She’s the first woman in the NHL. He’s the captain who can’t stay away. With the world watching and secrets mounting, one wrong move could shatter everything—on and off the ice.
Breaking the Ice Ceiling absolutely earns its title. This dual POV romance is PACKED with heat, from the get go! Gracie Monroe delivers a smart, emotionally charged hockey romance that goes far beyond locker-room clichés and brooding captains.
The premise alone hooks you immediately: the first woman in the NHL, under a microscope from every angle, and a team captain whose composure evaporates the moment she’s near. What makes this book work is that Monroe treats that setup with respect. The pressure, the scrutiny, the impossible standards placed on a woman breaking into a closed-off world all feel real and sharply observed.
The chemistry is undeniable, but it never drowns out the stakes. Every interaction feels risky, every decision costly. The romance builds with tension instead of shortcuts, and when emotions finally crack, it feels earned rather than convenient. The male lead could have been the usual alpha cutout, yet he’s written with restraint and vulnerability that makes him far more compelling.
This is a fast, clean read that still manages depth, balancing ambition, secrecy, and attraction without losing momentum. If you like sports romance with substance, strong female leads, and a relationship tested by more than just feelings, this one belongs on your Kindle.
Highly recommended for readers who want heat, heart, and something a little sharper than the average puck-and-love story.
Victoria stepping into the NHL as the first woman creates constant pressure, and the story shows just how tough that would be. The attention, expectations, and locker room tension all feel very real. At the same time, the connection with the team captain adds a strong romantic thread that’s both intense and complicated. I liked how the relationship grows while the challenges around them keep building. The mix of hockey, emotion, and romance felt very balanced overall.
I haven't sat up all night to finish a book in a day in a very long time. This hockey romance is like no other. At first I worried about the storyline idea but this is a nonstop thrill ride with some many twists and turns that keep you wanting more. These two main characters are the perfect mix of strength, heat, and heartfelt sweetness. All the emotions will get you with this one. And Damians scene outside the door is purely heart wrenching, but beautifully written.
Victoria is a very awesome character! As the first woman in NHL she faced alot or struggles! She always held her ground! And Victoria and Damien! I love how much he cares for her and how he always had her back!
Breaking the Ice Ceiling” is such an engaging and empowering read! The storyline pulls you in from the very first page following the first woman in the NHL as she battles expectations, pressure, and her own heart. The chemistry between her and the team captain is electric yet beautifully layered with emotion, ambition, and vulnerability.
I love how the author blends romance with determination, highlighting both the challenges and triumphs of breaking barriers in a male-dominated sport. It’s inspiring, heartfelt, and absolutely addictive. A perfect read for anyone who enjoys strong characters, slow-burn tension, and a romance worth cheering for.
Absolutely phenomenal! Breaking the Ice Ceiling is powerful, emotional, and impossible to forget. Victoria’s strength and determination as the first woman in the NHL gave me chills, and the slow-burn romance with Damian was perfection. It’s inspiring, steamy, and heartfelt all at once—an incredible read I couldn’t put down!
A total knockout. Victoria James is the kind of heroine you cheer for from page one. Her strength, courage, and determination to succeed in a male-dominated sport are inspiring, and the romance with Damian is sizzling. This story made me laugh, made me mad, and made me fall completely in love.
One of the most beautiful novels. While I don't usually like romance when it's mixed with other genres, this one seems beautiful to me. Breaking the Ice Ceiling is a contemporary sports romance that capitalizes on an extraordinary event: the first woman to play in the NHL. The premise itself gives the novel a powerful edge, but its true brilliance lies in how it handles the psychological and media pressures, and the intersection of professional ambition with emotion in an environment that doesn't forgive mistakes. The protagonist is not just a "historic achievement," but a character facing complex challenges: skeptical glances, the weight of expectations, and the constant fear that any mistake, no matter how small, could completely shatter her dream. Her presence on the ice is not just a test of her skill, but also her resilience against a system accustomed to being closed. Meanwhile, the team captain emerges as a pivotal character, torn between discipline and responsibility on one hand, and an irresistible attraction on the other. Their relationship isn't presented as a simple or quick romance, but rather as a rising tension under watchful eyes, accumulating secrets, and a fine line separating professionalism from collapse. The author successfully balances the atmosphere of professional sports and romance, without one overshadowing the other. The ice scenes are intense and competitive, while the emotional aspect develops gradually, with a constant awareness of the consequences of any wrong decision, both on and off the court. I give it 5 stars.
Couldn’t put this down — intense, emotional, and seriously addictive
Breaking the Ice Ceiling completely pulled me in from the first chapter. The concept alone — the first woman in the NHL — is compelling, but what really makes this story stand out is how real the pressure, scrutiny, and tension feel.
Victoria James is exactly the kind of heroine I love: strong without being untouchable, determined without losing her humanity. You feel everything she’s fighting for, and it makes every moment on and off the ice hit harder.
And Damian Maddox? The perfect balance of protective and conflicted. His struggle to keep his distance while clearly falling for Victoria adds so much tension — the slow burn between them is chef’s kiss.
