He may be her unexpected gift in this friends-to-lovers Mean Girls-inspired small town holiday romance.
Summer Michaels just wants to raise her son, get lost in a good book, and get through a shift at the café without her boss playing matchmaker. While she’s the single mom her boss wants to set up, to everyone else, she’s still their high school bully.
Except to sexy brewery owner Todd Kruger, she’s more than the village’s former mean girl. The one-time band geek and reformed prom queen have formed an unlikely friendship.
Though Summer isn’t just a friend, and she’s no longer the girl he had a crush on in high school. She’s the woman he’s falling for, and he’s the man she won’t let herself have. After a year of tiptoeing around their feelings, one dance at a wintery-themed wedding changes everything.
Summer debates whether she is ready for the next step with Todd. There’s her son to think about. The impact of her reputation on Todd and his thriving business. The residue from the relationship [GB1] with her abusive ex. Not to mention the secret she carries that could threaten the life Todd wants to build with her and her son.
Will Summer unwrap her heart to build that life with Todd, or will she do what she’s always done—hide?
With a name like Melissa Whitney she had two choices become a Real Housewife or a romance author. Sorry Andy Cohen, she's chose romance!
A Jane Austen fangirl, Melissa hails from Western New York, but currently lives in Southern California with her husband and rescue pugs. When she's not brewing the perfect cup of tea, hunting for a delicious pastry, or traveling with her husband, she's writing swoony and steamy romance novels.
Melissa explores themes of disability, mental health, trauma, grief/loss, and family in her emotionally heartfelt and comedic stories. She often says, "Life isn't a romcom nor a high drama. It's somewhere in-between and so are my stories." As a legally blind woman and trauma survivor, Melissa taps into her own lived experience and her masters in social work to craft thoughtful/sensitive stories that delve into deeper themes, while still offering the swoon, steam, and humor that make us fall in love with a good romance.
This is a standalone in a series and the first I’ve read by this author. I will definitely be reading the first two so I can pull all the characters together.
This book was raw and real. The author bases part of the story not only from home but some depictions of truth. She’s also a Mean Girls fanatic so lots of references 😂
Summer was Regina George - she was the mean girl in high school. She moves away after school and lives the big girl city life in NYC - the riches and royals when she started dating Max. However, Max wasn’t who she thought she was and 10 years after leaving, she moves back home. Only this time, she’s running back with baggage.
Coming from a small, the past isn’t always forgotten and the Summer she is now isn’t the Summer she was in high school. She constantly tries to apologize for the past but she can’t seem to get herself out of living there. She won’t let herself move on and be happy - enter Todd.
Todd is the cutest little ginger cinnamon roll. He’s so caring and patient with Summer. Not only her but also her son, Liam, that is the literal reason Summer strives to be better. Todd sees all of this and knows Summer’s worth - he knew in high school and knows even more now. If only he could get it through her thick, stubborn skull!
This was a really good story! It’s engaging and touches on relatable subjects (please read the warnings) - I love a good HEA! Who doesn’t!? Definitely recommend! Thank you to @happilybookedpr and the author @melissa_whitneyauthor for the early read…all opinions are my own.
I loved finally getting Summer's story, from the first two books we knew she was a mean girl in high school but came back to town years later as a single mom. We learn what happened that led her to leave town and return. Summer is such a strong FMC. She grew so much from her high school days and her early twenties with her controlling ex. Todd was the perfect book boyfriend. He liked Summer in high school and since she moved back and joined their friend group, the feelings grew. He knew Summer needed time to find herself and take their relationship slowly because of Liam. They helped each other heal and grow together.
For those that love mean girls this series is for you omg I loved this book

A touching Christmas romance about a single mom finding herself, and romance again. First read by this author and i really enjoyed it!
Does have some heavier topics, so be sure to read the content warnings!
As a mom, i definitely understand the feeling of loosing yourself to your children and responsibilities so alot of this felt really relatable while still bringing the cozy Christmas vibes!
