but it never crossed her mind that it could be dangerous for her kids, did she not think her kids could end up seeing or hearing something and thus cause the assassin to target them to? What a thicko.
-Patty's sister, Diane, pissed me off. She took Libby in after her mum and sisters died but when she got sick of her she palmed her off on other relatives. It was disgusting. Sure, Libby did a lot of messed up things but she had a fucked up childhood and needed love and support. When she took on Libby, she should have stuck by her. What kind of person abandons a traumatised child they promised to look after just because said child is hard work? What a cow.
-Runner was a bastard and a half. His kids die, his other kid ends up in jail, and his other surviving kid needs looking after… But does he do the right thing? No, the fucker couldn't even clean up his act to help his youngest child get through the loss of her family.
He didn't even feel upset or guilty about what happened to his family, he didn't stop to think that if he'd been a better father, his children could have been healthy and happy. Instead he blamed everyone else, and thought that he was hard done by, and acted like he was some sort of martyr. Ugh. He was a hypocritical, abusive, mother-fucking bastard. He was responsible for his family's death just as much as their actual murderers.
-It was ridiculous that at all the 'evidence' against Ben just so happened to coincide perfectly with his family's murder — like Diondra scratching his face before sex, him hanging around Krissy's bin/locker at school, Krissy accusing him of rape, Diondra putting animal meat in his locker and Ben not cleaning it out, him claiming he was into satan/satanic rites the day before the murders just so he could seem cool. Yea, it all seemed rather improbable.
-The reveal was unbelievably far fetched. I didn't believe for a second that the Day family happened to be killed by two unconnected/different murderers not just on the same day but at the exact same time. And then there was more ridiculousness, with both the killers of the Day family being outed on the same day 25 years later. One killer (Diondra) was discovered by Libby, and the other (the professional assassin) happened to screw up one of his jobs, get caught by the police, and admit his many crimes (including the Day murders). Yea right, after years of nothing, the experienced assassin who's always managed to avoid the police gets caught and admits everything on the very day that the other Day murderer is found out. Bullshit.
-I thought it was dumb that Diondra resorted to murdering Ben's sister just because she found out about her pregnancy. She was planning to run away anyway so who cares if everyone found out she was pregnant.
-It was laughable that Diondra's daughter also turned out to be a wannabe psychotic murderer with no remorse. I just didn't believe that both mother and daughter would so easily kill people just so they could avoid trouble. It was weird how BOTH of them had no conscious or morals.
-The 'Free Ben' women were nuts. Why were they so obsessed with men in jail? Did they think they could fix them or some bullshit? Ugh, the way they treated Libby was disgusting.
-WTF?! Since when do a bunch of ten year old girls cry rape?! Why are ALL the female characters (no matter what age) in Gillian Flynn's books liars, cruel fuckers, attention seekers, and manipulative bitches?!
All in all, I wasn't impressed. The characters were all unlikeable and dull, and everything about the murders/murderers was far fetched and hard to believe.
