Hi, I’m Paige Brooks—and I write psychological thrillers that dig deep into memory, fear, and the secrets we bury.

Thrillers have always been my favorite kind of story—the kind that leave you unsettled, second-guessing reality, and flipping pages late into the night. The Cage Within is the first in a growing collection of twisty, emotionally layered suspense stories that I can’t wait to share with readers who love that slow-burn tension and eerie atmosphere.

I’ve been married to my husband for over 30 years, and we have one incredible son and two slightly spoiled dogs. We recently moved from the West Coast to the East Coast—a change that definitely inspired the quiet unease and creeping tension in my writing.

If you enjoy thrillers with sharp turns, emotional depth, and that feeling that something’s just out of reach… then I think we’re going to get along just fine.

Hidden in the Walls is a twisting, suspenseful ride. Trying to suss out what is real, imagined or false memory makes your head spin. The unreliability of Claire/Lena is a significant factor to the story. Claire knows that her perception of events is shaky at best, and as her memories of childhood begin to surface the tension grows.

At times it is difficult to put things into perspective because of the strange shifting of time-lines, memory and who Claire is. This may be an intentional writing style used by Brooks to help the reader experience the confusion of the characters.

The slow burn pace of suspense was done perfectly. At times I had to walk away from reading just to clear my head. The secrets that were slowly uncovered kept me coming back. Many clear answers are not given.

Advice to the reader; do not try to figure things out, just enjoy the moment of fear. At about the halfway point the story began to make me think of Dennis Lehane's "Shutter Island," and I am not clear why?

I loved the idea for this book. A creepy inherited house, buried secrets, memories slowly coming back. Unfortunately, it wasn’t written well. There was talk of an aunt who died and left the house but she drops off as a character and another character is introduced as having lived there and raising the children. There’s a lot of inconsistencies that bothered me and the timeline is never clear. Another random character is introduced and seems like it could be important and then is also dropped off randomly. Amazing idea for a story but it didn’t come together for me.

The story is overall a good one but it was a big struggle to get thru. The spooky ghosty parts were really good. I was really excited about the premise of the book and it has great potential. I'm going to reread it in a few months and I'll redo my review then.

This book was really hard to follow. There were some formatting things that might have been intentional but made things a bit confusing - written out audio italicized but then the MC's thoughts about what she'd just heard was also in italics and in the same paragraph so it looked like it was part of the audio. A hand written note that was not italicized or separated from the rest of the text in anyway so it took reading three or four times to figure out where the note ended. One of the characters seems to have taken on 3 different roles within the book and I do not remember reading when they changed from one to the other.

There was also no mention of time. What looked like was happening in one day could have taken a week but there was no mention of time passing.

The beginning of it reminded me a lot of Home Before Dark by Riley Sager.

There are so many great, unique ideas in this book. I had a bit of a time keeping up with things as they happened. The story is really interesting because it is so different.

HIDDEN IN THE WALLS by Paige Brooks is my introduction to this author. This is a story filled with whispers, dark shadows, someone or something watching, always there, never showing itself. The bumps and knocks of an old house will never sound the same after reading this story. You will find it difficult to separate fear from reality or dreams from forgotten memories.

Claire has returned to town to prepare her deceased aunt's home for sale. But forgotten memories and dreams have her doubting her sanity. Strangers call her Lena, not a name she really remembers. Even though she lived here till she was eighteen, some of the rooms dont feel familiar. Then strange notes, things moved, strange sounds, the house settling or someone walking around?

I didn't like that the transitions in the story aren't always defined. I've had to stop and realise that the character or plot had moved forward (ex. upstairs researching, then sitting at dowstairs table reading).  Otherwise, this is a we'll written story.

Also, while this is a good thriller, it just seems to me that there is a theme or trend of writing stories about old homes with strange passages, tunnels and whispers in the walls along with manipulated or forgotten memories. Different authors, same story outline. I've had to stop and make sure I hadn't read the story before.