This is book three in the Home series by Melissa Whitney - a standalone set in an interconnected world. This was my first time reading this author, but I’ll definitely be going back to read the other two to learn more about the side characters and their stories.
What I really loved discovering about this series is that Whitney drew inspiration from classics for each book: Finding Home was inspired by Jane Austen, Coming Home by Little Women, and Making Home by Mean Girls.
It’s described as “a heartfelt, funny Mean Girls-inspired holiday romance with spicy Hallmark vibes that also deals with very real issues,” so do keep that in mind before diving in.
You had me from the dedication - “To the mamas, especially those who fall for gingers.” I knew right then this was going to be my kind of book. Our FMC is a 37 year old single mom to a nine year old, falling for the ginger cinnamon roll MMC - but she doesn’t feel worthy of love, so she avoids her feelings. Sound familiar? As a 37-year-old single mom myself, with a 10 year old and newly in a relationship with my own ginger cinnamon roll after going it completely alone for five years… you can probably see why this hit close to home.
This book was something else. So real. So raw. Summer, our FMC, is a reformed Regina George - the popular girl and bully from high school who’s now come back home after years in NYC, escaping the riches and trauma of an ex who wasn’t who she thought he was, but who left deep scars. Returning to her small home town, she quickly learns that while small towns can be cosy and quaint, they rarely forget. They might forgive, eventually, but they never forget. Living with regret, Summer battles her past daily, unable to see how far she’s come or that she deserves happiness. Then there’s Todd, our MMC. The ultimate cinnamon roll, the perfect book boyfriend who’s been besotted with Summer since high school. He always saw beyond her Regina façade. He’s the man we know she deserves but she doesn’t see or want to see or admit to this. His patience and quiet devotion extend not only to Summer but also to her autistic son, Liam. There’s wonderful disability representation in this book, handled with such tenderness that it feels deeply relatable.
The story flows beautifully, with a plot that keeps you engaged throughout. There are some less than, picture perfect small town moments, but that’s what makes it feel so authentic. Watching the characters grow, both individually and together, you truly see the meaning of it takes a village. Not just to raise a child, but to raise anyone. Summer finally begins to see past her regrets and starts embracing who she is now and who she wants to become. As a single mom, I found myself relating to Summer on so many levels. When your child is your whole world, it’s easy to lose yourself in the chaos of parenting. While my past trauma isn’t as heavy as hers (and I’m grateful for that), it has still shaped how I see myself, my worth, and the fear of letting someone new in - risking being hurt again while still trying to believe in the good around me. And of course, it’s all set at Christmas.
So if you’re looking for a story full of love, laughter, self-discovery, and second chances - all wrapped up in a cosy, wholesome holiday romance — then it’s time to come Home.
Thank you so much to Happily Booked PR for sending me an ecopy to read and review.
This is my first time reading Melissa Whitney’s book and I have absolutely no words at all! The way she is able to write such raw emotions and makes you feel them deep inside your heart, took my breath away! This is the third book in the series titled The Home Series and although you don’t need to read the first two, the books are all interconnected. I will definitely be going back and reading those first two books because I am a sucker for small-town romances 🤭
This is the story of Summer, who is moving back to her small town of Perry, NY after living in the city in her 20s. Although she left her old life behind, she knows that it would be a great town to raise her son, Liam. However, when she left, she wasn’t liked at all by anyone in her high school because she was the Queen Bee and bullied a bunch of people. When she arrives at Perry, no one has forgotten who she used to be and they make sure that she knows it too. She knew that this was going to happen and instead of continuing being the mean girl, she has decided to right her wrongs. She wants to show Liam that she has changed and doesnt want him to pay for her mistakes when she was a teen.
