Nic is a confused teenager in a future dystopian America. After moving west with his mother, he encounters the school bully; and manages to make a few new friends, though most simply ignore him. It’s not until a girl, Willow, enters his world that his life begins to improve.
Nic and Willow discover the world around them is far different than what they have been taught. A shared class project on the history of artificial intelligence leads to a series of strange events culminating in a fight for their lives. Through their adventures together, Nic and Willow begin to share feelings for each other beyond friendship.
A series of secrets thrust Nic and Willow into an effort to win back humanity as they work with an underground organization, fighting against A.I. control. Soon, they learn the truth about the world in which they live.
Later, the clandestine organization is devastated by an explosion and the disappearance of their enigmatic elder. With the enemy’s discovery of their secret location and the destruction of their headquarters, the area is immediately abandoned. Nic and Willow reluctantly return to society as they wait for further instructions. Together, they wonder what will come next.