Claire inherits an old house from her aunt—the same house she fled 15 years ago. Her plan is simple: renovate, sell, and move on. But as we know, the best laid plans rarely go smoothly.

This psychological thriller sets out with a promising premise and an intriguingly eerie atmosphere. The plot has potential, and the story itself could have been compelling. Unfortunately, it's undermined by a slew of inconsistencies, continuity errors, and implausible moments that pulled me out of the narrative time and again. I found myself scribbling notes on these issues more than immersing in the suspense, which ultimately dulled the experience.

And then there’s the phrase “my breath catches”—used no fewer than 41 times. It became so repetitive I started anticipating its next appearance like a twisted game of literary whack-a-mole.
I won’t delve further to avoid spoilers, but suffice it to say: if you're looking for a thriller with psychological depth and narrative cohesion, this one may not deliver.

Creepy house? Check. Secret passageways? Check. Unreliable memories and chilling twists? Double check.

Hidden in the Walls is an eerie, twisty gothic thriller that kept me hooked from start to finish. Claire returns to her late aunt’s coastal estate, planning only to fix it up and move on, but the house has other ideas. From the start, unsettling memories stir, a mysterious stranger claims to know her, and a too-curious neighbor seems to be watching her every move. When hidden rooms and secret passageways start to emerge, Claire is forced to question her past, her sanity, and even her own identity.
I loved the creepy atmosphere—the house felt alive, full of lies and secrets buried behind the walls. The tension built steadily as Claire’s grip on reality began to slip, and I enjoyed the twists surrounding memory manipulation and long-buried tragedy. A few parts pushed believability and got a little repetitive with Claire’s inner doubt, but overall, it was gripping and bingeable, with a chilling payoff.
A haunting, atmospheric read for fans of gothic thrillers with unreliable narrators and houses that hold more secrets than answers.

3.5 stars for me. Claire got house in will from her aunt . Thinking she was here only one summer, it supposed to fast job, clean the place and sold it. She meet her aunt neighbour Sylvie who speaks in riddles and call her Lena, and groundkeeper Evan who's full of secrets. Nothing make sense when she hears weird noises in the house, footsteps and some stuff that are moved in different places. Some memories start to comeback, and Claire must to figure it out what is the truth that she forgot.

Who is Lena?
What Evan and Sylvie hiding from her?
Is the truth better be forgotten?
Is Claire alone in the house?

My first book by this author, keep me turning pages ,and guessing to the end. Twists were shocking and the house was just creepy.

If you like psychological thriller with twists and secrets at every corner ,this book will not disappoint.

Thank you booksprout and author for arc.

Claire inherits her late aunt’s coastal home—a place she fled years ago and never intended to revisit. But the house hasn’t forgotten her. As she navigates its decaying halls, sealed doors, and shifting memories, Claire begins to question not just her past, but her identity. The novel unfolds as a slow-burning psychological thriller, rich in atmosphere and emotional tension.
What Worked Well-
Atmosphere & Setting: The house is vividly rendered—moody, tactile, and almost sentient. The opening chapters immediately immerse the reader in a world of mildew, salt, and memory.
Emotional Depth: Claire’s internal journey is compelling. Her fear, confusion, and gradual unraveling are handled with restraint and nuance.
Symbolism: Recurring motifs like the porcelain rabbit and the humming lullaby add emotional weight and thematic cohesion.
Dialogue: Conversations with Sylvia and Evan are layered and cryptic, enhancing the mystery without feeling forced.