One person who always believed that there was more to Summer than what meets the eye was Todd. He has always had a crush on her throughout their high school years but was too shy to say anything about it. Instead, he will look at her from a distance and see how she would hide her true self to fit in with the school stereotypes. When they start talking, you can see sparks flying between them. But, Summer is also nervous and afraid of jumping back into a relationship after what she has been through. Todd, on the other hand, is the most patient man of all time! He is so sweet, caring and doesn’t push Summer too much. At the same time, he also holds her accountable when needed, but doesnt hold it against her.
I truly enjoyed reading this book so much because we see Summer’s journey of healing and realizing that she genuinely wants to change who she used to be. As well as showing the town that she is not who she used to be. Also, Liam is the cutest boy in the world, and the way Todd interacts with him and makes him also feel loved is soooo freaking sweet!! Apart from that, one of my favorite aspects of the book is that each chapter starts with a quote from the movie Mean Girls and I love how that added another element to the storyline.
Melissa Whitney never fails to bring raw emotion into her romance stories. Making Home is book 3 in her Home series, but can be read as a standalone. Trust me when I say, you should read the other 2 though. Melissa flawlessly writes her own interests into books and makes them work so well. Pulling inspiration from both Mean Girls and Gilmore Girls, this book showcases what happens when the mean girl from high school grows up. I couldn’t put this book down and loved reading about our MCs not letting first impressions stand in their way of true love.
Summer is moving back home after being away for 10 years. When she left, she was not well liked, having a Regina George personality, and is having to eat a lot of humble pie now that she is back. But she is determined to right the past and show her son that she isn’t who she once was. She is going to be better for him and not let son pay for her mistakes. Watching Summer take ownership for her past had my heart going out to her. I could feel her remorse through the pages of this book. Her love for her son is evident and I commend her for owning up to her past wrongs.
Todd remembers Summer from high school, but where many see the mean popular girl, he sees a broken woman who is trying to make a good life for his son. He never really thought Summer’s facade in high school was the real her. He is able to see through her just as easily now as he could then. He is an amazing character. Patient, kind, and has quiet strength around him. And while he reminds Summer of her past when necessary, he never holds it against her. He sees the woman she is trying to be now, not the girl she once was.
These two and Summer’s son, Liam, captivated me throughout this story. Melissa always writes beautifully and includes representation of some sort in each of her books. Having a disability herself, she shows people they don’t define you. Her representation of autism in this book is handled with so much care and tenderness that I hope people feel seen. Melissa always provides wonderful romance but isn’t afraid to put the messy parts of life in her stories either. I always enjoy reading her stories and completely loved this one.
As always, review any author notes before reading.
What to Expect: ❄️Friends to Lovers 🏡Black Cat FMC ❄️Golden Retriever MMC 🏡Holiday Romance ❄️Single Parent Romance
Let me start this review by saying this was a very heartfelt story that was filled with friends, family, making up for one’s past, and learning to love again. It was very sweet in a lot of ways and I imagine it’d be very healing for someone in similar situations. The conversations felt mostly realistic with real concerns people have when embarking on new relationships, especially after horrible events in past ones.
The issue is this book simply isn’t for me. I’m not a mom, I don’t want to be a mom, I don’t hang with the “mama bear” types, and I don’t like Taylor Swift so that made this book kind of not relatable for me. So please know, I think it’s well written, it simply isn’t my style of book and may not be yours if you are like me. However, if that is your vibe you will absolutely love this.
I really related to the issues of never feeling like enough and having parents that always want you to be a little bit more than you are. However, it’s pretty hard to relate to the plight of a reformed mean girl if you yourself were the target of said mean girls. Not that Summer wasn’t a kind character, she was, it’s just I didn’t relate to that at all either.
Summer’s kid Liam was a cute character and I liked how much he loved the dog Sheba, that was also cute. Todd was a nice character but I felt like he came on really strong and there wasn’t enough backstory for that to not feel a little weird to me.
My other issue was the Swiftie references. It takes me right out of the story. I have nothing against being a Swiftie if that makes you happy, but I just wish it wasn’t infiltrating romance books so much. I will never forgive TS for adding dickmatized to the lexicon, it’s the worst word and it keeps appearing everywhere. I also don’t relate to wanting a TS wedding or having her songs come up whenever I do something.
