Younger me really enjoyed this series. It has a fun art style, the fight choreography is good, and it had an interesting premise. Now that I've matured a little and developed taste, I can see how trashy this series has gotten, if it wasn't this trashy from the start.
I can handle the cheesy language and predictable storytelling - that sort of thing comes with the territory when you're reading manga. It's the obvious disrespect Watase has for her female characters that ticks me off. This series couldn't pass the Bechdel Test if it included 40 more female leads and halved the amount of the males. There is not a single woman in this volume that does not have an incredibly revealing outfit meant to show off the goods. In fact, half the time they're not wearing clothes at all. I expect the same sort of sleazy excuses for nudity from Ikki Tousen, something I hope I never have to say again.
I used to love Arata: The Legend, and now it just makes me angry. I don't think I'll be revisiting this series unless it's absolutely necessary for my Goodreads goal.
