They took his brother first. Now, the cycle has begun again. The Wicker Man meets Gannibal in this terrifying mystery-thriller where a teacher must protect his students from an island that devours its young.
When Veran returns to Daemonsford, the remote island of his childhood, he wants revenge. His teen brother’s death five years ago was no accident. And Veran will burn down the whole island to find the truth.
Taking a job as the island’s new teacher, Veran quickly notices something is wrong with the Year Ten students. They sit apart. No one speaks to them. And when he calls the register, they don’t answer with words. They hiss. They caw. They growl.
The deeper Veran digs, the more he understands the fear his brother must have felt—the same fear his students now carry. As time runs out, he races to unearth Daemonsford’s darkest secrets.
But the islanders are also afraid. They whisper about the Devil watching him. The wrath he’s provoking. And how he should leave—
Dharshaini Ganapathy is a British writer of mystery-thrillers with horror elements. As the oldest of four, sibling bonds often lie at the heart of her stories. She works as a doctor by day, and enjoys writing through the night.
Stories have shaped Dharshaini’s life since childhood, and she has an enduring interest in ghost tales, the uncanny, and the shadows that cling to human nature. That said, no matter how dark her story becomes, she promises never to let the dog die.
I absolutely loved this thriller/mystery novel steeped in folk-horror! If you are a fan of Japanese or Korean style horror films, highly recommend this one. The overt unease and horrifying descriptions of what could haunt in the night were fantastic, and I actually had to avoid reading before bed as I would lose track of time and my heart rate would be too high.
Originally I picked this up as the author (I believe) hopped onto Reddit to discuss the cover, confirming with screenshots that it was NOT AI, and in fact was truly an electronic sketch and human made piece of art. This was reason enough for me to want to support the work, but I cannot state enough how much I enjoyed this read.
Featuring a morally grey MMC with a troubled past that you can’t help but cheer for, this one was a great ride. I went into this blind, and to preserve any surprises for others, I don’t want to discuss the plot too much. About halfway through I wondered if there was more to the mystery as I felt I had solved it on my own, and boy was I wrong. Buckle up, because after the 50-60% mark, the twists and turns really amp up! I would say there is not so much a tonal shift at this point as an expectation change, but it is a thoroughly enjoyable ride the whole time - even as the twisted and terrible truths come to light! I finished hungry to read more and count myself a new fan of the series! I can’t wait to see what horror future novels hold! Thank you to Dharshaini G, Ganapathy Legacy Press and NetGalley for the eARC!
The Devil‘s Brother by Darshanie G, when Verron Smith came back to Dee Mond’s Ford, it was to solve his brother Jay‘s murder but what ultimately happens will change everything Verron knew about his life in the first place. at 12 he and his little brother were adopted by MOD the doctor on the island and a lifesaver to the two boys. Veron is back to be the teacher for the 10 year students who on his first day give him a hard time and even tries to mock his brother‘s death something he immediately puts a stop to. What he can’t help to notice is that they all make animal sounds when their name is called he also clocks who the bullies are and who they bully something else he will try to put a stop to. He reunites with his childhood friend Bella the head teacher Alistair and one of the guys he bullied back in the day it really wasn’t bullying however whoever messed with Jay would mess with him. There’s also talk of the island demon he never believed in despite the fact he seen it more than once. There is so much to this book I cannot give it justice and even though while reading it you think you know what’s going to happen but I don’t believe any reader is prepared for the twist and turns in this book. He’s engaged to Seth who lives back on the mainland but he’s never invited him to the island where he grew up but before it’s over Seth will be there as a pawn in a game Verron never knew he was playing. surprisingly Seth will not be the only person he is shocked to see on the island if he can only make it off alive. I love the fact that even though the topic is full of dark subject matter Verron at times had a very playful attitude especially with those who try in Garner control over him. There are so many surprises in this book it was so creepy throughout 90% of it and I just loved it it is a great book. I was so excited to see they have two more issues in the devils archive the devil’s Ward, which looks like it’s set in a hospital IDK but I’m definitely downloading and reading that they also have the Devil‘s Charge, which is coming out soon and I cannot wait. The thing I was most excited about is the book Cora one of the twins from the Devil’s brother and I am reading that next. I don’t know how all these great authors get away from me but I am so glad I found this one a definite recommend. If you like books that are consistently spooky and very well done then you will definitely enjoy this one. #BookSirens, #TheBlindreviewer, #MyHonestReview, #DarshanieG, #TheDevil‘sBrother,
A solid second installment in The Devil’s Archive series! I was super excited about this novel after absolutely loving The Devil’s Ward, and Dharshaini G. did not disappoint.