Despite my complaints, on the whole it’s written pretty well, it has cute small town vibes with a good redemption story, and I think the right audience would really enjoy it.
Making Home hooked me from the first chapter. I love a good small-town romance, and this one delivers all the warmth, charm, and interconnected relationships I look for — but with so much emotional depth layered in.
Summer’s arc is powerful. Once the “Regina George” of her town, every chapter opening with a Mean Girls quote reminded me exactly who she used to be… and how far she’s come. Watching the former queen bee grapple with the fallout of past mistakes — while also recovering from years of emotional, physical, and mental abuse — was heartbreaking and beautifully handled. Her return to Perry, NY, with her son felt raw, real, and incredibly vulnerable.
And the community? Stunning. One of my favorite parts was how the story wove in characters who were once affected by Summer’s past. Amy — someone Summer bullied in high school — becomes part of her healing in such an unexpected and meaningful way. Amy’s son, JJ, is deaf, and the way the town supports him was wonderful to read. Liam learning sign language so he could talk to his friend absolutely melted my heart, and the moment when Liam protects JJ from bullies gave me chills.
Then seeing Amy stand up for Summer against one of Summer’s old friends? Full-circle perfection. That scene alone made this book unforgettable.
And Todd… the steady, kind, quietly devoted brewery owner who has cared for Summer far longer than she ever realized. Their friends-to-lovers journey felt safe, patient, and sincere — exactly the kind of love story she deserved after everything she endured.
If you love: ❄️ Small towns that feel like real communities 🏡 Friends-to-lovers ❄️ Single mom representation 🏡 Trauma recovery handled with care ❄️ Deaf and autism representation 🏡 Found family vibes ❄️ Heroes who love like a warm hug
Thank you Happily Booked PR and Melissa Whitney for the ARC of the wonderful Making Home.
This was my first Christmas read of 2025 and whilst Christmas is not the total focus it has all the cosy vibes of the Hallmark movies I devour this time of year with spice on top.
We follow the protagonist, a single mum named Summer who lives with her son at her parents house following fleeing her abusive ex 10 years prior. The story follows how her love story unfolds and the trials and tribulations both of her situation but also of being in a small town where she was known as the Regina George of her high school. I loved how the autism rep via Summer's son Liam. It strikes the right tone of being included and important to the story but doesn't overuse it or make it central to Liam's personality as it should be. He's an amazing kid who just happens to be neurodivergent but he copes well with it because of his outstanding understanding support structure and I truly loved how this was done. Also hats off to the description of the reality of a post child body and how this was presented.
This has so many emotional beats. I cried so many times both happy and sad and was totally immersed in the journey. It was well paced, did the right amount of flashback/background to enhance and explain the story.
I would have liked more of a thing with the quintessential 'things go wrong' part as this seemed a bit rushed but otherwise absolutely adored the story and want to read more from this talented author.
This is a must for anyone wanting hallmark vibes with the door (and sometimes car) left wide open!
The third and final book in the Home series; I’m not crying, you’re crying! No but seriously, I am crying
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, books by Melissa Whitney are like therapy. I love unpacking insecurities and trauma with her characters. She really teaches me on how people should be acting, communicating, and getting through the tough stuff. I use her lessons in real life, I’m not even kidding! As much as you want to lash out, sometimes I think ok let’s be the bigger person here. We can love like Nat, forgive like Elle, understand like Todd. And sometimes we just need to ask for a good day.
Summer and Todd are amazing. Summer is so strong, she’s battled hard and put in the work to reform her former mean girl ways. But she still has doubts, insecurities, and hides herself. She doesn’t think she deserves Todd
But Todd sees her for who she is. He’s been pining for years!! It’s so sweet how he cares for her, supports her, just loves her. And she does it right back, it’s not a one way street ladies!! Todd had his own struggles but such a big heart! The way he was with Liam, basically adopting the kid before Summer even agreed to date him
Liam! Oh god Liam! I love that kid. I love how sweet and kind he is, how he sticks up for his friends, and he’s so polite!