The chemistry is intense, the stakes feel real, and the mix of team dynamics, media pressure, and forbidden romance keeps the pages turning. It’s not just a love story — it’s about proving yourself in a space that wasn’t built for you and refusing to back down.
If you love: ✔ Strong, determined heroines ✔ Protective, emotionally layered heroes ✔ Slow burn with real payoff ✔ Sports romance with actual stakes
…this book is absolutely worth the read.
I’m already thinking about a reread — and I need more from this world.
Breaking the Ice Ceiling is a fast, addictive read that delivers both heart and heat while tackling what it means to be first in a space that was never built for you.
Gracie Monroe does a great job balancing the pressure of the spotlight with the vulnerability that comes from wanting love while carrying the weight of history. The female lead feels strong without being unreal, determined but still human. Her fight to belong in the NHL feels earned, not symbolic.
The romance adds real tension instead of distraction. The chemistry between her and the team captain is intense, complicated, and layered with stakes that go far beyond attraction. Every choice matters, and you feel the risk in both their personal and professional lives.
This book is emotional, empowering, and easy to root for. If you enjoy sports romance with depth, strong characters, and genuine stakes, this one is absolutely worth your time.
Breaking the Ice Ceiling by Gracie Monroe is an exciting and heartfelt hockey romance that blends ambition, tension, and sizzling chemistry.
Victoria James is a powerhouse driven, fearless, and determined to prove she belongs as the first woman in the NHL. Damian Maddox, the team captain, is protective, stubborn, and instantly compelling. The slow-burn tension between them makes every interaction crackle with energy, and you can feel the stakes in every moment.
What makes this story stand out is the balance between romance and the challenges of professional sports. The media scrutiny, team dynamics, and the pressure of being the first woman in a male-dominated league add real emotional weight to their story. The romance feels earned, passionate, and layered, with plenty of moments that make your heart race.
If you enjoy sports romance with strong characters, workplace tension, and slow-burn chemistry that sizzles, this book is a must-read.
When Victoria James sets out to be the first woman in the NHL, she has a lot to overcome, both privately and publicly. Then her concept of family and the relationships with the captain of her team get complicated quickly. It’s a fast-paced read that will keep you wondering what’s going to happen next and how V will keep being the superstar on ice and off ice.
As a strictly clean romance reader and not realizing the content from when I first picked up the book, this one had me skipping a lot of pages, but the story line is sound and the character development is good. My only complaint besides the exhausting amount of X-rated material is that the overall feel was more like high school into college sports rather than pro, but it’s still a good story and good to see how V grows into her role along the way.
This is the third book I’ve read by this author, and once again, she didn’t disappoint. Breaking the Ice Ceiling pulled me in and held my attention throughout. I really enjoy how Gracie Monroe writes strong, driven female leads without making them feel unrealistic, and Victoria is no exception. The premise of being the first woman in the NHL is handled with depth and care. You can feel the pressure, the scrutiny, and the constant need to prove herself, both on and off the ice. The romance adds another layer rather than taking over the story, and the chemistry between Victoria and Damien feels earned. The pacing is fast but not rushed, and the emotional moments hit where they should.
If you’ve enjoyed Monroe’s previous books, this one absolutely lives up to expectations—and if you’re new to her work, it’s a great place to start.
In Breaking the Ice Ceiling, Gracie Monroe crafts a compelling story centered on a woman who achieves something nearly unprecedented: she becomes the first woman to play in the NHL. Her journey is far from easy, she’s not just breaking into a male-dominated sport, but also navigating the spotlight, inner doubts, and the pressure of living proof that progress matters.
Opposite her is the team captain, a man who can’t seem to stay away from her, despite the stakes and the scrutiny. Their chemistry crackles with tension: slow-burn, emotionally intelligent, and fraught with danger. Every “wrong move” feels like it could bring everything crashing down, not just for their relationship, but for her entire hard-fought legacy.
This book delivers the kind of drama I actually want. The conflict feels real, not manufactured, and the story isn’t just a string of cute moments leading to a predictable ending.
The romance hits those early, young-love vibes at times—raw, intense, and messy in a way that feels honest, because they’re still figuring out how to deal with everything they’re feeling.
What really makes it stand out is that it doesn’t dodge the harder truths that can come with a woman stepping into a male-dominated world. The pressure, the scrutiny, the double standards—none of it is hand-waved away. It adds real weight to the story and raises the stakes beyond “will they/won’t they.”
If you want a romance with genuine conflict, high emotion, and a plot that actually moves, this is a 5-star read.
If you like lots of spice, you will like this book!
I've read some of Gracie Monroe's other books. Her writing style is very enjoyable. Things are fast paced, so there's no long, drawn out unnecessarily complicated parts. Losing yourself in the story is easy.
Unlike some other stories, you are told early on who is going to be with who. Instead of waiting for the stars to line up before they get together, they start together. We get to experience their journey and how they grow together, which was refreshing!
The only critique I have is while I liked V a LOT, she did start to really feel like Wonder Woman which was a little off putting at points. She's a little too good at everything.
All that said, I really enjoyed it, and I look forward to the next book.
