Yuu Watase (渡瀬悠宇) is a Japanese shoujo manga-ka. She is known for her works Fushigi Yūgi, Alice 19th, Ceres: The Celestial Legend, Fushigi Yūgi Genbu Kaiden and Absolute Boyfriend. She likes all music, except heavy metal and old traditional music.

She received the Shogakukan Manga Award for shōjo for Ceres, Celestial Legend in 1997. Since writing her debut short story "Pajama de Ojama" ("An Intrusion in Pajamas"), Watase has created more than 80 compiled volumes of short stories and continuing series. Because of her frequent use of beautiful male characters in her works, she is widely regarded in circles[which?] as a bishōnen manga artist.[citation needed] In October 2008, Watase began her first shōnen serialization, Arata: The Legend in Weekly Shōnen Sunday.
Her name is romanized as "Yû Watase" in earlier printings of Viz Media's publications of Fushigi Yūgi, Alice 19th, and Ceres, The Celestial Legend, while in Viz Media's Fushigi Yūgi Genbu Kaiden and Absolute Boyfriend her name is romanized as "Yuu Watase". In Chuang Yi's English-language versions of Fushigi Yugi (spelled without a macron or circumflex), her name is romanized as "Yu Watase".

Younger me really enjoyed this series. It has a fun art style, the fight choreography is good, and it had an interesting premise. Now that I've matured a little and developed taste, I can see how trashy this series has gotten, if it wasn't this trashy from the start.
I can handle the cheesy language and predictable storytelling - that sort of thing comes with the territory when you're reading manga. It's the obvious disrespect Watase has for her female characters that ticks me off. This series couldn't pass the Bechdel Test if it included 40 more female leads and halved the amount of the males. There is not a single woman in this volume that does not have an incredibly revealing outfit meant to show off the goods. In fact, half the time they're not wearing clothes at all. I expect the same sort of sleazy excuses for nudity from Ikki Tousen, something I hope I never have to say again.
I used to love Arata: The Legend, and now it just makes me angry. I don't think I'll be revisiting this series unless it's absolutely necessary for my Goodreads goal.

In this volume we finally get Arata's necessary self-discovery training journey. It's the equivalent of Luke's trip to Dagobah. Arata even has help from his own Yoda (an old yet mysterious friend). We also get to see the gods that live in hayagami, which is cool.

The story is interesting in concept but the realization isn't perfect. Things are a bit difficult for me to follow at times. Too many random booms (made this volume a bust for me). There are also a lot of half-naked women. Everyone in the early volumes was fully clothed but the lack of clothing is definitely becoming the norm in this series. As the series goes on, the average amount of clothing is decreasing.

This got bad. I’ll keep going, but not for much longer if it’s like this now.

So my rating for this one is slightly confusing. I liked the second half of this volume a LOT. However, the first half seemed to be a lot of pointless fanservice involving the females.

This one was ok, but compared to the others it was a bit dull. I do like the new powers that Arata has received. Also I'm glad to see Kanate. I really missed seeing him. He was funny. I hope he does not choose to demonize himself.

Hmm, a bit boring, this volume. (The fight-yourself thing had been done way too many times before, and this was way overboard with the fanservice!)