I have to emphasize how believable and three-dimensional the series’ protagonists are. Veran, in particular, surprised me by being such a hot-headed brat (and I say this with the utmost affection, I love the guy). His relationship with other characters—namely, Seth and the students—was heartfelt, but once again, the sibling bond stood out as the emotional core of the story.
Now, spoilers ahead — I was also pleasantly surprised by the near absence of supernatural elements. I think it was a smart decision to keep them subtle and instead focus on the psychology of the village and its “traditions” (I won’t forget the boiling scene any time soon).
If I had to say what didn’t quite click for me, it would be the pacing. The story leaves almost no room to breathe; it’s frenetic, and while that certainly keeps the reader’s attention, I think some emotional beats would have landed more powerfully if given a bit more space to process them.
Overall, though, this was a great read! The Devil’s Brother has cemented the series as a must-read for me. I’m so glad another story is on the way, and I’m sure Diwa will be a delight to follow. Thanks to NetGalley and the author for the ARC!
I really liked a lot about this book. The main character, Veran, was so feral and I loved him. His relationship with his brother, Jay, pulled on my heartstrings. He's the best kind of big brother.
The setting of this story was fantastic. Set on a island, it had the eerie, creepy vibe you want out of a horror novel. The children were seriously creepy too. Making animal noises at role call. No thanks.
I had a real issue with the pacing. I found myself debating on DNFing, as there was a lot going on, but it also felt like nothing was actually happening. It's part of the mystery (which I don't like reading, so that's my fault). I felt this could have been a bit shorter. But I pressed on and I am so glad I did.
I would 100% recommend this to anyone looking for a good horror/mystery.
**Thank you Netgalley and Ganapathy Legacy Press for providing this ebook. All opinions are my own.**
Wow. This is a horror story unlike any other. Kept me on the edge of my seat and was nail biting. The story of Vernan returning to the island he grew up on as he tries to discover the truth of his brother's death and the Kakchra. The lines of folklore and truth blurred into a story of intrigue and discovery of the horrors that lie beneath . Definitely a good pre Halloween book.
* Thank you to NetGalley for my ARC. I have given my unbiased, honest review in exchange *
Thank you Netgalley and Dharshaini for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. Be aware this review might have some spoilers.
The author promised strong sibling bonds and it surely delievered.
I bumped into this book over a videopost from Dharshaini herself promoting it over her tiktok. I've always wanted to dive into the horror genre and when she said it was available on Netgalley for an ARC I jumped straight into it. (Fun fact: it's my very first ARC ever!).
She describes this book as the sibling-centric horror set in an island where kids keep dying. Veran has grew up in the island in company of his younger brother, Jay. Five years ago, Jay died and Veran fled. Now, five years later, he comes back and becomes a teacher and more importantly, class 10V's home teacher. It doesn't take him long to notice something is very wrong in his class and the island.
I came into this book kind of expecting I was scared to death, and certaintly I was in some parts but for the most of it, fear was in my head. I think that's the purpose, to infest you with a fear so great that gives you anxiety (which it did).
Overall, it was fast-paced and so addicting that I had to pace myself and even reread whole paragraphs because I kept skipping things. I confidently can say that Dharshaini keeps you at the edge of your seat waiting for everything to unravel.
In the style regard, I only have a quick note. I found the continuous use of long dashes repetitive for the first two chapters, then it was well spaced out. It was used as clarification remarks and also to cut sentences short to create tension and in the first chapter is used way too many times for my own liking. However, I didn't mind it at all for the rest of the book. It has nothing to do with gramatical errors or such, just my personal preferences that's all.
The characters were very well written in my opinion, Veran especially, since he's the main character. The side characters stood out and everyone had a distinct personality that I quite liked. The relationships progressed in consonance with what was happening and Veran's character growth surprised me. I didn't expect him to apologise to those he wronged before and to reflect enough he realised his behavior was bad.
Also, the author made a good job protraying how tradition can corrupt people and how people support believes without thinking critically. Religion relies on that, however, it doesn't excuse horrible behavior. She portrayed how difficult is to change your way of thinking and how you'd endure with tradition and the status quo just so people around you don't suffer, and how people in charge beneficiate from those threats.