All in all, just a heart warming story, even if a little sappy. I liked the tension with Amy, it was a good lesson in forgiveness. And Vanessa! Sometimes the worst people are your own family; I’m glad she stuck up for Summer then and now. Just ALL THE FEELS
This is book three of an interconnected stand-alone series, I was chosen to be an ARC reader for. I have not read the first two YET, but will definitely be soon because this one blew me away. The three books are based around the “big city” woman, the village doctor, and the single mom (as told by the author). As the author also mentions “While this is a heartfelt/funny Mean Girls-inspired holiday romance with spicy Hallmark vibes, it does deal with very real issues…” so please be aware of trigger warnings.
Summer is our single mom to nine year old Liam, who is the light of her life, who is completely puppy obsessed. She has a mean girl reputation from when she was in high school, and all these years later, coming home, she is trying to show people she has changed.
Todd (also known as French fries and wedge salad to our waitress/event planner Summer and her colleagues) is the total definition of a cinnamon roll. He falls first and hard and it has to be one of the sweetest things ever.
I love that the author bases this off her actual hometown, it brings so much more heart to the story. If I could go back I would read the series in order (which I will when I read the next two) that way I have the rest of the backstories. I had a great time reading this one and can’t wait to read the rest of the series!
This book was a great book to read even though it is a standalone book. There are two other books that are interconnected that come before making it home. I recommend you read all three books, but this one can be read solo. In Making it Home, we have Summer (used to be mean girl) wants to live her life except her boss (wanna be matchmaker) wants to hook her up with every man in town, except everyone remembers her as the mean girl, former prom queen she was back in high school. We have Todd who had a huge crush on summer back in high school but now seems to be falling for her again however summer is being a bit stubborn because of of course she has her son to think of and summer is not sure if she’s ready for a serious relationship. This comes after her previous relationship with her abusive ex. It’s easier for summer to just hide away and not have to face her fears or not to mention some secret that can ruin her whole life a life that she is trying to make for herself and for her son. This whole book was all beautifully written the author really captures the reader providing aspects of true love forgiveness and how one could always begin a new life and put the past behind. 10 out of 10 would recommend this book to everyone!!
loved the first two books in this series, and while you don't have to read them to read this one...you definitely should! We get Summer and Todd's story here....and I love it! We get so much of Elle, Clayton, Nat and Noah from the previous books in here too, which makes me happy. I loved all four of them so much.
Summer was the mean girl in high school, think Regina George level. And she went off to the big city after graduation and fell in with a bad guy who she ran away from when she learned she was pregnant. She came back home to live with her parents, but people in town have not forgotten who she once was. Todd went to high school with her, but doesn't hold her past against her. Though, she keeps some secrets from him that eventually come to blows in the book, because don't they always? But it was such a fun ride seeing as how their friendship blooms into something. This gives small town major hallmark movie vibes, but with some banter and spice and all things nice.
One thing I would like to point out about the author is how well she handles all situations in her books. Mental health, physical abuse, autism...it is all done so well.
Bottom Line: Read it!
**I received a copy from Happily Booked and am leaving this review voluntarily. All opinions are my own.**
The one time band geek and the prom queen girl that once was mean . This book is everything and more to show us what your heart is for . That mean girl vibe has her broken ,there’s people she’s not spoken to in years but one man lays her fears to rest . He doesn’t treat her like the rest. To him she’s still a beauty queen but good inside to match and truth be known he’d wish they were attached ,he’s her friend. Her boss where she works is trying to matchmake her. Summer Michaels just wants to read a book stay at home and raise her young son.Todd Kruger is her friend ,one on whom she can depend so he’s,he’s harbored his crush for her through school when he was a nerd and her cool ,but that infatuation doesn’t exist anymore . His eyes turn to mist because now he knows for certain,he’s in love with her . He’s falling for her and she’s not going to let herself have him . What a pair they are . Perhaps if they only wished on a Christmas star ,they’d know where they are. ..That one time ( no I’m not going to say band camp) things change is at the wintery themed dance ,the two having tiptoed around one another ,this dance is like no other. It sets a precedent but she’s unsure . She has her son to think of and what about the damage her reputation may do , what threat she might be to his business has her in misery . Can he make her see? They’re in it together whatever they may weather. Wonderfully done,I love this Melissa Whitney hon. Well written and beautifully penned characters who endear themselves to me. I adore this ,it’s absolute bliss
This is Book 3 of Melissa's The Home series and this is the story of Summer and Todd.