Breaking the Ice Ceiling is a heartfelt and beautifully written story that pulled me in from the first chapter. Gracie Monroe creates characters who feel real, layered, and easy to connect with. The slow, steady build of tension and emotion makes the romance incredibly satisfying, and the writing is smooth, expressive, and full of warmth.
The themes of growth, vulnerability, and breaking personal barriers are woven in with care, giving the story real depth without weighing it down. By the end, I felt completely invested in the characters and their journey.
A wonderfully crafted romance and an impressive debut. Absolutely a five-star read.
Breaking the Ice Ceiling is an engaging and thoughtfully written book that explores ambition, resilience, and the challenges of pushing past limitations. Gracie Monroe approaches the topic with clarity and purpose, offering insight that feels both relevant and encouraging. The themes of growth and perseverance come through clearly, making the book motivating without feeling heavy-handed.
The writing flows smoothly, and the message is delivered in a way that feels accessible and relatable. It’s a solid, empowering read for anyone interested in personal development and breaking through barriers with intention and confidence.
Easy, Spicy, and Surprisingly Fun I don't normally gravitate toward sports or contemporary romance since fantasy romance is much more my lane, but this one was an easy and enjoyable read. The story moves quickly, the romance is engaging, and the spice level hit a sweet spot for me without feeling overwhelming or gratuitous. I liked the dynamic between the leads, the relationship and the career side of the story. While this is not a genre I usually reach for, I can absolutely see why readers who love sports and contemporary romance would enjoy this book, and for them, this will likely be a very satisfying read.
A bold, high-heat sports romance that thrives on tension, both professional and personal. Gracie Monroe blends the pressure of breaking barriers in the NHL with a charged, slow-burn connection that feels electric under the spotlight. The dynamic between the trailblazing rookie and the team captain is layered with ambition, vulnerability, and undeniable chemistry, making every interaction crackle. It’s unapologetically steamy, emotionally driven, and grounded in the realities of power, perception, and risk. For readers who love their romance fearless, contemporary, and intense, this one scores.
A gripping and steamy dual POV sports romance. The novel explores Victoria’s (the NHL's first female player) challenges in a male-dominated sport and the steamy romance with her team captain Damien. It highlights her resilience and emotional depth, while Damien’s vulnerability adds complexity to their slow-burning romance. Balancing intense hockey action with emotional and psychological struggles, the story touches on ambition, secrecy, and breaking barriers. It offers a heartfelt, empowering read with steamy chemistry and realistic conflict. Fans of sports romance and contemporary love stories will find it engaging and inspiring.
I picked up Breaking the Ice Ceiling expecting a light sports romance, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much depth it had. What I liked most was the strong female lead and the pressure she faces as the first woman in the NHL. The emotional side felt real, especially the constant tension between love and career. I also enjoyed the slow-burn romance and the chemistry between the main characters. What I liked less was that some moments felt a bit predictable, but they didn’t take away from the overall enjoyment. Still, it was an engaging and emotional read overall.
This book SLAYED. The story of the first woman in the NHL is gripping from page one, and the romantic tension between her and the captain? Absolutely electric. The author perfectly balances the adrenaline of high-stakes hockey with emotional depth and vulnerability. It’s empowering, romantic, and impossible to put down. I’ve never rooted for a character this hard. A thrilling blend of heart and grit, I loved every second!
I’m obsessed. The chemistry between the leads is magnetic, and the push-and-pull between ambition and desire makes this story unforgettable. The emotional tension is real, the dialogue sharp, and the stakes? Sky-high. Their romance feels dangerous and beautiful all at once and the behind the scenes glimpse into professional sports adds incredible realism. Fans of Elle Kennedy and Mariana Zapata will devour this book.
What a groundbreaking romance. The author doesn’t just tell a love story she writes a love story within history. Seeing a woman dominate in the NHL while navigating pressure, expectations, media, and personal fears made for an incredibly emotional read. Her journey is inspiring, raw, and real. The captain’s devotion? Jaw dropping. I cheered for them like I was in the stands. More sports romances NEED to be this good.
This felt like watching a championship game and falling in love at the same time. I adored the pacing fast when it needed to be, soft when it counted. There’s heat, humor, vulnerability, and resilience. The author knows how to build tension both on and off the ice, and I didn’t want it to end. If you like stories about ambition, secret feelings, and love that risks everything this is your next five-star read.
This is a fast paced, addictive sports romance that’s a great read for the holidays. It blends heart, heat, and high stakes with the uber Canadian game of hockey! 🇨🇦
This story is about Gracie Monroe being the first woman in the NHL. Her fight to belong is long and hard. She’s strong yet vulnerable. The romance with the team captain is predictably somewhat tense, but I thought it was also well written.
If you enjoy the sports romance genre, this one is an easy recommendation.
This isn’t just a romance it’s a triumph. The heroine is fierce and flawed in the best way, and the captain’s struggle to stay distant makes for a captivating story of restraint and deep emotion. The romance is slow burn perfection with moments that had me literally holding my breath. I was moved, I was invested, and I’m already hoping for a sequel. The world needs more love stories like this.
