I just discovered this author and I will be reading more of her in the future. I enjoyed this novel. It has a soap opera type feel to it. There is scandal, drama, love, hate, and struggle.
Rather than give away crucial details, I will sum up some of its characters. Dora grows up in the poor part of town and wants so badly to go up in the world. She marries a man on a better street and has a child. Somewhere down the road tho, she grows tired of taking care of her husband, a stroke victim, and a man from her old street starts calling to her. When the call becomes to strong, she leaves her daughter, Grace behind to make it on her own.
Grace is now stuck with an invalid father, a business that is failing, and a town that looks down on her. Thanks to unknown benefactor, money comes in for her schooling and with the help of some friends, Tom, Joan, Aaron, and Don, she not only gets educated, but starts her own make up business. This part of the novel shows readers how very difficult it was for a woman in the 1930s to start a business.
There is a love triangle, a broken heart here and there, money gained and money lost, and world war two comes and goes, leaving behind repercussions for Grace to face. There is marriages gone bad, vindictive women, and men out for revenge. When Grace marries a man she doesn't love, she risks losing her business and her home and all she has worked for. Can she save it all? Will she find love again? Will she ever discover who her mysterious benefactor is?
A great story that took three blissful days to read. My only complaint is there is very little in way of clothing descriptions and such. I don't see myself reading it again, but I really did like it. The ending holds a big surprise.