Melissa is an auto-read for me and I sure as heck wasn't disappointed with her new book!
Summer ends up back home after fleeing a bad relationship and has spent years repairing the 'mean girl' high school reputation.
She is now an amazing event planner with a gorgeous son!
Todd knew Summer from school and this lovely guy (who is now a successful businessman) has always had a crush on Summer....
I adore Summer! Before we even meet her, she has acknowledged her past and has made it her mission to change - boy has she ever! She is such a loving and kind person!
I also love how Summer's son has autism as I do feel that this isn't shown much in books. As a Mum who has an autistic daughter, I loved seeing the representation and cousl highly relate to Summer.
Todd is just a lovely character. He is kind and patient... just the kind of guy Summer needs in her life.
The story itself is so lovely, warm and endearing and even when Melissa introduces a thorn from Summer's past, Melissa grips you and pulls you into the story making you a cheerleader for Summer.
A fabulous book with a beautiful cover, I highly recommend to all!

First off, thank you, Melissa, for letting me be part of your ARC team and read Making Home ahead of release!
This was my first time reading Melissa’s work, and I loved how she wrote the MMCs and wove Mean Girls energy into a heartfelt small-town romance! I’ll definitely be picking up books 1 & 2 next.
Summer Michaels is doing her best to keep her head down—raising her son, working at the café, and trying to move on from her past as the town’s former mean girl. But her boss has other plans…
Enter Todd Kruger, the local brewery owner and Summer’s old high school crush, who sees the woman she’s become, not the girl she was. After a year of dancing around their feelings, one winter wedding dance changes everything.
I loved Todd’s gentle bond with Summer’s autistic son, Liam, and the way Summer faces her past with courage and grace.
If you love Mean Girls-meets-Gilmore Girls-small-town, friends-to-lovers, holiday romance with a dash of spice 🌶️—this one’s for you!.
Tropes: ❄️ Black Cat x Golden Retriver 📘 Friends to Lovers ❄️ Mean Girls Inspired Holiday Romance 📘 Spicy Hallmark Vibes ❄️ Single Mom 📘 Trauma Rep ❄️ Gilmore Girl Vibes
Melissa Whitney has done it again! This is a sweet, heartfelt romance all the way. The book is the third in the Home Series, but can be read as a standalone. Our FMC Summer just wants to raise her son and live her life. She works in the local cafe to support herself and her nine-year-old son. Her boss, Todd, keeps trying to set her up, but the locals know her as the mean girl from high school. Todd himself had a crush on her in high school, but now they are friends and coworkers. One special night, both Summer and Todd feel a connection, but Summer thinks the relationship could be complicated. She isn’t sure whether to take this risk or keep playing it safe.
Although the book is sweet, funny, and heartfelt, it also addresses some serious issues. Please check the trigger warnings before reading. The author does have a tender way of writing about these things, though. The characters are well-written, and the narrative is engaging. You will root for the characters as you read. This author never disappoints! Thank you to Happily Booked PR for the gifted ecopy. All opinions are my own.
