Nobles compete for personal gain. Cults and guilds bleed the populace dry. Mages chase power in relics of ages past. Even the Royal Family strains beneath the weight of their crumbling legacy.
Crown Prince Thaun wears duty like a chain, his bladework masking a soul worn thin by melancholy. His cousin Heizl, the Emperor’s bastard niece, wields her own power – and has no patience left for the Court’s self-serving hypocrisy.
Beneath the surface, something ancient stirs. Relegated to legend and superstition, an ancient dragon is sought by those who might gain from its awakening. As Heizl and Thaun are pushed deeper into a web of ritual and conspiracy, they must confront betrayal, sacrifice, and the cost of their ambitions. If they fail, their crumbling Empire won’t be the only thing to break from its own unrest.
Huw Carrington is an indie author who has entertained friends and strangers alike through TTRPG worlds and stories. He released his debut novel, Tooth & Nail, in 2025.
When not enjoying life with his family, friends, or fiction, Huw spends his time practising jiu jitsu, telling dad jokes, and railing against the growing injustices of our world.
He also dislikes writing about himself in the third-person.
Full disclosure — I was lucky enough to read this before publication day, but I’m still thrilled to share a few thoughts, because it’s a wonderful book!
H. Carrington has built a warm, lived-in world, with a family conflict at its heart that weaves masterfully through the entire narrative.
The battles are compelling and exciting, but my favourite thing by far is the dialogue — it’s sharp, believable, and full of character.
Tooth and Nail is a fantasy novel featuring interesting, diverse and interesting characters. I enjoyed reading it and at the end of each chapter I felt compelled to read the next; eager to see what would happen to the characters. I enjoyed trying to guess at how each piece of the puzzle would connect and who I could trust.
This is the best fantasy book I’ve read since Sandersons Mistborn trilogy and really looking forward to the next book in the series.
Really interesting plot, varied characters, great magic system which feels very different to anything else I’ve read before. If you’re a fan of Sanderson or, to a lesser extent Feist, I think you’ll love this.
It took me two sittings (and 4 cups of coffee) finish this book and I enjoyed every minute. I'm usually really picky about fantasy novels I got lost in this really quickly.
Great world and character building. Loved the magic system! Cannot wait for the next book!!!!!