In conclusion, my final rating is 4.75 stars and the only reason it wasn't a fully 5 stars was because it frustrated the hell out of me in some parts. (I really want to buy a final copy as it doesn't come out until November 10th.).
A hauntingly sinister story filled with twists and turns, pure evil, mysteries and secrets, folklore, and so much more!
This one hit the mark again! You won't want to put this book down until you have the answers to this horrifying mystery! You know a horror/thriller book is good when you're looking over your shoulder at the slightest sound while reading. I was beyond creeped out, had knots in my stomach, and tears welled up in my eyes as I read this one, so, of course, I'm going to 100% recommend reading it! I had a flood of so many deep, unsettling emotions, but in the best way possible. This book will envelop you.
I couldn't get over how sinister and unsettling the plot was in this one. I will be honest and say it took me a minute to really get into it because there was so much going on and so much I didn't understand at first, but as I continued to read and learn more and find out more horrific details the mystery had me in a chokehold. The MMC, Veran, is trying to find out what happened to his brother who died unexpectedly. Everyone says it was an accident, but Veran knows something isn't right with his brother's death or his home island, especially when he steps into his classroom on the first day of his new job and his students are making animal noises during attendance. Startled with unease and desperation, he will stop at nothing to unmask the truth.
The MMC and all the characters quite frankly were so well-rounded and had so much depth, I felt like I was there with them. The MMC's primal instinct to protect his brother even after his death was so captivating. As a big sister myself I, could truly feel his pain and desperation. I absolutely loved his character. On the other hand, my hatred for some of the characters was so real, but in a good way. The author did a brilliant job of crafting the villains of the story, while also heavily weaving in folklore and history to back it up. I am always astounded by this author's work.
I literally cannot find enough words to describe how much I loved this book and how monumental it is! I CANNOT wait to read the next one! And whatever you do, do not sleep on these books or the author!!
Tropes:
• Siblings (big brother/little brother) • Mystery-thriller • Asian MCs • Folklore • Twists and turns • Creepy village hiding secrets • On the edge of your seat read • Protective teacher ... and so much more!!
I’ve rated this book based on the CAWPILE method. This book averaged 5 stars.
CHARACTERS- 10/10
This author has a way with making characters seem real and raw. The reader really falls in love with these characters.I find that in general, that’s a big reason why a lot of my four star books aren’t five stars. I want to be able to empathize with the characters, and if they don’t seem real, I can’t do that.
ATMOSPHERE/SETTING- 10/10
This creepy island with the creepy forest and the creepy school with the creepy adults and the creepy kids making creepy animal noises is creepy. I love it.
WRITING STYLE- 10/10
Written beautifully. Not too wordy, but not too simple. Has an absolutely beautiful flow.
PLOT- 10/10
Great plot! I liked the whole thing. The overarching themes and the side mysteries that all converge into the main plot is chefs kiss. I’m happy with every twist and turn in this book. Even the heartbreaking ones.
INTRIGUE- 9.5/10
The beginning was a little slow for me, because at first I wasn’t sure I was going to like it. But I made myself forge on because ‘The Devil’s Ward’ was one of, if not, my top read this year. I figured the same author who wrote that surely didn’t write a flop right after? I was right. Definitely not a flop.
LOGIC/RELATIONSHIPS- 10/10
As I stated above, the characters feel real, and they draw you in. The relationships feel like your own. I can’t even tell you how hard I was sobbing in the last twenty percent or so. Absolutely wrecked.
ENJOYMENT- 10/10
I think it’s fairly obvious at this point, but I enjoyed this very much! I would recommend this to anyone that I thought would enjoy it. Plus, I have a new author to add to my ‘favorite author list’ in my book journal. And another book to add to my ‘Buy a physical copy’ list.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
If I had to use only one word to describe the Devil's Brother, I'd choose - cathartic.
It was an absolute rollercoaster of emotions, much like the Devil's Ward. From the action, through plot twists and to the emotions you can feel side by side with Veran, the book sucks you in and refuses to let go no matter how stressed you are.
There were moments when I felt like I would never get a break from all the tension and ache that I felt during every single line, but, thankfully, the ending provided a much needed relief and dried the tears on my face.
Veran was a wonderful character to read about. Likeable but painfully human as well and, through that, relatable. It was easy to connect with him and to sympathize with what he was going through. Not to mention that I always find myself deeply attached to older sibling characters and their struggles.