Awesome read from the first page to the last with intrigue and anticipation and terror building on every page!!
I absolutely loved how the author paid precise detail to descriptions and characterization with remarkably colloquial turns of phrase and realism, which made the short, staccato sentences really drive and compelling the reader through intense scenes; I really felt the sense of panic and sweat and fear of the protagonist through terrifying events and explorations!!
Let me state I have not read many "haunted house" books for about twenty years since I read "House" do written by Ted Denied and Frank Peretti; that book broke the mold so that every other haunted house book seemed to me to pale in comparison, coming off as hokey and juvenile! But Paige Brooke has here given a truly adult read that excellent in psychological twists and intrigue!! I can't wait to read more of her books and recommend you do so also!!

Paige Brooks weaves a moody, gothic-tinged thriller where the house itself becomes the most unsettling character. When Claire returns to her late aunt’s coastal estate, what begins as a slow burn quickly fills with unease, fragments of forgotten memories, and the sense that someone—or something—is watching.

The first half lingers in atmosphere and emotional distortion, which may feel slow for some, but it’s intentional: Brooks draws readers into Claire’s fractured headspace until reality itself feels slippery. By the final act, the story snaps into high gear, with hidden rooms, cryptic neighbors, and a stranger who insists on shared history colliding into a frenzy of revelations.

What sets this book apart is its exploration of memory as both fragile and dangerous. Twists arrive in quick succession, revealing manipulation, erasure, and long-buried truths. If you enjoy thrillers that simmer before boiling over into shocking chaos, Hidden in the Walls delivers a haunting payoff.

I received an ARC and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review

The story begins with Claire arriving at a house which she inherited from her aunt. Her intentions were to clean the house and get it ready to be sold. Thongs did not want to work out as she had planned. It seemed that the house had secrets that needed to be told. Claire spends a great deal of time trying to discover how things she is starting to remember relate to this house. She winds up eventually getting help from Evan, an individual who helped her aunt maintain the house.

Read along and discover what items Claired discovered and how each one seemed to lead her to looking for more. Learn how Sylvia, a friend of her aunt, played a role in the story. Read the exciting conclusion to get a clear understanding what Claire’s memories reflected in the end.

This story is quite spooky and is not what you think of as a thriller. It is well worth the read!

What do you hide from your past?
Claire has to go back to her Aunt's house to prepare it to sell. She was there in summer, and other times during her childhood. When she gets there, though, things are strange. She starts to have these weird 'feelings'... what is going on?
To say that she takes a 'Trip down memory lane', is an understatement!
This story is written to reveal what Claire is thinking and feeling when she acknowledges other aspects of her past.
This is a story that I had to keep reading to find out what really happened back then, and what is going on now!
Thank you, Paige Brooks, for a great story that helped me stretch my imagination.

I was given the opportunity to read an ARC copy of Hidden in the Walls.

I love a creepy house that hide secrets and this book delivers as far as hidden pasts go. It was twisty and kept me wanting to turn the page and learn more about Claire and her memories. I liked the feeling of wondering what was real and what was being imagined. That sense of wait...what?!

While I enjoyed this story and the idea behind it, I found it needed a little work on execution. I felt like some details were discussed, but I couldn't remember ever learning that information. It created some hiccups when reading.

This was my first book by this author. Although I wasn't blown away by this novel, I do plan to check out another read from Brooks as I did have fun with this one. I'm giving it 3.5 stars.

What a creepy story!

When Claire inherits the old house from her aunt, she has a plan—fix it, sell it, move on. However, that’s not exactly what happens as she slowly starts to remember things about the house, about her aunt, about Evan too. The writing style Paige Brooks uses in this story fit perfectly and definitely had Gothic vibes. Yes, the plot was a bit convoluted, but it works. It puts us in Claire’s shoes as she slowly remembers things. This is not a story I would like to read alone at night in the dark, that’s for sure, but it brings out all the feelings and emotions it’s supposed to.

Claire heads to her great aunt's coastal house with one thing in mind: fix it, sell it, and get back to her life. However once inside the house, Claire has bits and pieces of memories (maybe) return. People in town insist they've met before and Claire is having a hard time sorting out the truth from town gossip. Also the house is revealing secrets like a secret passage way and rooms that were previously unknown to Claire. What really happened in the past? Who in the present is desperately trying to keep it hidden? This thriller makes the reader question things they thought they already knew and takes them on a breathtaking ride. Fantastic read!.