I have never read anything by Melissa Whitney before, OMG this was fantastic!! This is book three in The Home Series. Summer Michaels returns home pregnant after living in New York City for ten years, and dating Max. Max didn't want me, he wanted to posses me and control me! She is still living with her parents, along with her nine year old son Liam; who is on the autism spectrum. Summer works at Cassie's Cafe as a waitress part time, also a great event planner. When Summer was in high school she was the "Mean Girl" as in the movie. Todd Kruger was the high school band geek. Todd now owns the popular brewery "Farmer's Ale", and the wine bar "Wine Down". Todd comes to the cafe everyday, ordering the same thing, He is great with kids, and so patient with Liam. Todd liked Summer in high school, and when she moved back they were friends again; but can they be more than friends? Love the plot, great setting, and strong intense interesting characters. I look forward to reading more from Ms. Melissa Whitney!!! I loved her references to the Buffalo Bills, Western New York, and the town of Hamburg. I live in that area
Summer was the mean girl in high school and after a bad experience comes back to her small town. But no matter what she does, her reputation seems to follow her everywhere she goes. However, Todd, who did go to high school with Summer hasn't let her past personality change how he feels about her. He sees her everyday and wants to be apart of her life as much as he can. Now Todd is an absolute sweetheart. I loved everything about him. He stands up for Summer when there are those trying to tear her down. He does everything he can to be the best friend she could have and lets her know he wants more, and is willing to wait to do it on her timeline. He was a respectful and loveable person.
I was glad when Summer stood up for herself with her family. They seemed to always want her to be more and do more, but they never asked her what she wanted to do. She just seemed like a disappointment and when she finally stands up for herself, I clapped along and praised her for her courage.
Making Home by Melissa Whitney is such a feel good read! Summer and Todd are honestly the kind of couple you can’t help rooting for, and little Liam adds so much heart to the story. Summer, aka the high school mean girl, is now a single mom and moves back determined to make right the past and raise her son. While Todd remembers Summer from high school, he doesn’t think of her that way. He is patient, swoony, thoughtful, and completely earns every bit of Summer’s trust.
The romance is so enjoyable, full of sparks, flirty banter, and genuinely sweet moments that never feel forced. I loved how the story balances humor with heart, and how Liam and the supporting characters make the story feel like a little community you wish you could be part of.
This book gave me all the cozy, warm feelings. It’s funny, charming, and has just the right amount of emotional depth to make you care about everyone involved. Making Home is cozy, sweet, and downright heartwarming. A perfect book for this time of year.
This story completely captured my heart. Making Home is a small-town, friends-to-lovers, holiday romance that’s sweet, emotional, and full of healing.
Summer is a reformed mean girl trying to make peace with her past while raising her son and starting over. Todd is the patient, kind-hearted brewery owner who has always seen her for who she truly is. Their friendship-to-love journey felt so genuine and real. Melissa Whitney writes with so much tenderness and care, especially when it comes to disability and autism representation. The way she balances the messy, imperfect parts of life with warmth and heart is what makes her books so special.
Heartfelt, hopeful, and quietly powerful, this story is perfect for anyone who loves a small-town redemption arc, single parent romance, and a cinnamon roll hero who will melt your heart. 3.5⭐ I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily
💗🎄❄️ MAKING HOME..the first book I've read from Melissa Whitney! I believe this is a part of series but you can read it as a standalone! We meet Summer who comes home from NYC with baggage after her relationship with Max doesnt go so well! I love a christmas read amd absolutely loved making my way through this one!
💗 Summer finds herself finding romance again but not as the Regina she was in high school! I love the Mean Girls reference too, Melissa this was amazing! Summer's FMC character has come on so much, she has a son Liam so all her responsibility is for him until she meets Todd! Avoids her feelings at first until we learn that Todd has had hia eyes on Summer since high school! A little of real and raw issues we all face and totally relatable! An enjoyable read and now I've found another author to add to my endless tbr! Thank you so much Happily Booked Pr and Melissa Whitney for the ARC!
Making Home was a good read, especially for those may have been in the shoes of Summer; wanting to correct and change for the better.