Dharshaini Ganapathy has the ability to create a world in which the human and the paranormal coexist and mix in a way that makes for a wonderfully eerie setting and makes you ask the question - which is more monstrous: the monster or the person.
What's more, the book leaves you with some still-unanswered mysteries that itch your brain a little and make you want for more.
I had the pleasure of reading the Devil's Brother before its premiere and the only downside of that which I see, is that I'll have to wait longer for another book than if I patiently waited until November.
I highly recommend it and hope it'll get all the love it deserves.
I typically read low-angst, feel-good, contemporary LGBTQ+ romance. But just like with movies, every now and then I crave a bit of a mystery/scary/psychological thriller and the blurb on this one got my full attention. But that's not where it stopped. Oh, no. I was hooked from the very beginning. And much like Jay was in the woods at the beginning of the book, I was frozen, reading in equal parts horror and curiosity.
This book checked all my boxes for a scary story. It was a thriller but it wasn't a blood bath, gore-fest. It was perfection. I was creeped out, I was amused, and I was on the edge of my seat wanting to see how it ended.
I don't want to go into details because they'd all be spoilery, but I will say this is a book I can see myself reading again. It's not one of those 'once you know the twists and ending, it ruins the effect' thus making it a one-time thing. This is one that I bet will read even different the second time around because you will notice things differently or pick up on things you didn't the first time around. I already can't wait for a re-read!
Thank you NetGallery for the advance copy and the opportunity to share my thoughts on the story.
Devoured this book. If I could give this more than 5 stars I would! When I read a book I like to read it and turn it into a movie in my mind and that’s EXACTLY. What I was able to do! I would absolutely love to see “The Devils Brother” become a movie!!! I read this book between being sick and work shifts so it took me 2 days! But in between stopping, I couldn’t help but to find myself wondering about what next was to come! Thank you so much for this amazing story! Excited to read more by Dharshaini!
I really enjoyed getting to read this, it had that mystery thriller element that I was hoping for from the description. I thought everything worked well as a suspenseful atmosphere and trying to figure out what was going on in this world. The characters were everything that I was hoping for and was invested in their storyline. Dharshaini G has a great writing style and was glad I got to read this. I hope Dharshaini G writes more in this genre as it was everything that I was looking for.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This book delivers intensity from page one. It’s dark, gritty, and packed with tension that keeps you on edge. The storyline digs into survival in a way that feels raw and immerse. It has a solid, compelling plot that pulls you straight into its world. #BookReview #TheDevilsBrother #DharshainiG #BookTok #Bookstagram #Dark #PageTurner #QuickReads
Incredible. I couldn't stop reading, I loved this so much. I have read The Devil's ward before, which was amazing, and I might love this even more. The suspense from the moment I started reading to the plottwists halfway through and at the end, it was just so good...!
This book didn’t just give me chills—it relocated my soul to a haunted island with a trauma-riddled biology teacher and a demonic middle school mystery. And I liked it there. Probably too much.
Quick Breakdown: • Genre: Dark supernatural mystery, horror-lite with literary vibes • Mood: Atmospheric, unsettling, emotionally complex, deeply creepy • Pacing: Slow-burn start, then spirals into compulsive-page-turner territory by the halfway point • Spice Level: 0 (but the tension? Deliciously deranged) • Triggers: Child death, bullying, suicide ideation, animal cruelty, implied grooming, class-based abuse, manipulation, gaslighting, mental health themes, eerie supernatural stalking
The Vibe:
If The Sixth Sense, The Wicker Man, and The Magnus Archives had a British academic baby who never learned how to process grief but sure as hell knew how to wield a trauma-fueled vendetta—that baby would be Veran Smith.
We’re talking intense sibling grief, supernatural entities that smile way too wide, and a class of kids acting like farm animals for reasons that are 100% NOT cute. Add in a messed-up small-town island setting where the adults are shady, the kids are possessed (maybe), and the forest breathes? I was hooked like a morally ambiguous fish on a line made of brotherly obsession and unresolved trauma.
💬 Favorite Quote (no spoilers):
“There’s no one to stop me anymore. So trust me, if any of you freaks mock my brother again… I’ll burn you alive.”
Ah yes. The educator of the year. Someone give this man tenure and therapy—preferably in reverse order.
What Works: • Veran’s voice. Sarcastic, wounded, violent, and unapologetic. He’s a disaster and I rooted for him like he was my own unhinged older brother. • The lore of the Kakchra demon? 10/10 nightmare fuel. • Dialogue that bites harder than your emotionally unavailable ex. • Tension that builds so subtly it makes your spine itch.