At first, the narrative seems simple: just an old inherited house, in a place where no one would want to stay. The impression is that, after the sale, the protagonist's life will return to normal.

But, as the title suggests, there is something in the subtext — and it is not just the usual sensations of an abandoned house.

Like a snowball, each detail can bring to light what was comfortably forgotten. This suspense envelops not only the character but also the reader, who begins to question every memory, every silence, and every shadow that seems to inhabit the old house.

I enjoyed this book overall. I loved the atmosphere of the house itself. The author did a great job of setting the tone. You could almost feel the misery and despair in the house. The creepy neighbor was a wonderful character.

Things got a little confusing and muddy when it came to the kids and their history in the house. In some parts, I wasn't exactly sure how many kids there actually were. This could have been intentional to show how Claire was losing her grip. However, it was hard to follow and took me out of the story. There were a few plot holes, but I liked the premise of the story.

I will read more from this author.

This story had me hooked from the beginning. Even after reading the entire thing, I'm still questioning everything that happened. The author takes the reader on a brain-bending, haunting mystery with twists and turns that you don't see coming. You're not sure who to trust, if this is all in Claire's mind, or maybe she's not really there.
If you love psychological thrillers, this one will keep you on your toes to the very end.

This book manages to give you goosebumps from the very first page. Beautifully written and masterfully paced, it has stellar imagery and a dreamlike quality to the words that fit the story, although at times it distracts from the plot and makes it difficult to follow the storyline. So many twists and turns and changes of names that it makes your head spin. Enjoy the ride and go with the flow, but do not hope for a satisfying conclusion. If you like crossovers between ghost stories and thrillers, you'll like this novel.

Hidden in the Walls by Paige Brooks is an eerie, atmospheric thriller that keeps you second-guessing everything right alongside Claire. The coastal estate is more than just a creepy backdrop—it’s a living, breathing character that holds dark secrets within its walls. With hidden rooms, unsettling neighbors, and a stranger who knows too much, this story blurs the line between memory and madness. Twisty, chilling, and impossible to put down, it’s a haunting tale that lingers long after the last page.

Hidden in the Walls by Paige Brooks is a fantastic psychological thriller that I thoroughly enjoyed. While the story builds slowly, it's this gradual pace that makes the "aha!" and "what the heck?" moments so impactful. The book successfully creates a spooky, slightly confusing atmosphere that keeps you guessing. As you read on, all the seemingly disparate threads of the plot weave together, culminating in a satisfying and clever resolution. Brooks truly excels at building suspense and delivering a story where every detail counts.

If you want an example of how to turn a possible 5 Star rating into a 2 Star rating, then here it is.
Correct formatting is crucial for any story and woefully lacking here, to the point where reading was downright painful. Such a shame, because the actual story was very good.
If this had been an ARC, I would have been a bit more lenient, although not by much, given how bad the formatting is. However, this is an actual bought copy and should never have been offered for sale in this condition.

This book was non stop suspense. Very descriptive, never knowing what would happen next. Unfortunately, this read like an advanced English class assignment. Every movement by the main character had pages of imagined terror & mysterious happenings. Then followed by more pages of the same. There was less than five pages, total, that actually had information for the story.

I received an ARC in exchange for a fair review.

Very slow burn told in a first person narrative. I found it difficult to really get into the book. The narrative felt like an old black and white soft horror movie. I rated it as fairly as I could given how difficult it was for me personally to get into.

Wow. I would give this book 10 stars if I could. It sucked me right in and kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. It is hard for a book to do that start to finish. I have always loved psychological thrillers, and this one did not disappoint. Full of twists and turns and guesses as to who did what. This would make a great movie plot!
