A thoughtful, encouraging reason to believe that God is good, even when life is not.
Many of us want to trust God, but we just can’t. We have trust issues. We see heartbreak in the world, or experience it personally, and don’t understand how a good God could have allowed it.
We have questions. How could a good God allow so much pain? Why would God allow this to happen? If God could have stopped it, why didn’t he stop it? Why is God doing this to me? Do I even want to trust in a God who would allow this? Ryan Maher—pastor and co-leader of digital ministries that reach hundreds of millions each month, including Trust God Bro, Her True Worth, and The Prayer Channel—knows the kind of gut-wrenching, life-changing pain that can make a person question everything.
Ryan draws from his own story and those of others to wrestle with the hard questions about God’s goodness, human suffering, and what trust really looks like. This is not a book of easy answers, but an honest path back to the God who invites our questions and walks with us through the pain
With biblical clarity and deep empathy, this book offers hope for the doubter, healing for the wounded, and a vision of a God who meets us in our pain, redeems what’s been broken, and proves Himself faithful—again and again.
“This isn’t just theology. It’s hope. Because if suffering isn’t part of God’s nature or plan, it means it won’t get the final word. It means that what you’re going through isn’t meaningless or forgotten. It means a better day is coming.”
I needed to read this. This book gives a loving look at who God is through suffering. In the aftermath of a season of change and suffering, I felt like God was unrecognizable to me. Why would he allow sickness? Why would he allow brokenness? While I have walked through many hard times and seasons of suffering, when it touches your children it feels so hopeless. I felt like God was there, but I was also angry he would ‘allow’ this to happen. I NEEDED to read the sections about freedom in the world and that God didn’t allow it to happen, he is working through what happened. It helped reframe my mind back to who God is.
Would recommend to anyone who is suffering and questioning why or anyone who walked away from the the church because of hurt.
I absolutely loved this book. I won it in a Goodreads giveaway and went in knowing nothing about Ryan Maher or his work, but now I’m a huge fan. This is one of those books that everyone will need at some point in their life, and it’s even better if you read it early to lay a solid foundation for who God is and why He is worthy of our trust.
What impressed me most is how intentionally the book is structured. Maher builds each chapter on the last with care, guiding you through big theological ideas without ever letting them become overwhelming. He communicates deep truths with clarity, warmth, and accessibility, making this a book any layperson can pick up and genuinely understand.
If you’re struggling to trust God, you should run to read this. But even if you’re not in a season of doubt, this book strengthens your foundation in God’s character and equips you to help others trust Him more deeply. We live in a broken world full of broken people, yet Maher reminds us that God is not the source of our storms, He is the shelter within them. And He invites us to partner with Him in that work.
A beautiful, grounding, faith‑strengthening read. I’m grateful I stumbled into it, and I’ll be recommending it widely.
This book is easy to read, which is helpful because it deals with the heavy problem of good versus evil and how God fits into that - particularly if you are going through a crisis. I found the book to be helpful and clearly written. However, I do not agree with the author’s interpretation of what happened in the book of Job. I feel that it was a stretch to believe what the author suggests. That is why I give this book 4 stars instead of 5.