This installment was a little hard for me to fully get into and it could be because I didn’t have a huge backstory about Todd. I know from the other books, he had feelings for Summer, but there were times where his attraction to her seemed forced.
I fell in love with Summer’s redemption. She no longer wanted to have the label bully attached to her. In her adult life, and due to that past behavior, she felt like she wasn’t lovable. While she did have a few close knit friends, she felt that she had to the extra mile to prove how much she’s changed.
Melissa did a wonderful job giving Liam a voice and truly doing research on autism. Liam was so loving and inquisitive and his friendship with Amy’s son was so sweet.
I chuckled reading the Mean Girl quotes throughout each chapter.
Although it took awhile to read, I enjoyed Making Home.
After leaving an abusive relationship, Summer moves back in with her parents with her nine-year-old son. Reconnecting with her old school friends brings comfort—and something more. She realises she’s had feelings for one of them, Todd, for years, but fear from her past keeps her holding back. He’s patient, willing to wait as long as it takes… but can Summer find the courage to take a chance on love again?
I’ll admit, this book started off a little slow for me, but once I hit the 40% mark, I was completely invested. Having been in a coercive relationship myself, I really understood where Summer was coming from. And Todd? He gave me all the feels—truly the most patient, laid-back, Labrador-energy hero you could ever hope for.

I really enjoyed this book it was heartfelt, emotional, and surprisingly funny in places. Summer used to be the “mean girl” in high school, but life has humbled her. After a rough relationship and years away in New York, she returns to her small hometown with her son, hoping to start fresh. But small towns don’t forget easily, and Summer has a lot to prove not just to others, but to herself.
Todd was such a sweet surprise. He’s the kind of guy who’s patient, kind, and quietly strong. He had a crush on Summer back in high school, and now that she’s back, he sees the woman she’s become not just the girl she used to be. I loved how he treated her with respect and gave her space to heal.
Summer’s journey wasn’t just about love it was about forgiveness, growth, and learning to stand up for herself. I especially liked the scenes where she finally pushed back against the pressure from her family.
The writing made it easy to connect with the characters and the town.
Coming Home is the kind of story that warms you from the inside out. Even though it’s the third in a series, it stands strong on its own and pulls you straight into the charm of small-town life. The writing is soft, emotional, and sprinkled with humor — the kind that makes you smile between the tears.
Summer, a single mom determined to rebuild her life, meets Todd, a genuinely kind man who wears his heart on his sleeve. Their slow-burn connection feels tender and real, filled with vulnerability, laughter, and comfort. I adored how Summer’s son added brightness to every page and made the story even more heartwarming.
The author has beautifully captured love, forgiveness, and fresh starts. It’s a perfect cozy read for a rainy evening.

This was really really sweet. I don’t normally do ex-bully romances, but I had really liked what we saw of Summer in the last books so I thought I would give it a try. I think what made this works so well is that Summer has gone through so much and is a completely different person from her high school self (which was more mean girl than bully in reality). She’s mature and focused on being the best version of herself, as a person and as a mom, and she puts protecting her son at the center of everything. From the very beginning I found myself rooting for her and wanting her to find her HEA, because she’s a truly good person, regardless of who she was in the past. Todd was perfect for her, providing her the love and safety she deserved, and allowing her to finally be fully and truly herself, and happy.
*I received an ARC of this book, this is my honest opinion*
Omgosh, this book was fantastic. Not only dies it show that people can grow and change, but it also shows hope some o people just can’t move on from the past. They don’t believe people can change. Such is the case for Summer. She was the mean girl in high school, moved away to “bigger and better” things.” Just to end up going back to the small town she left, but with her son. Leaving a bad relationship from her ex. She tries to start over again. The people of the town just can’t seem to get past her being a mean girl back in the day. But Todd can. Because he’s always had a crush on her. This story was so cute and sweet. Showing the struggles and the inability for some to just see that a person can in fact change for the better. There was a good dose of drama, and definitely some romance. I really enjoyed reading this. Thank you for allowing me to arc read for you.