Why It Hits:
This story turns the creepy-child trope inside out and builds an entire mythology around the ways children reflect adult sins. It’s haunting and heart-wrenching and dark in a way that doesn’t flinch or pander. Jay’s innocence versus Veran’s feral protectiveness is the soul of this novel, and it broke me in the best way.
What Might Not Work for You: • It’s unsettling. No cozy vibes here. • There’s no romance. Just trauma, grief, and vengeance. • Kids doing weird animal noises might make you go, “Oh hell no,” and throw the book. That’s valid.
Final Thoughts:
This is dark academia meets horror folklore with the emotional devastation of losing your soul’s anchor and the slow unraveling of everything you thought was true. The ending? No spoilers, but I’m still clutching my Kindle like it owes me emotional reparations.
If you like books that mess with your head, steal your heart, and leave you questioning whether children are ever really innocent—The Devil’s Brother will own you.
And I, for one, welcome our creepy child overlords.
When Veran and his younger brother were adopted and brought to Daemonsford, they thought their troubles were over. No more bouncing between placements with abusive and uncaring fosters, just a quiet life with their new mother Maude. They had been right, until five years later when the younger of the two brothers' body was fished from the sea. Five years after that, Veran returns to his home island with both Science and Teaching degrees - And a revenge plot against those who perpetrated what he knows was a murder against his brother.
Veran is assigned the year 10 biology students at his former academy, and he soon finds out that these students have secrets of their own. Secrets that seem to be tied to his brother's death.
Could it be happening all over again? The Townspeople all seem to know something but have no interest in sharing this information with Veran, whom they now see as an outsider and an enemy of their close knit community. One thing they will tell him is that the town's very own demon was watching him, and wanted him gone.
This spooky tale laced with Asian folklore was a fun and exciting read that really picked up in the second half!
I did seem to have a similar gripe as most readers, which was that the pacing sometimes felt off. The story itself absolutely made up for that!
Mini Break down without giving any spoilers:
The Vibes: M. Night Shyamalan's The Village x Gregory Hoblit's Fallen (two of my most cherished films ever, so this is a huge endorsement from me)
The Characters: Veran was the most loveable avoidant Bi-Romantic Asexual I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. The townspeople were religious nut jobs. All very well written. I hate them all equally.
The kids really stole the show for me. They are the heart and soul of this story that ultimately asks the question : what are you willing to sacrifice in order to atone for the sins of your parents sins? And should you even have to? Note: Cora is Queen and that is all I will say about that.
The Plot: Killer storyline, killer twist ending. I would devour a sequel!
The Pacing: Can be a bit chaotic at times. This could perhaps add to the thrilling aspect of the book, just not what I am used to.
I will be recommending this book to anyone who will listen! Thank you to Dharshaini G and BookSirens for allowing me to read this book before its release! All Opinions are my own.
Do you ever finish reading a book and your heart hurts in the best way and you want everyone to drop everything and read that book right this very second? That's how I feel about The Devil's Brother. I am completely blown away by this thriller, and I need you to stop what you're doing and go read it immediately.
Veran returns to the remote island of his childhood, Daemonsford, to find the culprit behind his teen brother's suspicious death five years before.
To start, Veran is such a deep, rich character. He's not your typical protagonist, as in, he's not necessarily a 'good guy.' He has some major rage and violence issues, even before the death of his brother. Despite his flaws, or more likely because of them, he feels as real as if I were standing alongside him investigating Daemonsford and the weirdness behind his brother's death.
The atmosphere throughout The Devil's Brother stuffs your shoes with ivy and rot and creeps into your bones. I was in that forest, lost in the fog, walking the hallways of the school alongside Veran.
The mystery is incredibly unique. Nothing here is predictable, and Dharshaini G. kept me on my toes all the way to the end.
I will be recommending The Devil's Brother to everyone I know. Thank you to NetGalley and Dharshaini G. for the ARC copy. All thoughts are my own.
Oh, and by the way, if you sign up for the author's newsletter, you get a cool bonus novella about another character and the events leading up to this book. That is also very much worth doing after you finish reading. Ok, go read this now. Please. Thank you!
You follow Veran as he returns home wanting answer for his brothers death. Daemonsford is full of secrets and he intends to find out what. Great story development with the right amounts of horror and knowing. A must read for those who love supernatural.
